A Rockford Democrat in the Illinois House is pushing legislation to ban the use of Indigenous mascots in schools, citing their offensive nature and impact on Native American students' well-being. The bill targets names like Redskins, Braves, and Indians, prohibiting logos depicting Native Americans or using symbols like feathered headdresses. Schools have until September 1, 2028, to phase out such mascots. The Illinois Association of School Boards raises cost concerns, labeling it an unfunded mandate for over 50 schools. Despite these challenges, the bill has cleared the committee and is poised for a House vote this week. The Illinois Association of School Boards has voiced concern over the bill, as they argued it would be an expensive mandate for over 50 high schools across the state. State Representative Dan Swanson (R-Alpha) brought up fact the legislation is another unfunded mandate on these schools that is full of concerns and inconsistencies.

In this week's episode I sat down with Rachel Wherley, Erin Elswood, and Shelby Holloway, the co-directors of the Mascots Matter campaign. Mascots Matter is an independent grassroots advocacy initiative calling for the retirement of offensive disability mascots. We discuss the origins of the “m” slur and its continued, harmful use through to present day, the founding of Mascots Matter and its advocacy efforts thus far, why discriminatory disability mascots are not just a local issue and much more. For reference, this conversation was recorded on March 18, 2025. Also, the “m”-slur will be used in context when explaining it as a slur as well as referring to these mascots. It is important to note that neither myself nor my guests condone the use of this word nor is it a part of our vocabularies. Today is the Super Bowl, and while millions gather to watch, we're here to ask: What are we really watching? In this episode of All My Relations, Temryss Lane (Lummi Nation) and Matika Wilbur (Swinomish & Tulalip) dive into the deep, complex relationship between Native communities and sport.American football is more than just a game—it's a battlefield. From its origins at the Carlisle Indian School to its modern-day spectacle of billion-dollar profits, colonial metaphors, and racialized labor, the sport reflects a larger American story. “Football is about violence. It's about territory. It's about power,” Temryss reminds us.We discuss how sports have been both a tool of oppression and liberation for Native athletes, the NFL's plantation-like structure, the devastating impact of CTE on Black and Indigenous players, and the erasure of Native identity through mascotry (looking at you, Chiefs fans).“I can't unsee it. Football is a game where predominantly Black players put their brains on the line for white owners to get richer,” says Matika. “And yet, I grew up watching it with my grandma, pretending to care at Super Bowl parties, and even playing fantasy leagues for years.”We hold the contradictions of loving sport, recognizing its harm, and pushing for better. “Sports teach us belonging,” Temryss says. “It's why Native people are damn good at them.”Watch the Super Bowl if you must, but listen to this first. And for the record—Go Eagles.
