Courtroom battles are reshaping the film industry in ways that affect everyone from A-list stars to streaming subscribers. When Scarlett Johansson sued Disney over Black Widow's simultaneous streaming release, she wasn't just fighting for her paycheck—she was challenging how talent gets compensated in the digital age. The resulting alleged $40 million settlement forced studios everywhere to rewrite contracts with streaming contingencies.Meanwhile, across the globe, Nigerian filmmaker Femi Adebayo made history with a judgment against digital pirates who cleverly misused his film's promotional materials. His three-year legal fight established crucial precedent for Nollywood creators and signaled that copyright protection extends beyond Hollywood's borders.Technology continues to create fascinating legal disruptions. When Quentin Tarantino announced plans to auction Pulp Fiction NFTs, Miramax quickly filed suit, arguing his 1993 contract never contemplated blockchain tokens. Though they settled privately, the dispute highlighted how decades-old agreements struggle to address technologies that didn't exist when the ink dried. The most provocative developments involve artificial intelligence. Buenos Aires prosecutors are challenging their own government for failing to regulate AI systems that clone faces and voices without consent, framing digital identity as a constitutional right. Simultaneously, Chinese courts ruled that images created with AI tools can receive copyright protection—but only when significant human creativity guides the process. From Japanese courts imposing record penalties against "fast movie" channels that condense films into unauthorized summaries to European judges limiting what information YouTube must share about copyright infringers, these cases collectively demonstrate that intellectual property law isn't just legal background noise—it's the script determining who controls the stories we love.Whether you're creating content, distributing it, or simply enjoying it as a fan, understanding these shifting legal frameworks provides a fascinating new lens through which to view your favorite films. Welcome to Following Films, the show where we go behind the scenes with the people who make the movies we love. I'm your host, Chris Maynard, and today I'm joined by a filmmaker whose new film is both a gritty Boston drama and a deeply personal debut.Eric Aronson is a Boston-based writer and director with over 22 years of experience as a Hollywood screenwriter. He's written for major studios like Warner Bros., Disney, Miramax, and Lionsgate, and collaborated with creative forces like Sacha Baron Cohen. Now, with his directorial debut Any Day Now, Aronson brings a raw, heartfelt story to the screen — and back home to Boston. The film stars Boston native Paul Guilfoyle, best known for CSI, L.A. Confidential, and Spotlight. He plays Marty Lyons, a streetwise hustler who pulls a drifting young night watchman — played by Taylor Gray — into a murky world of misfits, regret, and second chances.Featuring an outstanding cast including Alexandra Templer, Thomas Kee, and Armando Rivera, Any Day Now is a love letter to the city and a story about finding meaning when everything feels lost.

In the second of five special episodes to celebrate this podcast's 300th episode, focused on J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy epic The Lord of the Rings, Ralph Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings was 18-years-old by the time Peter Jackson started considering making his own version in live action. Jackson and his partner Fran Walsh wanted to make something high fantasy, but kept coming back to Tolkien's stories.Acquiring the rights from Saul Zaentz took a while, and at the time Jackson was contracted to Miramax, so Harvey Weinstein took charge. With a planned two-film adaptation, filmed back-to-back, this The Lord of the Rings adaptation was worked on under Miramax. Then the budget started to balloon, but parent company Disney refused to help.Jackson was given an ultimatum by Weinstein - either reduce the number of films to one, continue with two on a heavily reduced budget, or abandon the project entirely and find another studio willing to take it on within four weeks.Jackson and his "fellowship" would choose their own quest to find a new studio, and they ended up at New Line Cinema, where something incredible happened... This episode is Part 1 of a three-part story, as well as Part 2 of a five-part group of episodes. In speaking with my two guests, they shared stories of the three generations of writers in the family including, Irene's mother, Wilma, followed by my guest, Irene and her son Brendan. Brendan is an award winning graphic novel/picture book author and acquiring editor at Blackstone Publishing where he also runs the TV and Film Division even made notice of having his maternal grandmothers published books on his desk. Brendan shares that he was always supported and encouraged by his family with his passion for comic books which he started writing and drawing caricatures at a young age.In time, Irene expressed "that the family was moving in a different direction and the divorce was almost inevitable." Irene continues, "I'm highly emotionally intelligent and I finally found my tribe. I found people who spoke my language." This all occurred once she went back to school for her Masters Degree in Counseling, and later on became a social worker. Brendan raves about his childhood as a latch key kid. He loved growing up in Connecticut. And now as a father, he appreciates even more what it takes for parents to raise their children. And now he's learned even more about what his mother was going through raising the four Deneen children. Both Irene and Brendan claim to be emotionally intelligent-they are very good at listening to others, which Brendan feels that "not many people listen to one another these days." Brendan has always been there for his mom as a sounding board. Irene says " Brendan was my listening post." When she needed to talk, she call Brendan. They have a special bond for sure. They respect one another.Irene Deneen Murray: Irene Deneen Murray grew up in the 50's, an era when a woman could be a nurse, teacher or secretary. She chose teacher because it pleased her mother. In truth the first half of her life was devoted to taking care of or pleasing her mother. At age 50 having raised 4 kids in a Hollywood -worthy suburb, Irene became a divorcee and learned to love being more adventurous than she had previously ever imagined. By then she was working as a social worker having recently earned a Master's Degree in Counseling. Irene loves the natural world and has been a devoted hiker and later a biker, paddler and pretty consistently a practitioner of yoga. She continues these pastimes presently sometimes to the chagrin of her children since they may picture her falling off a cliff, rolling over in her kayak or some other catastrophe. Her children and grandchildren are her greatest achievement. She is a good observer and has insight galore but is sometimes amazed at how each of her children has developed so uniquely. Brendan Deneen is the author of the novelsThe Ninth Circle andThe Chrysalis, as well as the bestselling four-volume Night Night, Groot picture book series for Marvel/Disney. He's also the author of the middle-grade graphic novelGreen Arrow: Stranded for DC Comics; the novels Morbius: Blood Ties and Guardians of the Galaxy: Annihilation:Conquest from Marvel/Titan, and Alien: Uncivil War from 20th Century Studios/Titan. His other graphic novel work includes multiple volumes of Flash Gordon, an original Island of Misfit Toys book, and the original graphic novel Scatterbrain. In addition to his writing, Brendan has been working in the publishing and film/TV industries for twenty-five years, including development jobs with Scott Rudin Productions and Miramax, as well as editorial and book-to-film jobs with St. Martin's Press and Tor Books. He currently works at Blackstone Publishing, where he's an acquiring editor in addition to running the company's film/TV division, which he created, and where he has dozens of literary projects set up at movie studios, streamers, and networks. His short stories and essays have been published by St. Martin's Press, Reader's Digest Books, 13Thirty Press, and Necro Publications.  Brendan Deneen's Written Works:NOVELS                                                                    The Ninth CircleThe ChrysalisMorbius: Blood TiesGuardians of the Galaxy: Annihilation--ConquestAlien: Uncivil WarTracer GRAPHIC NOVELSScatterbrainFlash Gordon: The Mercy WarsFlash Gordon: Invasion of the Red Sword Flash Gordon: The Vengeance of MingThe Island of Misfit Toys Green Arrow: Stranded PICTURE BOOKSNight Night, Groot First Day of Groot!Snow Day for Groot!Summer Adventure for Groot! He's also known as the man who inexplicably killed his wife and himself. For Tina, Brad, Stef and Jason, he's remembered simply as “Dad”—even though he left them orphans with a tarnished legacy when he murdered their mom before killing himself. Beneath the Shadow follows the children from their idyllic early lives to the night of the crime. In addition, you see decades into the future as they refused to succumb to despair and anger. That is because of the grandparents (parents to Martha). They raised them to forgive and move forward—with or without answers. Grandpa and Grandma Cline moved into the room where the murder/suicide took place. They raised the children and refused to disparage their son-in-law, Jim. The children excelled. Still, any understanding of the tragedy would elude them for decades. Make sure you follow Kevin on Instagram over at @kevpatrickallen. Go to the kppllc.net to learn more about Beneath the Shadow.

El caso de Emilia Pérez - The Dailies 117

Churros y Palomitas

Esta entrega fue traída gracias a:Productora Ejecutiva: Blanca LópezProductor Asociado: Juan Carlos Toledo Pérez NúñezCo-Productor: Dany SaadiaCo-Productor: Logan MayerCo-Productor: Román RangelAgradecimiento especial a nuestros Patreons: Adriana Fernández, Agustín Galván, Odeen Rocha, Jaime Rosales, Juan Espíritu, Luiso Uribe, Zert, Luis Gallardo, Álvaro Vázquez, Arturo Manrique, Lau Berdejo, Marce, Alejandro Alemán, Arturo Aguilar, Enrique Vázquez, Ernesto Diezmartínez, Jorge I. Creativity through the lens of a screen writer, Emmy nominated producer and podcaster"Creativity is just creating something that wasn't there."Adam “Tex” Davis graduated from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts in 1993. A scant three years later he'd achieved great success -- as the night manager of Shaun's Bagels in Manhattan. But soon after, "Tex" sold his first screenplay, Sunburned, to Miramax and his second screenplay Just Friends to New Line Cinema. Just Friends went on to become a cult, rom-com classic starring Ryan Reynolds and Anna Farris. Other produced credits soon followed including Spring Break Lawyer, a made-for-cable comedy for MTV; and Gardener of Eden, a dark indie-comedy produced by Leonardo Dicaprio's Appian Way and directed by Entourage's Kevin Connolly. For nearly 20 years, Adam has written, rewritten, or punched-up over 25 feature film scripts for every major studio in Hollywood... and Bachelor Party 2. In addition, Adam has sold original comedy television series to the WB Network, CBS, and Comedy Central.Adam served as Co-Executive Producer and Head Writer for the Emmy nominated, genre-defining, global hit series Brain Games, for the National Geographic Channel. The success of Brain Games led Adam to co-form Atomic Entertainment, a full-service film & TV production company, for which Adam oversees creative content. Along with long-time friend, fellow NYU graduate, and collaborator Jerry Kolber, Atomic created the darkly-comic docu-series, The Internet Ruined My Life (SyFy) and Brainchild, a high-concept, kids' science/variety show, co-produced by Pharrell Williams for Netflix. Adam has also produced/ directed branded projects for Google, GE, IBM, Drone Racing League, Top Golf, Headspace & Conde Nast. With dozens of original projects airing or in the works, including What's Your Problem? and Making Magic -- Atomic continues its quest for global dominance. In his spare time, Adam continues to write original screenplays and create series ideas. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife, daughter, dog, cat, and fish.https://www.linkedin.com/company/atomic-entertainment-group/https://www.instagram.com/atomicent/https://www.atomicentertainment.com/Send us a text

As 2024 comes to a close, we couldn't end the year without one final episode drop. This one is especially fitting for New Year's Eve, as today's guest is none other than Alexandra Loewy, EP of Coralie Fargeat's critically acclaimed film, “The Substance.” No spoilers, but NYE plays a special role in the third act! Ali began as an assistant at Miramax and eventually worked her way up to President of US film operations at Working Title before pursuing her current endeavor of independent producing. "The Substance" was one of my favorite films this year. I couldn't imagine a better way to close out the year than with a fellow badass who also happen to have a son named Theo. Join us as we discuss the evolving definition of a producer's role in Hollywood, the power of women in their 40s, and how the making of this film changed Ali's life. Wishing you all a wonderful start to 2025! Xx CG SUBSCRIBE FOR MORE https://aop.beehiiv.com/

Guest: Tony Vinciquerra, outgoing CEO of Sony PicturesTony Vinciquerra never planned to get into the entertainment business, let alone to become one of the most powerful people in Hollywood. After seven years, he's about to leave the CEO role at Sony Pictures (although he will stay on as chairman for one more year) and attributes much of his success to luck: “I've been in the right place at the right time a lot of times.” That said, he also encourages his children to proactively be curious, something that has served Tony well across his whole career. “I don't have as deep an education as many of the people that [I] compete with,” he says. “So I try to make up for that by knowing what's going on and being more curious ... working harder at it and being more — I don't know what the right word is, but sucking more information in, all the time.”Chapters:(00:54) - The perks of being a studio boss (03:38) - Hulu and Peter Chernin (06:41) - Fox Television (10:03) - Building relationships (13:37) - Not retiring (15:34) - Fixing Sony (23:29) - Intellectual property (26:58) - Juggling and baseball (29:30) - Setbacks and cable networks (34:58) - The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes (37:22) - AI and replacing writers (39:46) - Adapting to new tech (44:38) - Changing consumer behavior (49:25) - Sports media and live TV (55:31) - Bad days (58:57) - Tony's family (01:02:47) - Looking back (01:05:04) - Proactive curiosity (01:07:33) - What “grit” means to Tony Mentioned in this episode: Jason Kilar and Warner Bros., Jeff Zucker, John Waldron and Goldman Sachs, FX, Drayton McLane, Netflix, Variety, PlayStation, Spider-Man, Tom Rothman, CBS and Paramount, Comcast and NBC, Disney, Mike Hopkins, Amazon Prime, Funimation, Crunchyroll, Breaking Bad, The Last of Us, HBO, Uncharted, WBZ-TV, the Game Show Network, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy!, Joker: Folie à Deux, Miramax, Here, Tom Hanks, Venom: The Last Dance, Michael Ovitz, Sam Altman and OpenAI, Pixomondo, Neal Mohan and YouTube, Susan Wojcicki, DirecTV and AT&T, NFL Sunday Ticket, Qualcomm, the New York Knicks, the Golden State Warriors, Larry Baer and the San Francisco Giants, Major League Baseball, Walmart and Vizio, Madame Web, Capital Cities, Mark McLaughlin, and Mark Fields and Ford.Links:Connect with JoubinTwitterLinkedInEmail: grit@kleinerperkins.com Learn more about Kleiner PerkinsThis episode was edited by Eric Johnson from LightningPod.fm

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes. Last week, mere minutes after our Tuesday evening recording session, we were both delighted and disheartened when Marvel Studios dropped its “Look Ahead | Disney Plus'' trailer, which not only provided release dates, but showcased our first official look at footage, for a whopping 8 streaming projects. Here's what we learned: Box office juggernaut Deadpool & Wolverine will be available to stream on the platform beginning November 12, 2024. We already knew Daredevil: Born Again is set to begin streaming March 4, 2025, but the trailer, which was intercut with footage from the other shows, gave us our first look at the villain Muse, the return of Jon Bernthal's Punisher, as well as Bullseye, and perhaps most surprisingly the inclusion of Ms. Marvel's dad, Yusuf Khan What If Season 3 will begin streaming this December 22nd, with no word as to whether that will be a weekly or daily release, like last year. Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will begin airing January 29th, 2025 Riri William's Ironheart makes her return beginning June 24th, 2025 Eyes of Wakanda, the animated anthology series is set for an August 6th, 2025 debut Marvel Zombies will premiere sometime in October 2025, with the live action Wonder Man series starring Yahya Abdul Mateen II arriving later that December. In a final marketing push ahead of its December 3 premiere, Lucasfilm released final art, a poster, and a new trailer for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. The series, which is helmed by Spider-Man filmmaker Jon Watts, is an Amblin Entertainment-inspired coming of age tale that follows four youths who embark on a swashbuckling adventure with unexpected revelations. The trailer is in keeping with what we've seen from the series thus far, which is to say it feels tonally divergent from anything we've seen in Star Wars before, including new species, planets, and a synth-pop heavy score. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros is gearing up to bring the world of George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones to the silver screen with at least one film in early development. And that's pretty much all we know – there's no creative talent attached yet, meaning no writer or director, much less any word regarding a potential time, setting, or characters that might be involved. Amazon MGM Studios is testing actors for the role of Lara Croft in Phoebe Waller-Bridge's upcoming Tomb Raider series. Sophie Turner and Lucy Boynton top Amazon's wish list, according to Deadline. Scary Movie creators Marlon, Shawn, and Keenen Ivory Wayans are reuniting after 18 years to develop a new film in the franchise for Paramount and Miramax. Kelly Macdonald, known for Boardwalk Empire and No Country for Old Men, has joined the cast of DC Studios' Lanterns. Amazon MGM Studios is developing a Jack Ryan film, continuing the series storyline with John Krasinski, Wendell Pierce, and Michael Kelly. Andrew Bernstein will direct. Early box office projections show Wicked opening at over $80 million domestically and Gladiator 2 at $65 million, both debuting on November 22. Universal Pictures and LEGO have partnered to develop three live-action LEGO films, directed by Jake Kasdan, Patty Jenkins, and Joe Cornish. Toho has officially greenlit a new Godzilla movie from the director of last year's Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One. Amazon MGM Studios has acquired American Speed, starring Tom Holland and Austin Butler as the scandal-ridden Whittington Brothers, with Oscar-winning producer Charles Roven attached. Ridley Scott revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that he's working on a new Alien movie for 20th Century Studios, though it's unclear if it's connected to the Alien: Romulus follow-up or a standalone project. Tom Cruise is in early talks with Paramount for a Days of Thunder sequel, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In the wake of Disney’s big night at the Emmys, Kim Masters and Matt Belloni take a look at the New York Times article chronicling the chaotic succession endeavors at Disney. Plus, Masters speaks with writer-director J.T. Mollner and producer Roy Lee about their cat-and-mouse thriller Strange Darling. The film currently sits at 95% on Rotten Tomatoes and was called a “clever masterpiece” by Stephen King. But the road to such acclaim was not an easy one for the filmmakers. Mollner and his producers faced constant pushback from studio executives at Miramax, including having production shut down two days into shooting. Plus, the pair tells us about editorial clashes in post-production that would ultimately result in Mollner being given final cut.

There are an infinite number of stories to tell, an infinite number or worlds to explore. But sometimes one just burrows into your brain and won't let go, squirming into every daydream and idle conversation, demanding to be brought to life. And writer-producer Pete Jones believes those are the ones worth pursuing. An up and coming filmmaker who got his big break thanks to the Miramax sponsored competition "Project Greenlight," Peter Jones went from production assistant and insurance salesman to director and screenwriter almost overnight when he was awarded $1 million with which to produce his debut feature "Stolen Summer' (2002). We review The Disruptors: How 15 Successful Businesses Defied the Norm by Sally Percy. Sally Percy is a business journalist and editor, specialising in leadership and management. The Disruptors: How 15 Successful Businesses Defied the Norm, reviewed This is a good book in some ways, as it is always interesting when you get to learn about some companies that you perhaps have heard less about. At the same time, while reading the 15 case studies, we did wonder if there is some degree of confirmation bias going on. Is the common element that these companies are, or at have had success, rather than that they did anything particularly well. As Bill Gates said, to paraphrase, success is a lousy teacher. It makes you assume that the choices you made were awesome and, looking back, you did everything right. Some of the examples may age less well too. Elon Musk is included, which is, or rather would have been no surprise perhaps five years ago, whereas now it is hard to understand how relentlessly he is destroying his own reputation and actively turning people off buying his Tesla products among others. With the A24 example, it seemed like a narrative of a company growing, but how different is this arc of growth to that of Miramax? And we know that didn't turn out so well. We would have liked longer side bars, with a clearer exposition and explanation of why and what these particular people did that was disruptive or innovative, rather than simply growing and trying new sectors in which to make media content. It is an interesting and thought provoking read, but it is always a challenge to ensure that the profiles are not mere hagiography to the people featured. Was Elon really fearless, innovation, driven and daring, or merely a trustafarian tech bro, who is revealing his true, more insidious nature as time goes by. It would have been nice to have had a more critical analysis of how company X performed better than company Y for our tastes. Sally Percy is the author of new book The Disruptors: How 15 Successful Businesses Defied the Norm, published by Kogan Page on 03 September. Sally Percy is a business journalist and editor, specialising in leadership and management. She is also a leadership contributor to Forbes.com and a commercial copywriter, speechwriter and ghostwriter. She is author of The Disruptors: How 15 Successful Businesses Defied the Norm (Kogan Page), 21st Century Business Icons: The Leaders Who Are Changing our World (Kogan Page) and Reach the Top in Finance: The Ambitious Accountant's Guide to Career Success (Bloomsbury). The Disruptors Fearless, innovative, driven and daring. These are the qualities of a disruptor: a business that is willing to take risks to achieve incredible success. In The Disruptors, leading business journalist Sally Percy investigates the stories behind some of the world's most innovative businesses, who took unconventional and trailblazing approaches to overcome the competition and achieve success. Spotify, Nintendo, TikTok and A24. These are all businesses that have taken disruptive pathways to success and have redefined their industries. The Disruptors dives into the strategies behind these stories, offering valuable insights into innovative and daring entrepreneurship. See more book reviews here. "The Crow" remake starring Bill Skaarsgaard is on the horizon, so Gabe and Connor look at the last theatrical movie in the franchise: "The Crow: City of Angels." Forced to become an anthology series after the tragic loss of Brandon Lee, The Crow franchise flopped so hard with this second effort that the series went straight-to-video afterwards. That's largely thanks to meddling from everyone's favorite guy, Harvey Weinstein, who butchered the original vision by director Tim Pope and screenwriter David S. Goyer.Still, after the mediocore-to-spectacularly awful sequels that came afterwards, some fans appreciate this flick's style and consider it a worthy successor to the beloved original. So Gabe and Connor ask if COA was DOA, or if there's something to be salvaged in this strange concoction of BDSM, Nu Metal, and smog. Back in the early days of the comic book movies, it was rare to see one released to theaters which was not only financially successful but also generally beloved by fans.  There were the Batman films....and then everything else including The Rocketeer, The Shadow, and Dick Tracy.  But just under thirty years, one came out which not only proved to be both financially successful and hugely influential for so many other subgenre films which were to follow up but also was being released under unusually tragic circumstances.  This was the final on-screen appearance of Brandon Lee who unfortunately died during production as the result of an on-set accident involving the use of a prop gun.  It was a shocking turn of events for some one who seemed to have enormous promise as a potential movie star and who also happened to be the son of a legendary movie star (Bruce Lee) who also died under mysterious circumstances almost three decades prior. :( Under the sure hand of director Alex Proyas, this supernatural revenge thriller turned out better than any one could have expected.  It tells the story of Eric Draven, the front man for a local goth rock band in Detroit who is brutally murdered alongside his fiance....but then is brought back temporarily to bring justice to those who wronged him and his lost love.  Also co-starring Ernie Hudson, Michael Wincott, and Bai Ling, it's time to revisit one of the more beloved comic book adaptations of the '90's...or any decade for that matter. Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
