Sam Clements talks to filmmaker Henry Selick and actor Terri Hatcher about their classic animation, Coraline, which is now being re-released 15 years after it first opened. This August, celebrate the 15th anniversary of the acclaimed stop-motion epic that has enchanted fans across the globe since its release back in 2009. Combining the visionary imaginations of celebrated author Neil Gaiman (Sandman) and groundbreaking film studio LAIKA (Kubo and the Two Strings, ParaNorman, the upcoming Wildwood), Coraline is a wondrous and thrilling, fun and suspenseful adventure for young and old alike.A young girl walks through a secret door in her new home and discovers an alternate version of her life. On the surface, this parallel reality is eerily similar to her real life–only much better. But when this wondrously off–kilter, fantastical adventure turns dangerous and her counterfeit parents try to keep her forever, Coraline must count on her resourcefulness, determination, and bravery to save her family and get back home. We discuss Kubo and the Two Strings (2016), an animated action/adventure film about a young boy with magical powers searching for the Deathly Hallows in order to defeat Ralph Feinnes. Yes, really. We talk about the conspicuous lack of actual Asians in the cast, the breathtaking stop motion animation, and a bunch of mental health issues. Spoil My Movie has a phone number! Our final entry in our Stop motion shows, where we bring it back to the movie that began this exploration into the medium, Kubo and the Two Strings. I not only love it, but it may be one of my favorite movies, same with Toby and Maureen. This week, Nigel and Tazziii get folded up and fly as they enter the world of stop-motion for a deep dive into Kubo and the Two Strings (starting at 20:15), with Content Creator Manny Moon. We get caught up in the animated marvel that brings a lot of texture to a Hero's Journey that sees some serious and complex themes brought to a children's feature. As well as the great representation on display, we examine the narrative and subvert the expectations of a cinematic climax to really lean into compassion in its characters and themes. This week's storytelling tip is all about non-violent ends to your story. Other stories we're enjoying include: Final Fantasy Remake and Rebirth, My Hero Academia, Avatar the Last Airbender live action, X-Men 97, Summertime Rendering, Jujutsu Kaisen.
This week we discuss the movie Kubo and the Two Strings
The long-anticipated live-action reboot of "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" is finally making strides toward the big screen with a set release date of June 5, 2026. Directed by Travis Knight, known for his work on "Bumblebee" and "Kubo and the Two Strings," the film is expected to offer a fresh take on the iconic hero's origins. Knight will be teaming up once again with Chris Butler, who has been brought on to rewrite the script, promising a potentially vibrant and imaginative retelling of Prince Adam's transformation into He-Man. This project has shifted through various studios over the years, including Warner, Sony, and a brief stint at Netflix before landing at Amazon MGM Studios. The development journey reflects a mix of excitement and skepticism, given the numerous failed attempts to revive the franchise in live-action form since the 1987 film starring Dolph Lundgren.

This episode as one of the most anticipated films of the year fro Boaz is coming out, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is hitting the big screens world wide. We are talking animated films. And no can't talk about such a wide ranging medium of story telling in films alone, Oh no, we are rejoined by our first ever guests across the pond way back when, from the World of Horror Podcast. Warning we will be talking SPOILERSMartin and Boaz's choice is up first and we have not gone for Pixar film for once and gone for in our opinion the best film from studio Laika, Kubo and the Two Strings. On this one we talk about how simply beautiful the animation is, and speculate how fingers where lost in creating the stop motion. We talk about some of the very dark elements of the story. Plus we talk about how the film makes the audience part of the film. IMDB page World of Horror Podcast linkFVF Social linkstwitterinstagramTikTokAs ever please enjoy.Support the show
“I have a question. If I'm Beetle and you're Monkey, why isn't he called Boy?" We are bringing an end to our "Stop Motion Animation" round, so we had to talk about a film from one of the most prominent animation houses in the business, Laika Studios. We are checking out 2016's "Kubo and the Two Strings", the directorial debut from Travis Knight, CEO of Laika. Joined by our very own Honey Boy, Jon from the "Life's But A Song" podcast, we talk about the extremely white voice cast, why this was Laika's lowest performing movie, and what movie we'd pair this with for an Adam Driver Drive-In Double Feature! We also come up with our "Twins in Movies" Rushmore Mountain. Enjoy! HI-YAH! Coming at you with an animated face off on top of dragons while strumming shamizens. In this episode we faced the Laika animated film "Kubo & the Two Strings" off against the Disney animated movie "Raya & the Last Dragon". It's stop-motion versus computer animation in a battle between two movies inspired by various Asian cultural histories with themes of mortality and familial legacy led by young people and their special creature companions. How do you feel about stop-motion animation? We don't know either. In this Nerd Social Hour, we get into a love/hate relationship with stop-motion (but mostly we love it). Have you ever heard of a 30 year project called Mad God? What about a happy little movie called Kubo and the Two Strings? Join us as we nerd out on the animation style that makes us uncomfortable and confused, but also happy? Idk let's get into it.

Once I saw the trailer for Kubo and the Two Strings back in 2016, I was hooked as I loved the look and the fact they were going for a Asian- themed, fantasy-action piece. Shout Factory re-released the film on Blu-ray back in 2021 with slightly better visuals and new special features, but has now released it again in 4K with Kubo and the Two Strings (Limited SteelBook Edition) that features added HDR/Dolby Vision, as well as Dolby Atmos audio to place viewers into this fantasy epic.

It's the second week of 2023, and Dave and Jess spend it catching up on Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio on Netflix! This stop-motion animated film is listed as a kid's movie, but how does it fare as a date night watch? Listen to the couple discuss whether or not this adaptation from a "Master of Horror" holds up against the famous Disney animated version. Surely it's better than Roberto Benigni's disastrous adaptation, right? The couple discusses other favorite stop-motion animated films, with a shoutout to Kubo and the Two Strings. Other highlights include Jess inviting herself to a lime party (which, thankfully, is not the same as a lemon party), the use of dying maggots as a visual comparison, and a shoutout to the Kickstarter for David's comic book - Night of the Chihuahuas. The Smoky Harvest Apple Cider Margarita recipe came from Half Baked Harvest - https://www.halfbakedharvest.com/smoky-harvest-apple-cider-margaritas/.The Kickstarter for Night of the Chihuahuas is available here - http://kck.st/3Gz7jKE.Thanks for listening!
