Amy's back from Cannes, and this week, she and Paul are hitting the road with the 1995 comedy Tommy Boy. They dig into the behind-the-scenes tension between David Spade and Chris Farley, that it's one of Quentin Tarantino's favorite '90s comedies, and how Farley's tragic early death meant his full talent never truly got the spotlight it deserved. Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes. In a fairly shocking move, Marvel Studios will not have one of its classic Hall H presentations at San Diego Comic Con this year. Due to Avengers: Doomsday filming, the studio is opting not to pause production to fly actors to California. Marvel will still have panels and events throughout SDCC, just not the spectacle of Hall H, which has become a mainstay for the MCU particularly. This news is coupled with a recent appearance from the cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps at the CCPX promotional fan event in Mexico City last weekend, as well as buzz surrounding a supposed test screening for the fast approaching filmAt the TUDUM fan event this weekend, Netflix finally revealed the final season of Stranger Things will air in three parts late this year. The first will premiere November 26, followed by part two on Christmas and the series finale on New Year's Eve .Netflix also unveiled trailers for two of its anticipated upcoming films, Frankenstein - directed by Guillermo del Toro - and Knives Out 3: Wake Up Dead Man - directed by Rian Johnson. The films premiere in November and December, respectively, and both feature star-studded casts - something we've come to expect from Johnson's Knives Out films and what makes sense for a filmmaker as storied as del Toro. Frankenstein features Oscar Isaac in the titular role, as well as Jacob Elordi as the Monster, plus Mia Goth, and Christoph Waltz. Knives Out 3 is helmed once again by Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc, and has a list of A-lister stars including Jeremy Renner and Kerry Washington. The second full summer box office weekend was favorable, with Disney's live action Lilo & Stitch up 51 percent from the prior week, and Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning climbing up 55 percent. Sony's Karate Kid Legends opened to a $20 million domestic weekend as well. Seems like it's all sequels all the time right now for the summer box office. If insider Jeff Schneider's latest scoop is to be believed, Laura Linney has joined the cast of HBO's Lanterns series in an undisclosed role.HBO Max has renewed Emmy award winning series Hacks for a fifth season, which will make the series the longest-running live-action show in HBO Max's history. The highly-anticipated Elden Ring movie at A24 helmed by Alex Garland may be zeroing on a familiar face to lead the epic adaptation. Sources tell Deadline the director is in talks with Kit Connor, who recently appeared in his war pic Warfare, to star in the adaptation.Chris Hemsworth set Marvel twitter ablaze last week after posting a heartfelt message to MCU fans, which many took as a suggestion that Thor would not make it through Avengers: Doomsday. The post read: "Playing Thor has been one of the greatest honors of my life. For the last 15 years I've held Mjolnir and then Stormbreaker as the God of Thunder, but what made it truly special… was sharing it with all of you. Your passion, your cheers, and your love for this character have meant everything to me. Thank you for making my journey through the Marvel Cinematic Universe unforgettable. Next up, Doomsday!"Electronic Arts is canceling its planned Black Panther game and shutting down developer Cliffhanger Games according to IGN.Scott Caan and Elizabeth Debicki have been cast in David Fincher's sequel to Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and will be joining Brad Pitt in the feature that is being made by Netflix.Oscar nominee and Grammy winner Ariana Grande has joined the cast of the next installment in the Meet the Parents franchise, which will hit theaters on November 25, 2026.
It's Die Hard in Las Vegas! This week on DIE HARD ON A BLANK, we strap on our snakeskin boots and bullet belts for a dive into 3000 MILES TO GRACELAND - the loud, chaotic, Elvis-themed heist movie that somehow manages to sneak in a surprising amount of DIE HARD DNA!Two career criminals, Michael Zane (Kurt Russell), and Thomas Murphy (Kevin Costner) team up to pull a casino robbery in Las Vegas during an Elvis convention. However, the botched heist results in a high body count and in the aftermath, the psychotic, self-serving Murphy betrays Michael and the rest of the crew, sparking an expansive feud between the two men, who each try to reclaim their ill-gotten gains from the other, leaving an escalating trail of carnage in their wake.We explore how this underrated oddity isn't merely a post-Tarantino shoot-'em-up, but a film obsessed with American archetypes - outlaws, lawmen, lone wolves, and false idols. We also dig into the maximalist performances from Kurt Russell and Kevin Costner, the mythic cowboy framing, and how the film situates itself in the lineage of Western icons reimagined for the modern age. Is it Die Hard in a jumpsuit? On this week's Video episode Phillip is joined by Cayley Landsberg from Once Over With Cayley on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@OnceOverwithCayley The two of them discuss the GREAT film noir The Big Sleep directed by Howard Hawks. Phillip starts by reading the general information on the movie with some facts thrown in. It's then time for Listener Opinions from Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Phillip and Cayley then discuss all things The Big Sleep and Bogart and Bacall. If you don't like old movies Lauren Bacall said, "It's not an old movie if you haven't seen it yet." So everyone check this movie out. It was a very fun discussion. Then it's time to answer whether they noticed anything Tarantino might have liked or used in a film. They then individually rate the movie. Phillip and Cayley talk about whether they would buy this movie, rent it, or find it for free. It's then time for Phil's Film Favorite of the Week; The Big Trail (1930) (4 stars). Cayley gives some recommendations that she has watched; Thanksgiving (2023), Juror #2 (2024), and Vulcanizadora (2024). Phillip then promotes next week's show, when he will be by himself for 1978's Game of Death. Thanks for listening.

Murder-for-Hire Gone Hog Wild: Bourbon, Pigs & A Nun's Van In what reads like a crime novel penned by Quentin Tarantino, Jeal Sutherland's murder-for-hire plot had it all: pigs, a nun, a dead goose with a threatening note, and a bottle of Wild Turkey bourbon. The 57-year-old New York man has now pleaded guilty to attempting to have his romantic rival killed and fed to hogs—seriously. Federal prosecutors revealed a dizzying list of absurdities and chilling details, including an FBI informant who played along, recorded everything, and even joked about renting a van from a nun. Sutherland wanted his rival “gone,” and he wanted it done dirty—first a beating, then disposal at a Pennsylvania pig farm. The price? $1,450, an E-ZPass, and top-shelf bourbon. But this wasn't just deranged fantasy. Sutherland paid the money. The FBI had the receipts. And now, he faces up to 10 years behind bars. This episode dissects the psychology of control, delusion, and desperation behind the plot—why Sutherland orchestrated it, and how close he came to succeeding. It's one of the most bizarre murder-for-hire cases in recent memory, and yet it could've ended in a gruesome tragedy. #jealsutherland #murderforhire #truecrimeweird #pigfarmplot #federaltrial #hiredkillerplot #fbiundercover #hogfarmmurder #wildturkeyplot #romanticrevenge Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? King Hu is one of China's most influential filmmakers, famous for his historical martial arts films which helped to popularise the wuxia (‘martial chivalry') genre in the 1960s and 70s with classic films like 'Come Drink with Me' (1966), 'Dragon Inn' (1967), and 'A Touch of Zen' (1971) - the latter of which he received the Technical Grand Prize at the 1975 Cannes Film Festival. His work has inspired directors ranging from Tsui Hark to Ang Lee, Zhang Yimou to Quentin Tarantino, and since his death in 1997 at the age of 64, organisations like the King Hu Foundation have continued to promote and champion his work. As a result, much of his exquisite output is now readily available around the world in lovingly restored digital formats. To discuss the life and work of this extraordinary filmmaker, we welcome two King Hu Foundation board members: Michael Berry, Director of the Center for Chinese Studies at UCLA, who is also a Professor of Contemporary Chinese Cultural Studies; and the filmmaker, Céline Zen, a Chinese-born, France-based producer and director. We discuss the early life of the Beijing-born auteur who was forced into exile in Hong Kong after the Chinese Communist Revolution, and his journey from artist to actor, writer, and director, becoming one of the biggest talents at new Shaw Brothers production company before his relocation to Taiwan. We discuss the meaning of 'wuxia'; his influences - from his love of calligraphy to Ming dynasty history and the Chinese Opera - and how, despite his critical praise, his films were not always successful in their day, and the toll this took on his work in later life. A huge thank you to Audrey Edwards at the King Hu Foundation for her help in organising this episode.LINKSKing Hu Foundation website: https://kinghufoundationusa.org/King Hu Foundation on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kinghufoundation/ Michael Berry's website: https://michael-berry.com/ Michael Berry on the UCLA website: https://www.alc.ucla.edu/person/michael-berry/ Michael Berry on Douban: http://site.douban.com/108600/Michael Berry on Weibo: https://weibo.com/bairuiwenMichael Berry on X: https://x.com/BairuiwenMichael Berry on ClubHouse: http://clubhousedb.com/user/bairuiwen Buy Michael Berry's books on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/stores/Michael-Berry/author/B001HCVQQWCéline Zen on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/celine-zen-7a6570195/Céline Zen on IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm4508435/Trailer for Céline Zen's 'Vous êtes jeunes, vous êtes beaux' (2018): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vIOOeqph08A tribute to King Hu: https://youtu.be/rGueQmyN_kMKung Fu Movie Guide Podcast - 'Dragon Inn' special - Live in Lewes with Katrina Durden: https://bit.ly/KFMGPodKatrinaDurdenLiveBuy King Hu films on Blu-ray in the UK from 88 Films and Eureka Entertainment: 'Come Drink with Me' (https://88-films.myshopify.com/products/come-drink-with-me-88-asia-24), 'Dragon Inn' (https://eurekavideo.co.uk/movie/dragon-inn/), 'A Touch of Zen' (https://eurekavideo.co.uk/movie/a-touch-of-zen/), 'The Fate of Lee Khan' (https://eurekavideo.co.uk/movie/the-fate-of-lee-khan/), 'The Valiant Ones' (https://eurekavideo.co.uk/movie/the-valiant-ones/), 'Raining in the Mountain' (https://eurekavideo.co.uk/movie/raining-in-the-mountain-kong-shan-ling-yu/), 'Legend of the Mountain' (https://eurekavideo.co.uk/movie/legend-of-the-mountain/).King Hu profile on Kung Fu Movie Guide: https://bit.ly/KingHuProfile 'Dragon Inn' review on Kung Fu Movie Guide: https://bit.ly/DragonGateInn'A Touch of Zen' review on Kung Fu Movie Guide: https://bit.ly/ATouchOfZen Hosted on Acast. This week, we watch the classic that changed the film industry forever. Indie attempts to copy the formula defined most of the rest of the 90s, but nothing came close to what this film achieves. This films iconic status has not diminished over the years, and it remains one of the funniest films of all time. Pulp Fiction (1994), directed by Quentin Tarantino.
Jay takes a seat at the world's most uncomfortable dinner party courtesy of Mike's latest cinematic punishment: Sushi Girl (2012), a post-Tarantino crime flick where the tension is raw, the violence is extra crispy, and the titular sushi girl lies perfectly still while a bunch of washed-up crooks yell at each other in between flashbacks. Mark Hamill wonderfully hams it up, Tony Todd tries to class up the joint, and somewhere in the middle a rogue's gallery of B-movie/slumming A-list stars arrive; including Michael Biehn, Danny Trejo, Sonny Chiba, Jeff Fahey and Noah Hathaway, the now all-grown-up guy who played Atreyu from The Neverending Story! Jay tries to figure out if this is a crime thriller, a food safety violation, or both, and then the guys count down their Bottom Five Meals—cinematic servings of food so unappetizing they'll have you reaching for antacid. And if all that weren't enough to settle your stomach, the guys close out the show by paying tribute to the recently-passed Tony Todd with a memorial tribute round of Kick Two, Pick Two. So grab your chopsticks, question your life choices, and join the podcast that wields films like deadly weapons where, like sushi, revenge is served cold.

The journalist Maureen Dowd has many notches in her belt, from feats like winning a Pulitzer Prize and writing pivotal profiles on some of the world’s most powerful people. She shone light on Elon Musk before DOGE and Uma Thurman’s emotional struggle with Quentin Tarantino, all of which is captured in her latest book, Notorious. Even for her, though, the process of writing remains fickle. Both Maureen and I want our writing to place readers in conversation with the greats who came before us, and whether we succeed is always up for interpretation. We never stop trying, though — and only occasionally read the comments. We also commune over a shared value of education once Maureen tells me I was the reason she decided to pursue graduate school. What if Tarantino told Guy Ritchie an idea for a movie who wrote it down but then lost it during a storm when someone picked it up and tried to connect the dots that got smeared in rain? The result would probably be Joe Carnahan's action-comedy “Smokin' Aces”. A love letter bidding farewell to the 'Golden Age of Cinema,' Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood" revisits a world you fully want to live in. A magnificent recreation - and readjustment - of how things both were and should have been. One could even argue that this fascinating intersection of movie history and human history should have been the last film of Tarantino's outstanding career. Ruth Metzger joins Dennis to relish the cinematic treasures of 1969 Los Angeles, a place we can never get back to. And away we go... Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Phil and Emily are kicking off their new mini-series The Films of “The Todds”—a deep dive into the wildly different worlds of Todd Haynes, Todd Phillips, Todd Solondz, and Todd Field. Plus, they're joined by special guest Amy Smart for a bonus interview, where she reflects on her experience making the movie and the 2000s comedy boom.Get ready for gross-out gags, dorm room disasters, and a trip down memory lane with the ultimate party movie that defined a generation.BONUS: Phil sits down with actress Amy Smart to reflect on her early career, from the chaos of Road Trip to the over-the-top antics of Starsky & Hutch. They dive into the wild world of 2000s comedy, the pressure of filming iconic scenes, and the unique challenges of being the “straight person” in movies full of larger-than-life characters like Tom Green and Ben Stiller.Amy shares behind-the-scenes stories about navigating fratty set environments, balancing TV and film work, and the surreal experience of going from indie darling to mainstream star. Plus, she reveals the surprising connection between Todd Phillips and Quentin Tarantino that even die-hard fans might not know.

Send us a textWild bets, hot streaks, and a little market seduction. The acid capitalist is back, sunburnt and shirtless, broadcasting straight from St. Barts with sand in his toes and a dollar short in his hand. This is Confessions Part II, the origin story sharpened, scuffed, and refitted for today's volatility junkies. If finance had a Tarantino cut, this is it.We rewind to the end of 2002. The Nasdaq's wreckage still smoldering. The S&P up 9 percent. Me? Flat for the month, down 4.9 percent since launch. A hedge fund rookie trading like he's strapped to a rocket and reading tea leaves in reverse. There were no parades. No consensus. Just my gut, and it was twitching.I placed my first real bet, short the dollar. The Dixie was at 110. Five years later, it would bleed to 70. Back then, they laughed. Now they squint at the same charts, claiming they saw it coming. They didn't. But I did. Commodities stopped dying. Gold stopped bleeding. Something turned. And I felt it.This episode isn't about P/E ratios. It's about instinct. Rage. Faith. Hunger. It's about building Eclectica not as a fund but as a fever dream. I didn't chase storms. I waited for them. I didn't knock. I picked the lock. That investor? That was me.We talk Amsterdam Commodities, no website, no pitch deck, no interest in seduction. It smelled of hash and history. It was cheap, opaque, and irresistible. And it hit. Like a ten-bagger. Like something better than sex. No, seriously, would you rather have a one-night stand or a tenfold return on your weirdest position?Oh, and then there's Brazil. The one that ghosted me. The stock I dumped, live, while staring through the glass of their too-polished HQ. They didn't show me respect. So I showed them the door. This is the cockpit view of macro. Of madness. Of the market as mythology. No suits. No soft landings. Just you, me, and a twitch in the eye of the storm.
