What does 1692 have to do with 1775? More than you might think. The families of 1692 did not vanish from history. One to two generations after the Salem witch trials, descendants of both the accused and the accusers were drilling on village training fields, defying British soldiers, and dying on the same battlefields. Israel Putnam, one of the Revolution's boldest generals, was born in Salem Village, raised in a family at the center of 1692, and though he moved to Connecticut, he answered the call when Massachusetts needed him most. From Leslie's Retreat in Salem to the Battle of Menotomy, Bunker Hill, the siege of Boston, Long Island, and Saratoga, the men of Essex County were present from the first confrontation to the wider war. And Benjamin Franklin's tie to the Salem witch trials runs closer than most people know. This episode connects two of American history's most significant chapters and asks: what did the witch trial era leave behind, and how did it shape the people who built this country?Danvers and Salem historian Dan Gagnon, author of A Salem Witch: A Biography of Rebecca Nurse, returns to The Thing About Witch Hunts to tell stories of the North Shore's role in the American Revolution as part of America 250. From a standoff at a toll bridge to the bloodiest stretch of road on Patriots Day 1775, the story of Essex County and the Lexington Alarm is one most Americans were never taught.Hosts Josh Hutchinson and Sarah Jack trace the thread from the Salem witch trials through Lexington and Concord, from the Rebecca Nurse Homestead to the halls of the Continental Congress, and from the accused of 1692 to the soldiers of 1775.What You Will Learn:The through-line between 1692 and 1775 that changes how you understand bothWhy Leslie's Retreat in Salem months before Lexington and Concord matters more than you have been toldWhat happened when Salem witch trial family names started showing up on revolutionary muster rollsIsrael Putnam: the founding-era general with Salem Village roots whose story was nearly erased from history, and whyA founding father with a direct family tie to the Salem witch trials, and what that connection revealsWhat one brutal day at the Battle of Menotomy cost a single Massachusetts town, and why they brought their dead homeWhat you can see at the Rebecca Nurse Homestead today that quietly holds the story of two centuriesDan Gagnon leads walking tours in Danvers and the Rebecca Nurse Homestead is open seasonally. #AmericanRevolution #America250 #IsraelPutnam #LesliesRetreat #BattleOfMemotomy #BattleOfBunkerHill #SiegeOfBoston #LexingtonAndConcord #LexingtonAlarm #PatriotsDay1775 #BattleOfLongIsland #FrenchAndIndianWar #BostonTeaParty #GeneralGage #GeorgeWashington #BenjaminFranklin #RebeccaNurse #RebeccaNurseHomestead #DanversAlarmList #Minutemen #ContinentalCongress #CoerciveActs #Marblehead #Menotomy #Arlington #EssexCounty #NorthShore #ColonialHistory #AmericanHistory #FoundingFathers #RevolutionaryWarLinks Rebecca Nurse Homestead: rebeccanurse.orgA Salem Witch: A Biography of Rebecca Nurse by Dan Gagnon: www.bookshop.org/Shop/endwitchhuntsEnd Witch Hunts endwitchhunts.orgAbout Witch Hunts aboutwitchhunts.comSalem Witch Trials History YouTube: https://youtube.com/@aboutwitchhunts

Munaf Manji and Dave Essler talk betting for Monday. Munaf Manji and Dave Essler break down a loaded Monday betting card with all three NBA playoff games on deck, plus a run through the most interesting MLB leans before locking in their official best bets. The show opens with some Boston sports flavor as Dave reflects on Patriots Day, the Boston Marathon, and the annual Red Sox morning start, then quickly shifts into the playoff betting board where home teams and unders dominated the opening weekend. From there, Munaf and Dave work game by game through Raptors versus Cavaliers, Hawks versus Knicks, and Timberwolves versus Nuggets, focusing on how the market has adjusted after Game 1 and where value may still exist. In the Cleveland matchup, both hosts see offensive potential again, with Dave preferring a first half over because of the way Game 1 was distorted by a wild fourth quarter, while Munaf leans harder into Cleveland's edge in the paint and Donovan Mitchell's ability to take over another postseason game. The Knicks and Hawks game gets a different treatment, with Dave again looking toward a first half scoring angle while Munaf argues Atlanta can stay within the number if it gets more support around its top scorers. Dave adds a double double prop on Onyeka Okongwu, tying the bet directly to Atlanta's need for better secondary production. In the late game, the conversation centers on whether the Timberwolves and Nuggets are due for a more offensive script after the opener stayed under despite a huge second quarter. Dave thinks the lowered total offers value on the full game over, while Munaf backs Minnesota with the points, likes the first half over, and expects Anthony Edwards to respond with a stronger scoring night. Dave also adds Rudy Gobert for a double double as another way to play Minnesota's need for help around Edwards. After the playoff board, the show turns to baseball where Dave shares leans on Dodgers Rockies, Rays Reds, Seattle, the Angels matchup, Miami, and Royals Orioles, making it clear where he sees price and total opportunities even if not every angle is a final wager yet. Munaf also brings up the Mets' ugly losing streak and the existence of a market on their next win, leading to a brief conversation about the frustration surrounding that team. The episode wraps with the official best bets, and the hosts go with star-driven plays. Dave takes Shohei Ohtani to hit a home run at plus money, while Munaf backs Donovan Mitchell over 27.5 points after Mitchell's 32-point opener. It is a focused episode built around Game 2 adjustments, first half versus full game betting decisions, useful MLB board notes, and two marquee-player best bets that reflect the larger themes of the show. Griffin Warner talks betting for Monday. Griffin Warner is back for episode 32 of What I Bet on the Straight Outta Vegas AM feed, recording late on April 20 and covering three sports on the holiday Monday card — European soccer, the 2026 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs first round, and a full MLB slate — opening with a transparent note that the previous best bet on the Braves-Phillies over did not cash after Atlanta scored nine runs and Philadelphia was shut out with zero. In Serie A, Griffin leans Lecce plus one quarter as a home underdog against Fiorentina, a club stretched thin by Europa Conference League commitments, and finds the under at two and a quarter goals equally appealing given Lecce's deeply defensive profile. In the Premier League, he is waiting for West Ham to reach plus one quarter before playing the side against Crystal Palace, whose manager Oliver Glasner is expected to depart at the end of the season, with the under two and a half his biggest interest for now. On the NHL side, Scott Seidenberg of Pregame.com contributed useful playoff totals history showing last year's playoff average posted total was 5.8 against an average outcome of 6.2, suggesting some market adjustment potential. Griffin fades the Pittsburgh Penguins at minus 152 in Game 2 of their Battle of Pennsylvania series and backs the Philadelphia Flyers at plus 134 after the Pens' weak Game 1 performance. He is genuinely unimpressed by the Carolina Hurricanes despite their 2-0 shutout win over Ottawa and finds the Senators at plus 128 in Game 2 a live underdog play. Minnesota's dominant 6-1 road win in Game 1 over the Dallas Stars makes the Wild plus 115 and over six his two plays in that series, while in the Oilers-Ducks Game 1 opener he leans the over six and a half rather than backing Anaheim outright despite acknowledging the upset potential his stepdad is calling for. On the MLB side he covers the full card from the Patriots Day early game featuring Jack Flaherty at plus 124 for Detroit against Sonny Gray and the Red Sox, through Spencer Arrighetti starting for the injury-depleted Astros against Slade Cecconi in Cleveland where he backs the Guardians at minus 113, to the Cardinals-Marlins under eight lean with Michael McGreevey's poor underlying numbers a concern, the Braves too expensive at minus 160 on the road despite Bryce Elder's excellent start, the Cubs at plus 102 at home against Aaron Nola with Philadelphia's defense and inconsistency making home value on Colin Rea the right play, the Royals at plus 104 with Seth Lugo against Kyle Bradish and an overvalued Baltimore club, the over at Coors Field with Justin Wrobleski facing José Quintana, over eight with Dylan Cease and the Blue Jays against Reed Detmers and the Angels, and the under eight in the Athletics-Mariners finale with J.T. Ginn a scary arm to back in Seattle against Emerson Hancock. Official best bet is the Chicago Cubs plus 102 at home behind Colin Rea. “If I just focus on competing, it's turned out to be really fun and turned out to work in my favor each time. That's been the mindset: Let's just race, focus on competing, and not really worry about the clock. That's a lot of how I approached Boston.”After finishing one spot off of the Team USA squads in the marathon and the 10,000m for the Olympics and the half marathon for the World Road Running Championships, Jess McLain has made it a habit of being so close, yet just off of these national teams. But on Patriots Day in Boston, she kicked it open, running a smart, gutsy race that saw her surge through the Newton Hills strategically with Emma Bates and Sara Hall chasing a lead pack and then closing in 5:15 seconds for the final mile. Jess cemented her place as one of the top contenders in American distance running. In today's conversation, we get into what changed with this particular marathon build, from training under coach David Roche to how she's getting used to these major marathon scenes. We talk a lot about the importance of carbs and how that's also been a game changer for her as well as why her drive to compete instead of focusing on times works so well. With big goals on the horizon and the 2028 Olympic cycle now underway, Jess McClain might just be getting started and really coming into her own as a marathoner.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Jess McClain | @jesstonn on InstagramSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Big name sodas are rolling out bold new flavors in 2025, but the real buzz is happening in the prebiotic pop aisle. TALK TO ME, TEXT ITEaster Monday brings a mix of solemn reflection and heated debate as we discuss Pope Francis's unexpected passing and what this means for Catholics worldwide – both devout and those who've stepped away from regular religious practice. The conversation takes a sharp political turn when examining former President Trump's recent "thinking out loud" comment about deporting "homegrowns next." This off-the-cuff remark ignited immediate controversy with political commentator Simone Sanders and Representative Glenn Ivey promoting the unfounded fear that Black Americans could be targeted for deportation. We cut through the race-baiting rhetoric to analyze what Trump likely meant about violent criminals while acknowledging the constitutional impossibility of deporting American citizens.Perhaps most passionate is our examination of the Boston Marathon's gender division policies. Coinciding with Patriots Day's 250th anniversary, this iconic American sporting event has permitted biological males to compete in women's divisions since 2018. We highlight the case of Ria Susing (born Robert Sheen Young), who has competed in female categories over 338 times, winning medals in 140+ instances – each victory displacing deserving women athletes. This practice fundamentally undermines athletic fairness and the competitive opportunities women fought decades to secure. When even "Women's Running Magazine" features biological males on covers meant to champion female athletes, we must ask: what spaces remain protected for women in sport? The episode concludes with a thought-provoking question about political awakening. What issues first captured your attention in your formative years? Was it military service, civil rights, environmental concerns, or something entirely different? As we get close to Patriots Day, let us remember that the fighting along "Battle Road" and the entire siege of Boston involved thousands of men from hundreds of communities. On April 19, 1775 as the "Lexington Alarm" spread throughout the region, towns mustered their militia and they marched towards the fight. Needham sent 185 men to fight the Redcoats that day, losing five men in the process. “I think I'm a guy who can win these races on the right day. I just need to prove that. I think the way to prove that, at least to myself, is to finish in the top three… I'd rather focus on getting on the podium in some of these races."Welcome back Conner Mantz to the CITIUS MAG Podcast for his 9th career appearance on the show. He's back ahead of his return to the 2025 Boston Marathon and he's bringing some serious momentum with him. In the past year alone, Mantz has shattered the American half marathon record in Houston, backed it up with another 57:15 performance at the NYC Half, which is a non-record eligible course, yet quite the performance. He's continued his streak of finishing as the top American in every major marathon since the fall of 2023.We talk about what's different this time around in Boston after his 11th place finish there in 2023, what he's learned from racing shoulder-to-shoulder with the world's best, and what he takes from another upcoming race with Clayton Young. We also go through some of the top contenders in the field and Conner expresses his thoughts on who's got a shot of winning and what he's taken away from each of those competitors. We explore where his mindset is heading into Patriots Day 2025 – a day that could crown the next American to break through on Boston's legendary course. It's been more than a decade since we've had an American man win – and Conner Mantz has a shot.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Conner Mantz | @connermantz on Instagram SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Big name sodas are rolling out bold new flavors in 2025, but the real buzz is happening in the prebiotic pop aisle. While the nation's big birthday party is coming up next year, in just a matter of weeks, Massachusetts will mark 250 years since the "shot heard 'round the world" - the battles of Lexington and Concord, which sparked the war against the British for American independence. The colonists were ready for the British that day thanks to careful planning and a group of militia members called the "Minute Men". Even today, the Minute Men's spirit is preserved by the Concord Minute Men, led by Captain Carl Sweeney. He talks with Nichole about what it's like to re-enact American history and their plans for this year's Patriots Day celebrations, and shares a bit of history, too. This segment is the second interview in our new series, "Revolutionary Roots", where we take a closer look at the stories, people, events, and local ties that connect New England to the nation's upcoming 250th anniversary in 2026.
On today's episode, I talk to TV writer Josh Zetumer. Originally from San Diego, Josh broke into screenwriting on the back of a script that got on the Black List. This led to working on Quantum of Solace, which led to the 2014 RoboCop reboot and the Peter Berg-directed Patriots Day in 2016. Most recently, Josh adapted and showran the FX show about the Irish Troubles, Say Nothing, which was easily one of the best shows of 2024! Joshua Zetumer serves as the showrunner, executive producer, and head writer of FX's SAY NOTHING, an adaptation of the New York Times best-selling and National Book Critics Circle Award for Non-Fiction winning book SAY NOTHING: A TRUE STORY OF MURDER AND MEMORY IN NORTHERN IRELAND by Patrick Radden Keefe. Zetumer has also written on a number of global box office hits, including ROBOCOP from director Jose Padilha and the action thriller PATRIOTS DAY about the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013 and the subsequent terrorist manhunt. The FX's limited series SAY NOTHING is a gripping story of murder and memory in Northern Ireland during The Troubles. Spanning four decades, the series opens with the shocking disappearance of Jean McConville, a single mother of ten who was abducted from her home in 1972 and never seen alive again. Telling the story of various Irish Republican Army (IRA) members, SAY NOTHING explores the extremes some people will go to in the name of their beliefs, the way a deeply divided society can suddenly tip over into armed conflict, the long shadow of radical violence for all affected, and the emotional and psychological costs of a code of silence. In this interview, we talk about his personal background and influences, the decision to take on projects like ROBOCOP and PATRIOT'S DAY, the opportunity to return to personal filmmaking with SAY NOTHING, The balance between creative control and collaboration with directors and actors, and much more. As a special note, this was part of our new LIVE interview series in partnership with Buzztown, a community for serious screenwriters, where students also participated in this interview.
