In our second episode this week, we're joined by Penn State graduate Michael Weinreb who is a freelance writer primarily focusing on college football. Michael joins to talk about his career, what goes into writing his Substack, how growing up in State College shaped his writing career and what it takes to write a book. You can subscribe to Michael's Substack called “Throwbacks: A Newsletter About Sports History and Culture” by going to throwbacks.substack.com. Additionally, his books, including Season of Saturdays, are available pretty much anywhere books are sold. Follow Darian and Steve on Twitter @StuffSomersSays and @SteveSamspell. First episode from this week's podcast, Darian and Steve recap the College Football National Championship, chat about Penn State's newest transfer and why Darian isn't a fan of the Palestra game. Be sure to look out for our interview with Penn State alum Michael Weinreb this week as well. (Also, Steve lost power at the end of the episode so that's why it cuts a little short.) Back-to-back episodes this week! Michael Weinreb is a State College native who has written for high-profile outlets such as Bleacher Report, VICE, and the Ringer as a freelance writer so I sat down with him to talk Penn State's atrocious start to the season, mulligan seasons for most programs, and two-sport legends like Bo Jackson. Enjoy!
For many Penn State fans, one of the highlights of the entire quarantine came last week when NBC Sports replayed the 1987 Fiesta Bowl, Penn State's dramatic upset victory over to Miami to claim its second national title. The guys talk about that game, the experience of watching it back in 2020, hearing stories from former players on the Alumni Association livestream, and whether they can get into replays of old games. Elsewhere, Kevin gets lots on hiking trails behind the Arboretum; Brandon Noble sets his parents' car on fire, and Chris explains how Penn State nicknamed its positions on defense. Enjoy. Stay safe. Stay sanitized. Stay home. #WeAreHere's the Michael Weinreb article referenced in the show: The Night College Football Went to HellHOSTED BY: Brandon Noble, Mike Herr, Kevin Horne, Chris Buchignani
You've found The Crowley Show and we just cannot stop thinking about our EX. At least that is what AB is tweeting about...DAMMIT there I go thinking about him again!! Crowley takes out that dumb line of thinking by saying of course we can't stop thinking about you, the entire NATION is following you're antics and we just love watching our EX crash and burn. Speaking of crash and burn, Crowley thinks the Browns will, but there still is a sense of absurd optimism. Michael Weinreb of The Ringer wrote about that optimism and joins our show to discuss it. We then talk about the idiot Browns fan that got a Super Bowl 54 champions tattoo ahead of this season, which actually triggers Crowley on tattoo's in general.

A bit of a different NLDN40 this week as we saw Jameis Winston this weekend be crowned the new Heisman trophy winner and the new name to watch out for in College Football. We invite onto the pod one of our favourite College Football writers, Michael Weinreb from Sportsonearth.com to talk all things Jameis as well as running through some of the upcoming bowl game match ups and who to look out next season in the 2014 NFL draft. We stay on the college tip and talk about some Youngstown Boys, the incredible new ESPN documentary about Ohio State with our resident Ohio Native and great mate Joe Cohen who also delivers his damning verdict at the end of another miserable season of Cleveland Browns fandom. Don't worry folks we squeeze in all the relevant NFL chat and give you some more info on our SuperBowl party on 2nd Feb. Classic NLD40 people - enjoy!
As well as breaking down the key events of another epic week in the NFL, Inie and James are honoured to welcome Grantland.com writer and Bigger than the Game author Michael Weinreb to discuss the premiere of this week's 30 for 30 - "You don't know Bo". A true brainbox on the subject, Michael helps us to explain the Bo phenomenon in real detail as well as celebrating Johnny Manziel's Heisman win on the same night. A truly great North London 40.
