Keith Byars, a former first-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles who spent thirteen seasons in the NFL and remains among the all-time leaders in running back receptions, joins Says Who Sports to break it all down like few can, from his “should-have-been” Heisman Trophy season as a junior at Ohio State in 1984 (he finished 2nd to Doug Flutie) to how he dealt with the devastating injury that dashed the big expectations for him the following season at Ohio State to all things NFL, including what he learned from legendary coaches he played for, including Buddy Ryan, Don Shula and Bill Parcells, and great players he played with, from Reggie White to Dan Marino. Byars shares stories galore from his days at Ohio State, including his influence on former Buckeye head coach Jim Tressel, who coached running backs at Ohio State while Byars was there, in spurring Tressel to become a student of the running game. Byars recalls his excitement at receiving a “spicy” phone call from Woody Hayes as a high school recruit, and his appreciation for the many candid conversations he enjoyed with mentor Hayes while Byars was at Ohio State. Byars shares stories of powerful moments on the field and in the locker room with the fiery Ryan and Parcells, including Parcells's relentless coaching approach to hold every player on the roster accountable, not just the stars or starters. Byars recalls Parcells's reliance on him as a team leader responsible for helping younger players understand what it took to succeed in the NFL, ultimately helping to lead the Parcells-coached Patriots to Byars's only Super Bowl appearance. Byars also shares his perspectives on expectations for Ohio State football this season, indicating that championships are the standard at the school and stressing the importance of restoring the program's winning ways versus rival Michigan (Byars shares a story of being trolled by Jim Harbaugh at a golf tournament in 2021 after Michigan beat Ohio State that year) and again capturing the B1G Championship after a three-year dry spell.

His small Ohio town didn't offer football until the 9th grade. Because of that, Randy Gradishar fancied himself more as a basketball player because he'd spent far more time on the court than the gridiron. Thankfully college coaches didn't feel the same way. Randy was courted by a number of colleges, which caught him off guard because he had never planned on attending college. His parents couldn't afford it and he figured he would start working after high school like everyone else he knew. Instead, Woody Hayes connected with Randy and as importantly, his father and off he went to Ohio State. His success as a Buckeye caught the eye of NFL Scouts, so much so that he was the 14th overall pick by the Brocos in 1974. Being his unassuming self, Randy didn't know he was a first rounder or even where Colorado was, he just knew he needed to get to Denver after head coach John Ralston called him. His 10-year NFL career in Denver was spent immersed in the Orange Crush Defense, multiple Pro-Bowls, a Super Bowl appearance, NFL Defensive Player of the Year and much more. So much more that after 35 years of retirement from the game, he was finally voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2024.

Wrestling.... Strictly Business! For a Cincinnati high school wrestler, to qualify for the Ohio High School Athletic Association's State Wrestling Tournament is an arduous task at the very least. Attaining and maintaining a given body weight-class, wrestle-offs, intense practices, managing a disciplined approach to nutrition, continuing the in-season strength training and conditioning program goals, and of course..... lots of winning, especially in the district and regional tournaments that are along the way to Columbus, Ohio where the OHSAA State Wrestling Tournament is conducted at St. John Arena on the campus of Ohio State University.  And that's the way it went for ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power Podcast guest Greg Strochinsky, a Cincinnati Oak Hills High School Hall of Fame wrestler who had the privilege to be coached by an Ohio High School wrestling coaching icon, Dick Roche. The coach, a stoic military veteran, was a strict disciplinarian who didn't veer off course too much when it came to following and enforcing rules. He was the Woody Hayes of Oak Hills High School who despised losing and demanded that his wrestlers felt the same.  Conversely, Strochinsky was the loose, fun loving student athlete who oozed self confidence 24/7. His self-given nickname was ''strictly business', which he prominently displayed on his shoes, his pick-up truck, t-shirts, chains, etc. However, 'Stroh' shared the same desire for victory as did his coach. And, Coach Roche and Assistant OHHS Wrestling Coach Ken Hauck, a Championship Miami Redskin defensive lineman and former OHHS wrestler himself, knew that they had themselves a potential star in the making and didn't alter the "strictly business" mojo.  Unlike a lot of today's high school wrestlers, Strochinsky never stepped onto a wrestling mat until he was a seventh grader. In fact, it was by chance that his junior high school gym teacher, Randy Owen,  announced and encouraged the lanky twelve year old to explore the sport at an after school practice session. It wasn't long before the hook was set and Strochinsky was well on his way to becoming an Oak Hills High School wrestling star. Upon leaving junior high, he entered high school 10th grade, bringing a shiny winning record along in tow. Initially, Coach Roche wasn't greeting him with hugs and adulation. But, the two figures combined their passion for winning. Stroh felt a bond to Roche and never wanted to disappoint the legendary coach. Finally, as an undefeated senior and state qualifier making the two hour drive to Columbus and walking into an arena packed with thousands of wrestling fans and supporters, Strochinsky met the sting of defeat against a well skilled, experienced state meet opponent in the semi-final match. And, not one to sulk or mope from the loss, he'd only felt the emotions of thinking that he'd let his coach down.  ... Coach Roche passed away at the age of 73. Greg Strochinsky became instrumental in starting the Dick Roche Memorial Scholarship which can be awarded to dedicated wrestlers from the school.

Bill Connelly began his life in the sports business as an Athletic Trainer for the Cincinnati Stingers of the World Hockey Association and wrapped it up as a Special Projects Manager for FC Cincinnati of Major League Soccer. However, the majority of his storied career was spent with the Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League - where he retired in 2017 as the team's Director of Operations. This St. Clairsville, Ohio native was inspired to pursue the sports business after the brutality of a full team "pile on tackle" in High School inspired him to switch his focus to become an Athletic Trainer (versus a full-contact Athlete). While a student at The Ohio State University, he had the opportunity to learn his craft under the staff of Coach Woody Hayes, which led to an introduction to the Bengals founder and legendary icon of football - Paul Brown. Over his 41-year career with the Bengals, Bill rose from Assistant Trainer to eventually becoming the Director of Operations for the team. On this Monday Buckeye Talk, it's a deep look into how Ohio State football has done in big games in the four years under head coach Ryan Day. To analyze that, Doug Lesmerises, Nathan Baird and Stephen Means have to look at the evidence from a lot of different angles. What is a big game? How does Ohio State's big game record under Day compare to teams like Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, Clemson, Penn State and more? How does Day's record in big games compare to past OSU coaches like Urban Meyer, Jim Tressel, John Cooper and Woody Hayes? And there are four questions asked of text subscribers and discussed, looking at whether the Buckeyes have the necessary qualities to win games. Do they have enough: Elite talent Smart coaching Fundamentals Motivation This conversation plays off the Friday episode that relived the biggest win of the Day era -- the 2020 semifinal win over Clemson. So make sure you listen to that episode to pair with this one. Thanks for listening to Buckeye Talk from cleveland.com. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

It's the final episode of our three-part Ohio State-Michigan miniseries here in April on Buckeye Talk, as Doug Lesmerises, Nathan Baird, Stephen Means and Jimmy Watkins turn the discussion toward intangibles. Part 1 was feelings in the rivalry. Part 2 was football in the rivalry. Part 3 is how the feelings affect the football. First (0:30), the guys talk about Michigan's current trash talk in the series after two straight wins and what, if anything, Ohio State can do about it. That includes a discussion (25:14) about some social media words exchanged recently by recruits on both sides. Then (32:44), it's what Ohio State might be like as an underdog in The Game this season, if that happens. Then (35:29) comes a long discussion about what happens in the rivalry when the talent is pretty equal. That includes a look at history and the record in the series, since Woody Hayes, when both teams are ranked in the top 10. Finally (1:06:53) there's an insider vs. outsider discussion, and a debate (1:13:45) on whether the last two wins for the Wolverines were more about what Michigan did right or what Ohio State did wrong. Simply put, Mike Westhoff is the greatest special teams coach in National Football League history. Sharp-witted, creative, and intensely focused, Westhoff spent 32 years working alongside and learning from some of the legends of the sport—including Don Shula, Dan Marino, Bear Bryant, and Woody Hayes—while revolutionizing the most misunderstood phase of the game. Over the course of 657 games, primarily with the New York Jets and the Miami Dolphins, Westhoff was a relentless innovator—constantly figuring out new ways to help the individual skills of hundreds of players surface and develop. Interviews with dozens of his contemporaries and former players such as Sean Payton, Taysom Hill, and Zach Thomas provide a rare glimpse of NFL life beyond the field—inside the offices, meeting rooms, and locker rooms with one of the game's most unforgettable personalities. But his story isn't just about football. Westhoff also shares intimate details of his multiple battles with cancer and the life lessons learned through the fights. In Figure It Out: My Thirty-Two-Year Journey While Revolutionizing Pro Football's Special Teams (Mascot Books, 2022), Westhoff presents his one-of-a-kind experiences and unfiltered views in his trademark style—a refreshing blend of honest (sometimes brutally so), funny, and poignant. His deep insights into the workings of special teams—illustrated by 27 detailed original diagrams—and timely commentary on the current state of pro football reveal a critical side of the sport that very few truly understand. Paul Knepper covered the Knicks for Bleacher Report. His first book, The Knicks of the Nineties: Ewing, Oakley, Starks and the Brawlers That Almost Won It All was published in 2020. Welcome back to the Bill Bradley Collective, where it's out with 2022 and in with 2023 and our season eight premier. Rivalries in both sports and politics will be the focus of our next six months, and where better than to start but with college football's premier conflict between the Ohio State Buckeyes and Michigan Wolverines. With beginnings dating back to the virtually bloodless Toledo War, a territorially dispute in 1836-37, the football hostilities would begin at centuries end. Tune in this week, as we outline the narrative history of this uniquely competitive and impactful rivalry. From Michigan's dominant early run, the arrival of coach Woody Hayes and the famous Ten Year War of 1969-78 featuring Hayes and then Michigan coach Bo Schembechler, the Wolverines turning the tide back under Lloyd Carr leading to an era of unprecedented Buckeye dominance in the 21st century with Jim Tressel and Urban Mayer, all the way to the present: with both teams featured in this week's College Football Playoff and Michigan capturing consecutive victories for the first time in over twenty years under alum and prodigal son Jim Harbaugh. Michigan/Ohio State has long been one of the sport's consequential regular season showdown and continues to frame the narrative of the national college football landscape. It may be a new year, a new Collective season, but Ohio State/Michigan remains the same: arguably the greatest rivalry in all of sports.

On Saturday, the greatest college football rivalry continues when #3 Michigan visits #2 Ohio State. In honor of the big game, we wanted to re-release an episode from 2017 that we did with Shemy Schembechler, the son of Hall of Fame Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler. He has a bunch of good stories to share, especially since he now lives in Columbus, Ohio. This was one of Jamy's first interviews but the insights and entertainment value still hold up today.  Enjoy! Original show notes are below ... Glenn “Shemy” Schembechler serves as the President of GES Advisory Company. Shemy has spent the majority of his life and professional career in the football industry, growing up as the son of legendary coach Glenn E. “Bo” Schembechler. He has evaluated talent for such high-level programs as the University of Michigan, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Chicago Bears, the Washington Redskins, and the Seattle Seahawks. In addition to his father, Shemy has studied under accomplished coaches Gary Moeller, Lloyd Carr, Marty Schottenheimer, and Joe Gibbs. They have all had an indelible impact on his career, and his ability to scout and recommend prospects. Shemy has been a part of many championship and playoff teams, and has been able to evaluate or recommend players that have gone on to Pro Bowl careers (Charles Woodson, Ian Gold and Tom Brady, respectively), as well as inductees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame (Joe Montana, Marcus Allen, and Derrick Thomas, respectively). Cornelius and Tim have a multi-layered conversation about how good Buckeyes football was in the 1970s, life after football and the Buckeyes program moving forward. The stories told are cemented in Ohio State football history, and Green is there to tell many of them. What was Cornelius Green's experience like as the first black quarterback to ever start for the Buckeyes? How has he been since his Buckeyes career ended long ago? How much has the game changed, especially as Ohio State becomes a pass-happy offensive juggernaut? And what does he think about the Buckeyes this offseason? In 1958, Glen “Tiger” Ellison created the Run and Shoot offense to turn his community's football fortunes around and in the process he not only saved his job, but rallied the success into a position on Woody Hayes's Ohio State staff. At Middletown High School in Ohio, Ellison and the offense led the team to a 38-7 record and began a revolution. After winning with his Run and Shoot Offense, Tiger went on to become an assistant for Mr. “Three Yards and a Cloud of Dust” himself, Woody Hayes. Woody wrote the Foreword to Tiger'sbook, noting to Ellison, “You're the forward-passingest coach in the country, and they say I'm the most non-passingest coach that ever lived.” Woody was known for saying “When you throw a pass, three things can happen, and two of them are bad." Today, Keith shares a section of Woody Hayes' book Hotline to Victory. Woody's book shares a very detailed approach to the passing game and a philosophy that can be applied to any passing game today.
