Champ was a shut-down NFL cornerback, who is often cited as a comparison player to Travis Hunter because of his ability to play both offense and defense at the University of Georgia, earning him a spot in the CFB Hall of Fame. Champ shares some great stories and insights from his playing days as a kid, a college player, and in the NFL, including his thoughts on playing against and for Steve Spurrier, the difference between college and the NFL, playing against Peyton Manning in college and in the pros, and his current thoughts as a sports dad.

The Sports Experience Podcast with Chris Quinn and Dominic DiTolla
Episode 284 of “The Sports Experience Podcast” is here & we're back on the gridiron discussing Steve Spurrier. A three sport athlete as a high schooler in Tennessee, Spurrier spurned the Volunteers and attended the University of Florida. Spurrier brought success to the Gators' program and won the program's first Heisman Trophy in 1966 as a quarterback. Though Spurrier suffered through an up-and-down NFL career with San Francisco and the expansion Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he found his ultimate calling in coaching. Spurrier enjoyed successful stints as an assistant with Duke, as a head coach in the USFL with the Tampa Bay Bandits and then as a head coach back at Duke with his pass happy offensive scheme. Yet it was at his alma mater in Gainesville where he became one of college football's best head coaches. Spurrier brought the “Fun ‘n' Gun” passing offense to the run heavy SEC in 1990, and then proceeded to dominate college football. In 12 seasons with the Gators, they finished 122-27-1, won 10+ games eight times, captured the 1996 NCAA title and won six SEC titles. After a stint with the lowly Washington Redskins from 2002-2003, Spurrier was hired to lead the South Carolina Gamecocks in 2005. Then over the next 10+ seasons, Spurrier helped South Carolina achieve more success than at any point in their program's history. Overall, Spurrier won 228 games as a college head coach, was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2017 and has been best remembered for bringing pass happy offenses to the SEC. Sign up for free here: https://ryanhawk.kit.com/profile Bob Stoops was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 2021. He was the head football coach at the University of Oklahoma from 1999 to 2016. He led the Sooners to a 191-48 record over his career. His 2000/2001 team won the national championship. He earned the National Coach of the Year award the same season. Since 2020, Stoops has been a head coach in the XFL, winning an XFL Championship in 2023 with the Arlington Renegades. He played college football at the University of Iowa, earning team MVP his senior year as a defensive back. Notes: Coaches Bob has worked for: Hayden Fry at Iowa, Bill Snyder at Kansas State, and Steve Spurrier at Florida. He's worked for some amazing coaches. Relationships are everything. You must connect with people. You must be authentic. Learn from other coaches, but you have to be yourself Sherri Coale: “One of my favorite things about him is he's the busiest man on the planet but never appeared that way. That's a skill and an art. That fascinates me.” What makes a great head coach? They relate to people. They care about them. They can motivate and influence by clearly sharing the vision of the program and inspiring others to get on board. They are decisive people. Most importantly, they know how to connect with people. All leadership is a people business. If you can't connect with others, you'll probably struggle. Creating a “coaches forest” (beyond a tree) - Mike Stoops, Mark Mangino, Mike Leach, Bo Pelini, Kevin Sumlin, Kevin Wilson, Lincoln Riley, and more. How has Bob prepared so many guys to be successful head coaches? Hiring – “I always tried to hire people smarter than me.” A lot of people say this, but not all do this. Coach Stoops looked for people who had a track record of performance… And then he used his gut instincts after he spent time with him. He paid attention to how they treated his secretary, how they treated the waiter at lunch… Some call those the little things, but they were very important to Coach Stoops The overarching theme of the entire conversation was the simplicity of how Coach Stoops built his program. He didn't try to overcomplicate anything. He knew he wanted coaches who were accomplished, high-character people. And he wanted tough players who loved football. Their offenses may have looked exotic but they didn't have a ton of plays installed. They focused on what they did and then practiced it relentlessly so that they would execute better than their opponents. I think there's something beautiful in the simplicity with how he's built his program and the results speak for themselves. Great players want to be coached - Jeremiah Smith, Adrian Peterson. What he looked for in players: They have to LOVE football. Need to be tough and physical. Someone like Dan Cody. From Oklahoma, was skinny, and nobody on the staff wanted to give him a scholarship, but Coach Stoops did, and he turned out to be a great player. Liked to keep local guys home. Off-season workouts create the culture of the team. "We won because we outworked everyone." The attitude of the national championship team - "They were tired of being kicked around." And "I shared with them the history of Oklahoma and let them know the way it should be. When we started, they were a losing team." Josh Heupel - The most valuable recruit ever for Coach Stoops. Mike Leach was a 1 of 1. An original. He seemed relaxed and casual, but he was also very demanding that they do it right. He was also focused on just a few plays instead of trying to do everything. FOCUS. Do what we do Wife Carol - Impressive leader at Mary Kay. Won a pink Cadillac 16 years in a row. National Sales Director. Life/Career Advice - Go hard, be tough, be true to yourself, enjoy the struggle, and look forward to the fight. Nothing great happens without going through struggles first.

In Part 2 of our Best of 2024 podcast, we revisit some of the more memorable excerpts from our interviews over the past year: -- Thomas Austin, on what it's like to deal with being fired by Dabo Swinney. In 2008, Austin was an offensive lineman on the team that helped Swinney secure the head-coaching job with a victory over South Carolina. Swinney even rode on Austin's shoulders to midfield that day to shake the hand of Steve Spurrier. -- Otis Pickett, on returning to his alma mater from Mississippi to be the historian of Clemson University. A significant part of Pickett's mission is introducing and framing the public conversation on Clemson's past, which includes difficult and complicated topics on race. -- Cliff Ellis, former Clemson basketball coach, shares numerous stories about his musical career. Had he not chosen coaching, Ellis could've easily spent his life as a professional musician. In the mid-1960s, his group The Villagers was a sensation and even recorded at the legendary Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Ala. Ellis remembers joining Roy Orbison on stage at a sold-out concert in Dothan, Ala. "If you can perform in front of people with Roy Orbison behind you, you're going to be OK going up against Dean Smith and Mike Krzyzewski," he said. -- Tommy West looks back to a totally different time for Clemson football in the 1990s when the Tigers didn't have any facilities to speak of and were so behind on that front that he once tried to stage an August practice at a local livestock arena.

A year ago on this podcast, Ellis Johnson correctly foreshadowed a Clemson victory in Columbia because in his mind the Tigers were just better. Now he has no idea how to predict Saturday's Top 15 showdown in Death Valley. "I think it's a dead-even game," he said. Johnson has been on both sides of this rivalry, in the mid-1990s at Clemson under Tommy West and as Steve Spurrier's defensive coordinator in Columbia from 2008 to 2011 (and as an analyst under Will Muschamp from 2016-18). Johnson is a closer observer of Clemson now because is son Charlie is a walk-on for the Tigers. Ellis' routine during the season is traveling to Clemson and watching every Tuesday practice. In addition to sizing up this rivalry matchup, Johnson gives his thought on the tumultuous state of college athletics as the model transitions from amateurism to NIL to the full-on revenue sharing to come starting in the summer of 2025. "The NCAA has created a mess," he said. "Letting the top level of college football get too far out of hand is going to seriously damage the overall college football scene. And when that damage happens, it's always the kids that get affected by it."

Each year, there are two games circled on the Florida State football schedule, both intrastate rivalries that have established themselves as important parts of college football's tapestry. While FSU-UF had its heyday during its fierce battles between Bobby Bowden and Steve Spurrier, the series between Florida State and the Miami Hurricanes has maintained its edge and prestige even when one team falters and the national stakes of the matchup fall to the wayside. Seven of the last ten matchups (18 of the last 25!) have been decided by one score, with the series sitting at 35-33 in Miami's favor. The history and importance of this game isn't lost on either side, especially as the memory of Florida State's 2022 win in Hard Rock Stadium is still fresh in Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal's mind. In his first year leading the program, he saw FSU put together a 45-3 win, the largest road victory in the history of the two schools. After pushing the Seminoles to the edge last year in an upset bid, making a statement is going to be on the forefront of his and Miami's mind. With No. 6 Miami boasting a 7-0 (3-0 ACC) record and a Heisman Trophy candidate in quarterback Cam Ward, it would be a tall task for Florida State in a normal year — in 2024, with FSU fielding one of the country's worst offenses as the defense still tries to acclimate, it'll be a major challenge avoiding a repeat of 2020's matchup, when Miami scored the most points in series history en route to a 42-point win of its own (52-10). What does Miami bring to the table outside of quarterback? On this week's Line of Scrimmage, we're joined by our friend Adam Lichtenstein of the Sun Sentinel to talk about the Hurricanes run this year, what they're fielding on each side of the ball and how he thinks the game will go on Saturday night.
