City Lights celebrates No.23 in the "Spotlight Poetry Series" Roberto Harrison reads from his work. Introduction by Garrett Caples. Julien Poirier will also be reading from his work. In person event held in City Lights' Poetry Room, hosted by Peter Maravelis. Purchase "Isthmus to Abya Yala" By Roberto Harrison here: https://citylights.com/isthmus-to-abya-yala-spotlight-23/ A conjuration of ancient consciousness aimed at rehumanizing our contemporary cyborg condition. “Abya Yala”–“land of life” or “land of vital blood”–is a Pre-Columbian term of the Guna people of Panamá and Colombia to refer to the American continent and more recently has signified the idea of a decolonized “New World” among various Indigenous movements. In Isthmus to Abya Yala, Panamanian American poet Roberto Harrison summons a mythic consciousness in response to this political and spiritual struggle. In his poems, with mystic fervor, Harrison finds phonetic unities concealing conceptual oppositions he must transcend. Invoking “mobilian” as an ur-language against racism and toward an all-inclusive humanity–in opposition to the “mobile” of phone-mediated existence–the poems of "Isthmus to Abya Yala" burn with a visionary ardor that overpowers rationality through an intensive accumulation of imagery. They even sometimes manifest as visual poems in the form of drawings he calls “Tecs,” opposing the dominance of technology to the advocacy of pan-Indian nationhood by 19th century Shawnee leader Tecumseh. “Tecumseh Republic” is the poet's name for a new post-racial, post-national, post-binary, post-colonial, holistic and earth-oriented society with no national borders, with Panamá, the isthmus, as its only entry and exit. Roberto Harrison's poetry books include "Tropical Lung: exi(s)t(s)" (Omnidawn, 2021), "Tropical Lung: Mitologia Panameña" (Nion Editions, 2020), "Yaviza" (Atelos, 2017), "Bridge of the World" (Litmus Press, 2017), "culebra" (Green Lantern Press, 2016), "bicycle" (Noemi Press, 2015), "Counter Daemons" (Litmus Press, 2006), "Os" (subpress, 2006), as well as many chapbooks. With Andrew Levy, Harrison edited the poetry journal "Crayon" from 1997 to 2008. He was also the editor of Bronze Skull Press which published over 20 chapbooks, including the work of many Midwestern poets. Most recently, Harrison served as a co-editor for the "Resist Much/Obey Little: Inaugural Poems to the Resistance" anthology. He was the Milwaukee Poet Laureate from 2017–2019 and is also a visual artist. He lives in Milwaukee with his wife, the poet Brenda Cárdenas. Julien Poirier teaches poetry in the San Francisco public schools and at San Quentin State Prison. His book "Out of Print" was published by City Lights in 2016. He is also the author of "El Golpe Chileño" (2010), "Stained Glass Windows of California" (2012), and "Way Too West" (2015), among other volumes. With Garrett Caples, he edited Incidents of "Travel in Poetry: New and Selected Poems" (2016) by Frank Lima for City Lights. He is also a co-founder of Ugly Duckling Presse Collective, where he edited a poetry newspaper, "New York Nights," as well as an anthology of writing by Jack Micheline, "One of a Kind" (Ugly Duckling, 2008), and a book of travel journals by Bill Berkson, "Invisible Oligarchs" (Ugly Duckling, 2016). He is currently the mastermind behind the mail art publication Night Mail. Originally broadcast on Wednesday, April 3, 2024. Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 60 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! Sometimes, when we do slightly odder fare on the show, we like to start recording a little later, have a few drinks and get a bit loose. We’ve done a few like that before (New York Nights, The Naked Detective, Tina and the Professor). Joined by drunkcasting hero Matt, from our sister podcasts Songs on Trial and Movie Melt, we decided to do it again this episode, because Peter Kay’s 1987 British sort-of-comedy breast-fetishising shot-on-video epic Miss-Adventures at Mega Boob Manor (aka Action Video Presents Mega Manor) is certainly one of the odder movies we’ve done. Something happened though, and the next thing we knew our other guest Tim had left and it was 7 and a half hours later, and we were unbelievably drunk. To top it off, then we had audio issues with the last half hour of the show, so we had to re-record that. The result is almost 4 hours of Get Soft, which is a ridiculous runtime for a podcast. It’s either our best episode or our worst - at this point we have no ability to know, but please give us a call and tell us. The Softcore Spotlight focuses on Stacey Owen, one of only three actors credited in the film. Owen was a Scottish model who’d recently won (or come second in, depends on the source) 1986 Miss Wet T-Shirt World Competition, and was in her first film with Miss-Adventures at Mega Boob Manor, and was on the verge of superstardom. Though she only modelled between 1986 (maybe 1985, depends on the source) and 1991, she’s still remembered very fondly by Brits and Scots of a certain age. We go through her story, aided by clips from the ‘documentary’ The Stacey Owen Story! Hey, why not call us on our hotline? (724) 246-4669! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 42 of our spin-off show about the weird world of softcore skin-flicks! Way back in episode 11, we did Ernest G. Sauer’s New York Nights, which we loved, because it was fun and sweet. So this time, 31 episodes later, we’re doing another of his films: The Naked Detective! Coincidentally, also way back in episode 11 we got absolutely tanked before recording. This again sort of repeated this episode, except it happened more as the episode went on, so that’s something. Anyway, the movie’s a satirical, sex-filled, detective romp, with a surprisingly well thought out mystery: the whole cast (which this time includes Matt from Compañeros and also Ash from For the Story) guessed the culprit prior to the big reveal, but still! As a bonus, Get Soft’s Official Favourite Actress of All Time Julia Parton is in it. She is just the best, isn’t she? Plus, we look at the life and times of one of the film’s other stars, the great Taylor St. Claire. She started in magazines and softcore films, then moved into hardcore, and now she films and sells short videos like Your Giant Inflated Escort and other super niche fetish targeting stuff. It’s probably crazy lucrative! Where else are you going to find content like This Was Not The Plan Ass Expansion, or Hourglass Juicy Filled Hourglass Giant Ass And A Leprechaun, or POV: If Your Cock Grows Big and Hard I Will Grow One For You? Nowhere, that's for dang sure! Hey, why not call us on our hotline? (724) 2GO-GO69 or (724) 246-4669!
Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 11 of our spin-off show about the weird world of softcore skin-flicks! This time around, we go studio-based again, with a late night session to fit in with our look at 1994's husband-hunting dramedy New York Nights, starring Marilyn Chambers, Susan Napoli and Julia Parton! There was a lot of drinking. One of the cast members on the show actually drank so much they had to go to bed after only half an hour. It was podcasting experiment that either did or did not work. We're really not sure at this stage. Plus, we take a very long look at the life and times of the one and only Julia Parton. She really is Dolly's cousin. Also she did a pretty crazy range of stuff, including foot fetish, bondage, and tickle fetish films! Apparently she's so ticklish she actually passed out on one set.
1st mix after 9/11/2001. A botched intro and heavy leaning on the delay f/x kept this one on ice for years. Recently, a friend told me that this, still, was one of his favorites.
