Sus interpretaciones de 'Hum Drum Blues' de Oscar Brown, Jr. y 11 estándares (incluyendo ' Falling in Love With Love ', ' Dat Dere ', ' Baltimore Oriole ' y ' I'm a Fool to Want You ') son a la vez vibrantes y evocadoras".

There's something of Missy Raines in every song she records or performs. Whether she wrote it herself or selected it from another songwriter, she's lived inside the story and the sound. And she wants you to experience it alongside her. Love & Trouble, Raines' latest album with her band Allegheny, offers views from the highest peaks of her native West Virginia and from the deepest hollers of heartbreak. The 10 songs come to life with people, places, and stories that have caught her heart during her five-decade journey in bluegrass and beyond.“Who I am,” Raines reflects, “is because of what I've been through, what I've seen and experienced, what I've loved, what I've been moved by.”As a kid, Raines often traveled with her family to festivals in Baltimore and Washington, D.C., the beating heart of bluegrass in the 1960s and 70s. She'd dabbled in piano and guitar, but when her father bought a bass for himself when she was 10, she picked it up and never let it go. (The same bass is still her primary instrument now.) She started performing as a young teenager, and since then she's played with some of the greats across several generations: Mac Wiseman, Kenny Baker, Eddie Adcock, Bobby Osborne, Alison Brown, Bill Evans, Laurie Lewis, and Claire Lynch, to name a few. In her 40s, she took on the mantle of bandleader, cementing her own legacy in the bluegrass world. In 1998, she became the first woman to win IBMA's Bass Player of the Year award, and she's won that title another nine times since, as well as IBMA awards for collaborative projects with a wide range of her bluegrass peers and a Grammy nomination for her 2018 album, Royal Traveller. Her stature and her sparkle made her a well-received host of the 2024 IBMA Bluegrass Music Awards show alongside fellow bassist John Cowan.Nearly all the songs on Love & Trouble are rooted in some moment along her path, in the people and places and feelings she wants to share with her audience for the kind of connection that lasts.“Yanceyville Jail” stems from one of Raines' earliest memories of bluegrass, or at least from the backstory behind it. It was the early 1970s, and she was a kid in the audience at the storied Camp Springs, North Carolina, bluegrass festival. When Jimmy Martin's set time rolled around, festival promoter Carlton Haney walked onstage and explained that Martin wasn't going to be performing that evening, though he'd rejoin the festivities the following day. “You're not going to hear Jimmy sing tonight,” Raines, in a near-perfect mimic of Haney's North Carolina drawl, recalls him explaining, “because Jimmy's gonna spend the night in the Yanceyville jail.” The way she's heard it, there was a backstage scuffle between Martin and Haney before the set. The ground was muddy and tempers were high, ripe conditions for a juicy bit of bluegrass lore. Decades later, Raines has committed the story to song, told from Martin's imagined perspective: “I've been in hard liquor and soft red clay / And I've been in some trouble here today / Roll and tumble tooth and nail / I ain't going to the Yanceyville jail.”

Episode 77: Steve Smith. The incredible, multi-faceted, Steve Smith was one of my favorite drummers growing up. His playing with Journey blew me mind, and the fact that he had a full-on jazz career alongside his rock success made him even more inspiring to me. Steve made Modern Drummer's Top 25 Drummers of All Time list and won the #1 All-Around Drummer Award five years in a row. His credits are stacked, from early gigs with Jean Luc-Ponty (alongside Allan Holdsworth), Focus, and Ronnie Montrose, to arena-filling hits with Journey, to leading his band Vital Information (for the past 4 decades). He's done sessions with Mariah Carey, Andrea Bocelli, Vasco Rossi, Zucchero, Savage Garden, Bryan Adams, and Zakir Hussain. On the jazz side, Steve has played with heavyweights like Steps Ahead, Tom Coster, Ahmad Jamal, Victor Wooten, Mike Stern, Randy Brecker, Frank Gambale, Stuart Hamm, Dweezil Zappa, Hiromi, and Bill Evans.Steve is one of the greatest to ever do it, and it was a total honor to have him on the show. Zev Feldman, a.k.a. the “Jazz Detective,” has turned his crate-digging passion into a career: He tracks down previously unreleased recordings and jumps through the necessary hoops to get them released, often in lavish packages for his label, Resonance Records. This past Record Store Day featured such Feldman finds as live albums from Bill Evans, Freddie Hubbard, Kenny Dorham and Charles Mingus plus a limited-edition double album of previously unreleased Patsy Cline performances, Imagine That: The Lost Recordings (1954-1963). Feldman also co-produced last year's incendiary Blue Note release from McToy Tyner and Joe Henderson, Forces of Nature: Live at Slugs. In this expansive conversation, Feldman tells his Jazz Detective origin story and describes how he finds these recordings (or vice versa), he gets specific about the importance of Record Store Day and these projects' tight margins, and he reveals his white whales. It starts simply. Two blocked jazz chords with I-V in the bass. And then the vocalist comes in:“Twenty-four hours can go so fast. You look around, the day has passed…”This is Leonard Bernstein's song “Some Other Time” with lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, written for the 1944 musical, On the Town. It's about three sailors on 24-hour leave in New York City who meet three women before leaving for war. Four characters perform this song (in the stage version), hoping to catch up some other time, but knowing they may never see each other again.I first heard this song a few weeks ago on Bill McGlaughlin's weeknight radio show, Exploring Music. We've been listening to this show for over 16 years—we have it on while we cook and eat dinner.A few weeks ago, he did a series called “Dona Nobis Pacem (Grant Us Peace).” Nestled in the middle of the Wednesday night program, he paired Bernstein's “Some Other Time” with jazz pianist Bill Evans' improvised solo piano recording, “Peace Piece.”I was captivated.I got up from the dinner table and went to the piano to find the two chords by ear, playing along gently with the recording.Today, I'm taking you behind the scenes of these two pieces of music—exploring how they're made, what they have in common, and how hearing them played back to back inspired a listening and improvisation project in my intermediate-level studio class last month. For show notes + a full transcript, click here.Resources Mentioned“Some Other Time” (Bernstein)Exploring Music with Bill McGlaughlin“Peace Piece” (Bill Evans)The Profound Impact of Peace Piece – Bill Evans Time Remembered Documentary Film“Flamenco Sketches” (Miles Davis)“It's Been a Long, Long Time” (Harry James)“Put on Your Sunday Clothes” (Wall-E)“It Only Takes a Moment” (Wall-E)Ep. 042 - What Does It Mean to Be a Teacher-Facilitator?Get a free 15-minute consult with meIf you enjoyed this episode, please leave a review in Apple Podcasts >>Find me on Instagram: @ashleydanyewWhenever you're ready, here are three ways we can work together:1️⃣ Need fresh teaching ideas? Disco Fever all the rage and how music is measured.Jerolyn Sue Adolph Evans, the Primary First Counselor, is in a bit of a pickle. Quentin Scott got poison ivy from picking blackberries, and she's clueless about what to do. Linda Talbot, Second Counselor, is also on the case. Quentin thought his mom was literally lost, and no one wants to go with Jerolyn because they're all swamped with work. Wendy and Larry Fitzgerald have such a lovely place. Quentin ended up sleeping at MawMaw's house. She misses Deron P. Scarabin and only has Rachel Guidry to hang out with. They even sang Rhinestone Cowboy a bit. Bill Evans mentioned that MawMaw said everyone missed church earlier, but now Uncle Bill says MawMaw didn't go to church. MawMaw is Quentin's Primary teacher. Sports banquet and Bill got something special and "Jerolyn hasn't matured yet." They gave all the coaches "Coach of the Year" plaques. Mikelson decided to go to Nashville and make $21K. Bill's dad retired and sold everything but one tractor. All his parents' bills paid and no debt so they should be fine. Jerolyn said she might be "fat" by the time Scarabins return. Jerolyn has to have a CB. Quentin is Steve Austin but now Evil Knievel and Jerolyn is Disco Lady. Helen on Mother's Day. Clarence sprained his ankle helping Larry move. Handful of "tomaters." Uncle Nicky gave some cucumbers. Many beans and squash is great. Eggplant and bell peppers everywhere. Clarence will start working on sewer line. Helen feels like Quentin wanting us to talk back on the tape. Helen is out of "draws." Loves to hear from Scarabins. Wendy's backyard is so pretty. Only bad part is rain piles up in one spot. MawMaw called to be Primary Teacher and Secretary. Accepted Teacher position but refused the Secretary position because she can't write. Go up and down the steps forty times a day but rarely sees neighbors. Twice she talked without recording. Clarence "hollering." They pay the bills for the Scarabins as they come in. Gail had to work so Helen is watching Brent Edward Portie. Larry had fallen down with baby (John Dirk). Baby was fine but Larry was banged up and bruised. Emmett Adolph giving well wishes. Yvonne got a CB radio and real proud of it, carrying on with Helen Mae. Drinking a cold beer after coming from the pumping station. Yvonne Adolph sends well wishes. Everyone giggling "trying to talk to the stupid thing." Bad weather. Yvonne is the Lollipop, the name Marilyn gave Annie Adolph Chapman. Janelle Adolph gets on and gives an update on shrimping and how Mrs. Lizzy is enjoying her new job. Said her doctor going to get on her about weight gain. Sally's been sick. E.J. and Sue looked at Marilyn's trailer and tired waiting on it. Carolyn and Kyle Bergeron. Carolyn cracks up over Marilyn's grocery experience. Said Gail is still sitting and Craig made a home run in baseball. Horace said they just made errors. Kyle gets on and says Mrs. Hernandez will write to Jason. Kyle's keeping bikes clean and can't wait for us to come home. Craig updates on baseball and how much fun he's having. Horace has flu. Wendy has moved in her trailer. Don't let D.D. get beat up by the rocks. Edna Adolph updates. Fresh peaches and going to visit Pam and baby. Everyone has CBs down there. She's Hunny Bunny and Ernest is Gingerbread Man. Carolyn is Bewitched and Yvonne is Lollipop. She almost bowled 200. Gail Portie, May 11. Spending night at Helen's with Brent. Eddie's horse had baby. Brent wants to talk but didn't know what to say. Wendy has such a nice trailer. Made Gail "plum sick." Only complaint is ugly green carpet. Brent talks about his horses. Ernest Adolph and Edna brought some delicious peaches. PawPaw soaking his foot and "sure looks bad." Tomatoes coming in. Brent says a few words. Someone mistakenly thought D.D. gone overseas on mission instead of working at copper mine. JoAnne Ragas Scarabin. May 13. Helen and Clarence finish tape with more talk on the trailer park.

Here is a “Sunny Song”, wherein the fleeting sunlight is a dappled reminder of the evanescence of existence. They're all gone now: Bill Evans (piano), Tony Bennett (vocals), Henry Mancini (Composer), and Johnny Mercer (Lyricist), but their beautiful creation lives on to remind us to gather our rosebuds while we may.Sadness, and gratitude run in equal measure throughout all of the song's manifestations. The title itself derives from an 1896 poem by Ernest Dowson, taken from the Roman poet, Horace, whose latin translates as:“The brief sum of life forbids us the hope of enduring long;” The film for which Mancini and Mercer furnished this deathless song, was so tragic in its portrayal of addiction, that, even as a 10 year old, I mourned for the hopelessness of Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick's doomed romance that should have produced nothing but happiness, but brought only sorrow. In the magician's hands of Bill Evans, the chordal melody seems to waft in the breeze, and Tony Bennett's voice, never more supple, interprets the wistfulness of unfulfilled longing with a seasoned perfection. The results: a collaborative triumph. Tony was quoted as saying that their recordings were “the most prestigious thing I ever did”. Quite a statement from the acknowledged master.

Producing a historical recording requires enormous patience, investigative powers like an investigative journalist. The journey is long, emotional, and exciting when the recordings are discovered, and the final package completed. This is what Zev Feldman does. He is the producer for and co-president of Resonance Records, a record label that releases archival recordings that are previously unissued. The Resonance catalogue includes John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Wes Montgomery, Freddie Hubbard, among many other legendary musicians. In this episode, Zev Feldman and I discuss his insights into his multifaceted career, how he got started in the music industry and his subsequent journey through various roles in sales, marketing, and ultimately producing rare jazz recordings. Feldman works with numerous other labels including Blue Note, Verve Label Group, Elemental Music as well as own his own labels, Jazz Detective and Deep Digs. Feldman spins many stories about his adventures in discovering music long forgotten. It's music that is not just good; it must be GREAT! Curating legacy music requires a sense of understanding about the elements of a dynamic recording, one that exceeds others in the quality of the performance, the importance of a certain date, and the historical aspect of the show or studio recording. Then there is the emotional involvement with the families of these jazz legends, many of whom become close friends, such as it has with the families of jazz guitar legend Wes Montgomery (Zev produced the first archival recording of Wes Montgomery for Resonance) and piano virtuoso Bill Evans as Feldman is just releasing his 13th archival recordings of Bill Evans. Then there is the importance of Record Store Day on April 12. Feldman highlights the significance of this little-known observed day in bringing these projects to life. This episode is rich with music, thanks to Zev Feldman and Resonance Records. There is more than 36 minutes of full tracks of music along with clips of recordings discussed. The playlist includes: Freddie Hubbard-On Fire, “True Colors-Breaking Point Closer” (13:32); Freddie Hubbard-trumpet, Bennie Maupin-tenor saxophone, Kenny Barron-piano, Herbie Lewis-bass, Freddie Waits-drums. Charles Mingus-Mingus in Argentina-The Buenos Aires Concerts, “Duke Ellington's Sound of Love” (9:32), Charles Mingus-bass, Ricky Ford tenor saxophone, Jack Walrath-trumpet, Robert Neloms -piano, and Dannie Richmond-drums. Kenny Dorham-Blue Bossa in the Bronx: Live from the Blue Morocco, “Blue Bossa”, (13:31), Kenny Dorham-trumpet, Sonny Red-alto sax, Cedar Walton-piano, Paul Chambers-bass and Denis Charles-drums. Short music clips: Charles Mingus-"Pork Pie Hat", Freddie Hubbard-"Crisis", Kenny Dorham-Blue Friday, Bill Evans-"Ro(u)nd Midnight". Thank you for listening to this podcast. Rick Welch sits down and has a deeply personal conversation with Andrea Robinette. Last year, Rick had heard a story about a husband and father who had perished in a house fire trying to save two of his sons, but tragically all three died. Bill Evans, the Truckdriver Theologian, called Rick and discussed this situation and introduced him to the wife and mother of this family, Andrea Robinette. After a few emails and phone conversations the schedule for her interview with the Burros of Berea was set, Thursday, September 26th 2024. On that day, planes were being delayed and cancelled due to heavy rains that stemmed from Hurricane Helene coming up from the Gulf of America (formerly Mexico). Andrea made the decision to drive down to our studio in Western North Carolina. While driving down, Rick and Andrea had a conversation about the flooding that had already begun and determined to cancel Thursday evening's recording to be safe and to talk to one another the following day and reschedule. Little did they know that Andrea was driving into the most catastrophic event in the history of Western North Carolina. This is one of the most powerful testimonies ever recorded on our show. Great interview this month with seven time National Fiddle Champion and creator of the FiddleStar site, Megan Lynch Chowning! Megan doesn't compete in fiddle contests anymore, or judge them, or go to them, so I was very curious to hear about why. We talk about fiddling in California, fiddle contests, fiddle camps, and different kinds of learning and relating to fiddle music. Megan filled me in on the just-released John Hartford Fiddle Project Volume 2 that she co-produced.Megan Lynch Chowning is a seven time national fiddle champion, touring musician, Grammy-nominated recording artist, teacher, singer, and flatfooter. She's toured with Pam Tillis and Lorrie Morgan, Dale Ann Bradley, Roland White, Larry Cordle, Jim Hurst, Chris Jones, 3 Fox Drive, Due West, Chris Stuart, and BEML (the duo of Bill Evans and Megan). Megan has released a series of entirely solo fiddle albums, focusing on crowdsourcing fabulous but slightly more obscure fiddle tunes. She has taught fiddle and vocals at prestigious camps such as Augusta Heritage Week, the British Columbia Bluegrass Workshop, Sore Fingers Bluegrass Week in the UK, Walker Creek Music Camp, and the California Bluegrass Association Camp, among many others. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for January 9, 2025 is: excursion ik-SKER-zhun noun Excursion refers to a trip, and especially to a short one made for pleasure. Excursion is also often used figuratively to refer to a deviation from a direct, definite, or proper course, and often in particular to a digression. // Some of Maya's most cherished childhood memories are of fishing excursions with her grandpa. // Lewis Carroll's Through The Looking Glass is an excursion into a fantastical world where nothing is what it seems to be, and everything appears to be what it is not. See the entry > Examples: “… in the late sixties, he [Miles Davis] abandoned acoustic jazz altogether, moving to the easy/uneasy blend of jazz and rock that would cause consternation among jazz purists and come to be known as fusion. Then, in 1975, plagued by profuse health problems and addictions, he left music altogether, not to return until 1981. Audiences and record buyers welcomed his comeback, though jazz's zealous gatekeepers continued to fret about his stylistic excursions and commercial aspirations.” — James Kaplan, 3 Shades of Blue: Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, and the Lost Empire of Cool, 2024 Did you know? A Tribe Called Quest's 1991 album The Low End Theory is not only widely regarded as one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time, but one of the genre's most successful early excursions into jazz, utilizing samples and even featuring legendary bassist Ron Carter on one song. Excursion refers to a usually brief, pleasurable trip, and is often used figuratively—as in the previous sentence—for metaphorical trips outside of one's usual territory, be they artistic or otherwise. The word comes from the Latin verb excurrere (“to run out” or “to extend”), which combines the prefix ex- meaning “out of” and the verb currere meaning “to run.” Although it is sometimes used to refer to attacks or raids made against an enemy, as in “military excursions,” excursion is mostly used today for much more enjoyable jaunts, junkets, and rambles. Accordingly, on your next excursion, whether to the park, beach, or elsewhere, you could do worse than to queue up The Low End Theory on your playlist. The album's first track, after all, is titled “Excursions.”
