As the 2026 Berlinale concluded its second week, I continued my series covering the film highlights. This time I sat down with Bilge Ebiri of Vulture and New York Magazine, who was making his first visit to this festival. Among the titles discussed were Moscas (aka Flies, directed by Fernando Eimbcke), Mouse (Kelly O'Sullivan and Alex Thompson), and Everybody Digs Bill Evans (Grant Gee). There is an inkling of a legend that one day scientists will perfect a regular orbit for the audio edition of Charlottesville Community Engagement. Or at least, in the current day and age, this podcast edition happens as a secondary or perhaps tertiary by-product of the creation of many stories. The optimal time for this to come is Monday morning but the mini Ice Age has taken its toll on normal routines. I'm Sean Tubbs, and I do hope you'll take a listen whenever you can.In this edition:* City Council took a look at national financial picture at recent retreat (read the story)* Charlottesville City Council briefed on FY27 budget; assessments up an average of 3.72 percent in 2026 (read the story)* Charlottesville's FY25 surplus totals $8.5 million (read the story)* The Charlottesville-Albemarle Regional Transit Authority meets for the first time in 2026 (read the story)* Albemarle County seeking changes to form-based code at Rio / 29 (read the story)* Council confirms willingness to let group build bridge to Vietnam memorial, accept the infrastructure (read the story)* City Manager Sanders goes through his work plan; Ashley Marshall leaving city government (read the story)First shout-out: Camp Albemarle!Today's subscriber-supported public service announcement goes out to Camp Albemarle, which has for over eighty years been a “wholesome rural, rustic and restful site for youth activities, church groups, civic events and occasional private programs.”Located on 14 acres on the banks of the Moorman's River near Free Union, Camp Albemarle continues as a legacy of being a Civilian Conservation Corps project that sought to promote the importance of rural activities. Rebuilt in the early 1980's, a legacy of 4-H programming thrives along with a wide range of additional activities. Educational initiatives from schools across the region spark environmental learning moments at every turn.Second shout-out: WTJU Folk Marathon running this weekWTJU's volunteer hosts are curating a Folk music mecca, running February 2 – 9, all to raise money for the non-commercial radio station as it continues to find its footing after federal funding cuts. Check out the schedule on the website here!Keep your dial set to 91.1 FM (or stream from their player) for a week of Folk sounds, including old-time, honky tonk, global music, roots, and mind-bending psych folk. There will be deep dives into the work of singular artists, including Brandi Carlile, John Prine, Jesse Welles, Martin Carthy, and many more. There will be tributes to some of the musicians we lost in 2025, including Raul Malo, Danny Thompson, Joe Ely, Michael Hurley, and Todd Snider. The Marathon will boast eight live concerts, open to the public, and broadcast on air, online, and on the WTJU YouTube channel. Stop by to see Mama Tried, Scuffletown, the Buzzard Hollow Boys, Red and the Romantics, Ramona and the Holy Smokes, and others! Every hour of the seven days and nights broadcasts directly from WTJU; even the overnight programming is populated with archived concerts from our very own stage! We have also invited some of our favorite local musicians in to present special programming, including Banjo Hall of Fame member Bill Evans, singer/songwriter extraordinaire Terri Allard, and band leader Waverly Minor. Where else but WTJU can you find such support from the community?End notes on #995-APeople who listen to the audio of this one may notice some interesting errors. More than usual, I'm popping my p's and otherwise hitting plosives. That's because something weird is happening with my recording set-up that I can't hear proper gain on my voice when I'm recording. If I can't hear them when I'm narrating a script, then they end up in the final mix because there's no choice.I'll figure it out, but I left it in for this one because this may have been one of the hardest audio editions to have done for a while. I barely took a breather in January and sometimes when I do too much work I don't process all of the stories properly. So yesterday I took off from writing new stories to get caught up with what I've already done. I usually do this work on Saturdays but I wanted to look at the General Assembly. This particular audio version also includes brand new interstitials. Those are the bits of sound in between the audio segments. One of the original ideas was that I would continue to make new ones but I've been using the same 20 stings over and over. So, today I made an effort to make new ones from existing weird things I've made over the years.Speaking of which, I've had an idea. In the coming weeks I'll be announcing a new way people can support my work, and that also involves changing the Patreon away from reporting and to something more artistic and creative. Probably not at all even close to the mainstream and it may not work, but I don't want to close the account. In any case, there may or may not be a regular newsletter today. I have to attend to the business of it all and this is a day where I may need to give myself over to that. Then again, maybe I won't. This is a public episode. Send a textThe Music Stopped on Valentine's Day, a full-length radio play, tells the story of Avi Noam Gross—my late husband—whose life ended due to a medical error. It weaves this painful narrative with his music, because I needed a way not only to tell what happened, but to honour Avi's extraordinary musicianship.Avi was a gifted composer and pianist. He completed his thesis on Bill Evans at the University of British Columbia, and his instrumental album Sophie's Heart is currently streaming. This piece features his standalone songs as well as music from our original musicals, The Calling Hour and Meshugeneh, the Musical. The Old Show had already been written, and we were on the verge of workshopping it when Avi received the Tdap vaccine and suffered a catastrophic reaction.I won't go further into the details here—you know the story does not end well. With The Music Stopped on Valentine's Day, I hope you will come to know what happened to an extraordinarily talented, humble, and deeply intelligent man—one who was often misunderstood because of his unique nervous system, which placed him on the autism spectrum. It will be three years this Valentine's Day that Avi passed. With any luck he's hanging out with Bill Evans. Hot Box 148 is going to be both sad and joyful since we now remember the extraordinary drummer Jack DeJohnette who died at the end of October aged 83. He was a native of Chicago and certainly could lay a claim to being the greatest of all jazz drummers. Immensely influential in the overall direction of drumming in jazz and, by any standards, extraordinarily versatile. You only have to rattle off the names of the musicians he worked with to emphasise that point, take Miles Davis for example, then Bill Evans, John Surman, Keith Jarrett and Pat Matheney, really ticking most of the boxes in the post-bop era. So, let's listen to some of that music while we pay tribute to an extraordinary musician.
Bill Evans, Scott LaFaro, Paul Motian. For this episode we're joined by Sonic Youth legend Thurston Moore to discuss his new book Now Jazz Now: 100 Essential Free Jazz and Improvisation Recordings, 1960-80. We start by recapping on the story our guest told in his acclaimed 2023 memoir Sonic Life. In the course of the conversation about his early musical life in Florida and Connecticut we hear a clip from Steve Roeser's 1994 audio interview with him. Discussion of early influences such as the Stooges takes us back to Thurston's stint in the late J.D. King's New York band the Coachmen – and then on to Sonic Youth itself. Our guest's friendship with neo-gonzoid scribe Byron Coley – a brilliant guest on our podcast last summer – takes us up to the present and the publication of Now Jazz Now. A general conversation on the subjects of "free jazz" and "improv" ensues, taking in clips from Thurston's pal David Toop's 1995 audio interview with the late Derek Bailey. After Mark has quoted from newly-added library pieces about Bill Evans (1972) and OMD (1984), Jasper talks us out with his thoughts on James Brown's 1994 loaded encounter with the Beastie Boys. Many thanks to special guest Thurston Moore. Now Jazz Now is published by Ecstatic Peace Library and available from ecstaticpeace.net/now-jazz-now. Pieces discussed: Sonic Youth, Sonic Youth And the Blast First Axis, Derek Bailey audio, Cecil Taylor: Ladies and gentlemen, please adjust your re-entry goggles, David Toop: Gorilla Noises & Mains Hum, Bill Evans: Living Time With Evans, Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark: OMD and The Beastie Boys: Still Ill.
Hermine Duerloo, Laurent Maur and Alexandre Piret join me on episode 150, for a retrospective on the great Toots Thielemans. Toots was born in 1922 to humble beginnings, in Brussels, Belgium, where his parents ran a cafe. His first instrument was an accordion, which he started playing at age three and showed great promise. He took up guitar and the chromatic harmonica around the age of sixteen. He then went on to tour Europe with Benny Goodman in 1950 before moving to the US in 1951 where landed a seat in the George Shearing Quintet, mainly as a guitar player, but also playing some songs on chromatic. Toots made his first solo albums from the late 1950s, including the iconic Man Bites Harmonica. From the 1960s Toots was in great demand as a session musician, recording with many giants of the music industry, such as Bill Evans, Paul Simon and Billy Joel. He also made some notable musical collaborations, including with Jaco Pastorius and Quincy Jones, and recorded on numerous film and tv scores, such as Midnight Cowboy and Sesame Street. Toots had such a long and glorious career that it's hard to do it justice, but this episode attempts to highlight some of the key moments from the undisputed giant of the chromatic harmonica, and one who has inspired pretty much every chromatic player that has followed. This week on “Talk About Las Vegas With Ira”, Ira welcomes world-renowned vibraphonist and drummer Chuck Redd, bringing his acclaimed holiday show, “A Redd Christmas,” to Vic's Las Vegas December 12-13. Chuck shares remarkable stories from a life surrounded by jazz legends—including the great Red Norvo, who once had dinner at Chuck's home and even gave him a private lesson. He reflects on his musical relationship with Barney Kessel, and the unforgettable lesson that who you are as a person is directly mirrored in your music. Chuck also talks about the influence of Milt Jackson, his work with Monty Alexander, Shelly Manne, Buddy Rich, and Bill Evans, and why he finds inspiration from younger musicians. Other highlights include traveling secrets picked up over decades on the road, his daily practice rituals, and insights into why most jazz musicians remain grounded and humble—even amidst remarkable careers. Chuck also explains why part of being a great musician is being personable, thoughtful and always considering the audience—without pan-dering. Plus, Chuck tells us why “A Redd Christmas” at Vic's has become a beloved Las Vegas tradition, what audiences can expect (from holiday classics to mainstream jazz, blues, be-bop, and bossa nova), details of his brand-new Christmas album, featuring his brother Robert on piano, and the making of his original title track. He also talks about what makes performing in Las Vegas uniquely meaningful—because the city reflects the history of American entertainment, including echoes of Frank Sinatra. This week and next week's episodes of the podcast will shine a spotlight on a few of the featured titles from the Black Friday List, which is up now at RecordStoreDay.com. This week, we welcome back "The Jazz Detective," Zev Feldman, and while of course he brought along some super cool jazz titles from Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Bill Evans, and Yusef Lateef, he's also branching out into blues with B.B. King, and even D.C. hardcore punk, with a historically charged release from Bad Brains. Honestly, we could listen to Zev talk about his projects for days. And we'll play a sad train song for "Folk Hero" Todd Snider who passed away on November 14th. The Record Store Day Podcast is a weekly music chat show written, produced, engineered, and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme music and selected interstitial music. Executive Producers (for Record Store Day) Michael Kurtz and Carrie Colliton. In fall 2023, three veteran jazz journalists, Bill Milkowski, Rick Mitchell, and Howard Mandel, sat down for a wide-ranging conversation, a portion of which is collected here to remind us all why we fell in love with music in the first place. From first album purchases to legendary festival moments, they share the records and live performances that impacted them. Whether it's Howard's early attraction to Bill Evans, Rick's reverence for Jimi Hendrix, or Bill's memories of Blind Faith, these are the musical origin stories behind three respected voices in jazz journalism. This episode captures what happens when writers stop analyzing and start remembering. It is all about the the music that made them who they are, and why. Yes, it's still all about the music.Check out our playlist of the music mentioned and excerpted in this episode. And here are the two episodes making up the discussion this episode is excerpted from:Part I: Jazz Journalism, Then and Now, with Veteran Writer Bill Milkowski and host Rick MitchellPart II: Bill Milkowski with Rick Mitchell and Howard Mandel, reminiscingTake a look at the Jazz Omnibus, the 600-page anthology of 21st century photos and writings by members of the Jazz Journalist Association, available online and wherever books are soldDon't miss new episodes of The Buzz. On October 26, 2025, the legendary jazz drummer Jack DeJohnette passed away at the age of 83. DeJohnette was one of the greatest drummers in modern jazz. He released more than 50 albums as a bandleader and appeared on hundreds of recordings as a sideman — including landmark sessions such as Miles Davis' “Bitches Brew”, Wayne Shorter's “Super Nova”, and Keith Jarrett's “Standards”, among many others. DeJohnette also recorded six classic albums with Naptown jazz icon Freddie Hubbard. This week on Echoes of Indiana Avenue, we'll share music highlighting Freddie Hubbard's collaborations with Jack DeJohnette. Born in Chicago in 1942, DeJohnette began his musical journey studying classical piano before switching to drums — a duality that shaped his melodic sensibility behind the kit. He rose to prominence in the 1960s through his work with jazz luminaries including Charles Lloyd, Chick Corea, Bill Evans, and Miles Davis. During his six-decade career, DeJohnette led numerous ensembles and recorded prolifically, creating a distinctive sound that fused jazz traditions with abstract and avant-garde influences. A National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master and Grammy Award winner, DeJohnette was a guiding force in the evolution of modern jazz.

Pianist/composer Bill Evans (born August 16, 1929) remains one of the most influential jazz pianists to this day, some 45 years after his death. His introspective, impressionistic use of harmony, and his unique touch and piano sound have shaped the concept of all players who have come after him. He produced an enormous body of work: over 50 albums as a leader and nearly as many more as a sideman, and he was nominated for 31 Grammys.

Episode 77: Steve Smith. The incredible, multi-faceted, Steve Smith was one of my favorite drummers growing up. His playing with Journey blew me mind, and the fact that he had a full-on jazz career alongside his rock success made him even more inspiring to me. Steve made Modern Drummer's Top 25 Drummers of All Time list and won the #1 All-Around Drummer Award five years in a row. His credits are stacked, from early gigs with Jean Luc-Ponty (alongside Allan Holdsworth), Focus, and Ronnie Montrose, to arena-filling hits with Journey, to leading his band Vital Information (for the past 4 decades). He's done sessions with Mariah Carey, Andrea Bocelli, Vasco Rossi, Zucchero, Savage Garden, Bryan Adams, and Zakir Hussain. On the jazz side, Steve has played with heavyweights like Steps Ahead, Tom Coster, Ahmad Jamal, Victor Wooten, Mike Stern, Randy Brecker, Frank Gambale, Stuart Hamm, Dweezil Zappa, Hiromi, and Bill Evans.Steve is one of the greatest to ever do it, and it was a total honor to have him on the show.
