In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Jenny Demark, Conrad Leung, and Dr. Linda Reinstein to talk about their new book, Complex Kids, Simple Solutions: How to Raise Resilient, Confident, Likable Kids. These are clinicians who've spent years working directly with families dealing with everything from emotion regulation challenges, to childhood anxiety, to severe behavioral challenges, and what I liked about this conversation is that it stayed extremely practical throughout. We spent a lot of time talking about their "Prepare, Teach, Motivate" framework, and how parents and professionals can think more systematically about helping kids build resilience and coping skills rather than just reacting to challenging behavior in the moment. "Silent Friend" is a 2025 historical drama film written and directed by Ildikó Enyedi, starring Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Léa Seydoux, Luna Wedler, Sylvester Groth, and Martin Wuttke. It follows a single ginkgo tree through three loosely connected stories spanning different eras: 1908, 1972, and 2020, set in the old university town of Marburg, Germany. The film had its world premiere in the main competition of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, where it won the FIPRESCI Prize and the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Wedler. Their research covers a range of parasite-related topics including macroecological patterns of parasitism, parasite community composition, parasite-host interactions, and disease ecology. Haiti Arrests Suspects in Fatal Stampede Authorities in Haiti have arrested seven suspects, including five police officers, after a fatal stampede (獸群或人群因恐懼引發的奔逃) killed at least 25 people at a historic mountaintop fortress over the weekend. A police statement issued on Monday says that among the arrested are two employees of Haiti's Institute for the Preservation of National Heritage. The institute oversees La Citadelle, a fortress in the northern town of Milot built in the early 1800s where Saturday's stampede occurred. Dozens of people were injured, with 30 reported to still be in hospital on Sunday. It's not clear what caused the stampede. Authorities say the investigation is ongoing. Colombia to Cull Wild Hippos Colombian officials have authorized a controversial plan to cull (限量捕殺) dozens of wild hippos that are descendants of animals brought to the country in the 1980s by notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar. They have been roaming freely around one of the country's most fertile areas, threatening villagers and displacing local species. The animals are not native to South America. Escobar brought in hippos as he built a private zoo at a gigantic ranch that served as his rural abode. Colombia's authorities say previous attempts to control the hippos' population have been expensive and unsuccessful. We love how it celebrates the unique bond between immigrant parents and their children. Julie Leung has a long history of writing picture book biographies that include The Truth About Dragons (a 2024 Caldecott Honor book and winner of the Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature), Paper Son: The Inspiring Story of Tyrus Wong, Immigrant and Artist (winner of the 2021 American Library Associations Asian/Pacific American Award for Best Picture Book), A Banquet for Cecilia, Mr. Pei's Perfect Shapes: The Story of Architect I. Retired agent Steve Conley reviews his investigation of the 18-year period in which Katrina Leung, one of the Bureau's highest-paid assets, was operated by former FBI Supervisory Special Agent (SSA) James J. Smith, known as JJ. Katrina Leung's code name was Parlor Maid. Steve's investigation determined that during the time Smith was Leung's handler, not only was she actively spying for the People's Republic of China against the United States, but they were involved in a sexual relationship.
