It's a curious thing, sometimes you want to get away from something. Maybe it's the town you grew up in, or a family business. You think you know it, and are not interested. But circumstances change and find your way back to it with new eyes.In this conversation with Thomas Leung, we trace the arc of a family deeply rooted in Chinese herbal medicine. From his great-grandfather's shop in Guangdong, to navigating the upheaval of the Chinese revolution, to adapting a Manhattan herb store to changing demographics, Thomas brings both a practitioner's and a business owner's sensibility to the conversation.Listen in as we talk about the evolution of Chinese medicine in America, what it means to modernize without losing tradition, the challenge of standardizing herbal language, and the precarious state of our profession in this current moment. This conversation is about more than herbs. It's about responsibility, reinvention, and how the future of our medicine depends not only on practice—but on stewardship.

This episode is released to mark the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace 2025. We invited Marie Hürlimann, Co-Director, and Raphaëlle Leung, Head of Communications of Foraus, a Swiss participatory think tank for young thinkers who want to shape tomorrow's foreign policy, to talk about the latest Foraus publication that they co-edited with Maximillian Rau: GenSouth - New voices from the Global South for the multilateral system of the future. GenSouth is a programme designed to bring together academics and think tank researchers from the Global South, aged between 25 and 35, to engage in discussions about the multilateralism of the future and to develop actionable, ambitious recommendations. Marie and Raphaëlle talk with Francesco Pisano, Director of the UN Library & Archives in Geneva, about the GenSouth project. They reveal to us four visions of possible futures of multilateralism elaborated in the report. GenSouth sees a world built on collective responsibility where the international community does not stand by in the violation of IHL; a reimagined South-South cooperation prioritising resilience, sustainability, and sovereignty; a transformation of the global financial architecture to empower vulnerable communities' access to climate finance; and Security Council reform for the inclusion of global south and the future of peace. Her writing can be found in The Baffler, Cream City Review, Gulf Coast, The Collagist, and the Fairy Tale Review, among others. Her first book of poetry, Bone Confetti, won the 2015 Noemi Press Book Award. Of it, one reviewer said, “It made the words into a bell, and the bell made me stop what I was doing.” I spoke to Muriel in 2021 about her poetry collection, Imagine Us, the Swarm, in which she explored racialized labor and the death of her father. In this episode, I talk to Muriel about her debut novel, How to Fall in Love in a Time of Unnameable Disaster, which came out this past October. It follows Mira, a 20-something queer woman living in a New York City beset by weekly acid rainstorms, as she moves in with her mother and grieves the death of her girlfriend, who refused to leave the deteriorating apartment they both shared.

Stuart Leung had occupied the CFO office at Flexport for only a few months when he realized the supply chain management company's growing margin pressures stemmed not from a single root cause but from many. From pricing misalignment to invoice errors, Leung had compiled a lengthy list of snags. Along the way, he began empowering the people closest to each issue to drive the necessary improvements. By implementing more than 15 “big rock” initiatives—tracked through monthly reviews—Flexport rapidly identified, tested, and refined solutions. This cross-functional, data-centric effort not only began restoring margins but also created a replicable model of continuous improvement. That turnaround effort, Leung tells us, echoed lessons he learned earlier in his career. As a young analyst at an investment bank, he quickly discovered how fundamental analysis and modeling could uncover hidden risks. Later, private equity taught him the vital link between operational decisions and financial outcomes—a perspective he solidified while leading finance and supply chain for a small consumer brand. When he encountered Flexport as a paying customer, its tech platform so thoroughly simplified his logistics challenges that he became a believer in its end-to-end visibility.

This queer Asian meta stoner coming-of-age dramedy takes storytelling to a whole new level—it’s a movie about two guys making a movie about two guys making a movie. Yes, it’s as wonderfully chaotic as it sounds. Extremely Unique Dynamic has been making waves, playing at over 25 film festivals and breaking box office records during its LA theatrical run. In this episode, Harrison and Ivan share the wild journey of creating a deeply personal, yet entirely universal story that subverts stoner comedy tropes while addressing themes of representation, identity, and authenticity. We dive into everything—how they infused the film with their real-life personalities, their unexpected success at festivals, and even a bit of party bus pole-dancing backstory. Along the way, we also discuss pop-punk soundtracks, karaoke go-tos, and what they hope this movie will mean 50 years from now. Plus, we get into some lighter moments, including their favorite reality TV shows, nostalgic movie picks, and the unexpected challenges of doing Q&As. Scope expansion is a hot topic in main areas of the medical world. When one profession gains the rights to provide certain types of care, it often means they are encroaching on another profession's territory. But that expansion can often benefit thousands (if not millions) of patients. So, not surprisingly, there are often heated battles for these contested territories. And many questions arise...Which profession should be allowed to do which procedures? How do we improve access to care for patients in rural locations? Are some professions acting as gatekeepers? To help us better understand the importance of scope expansion in the optometry world, we will have a two part discussion with 4 different subject matter experts: Dr. Shaina Nensi (President of the Ontario Association of Optometrists), Dr. Sophia Leung (President of the Alberta Association of Optometrists), Dr. Evelyn Lo (President of the BC Doctors of Optometry), and Dr. Sarah MacIver (Clinical Professor at the University of Waterloo). This episode is the first of this two part series with Dr. Nensi and Dr. Leung.I hope you enjoy this very important conversation and I encourage you to share your thoughts!Love the show?
