Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 101 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world's number one podcast on that subject! It's a Compañeros Radio Network spectacular, as Heather, Matt and the Cookiem'n himself, David, join us to look at 1977's Young Lady Chatterley! The All New, All Different Lady Chatterley inherits a mansion, its staff, and a diary, in which she reads all about the Original Lady Chatterley's adventures with her gardener. So she decides to sexually harass her own staff. Honestly it's kind of weird and uncomfortable, but also kind of weird and fun. Oh, and for some reason it's got the third food sex scene we've done in three episodes. Please let us know if you've cursed us or can remove curses. Alan Roberts, the director (and co-producer and cinematographer) on this one is far from a household name, unless you're a Corey Feldman completist, or really into Lady Chatterley adaptations (or you're really familiar with who edited 2003's Grand Theft Parsons). Suffice to say, though, his story takes a few twists and turns and goes from ‘working on Burt Convey's Racquet' weird, to ‘causing international protests' weird quicker than you'd think. A super crazy Softcore Spotlight this episode! Please support our Patreon, if you can! Hey, why not call us on our hotline? (724) 246-4669! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 100 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world's number one podcast on that subject! Episode 100?! Who knew, four years ago, a plucky little softcore show would climb its way up the charts and into people's hearts to become the number one podcast on that subject? Granted, it's basically the same show as back then, but oh what times we've had. To celebrate, Compañeros Radio Network's own Heather and Matt join in on a film about filmmaking: 1974's Alice Goodbody! It's somehow enormously disturbing and wonderfully charming - oh, just like Get Soft! - and most of that charm is down to one very perfect piece of casting in the title role. Also somehow this is the second film in a row we've done with a really horrifying food sex scene, which is maybe a sign of some kind? Hard to say. Anyway, the perfect casting is the always lovely Sharon Kelly, aka Colleen Brennan, and there's no one we'd rather talk about on episode 100's Softcore Spotlight. She did it all: hardcore, softcore, exploitation, sexploitation, called Russ Meyer a “rude, grumpy misogynist” (harsh but fair), and was rarely anything less than an absolute delight to watch. Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 99 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world's number one podcast on that subject! Somehow we're already at episode 99, and for this one we've gone back to Italy, for another weirdo sex comedy: Bruno Mattei's 1990 film Three for One, aka Tre pesci, una gatta nel letto che scotta. Please keep that in mind because somehow we manage not to introduce the film by name until like 65 minutes in. It was recommended by our bud Erin, so it only seemed right to have her join us, along with Compañeros Radio Network's own Matt and Heather. The Italian films we've done in the past have gone mostly if not completely off the rails at some stage in the movie, and this one is no exception. We simply had to spoil the end for this one, because it puts everything before it into context. But does it do enough to pull all the threads together? Listen and find out! Plus, the life and career of director Bruno Mattei himself, a rip-off artist par excellence. You name it, he ripped it off, and he did it with style and heart. Less often with money, but that's filmmaking. Please support our Patreon, if you can! Hey, why not call us on our hotline? (724) 246-4669! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 98 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! Oh hey, we’re back! We took a little hiatus to move, but it started earlier and finished later than expected. But Get Soft is 100% back, with the episode we’d planned to do in February when Julie Strain’s passing was a little more recent. Still, it’s never a bad time to pay tribute to the Eternal Queen of ‘90s Softcore, and what better film to do that with than John Quinn’s 2001 feature Sex Court: The Movie! And what better guest to have join us than Compañeros Radio Networks’ very own Heather! Sex Court: The Movie is a movie, based on the TV show Sex Court. There are some pretty awful moments, and there are some great moments. We’ve missed this. And of course, we talk about the late, great Julie Strain. There really wasn’t anyone else quite like her - a true treasure. Please support our Patreon, if you can! Hey, why not call us on our hotline? (724) 246-4669! Dr. Snuggles and friends check out John Travers' 1994 erotic thriller Deep Down, and talk about star, the late, great Tanya Roberts! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 97 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! The world lost the great Tanya Roberts just a month ago, and...listen, she may not have actually liked being in erotic thrillers much, as far as we can tell, but she did rather a number them and she was rarely less than mesmerising. One such erotic thriller is the only directorial feature effort by John Travers: 1994’s Deep Down. Roberts plays the wife of a jealous man who is involved in at least moderately organised crime, but what happens when she falls for the young, fresh faced country boy who moves into their apartment complex? Also, the jealous husband is played by George Segal, which is honestly very distracting. George Segal! But of course, this episode is all about celebrating Tanya’s life and career. Long time listeners may remember we have already done this in episode 32 - we did it again, because as Pauline Kael once said of Roberts: “she’s a walking, talking icon, and she’s fun to watch”. RIP Tanya! Thanks for the fun times! Please support our Patreon, if you can! Hey, why not call us on our hotline? (724) 246-4669! Dr. Snuggles and friends - including sister podcast Ball Busters co-host Carlo - check out Don F. Glut's 2006 erotic horror comedy The Mummy's Kiss: 2nd Dynasty, and talk about star Stacy Burke! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 96 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! It’s Don F. Glut time once again, so we’re once again joined by our good friend Texas Mike. And boy, isn’t this series really flying by! 2006’s The Mummy’s Kiss: 2nd Dynasty is the fourth and penultimate film in the series. The evil mummy Hor Shep Sut is revived for the second time in as many years, but this time her rampage is controlled by a professor whose desire for eternal youth has deadly...learning outcomes? Something like that. Once again, it’s divisive. The subject of our softcore spotlight could not be less divisive, however! We talk about the life and career of the wonderful Stacy Burke. She only did a couple of softcore films, but she’s a prolific fetish model, and former Hefner girlfriend. More importantly for us: she’s a prolific YouTuber, with hundreds of lengthy videos in which she talks about her life past and present, her ambitions, her weekly shopping trips, and is just generally wonderful. Dr. Snuggles and friends - including sister podcast Ball Busters co-host Carlo - check out Robert Angelo's 1999 erotic thriller Forbidden Sins, and talk about writer Daryl 'Duke' Haney! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 95 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! What better way to follow up Forbidden Games than with a little Forbidden Sins? We’re joined by Carlo, from sister podcast Ball Busters, to talk about the 1999 Robert Angelo erotic thriller. It’s...divisive, but it’s a fairly tightly plotted affair (although opinions on the show vary as to how well it pulls everything together). The good news is it’s got a pretty good cast, headlined by the queen of erotic thrillers herself, the one and only Shannon Tweed. She’s as brilliant as ever. Plus, in Drew news, it turns out he was growing his hair long up until a couple of weeks ago for a tremendous Halloween prank! Did he pull it off? Listen to find out! This film is one of a handful of softcore/erotic thriller efforts from the great Daryl ‘Duke’ Haney, so naturally we talk his life and career. You may know Haney as a regular actor in Corman films in the ‘80s and ‘90s, but you definitely know his writing from Friday the 13th Part VII. Suffice to say that’s not exactly his favourite work (and nor is this film, no doubt). Please support our Patreon, if you can! Hey, why not call us on our hotline? (724) 246-4669! PATREON EPISODE - https://www.patreon.com/posts/in-search-of-2-5-45748664 In which Matt and Alistair explore the significantly strange world of podcasts, and look for the wheat amongst the chaff, and then try to learn from other podcasters' successes (and/or failures). In the fifth episode of our fantastic second season we're once again joined by Heather. Last time we took the high and holy road with Christian improv, but this time we go for a little solo comedy, with the Biker Chick Tit Gang Podcast, a show hosted by a guy called Maurice. "Laughs, true stories, current topics" is what he promises, and honestly he hits all three of those, even managing to talk movies too. Bonus: he has occasionally puzzling taste in women. What will this episode's little industrial espionage jaunt mean for Movie Melt, Songs on Trial, Get Soft with Dr Snuggles, Heavy Leather Horror Show, and Ballbusters?
Dr. Snuggles and friends - including MAG alumni and current Heavy Leather Horror Show cast member Squeaky Dave - check out Ed Holzman's 1995 erotic thriller Forbidden Games, and talk about star Jeff Griggs! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 94 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! Turns out there’s a whole lot of erotic thrillers with the word ‘forbidden’ in the title, and somehow we’ve never done any of them. Time to correct that omission by checking out Edward Holzman’s 1995 murder mystery Forbidden Games! We’ve previously seen Ed’s work in Pamela Principle 2, and he’s really got quite the cast with him this time: future soap opera veterans Jeff Griggs and Lesli Kay, future WWE wrestler Amy Weber, the late great Beckie Mullen, and the incomparable Gail Thackray. Gail’s accent veers from southern to British and even a little Australian, as the plot veers from outrageous BDSM murders to gentle horse rides through the Californian countryside to the burden of psychometry. The rest of the plot is a little on the confusing side, even for a movie expert like our guest: Squeaky Dave from Compañeros sister show Heavy Leather Horror Show! Plus, we talk the life and career of the film’s star, Jeff Griggs! Now a silver fox, Griggs ticks a lot of the Get Soft mainstay boxes - not just in terms of soap opera fame, but also appearances in Power Rangers, and 24! He’s more recently been in Bosch, which it turns out Drew Buzzy recommends. Please support our Patreon, if you can! Hey, why not call us on our hotline? (724) 246-4669! Dr. Snuggles and friends - including comedian Fifi Dosch from Fifi Quest podcast - check out Joseph W. Sarno's 1970 or '71 bananas coming of age drama The Seduction of Inga, and talk about composers Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 93 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! It’s back to Joe Sarno’s brilliantly odd Inga series, with the second and final part in her story: The Seduction of Inga! We’re faced with the prospect of talking about it without the great and terrible Drew Buzzy, but luckily incomparable comedian and podcaster Fifi Dosch steps up to the plate. It’s a surprising movie, to say the least. There’s unexpected insert shots during the sex scenes, featuring bad wigs and unanticipated graphic positions, camera angles and acts. There’s also, out of nowhere, an incest subplot. Thanks, 1970s! Luckily there’s also cute musician boys, goofy late teenage angst, lesbian bottle smashing and some incredible Swedish pop. And who else would be responsible for this pop music (which includes all time classic She's My Kind of Girl)? It’s Sweden in 1970 after all, so of course it’s a pre-ABBA Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, and of course they’re the focus of our spotlight this episode. Get ready for hidden pop gems, ‘80s musical weirdness with Chess, Swedish acoustic folk, and naturally, lawsuits against The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu. Please support our Patreon, if you can! Dr. Snuggles and friends - including guest Clare from Screaming Celluloid podcast - check out Don F. Glut's 2004 erotic horror Countess Dracula's Orgy of Blood, and talk about star Paul Naschy! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 92 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! Various world events and viruses stopped us from doing Inga II as planned - it’s coming up next time! - so we’re back to the films of the great Don F. Glut! Texas Mike is here as always with our series projects, and we’re also joined by the very wonderful Clare of Screaming Celluloid podcast and also various delightful meme pages fame. This time, we’re back to vampires once again, with 2004’s Countess Dracula’s Orgy of Blood! Whoa, hope the film can live up to that title! Two vampire siblings war for the love of a mortal woman in 2004 LA, irritating the other vampires with the trail of destruction and murder they leave behind. Bonus: the movie also features original goth metal, goth rock, and goth folk music. The most notable thing about this film is the fact that it’s one of just two American films to star late Spanish horror legend Paul Naschy! We can’t pass up the opportunity to talk about the life and career of the Man Who Saw Frankenstein Cry, as well as discussing the truthiness of some of Naschy’s various anecdotes. He loved to tell a story. Sure, some of them probably weren’t true, but he told them well nonetheless. Please support our Patreon, if you can! Hey, why not call us on our hotline? (724) 246-4669! Dr. Snuggles and friends - including guest Tim - check out Joe Sarno's 1968 black and white erotic melodrama Inga, and talk about star Marie Liljedahl! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 91 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! We have looked at films from a number of different countries, but one place we haven’t been is Sweden! So, off we trot to the land of the midnight sun, to have a look at Joe Sarno’s 1968 erotic melodrama Inga! It is really something. Almost every single character in the film is a total jerk, which is rare. But can this black and white slice of ‘60s Swedish (slash American) weirdness charm the cast? Also, we recorded this one on AFL Grand Final day, which is a thing the Australians care about, including bonus Australian Tim. Many football team songs are played. There is also a tangent into perhaps the most regional reference ever on the show, as the Australians introduce Drew to Melbourne furniture salesman Franco Cozzo’s delightful ads. Plus, we talk the life and brief career of the legendary and titular star of Inga, Marie Liljedahl! Liljedahl was only in 10 films in 3 and a bit years, but is still one of the most fondly remembered actors of this era of Swedish film. Please support our Patreon, if you can! Dr. Snuggles and friends - including guest Texas Mike - check out Donald F. Glut's 2003 erotic horror rom-com The Mummy's Kiss, and talk about star Katie Lohmann! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 90 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! A few episodes ago, we started our latest big project: the vampire and mummy movies of Donald F. Glut! This time, we take a look at the second in the series, and the first mummy film, The Mummy’s Kiss! An evil Egyptian sorceress returns from the dead in modern day (well, 2003) L.A., and searches for the reincarnation of her long lost love. It’s a whole thing. Richard Lynch is there, and so is the great Mia Zottoli, and the vastly underrated Sasha Peralto (who can’t act but has very adorable cheeks). Don sure did it with The Erotic Rites of Countess Dracula, but what will happen when he takes on Egypt? Plus, the life and career of Katie Lohmann, who shows up in the movie as the goddess Isis. Lohmann appeared in Playboy as Miss April 2001, and showed up on countless magazine covers, and also had (small) roles in some pretty big movies, like A.I., and...uh, The Hot Chick? Dr. Snuggles and friends - including guest Bobby from the Grindbin podcast - check out Byron Werner's 2000 erotic thriller Starstruck, and talk about star Amber Lee Smith! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 89 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! Byron Werner’s 2000 erotic thriller Starstruck (aka Deception, aka Deadly Affair, aka Other People’s Secrets) is far from the biggest name movie we’ve done on the show, but it sure is one of the most...surprising? Astonishing? Inaudible? Different members of the cast have very different ideas on that one, including our good bud Bobby from the Grindbin podcast! It’s a movie about movie making - specifically about softcore action movie making! Of course, being an erotic thriller, it’s also about both murder and sex, and the twist at the end will leave you speechless. Maybe. It left some of the cast speechless, anyway. Plus, we talk about the life and career of the star of the film, Amber Lee Smith, red-headed superstar model of the ‘90s and actor in some quite surprising films. Or, perhaps you know her from Celebrity Rehab? The good news is, she’s cleaned up. The bad news is she found both Jesus and conservative politics along the way. Also, Drew is hammered on this episode, so enjoy that! Please support our Patreon, if you can! Hey, why not call us on our hotline? (724) 246-4669! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 88 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! We’ve been watching Zalman King films chronologically for the whole time we’ve been doing this podcast, and anyone who knows Zalman King knows there’s one big film that has to be talked about: the most Zalman King film of all Zalman King’s films. A movie in which King gets to once again show an upper class woman in a steamy affair with a blue collar worker, but also gets to throw in death, bucketloads of angst, and a climactic boozy basketball battle. Finally, we’re ready for 1992’s Red Shoe Diaries. Along for the very exciting ride is Cassie from Happy Hour Gets Weird podcast: she and her co-host had talked about actors appearing in softcore pre-fame, and said a few times they were curious about seeing Red Shoe Diaries, so we had a blast chatting about the experience with her. Plus, of course, we talk about the life and career of the film’s pre-fame star, David Duchovny! And there is much to talk about. There’s the unfinished PhD in English Literature, the recent ventures into music and novels, and of course, the universally recognised role for which everyone knows him: evil venture capitalist Brad in Beethoven. Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 87 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! Our buddy Mike joins us for the first in another series of films: this time it’s Donald F. Glut’s vampire and mummy films! We’re starting with 2001’s The Erotic Rites of Countess Dracula, and boy what a beginning it is. It’s all about a woman turned into a vampire by William Smith in the late ‘60s, who finds in the present day (of 2001) that she wishes for mortality. Glut is a titan of not just the film world, but also books, comics, and cartoons, and a whole lot more. We will definitely explore all of his career achievements in a future episode. This is not that episode: this is the second of three episodes we recorded three weeks in a row. Frankly, the show is a lot of work, so sometimes while you could talk about the life of William Smith, you half-ass it and talk about the life and career (mostly career) of the movie’s star, Elizabeth X, aka Brick Randall. Elizabeth X made some hardcore movies, and she made two softcore movies. This is the story of those movies, their titles, and the years in which they were released. Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 86 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! Back in episode 15, we looked at the 1978 comedy musical Fairy Tales, which for the most part we did not care for. Director Harry Hurwitz continued making films into the ‘90s, however, so we check out his 1994 swansong, art themed erotic conspiracy thriller Fleshtone. Martin Kemp (bassist from Spandau Ballet and star of Cyber Bandits) is a tortured artist obsessed with the intersection of romance, art, sex and death, who finds himself drawn into a terrifying and deadly conspiracy when he calls a personals ad in a sex paper. They find they’re enormously similar, in that they both like swapping nude photos (through the mail) and they’re both freakish outcasts because they’re interested in serial killers. The ‘90s sure were a different time. Now they’d just co-host a popular podcast together. Appropriately, we’re joined in this art themed adventure by actual artist and everybody’s favourite, Jimmy Ether. Plus, we take a look at the life and career of writer and director Harry Hurwitz! Hurwitz wasn’t just a filmmaker - he was also a painter, and a film and art teacher. Amongst his students was the great Joe Dante, who said there’s a little bit of Hurwitz’s debut film in every Joe Dante film. Please support our Patreon, if you can! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 85 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! Once again, we are joined by Matt from Movie Melt and Songs on Trial for another fan favourite drunkcasting episode. Except Matt isn’t drinking this time (the Australians bravely attempt to make up for this by getting drunk enough to sing Bond themes at one point). One thing Matt really loves is the mermaid films directed by Perry Tong, so we check out one of the more highly regarded entries, Mermaid's Quest: Search For the King of the Nile. Disappointingly, there are no mermaids, in the sense that all characters in this film are walking around on those...whad'ya call 'em?...oh - feet. But there is topless scuba diving! Also this episode: songs both from the movie musical you’re assuming we played songs from, songs about having sex with mermaids, a mermaid erotic audio story, general drunkcasting idiocy, and a whole lot of clips of Miss Brat Dom because we recorded an episode of Patreon bonus cast In Search of the Perfect Podcast moments before this show. Plus, the life and career of Perry Tong! Not only did he write and direct 17 mermaid films in about four years, he was also an author and producer, and a band manager in the ‘60s. These days, you can find him behind the counter at Pop’s Safari Room Cigars & Fine Wines and KTF & Collectibles in Fort Worth, Texas! Please support our Patreon, if you can! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 84 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! Our buds Ash and Avery from well-liked-cousin-podcast For the Story are back, and we decide to turn to a reliable old friend, Ernest G. Sauer, and check out his 1995 newsroom comedy Broadcast Bombshells! There’s also a telethon, complete with comedy guests including an accordionist, and the threat of a bomb hanging over the whole thing. Somehow, though, no one really recalls much of the movie, with the obvious exception of Joey Mennonna’s classic hit Kitten with a Whip (written for the movie, not actually a hit). We also talk about the life and career of the movie’s star, Amy Lynn Baxter. Baxter was Penthouse Pet of the Month in June 1990, and made an absolute fortune from feature erotic dancing and some seriously smart money management. She also had a confusing engagement to Ed Begley Jr.! Please support our Patreon, if you can! Hey, why not call us on our hotline? (724) 246-4669! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 83 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! We’re joined this episode by Kelly and Ken from Compañeros Radio Network sister show Heavy Leather Horror Show, taking on not a horror film, but art crimes! Carnal art crimes, in Gregory Dark’s 1991 erotic thriller Carnal Crimes. This is Dark’s first erotic thriller, all the pieces are in place: an unsatisfied wife gets involved with a mysterious and mulleted photographer, only to find he’s more dangerous than he seems. Also, he really likes bananas! Does it all come together? Well, not quite, but there’s plenty to chew on nonetheless! Plus, we talk about the life and career of the film’s star, the great Linda Carol. Carol is best known for playing the lead in Reform School Girls, but it turns out you can’t talk about the life of Linda Carol without also talking about the life of New England mobster Champagne Denny. It’s quite a tale. Please support our Patreon, if you can! Hey, why not call us on our hotline? (724) 246-4669! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 82 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! This episode, we’re joined by our good bud Carlo, from Crud Buddies and the Notes From the Back Row podcast. And all of us are wrapped up into a fatal cuddle from the master David DeCoteau, as we check out his 1989 proto-erotic thriller Deadly Embrace! It’s sort of like an erotic thriller, in that it’s about an affair that turns deadly - a very familiar erotic thriller plot - but also there’s about 50 minutes where people mostly just talk on the phone to each other. On the plus side, it does star Jan-Michael Vincent, Linnea Quigley and Ken Abraham, and DeCoteau’s camera is all about Ken Abraham in this movie, so that at least is a lot of fun. And we talk about the film’s female lead, Mindi Miller (aka Ty Randolph). Miller was not only an actor, but also a stunt performer, model, bodybuilder and - more recently - a skin care esthetician. She also had a rather famous boyfriend in the ‘70s! As a bonus, not only do you get to hear all about that, you get to hear her (in a clip from another podcast) talk about how her ex-boyfriend can still time travel and visit her in dreams even though he’s long dead. Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 81 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! This time, we’re joined by Shannon Tweed superfan Tanner (who runs the StrippedToKill account on Instagram). But never let it be said Get Soft choose the easy roads or obvious films: instead of going for one of her big name projects, we decided to talk about Powerplay, a 1999 erotic thriller slash sort of comedy? Something like that. It is a weird one, either way - after the death of her step father, a ‘90s hot young woman chases down the gold digging black widow who was responsible for his demise. She also brings along her 40-something boyfriend, who has zero charisma, and even less idea of how to track someone down with any kind of subtlety. There’s kickboxing, there’s some serious, serious gore, strange comic relief, a soundtrack that makes at least half the cast of the show cry with laughter, and copious amounts of Shannon Tweed acting evil. Of course, you can’t have a Shannon Tweed superfan on the show without talking about the life and career of the queen of erotic thrillers. We chart the rise and rise of Shannon Tweed from mink farm to Playboy mansion, all the way to reality show superstardom with Gene Simmons. Please support our Patreon, if you can! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 80 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! This time around, we finish up the final three episodes of Submission, the 2016 BDSM drama series by the great Jacky St James! The first three episodes didn’t go down great with the gang - will things pick up? Can a truly shocking final twist redeem the show? At the very least, we did receive a nice note from Jacky St James saying she liked our discussion of the first three episodes, so there’s that. Plus, having talked about Jacky last time, we take a look at the life and career of the biggest name star of the show: the legendary Raylin Joy, better known as Skin Diamond! Joy got into porn almost without really meaning to make a career out of it, but then became a superstar. She left the industry in 2016, so we check out some of what she’s been doing since - music and modelling, mostly! Please support our Patreon, if you can! Hey, why not call us on our hotline? Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 79 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! We haven’t done a TV show for almost 12 months now, since we finished our run on Hot Springs Hotel, so it’s well past time we looked at that wild corner of the softcore landscape. From weirdo ‘90s comedy, this time we’re moving into the most contemporary thing we’ve ever done: the 2016, six episode BDSM drama series, Submission! We’re joined once again by the legendary Pinky for this dizzying mix of pleasure and pain. Submission is the softcore debut for writer, director and co-creator Jacky St. James, who is responsible for the phenomenally successful hardcore series The Submission of Emma Marx, which - much like this series - attempted to redefine BDSM fiction following that whole 50 Shades business. But will a bunch of people who have absolutely no experience or particular interest in BDSM submit to the show’s charms? And, of course, we look into the life and career of Jacky St. James, one of the most important and successful female writer/directors in modern hardcore. Astonishingly, she got into the business when she won a script writing competition, which is cool, but also means she gets asked to retell the story every single time she’s interviewed, which seems like it would get tiring. Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 78 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! It’s been a while since we’ve done a British film, and even longer since we’ve done a good old raunchy British sex comedy. So, this episode, the core trio check out 1974’s Confessions of a Sex Maniac, aka The Man Who Couldn’t Get Enough! An unusually unprofessional, sex obsessed young architect decides to design a building based on the perfect breast, but of course he needs to find the perfect breast first. Those Brits, right? What a bunch. Turns out the movie is sort of like a sex comedy, but without actual jokes. So that’s odd. For some reason, it stars Roger Lloyd Pack, who’s probably best known from either one of the Harry Potter movies, The Vicar of Dibley, or Only Fools and Horses, depending on how old you are and if you’re from either the UK or a British colony. But he was also a Shakespearean actor, and fiercely left wing, pro-union, and pro-public education, public broadcasting, public health, and public transport. Please support our Patreon, if you can! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 77 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! This episode, we’re joined by Movie Melt and Songs on Trial’s own Matt, which generally means two things: we’re drinking, and we’re doing something weird. Both are applicable in this case. We check out 1999 but also kind of 1997’s Eve’s Beach Fantasy, starring April Adams, who was briefly sort of a big deal in hardcore between 1994 and 1997. This is her only softcore appearance, but also it sort of wasn’t, because Eve’s Beach Fantasy is really repurposed and re-edited 1997 hardcore film Forbidden. Somehow, this softcore version is 87 minutes long when the hardcore version is only 80 minutes. Why? Well, it is certainly not a case of more plot being added, that’s for sure. Naturally, we talk about April Adams herself, because she’s the big star in this one. Granted, it turns out there’s not a whole lot of info about her beyond her two and a bit years and 40-something hardcore credits, but perhaps 90 seconds of her being interviewed in Randy West’s Up And Cummers 16 will suffice? Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 76 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! We continue our look at the Femalien series this episode, and take on 1998’s surprisingly direct sequel Femalien 2! This time, we’re joined not only by Heather from sister podcast Movie Melt, but also Ash and Avery from For the Story! It’s like our cousin podcast, I guess? Nephew podcast maybe. Anyway, Kara the alien is back, but the whole story revolves around two aliens sent to find her and bring her back to the home planet. It’s a neat twist, but it does unfortunately mean there’s a significantly less Kara, which is an issue because she was kind of the highlight of the first movie. And even though there’s less of her, we still look at the life and career of Venesa Talor: Kara herself! From lip-sync make-your-own-music-videos in her teens to writing and performing an entire musical, we talk about it all! Please support our Patreon, if you can! Hey, why not call us on our hotline? Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 75 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! After a few very quiet years, the big news is that there’s a new softcore movie coming out soon - the third film in the Femalien series! We will, naturally, cover that, but first we need to start back at the beginning so we understand the deep lore and continuity of the series. So, this episode we look at 1996’s Femalien, from Full Moon offshoot Surrender Cinema. And for no reason other than the fact she’s an absolute delight and we adore her, we’re joined by actor, writer and director Honey Lauren! You might know her from Men Cry Bullets, Satan Was a Lady, and Vice Academy 4, 5 and 6, but you should also check out the short she wrote and directed recently, Wives of the Skies. It’s really very excellent. Femalien is packed with sex scenes that go on too long, but we all find there’s a lot to like in between. One of the highlights of the film is the great Jacqueline Lovell. She was one of the biggest names in nude modelling in the mid-’90s, conquering the internet before anyone knew it was a thing to conquer, but she also made some really memorable performances in Full Moon films like Head of the Family. Since then, she’s written and directed a number of films herself, along with her husband. We now have a Patreon, and we’d be so excited if you’d help us out with just a few dollars a month. Thank you to everyone who’s already jumped on board - it’s enormously flattering. Hey, why not call us on our hotline? (724) 246-4669! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 74 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! It’s the fourth and final installment of our ongoing look at Playboy’s Inside Out anthology series, and it’s just the lads again: Siobhan had a 98th birthday party to attend, and turns out she wasn’t entirely unhappy about missing this one anyway. Still, if there was ever a team of all-boys who could fill in for everyone’s favourite lady co-host, it’s Dr Snuggles, Drew, Texas Mike and Bobby from the ever wonderful Grindbin Podcast. Truly A-list. Or at least B+-list. Inside Out 4 is not as weird and wonderful as previous volumes, but it’s also not as objectionable, on the plus side. It does feature appearances from the Raimi brothers - Ted in front of the camera, Sam behind it - and of course there's the third and final short from the delightful Joe Frank. It also features debut short films for both the great Robert Kubilos (I Like to Play Games, Embrace the Darkness II & III) and Antoine Fuqua, singularly one of the greatest action directors of the 21st century (Olympus Has Fallen, The Equalizer, Shooter). Have you seen Shooter yet, by the way? It’s one of the best action films ever - not a joke - and it feels like we talk about it every other week, and honestly it’s a lot more interesting to talk about than Inside Out 4. Go watch Shooter and then call our voicemail line or send us an email to tell us what you thought. Also please stay safe and healthy. Hey, why not call us on our hotline? (724) 246-4669! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 73 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! Having conquered the German language last episode, the gang turn their hand to Italian, checking out crazy 1993 cousin-fucking erotic-thriller Graffiante Desiderio, aka Craving Desire! A lot of listeners would probably be familiar with Sergio Martino, famous for Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key, All the Colors of the Dark, Torso, and The Suspicious Death of a Minor in the ‘70s. Well, this is what he was doing in the ‘90s. But honestly that’s not the headline here. The main reason to listen to this episode is that our guest is Pinky, the host of the greatest podcast in the history of the medium, The Pink Latex Show! To say having her appear as a guest is a dream come true would be putting it mildly. Apologies to all past and future guests, but this is the big one and we could, if we wanted, retire happy now. We won’t, but we could. Also, we talk about the star of Graffiante Desiderio: model and actor Vittoria Belvedere! These days, she’s thrilling audiences on stage in musical theatre, appearing in roles such as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady, and Maria in The Sound of Music! Hey, why not call us on our hotline? Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 72 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! It’s off to Germany and also The Netherlands and also Switzerland and probably some other countries in the very, very late ‘60s, as Herr Doktor Snuggles and the gang check out Erwin C. Dietrich and also Jack Hill’s 1970 sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll far-out improv road trip classic, Ich - Ein Groupie, aka Higher and Higher! And what a gang it is: power couple Ken and Stacey of the Heavy Leather entertainment empire are back, as is Seattle rock writer extraordinaire Cherrybomb! It’s like a mini-Movies About Girls Show reunion. Accordingly, there is noisy chaos. There is also plenty of Herr Doktor Snuggles absolutely butchering a lot of German words, so enjoy that. Much of the terrifying German mispronunciation comes as we look at the life and career of the star of Ich - Ein Groupie: Ingrid Steeger! From her beginnings growing up sleeping on the stove in a one room flat with her family in post-war Berlin, to her superstardom on German TV in the mid-’70s on sketch comedy phenomenon Klimbim, she had quite the rise to fame. At one point, 98% of Germans knew who she was! Granted, things didn’t exactly stay at that level, but you’ll be pleased to know (as a sort of postscript to the Softcore Spotlight on the show) that she’s on the mend and heading home after her recent heart attack. Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 71 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! Siobhan is out with a cold this week, so the all guy gang of Dr Snuggles, Drew Buzzy, Texas Mike and Bobby from The Grindbin podcast have to deal with volume three of Playboy’s Inside Out anthology series by themselves. Inside Out has been quite a project to look at. We’ve had good times, and bad times. We have not had a lot of erotic times, which is odd for an erotic anthology series, but that’s life. Volume three is no different. We get a silent short in which old people turn young briefly then die, Greg Louganis dressed like a sexy fish man, another surreal Joe Frank effort, Greg Louganis dressed like a sexy fish man, some actually funny comedy about an impending nuclear apocalypse in Florida, but also an Alexander Payne (yes, that Alexander Payne) directed short in which a woman forces herself upon a mentally ill Vietnam veteran who she may or may not have dated 25 or so years prior. It’s hard to come back from that. Some of us didn’t, in a lot of ways. Greg Louganis dressed like a sexy fish man healed some of us, but we left some good men behind. Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 70 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! A while ago, our good buddy Lee from They Must Be Destroyed On Sight! podcast called our voicemail line (a thing you should do too) and said, hey, you should really do a Christine Nguyen film! Goddamn, we said, that’s a good point - how have we gone 2 and a half years without a movie featuring the legendary Christine Nguyen?! The next question was which one to do, although that turned out to be somewhat simple: clearly we had to do Fred Olen Ray’s 2006 spooky sorta musical Ghost in a Teeny Bikini. It’s got songs (three songs), spooky happenings, some truly brilliant dialogue, and some career defining performances from the likes of Brad Bartram and Voodoo. Plus, we look at scene stealer, owner of truly gigantic boots and one of the reasons Fred even attempted a spooky musical softcore comedy, the amazing Evan Stone. Stone’s life story has to be heard to be believed: there’s Frisbee golf, knee injuries, dinner theatre with a white Andalusian stallion named Dartanian, and approximately 2,000 hardcore scenes. And it all starts with Evan performing the role of Anne Frank in high school. Hey, why not call us on our hotline? (724) 246-4669! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 69 (nice) of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! As the world’s number one softcore movie podcast, we kind of had to serve up something special for episode 69, so we’re not only taking at look at gold digging 2009 comedy Cougar School, but talking to one of the film’s stars too: the great Brandon Ruckdashel! Brandon is probably best known as one of the stars of the softcore TV series Co-Ed Confidential - he played Zach in seasons 3 and 4. In fact, he plays a character named Zach in Cougar School too, and many of his Co-Ed Confidential co-stars show up as well - including legends like Michelle Maylene and Randy Spears. Turns out the movie was initially meant to be a cinematic spin-off from the TV show, until one of the rights holders gave that idea the thumbs down. Nonetheless, Brandon confirms that he considers it a canonical part of the Co-Ed Confidential Cinematic Universe. That’s a Get Soft exclusive you can take to the bank! Naturally, as well as getting the low-down from Brandon on what it was like working in softcore between 2009 and 2015, we also talk with him about the rest of his life and career! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 68 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! We’re joined once again by Bobby from the tremendous Grindbin podcast, and our pal Texas Mike, as our regular look at Playboy’s Inside Out anthology series continues this episode! Volume 2 is, if anything, possibly stranger than the first volume. It certainly features significantly less of what you might call erotic content - although we do find out that one of the shorts is a favourite amongst the flattening fetish community, so there’s that. But it does feature a hell of a cast, including Bruce Glover, Tane McClure, Heather Elizabeth Parkhurst, Bill Moseley, George ‘Buck’ Flower, Kitten Natividad, and PBS radio host Joe Frank. Plus, there’s directors like music video superstar Nigel Dick (most famous for Baby One More Time and Oops I Did It Again with Britney), Nicholas Brandt (who did Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You as Alan Smithee), and Hellraiser II’s Tony Randel, back for more. Once again, there’s no Softcore Spotlight, but we still somehow go well into our second hour, mostly because we’re a bit stunned by the sheer weirdness of these videos. Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 67 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! Every few months, we like to continue our chronological look at the career of the one and only Zalman King. We started with the delightful Two Moon Junction, then marvelled at the oddness of Wild Orchid, and this time we try to get our heads around in name only sequel/orphan prostitution period piece/high school drama epic Wild Orchid II: Blue Movie Blue, aka Wild Orchid II: Two Shades of Blue. Even with the added might of guests Cherrybomb and Holly, it’s not entirely clear if we really do manage to work it out. Zalman King is a super weird guy, and he made some super weird movies, and they’re probably not going to get any less weird as we keep looking through them. We definitely don’t work out what Tom Skerritt is doing in the movie. Did Tom Skerritt know what he was doing in this movie? Probably not. We also focus on the life and career of the great Nina Siemaszko, who plays the titular Blue. She experienced early career success in twin Corey smash hit License to Drive, but then evidently elected to play a character named Blue in a Zalman King movie, which is a thing you could do, I guess. A few months later she shot some scenes for a film called Reservoir Dogs, though she was cut from the film before it was released. Hey, why not call us on our hotline? (724) 246-4669! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 66 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! Long time listeners may recall back in episode 27 we looked at Gary Graver’s unjustly forgotten 1973 weirdo classic ...And When She Was Bad. It’s one of the most incredible films we’ve looked at on the podcast, but one of the craziest things about it is that Graver later remade it in 1991 or so as Angel Eyes (with the great Fred Olen Ray producing). 1991 was slightly less receptive to 5+ minute electro-prog soundtracked psychedelic sequences though, so Graver had to jam in a subplot in which Erik Estrada plays a loan shark/drug dealer (whose boss is Richard Harrison, of all people). Also Monique Gabrielle stars this time around, so it’s less clear how old the main character Angel is meant to be - is she a teenager like in the original, or is she in her late 20s like Gabrielle was at the time? Impossible to know. Plus, we focus on the life and career of one of the film’s other stars - the legendary, late, great John Phillip Law! You probably know him from the two films he made in 1968 while in Italy, Danger: Diabolik and Barbarella! He never quite hit the big time in the US - possibly because he turned down Jon Voight’s role in Midnight Cowboy and missed out on Nicholson’s role in Easy Rider due to scheduling issues - but he never lacked work overseas. In fact, he estimated later in his life he made films in 24 different countries! Hey, why not call us on our hotline? (724) 246-4669! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 65 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! This time around, we dip into the weird and varied collection that is Playboy’s Inside Out anthology series, starting - appropriately enough - with the first volume, and joining us in this venture is the great Bobby, from the Grindbin Podcast. We talk about the background of the series, and its links to music videos, and music video legends like Nigel Dick, David Fincher, and more! Even more amazingly (for some of the cast, at least) we talk about its links to EA’s SSX snowboarding series of video games - the greatest snowboarding games ever made! Each of the four volumes released by Playboy contain 9 shorts. For one thing, this means that only 37 shorts ever made to home video, out of the 74 produced for the series when it aired on the Playboy Channel. For another thing, this means there’s a heck of a lot of actors and directors involved in even one of these videos, so in the interests of brevity, we’ve cut the Softcore Spotlight this time around. However, you’ll still hear about the background of creators like incredible writer-director Lizzie Borden, Hellbound: Hellraiser II director Tony Randel, Supergirl TV series creator Ali Adler, and Alexander Payne, who went on to direct Election and Sideways (also weirdly he co-wrote Jurassic Park III with Jim Taylor, who also works with him here). It’s a pretty oddball bunch, but then, it’s a pretty oddball series! Hey, why not call us on our hotline? (724) 246-4669! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 64 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! Sometimes, as regular listeners would know, we like to have a few drinks with our buddy Matt from our Companeros Radio Network sister shows Movie Melt and Songs on Trial. This was taken to an extreme with episode 60, and we didn’t think we’d be doing it again quite this soon but here we are: drunk and recording an episode about 1998 pseudo-documentary Anna Nicole Smith: Exposed. It’s not quite as drunken as episode 60, but there was rather a lot of Jagermeister consumed in honour of that Anna Nicole Show Christmas episode where she had people doing shots of Jager from an ice sculpture of her breasts. The actual feature goes for about an hour. This episode is 3 and a half hours. For once, we get the movie talk done in less time than the movie runs for - it’s more the 2 and a half hour Softcore Spotlight that contributes to our run time on this one. And surely you can guess who the subject of that is. Yep, it’s the great Jason Schnuit, who plays Anna’s chef. Just kidding: it’s Anna. Of course it’s Anna. And what else could we do but spend 150 minutes talking about her life? She’s nothing short of legendary - this one’s for you, Anna! Very nice tower, we are leading your hair space. Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 63 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! We’ve reached the final installment of the Embrace the Darkness trilogy already. Part II was one of the best movies we’ve done in a long time (according to everyone other than Jimmy Ether, at least). Will Part III get the same kind of amazing reception? We’ve got two guests - Lee Russell from They Must Be Destroyed On Sight! podcast and film composer/musician Timothy Fife - to help us work that out. It goes in some weird directions, let’s just say that. This time, Jennifer has to decide between a romance with a mortal journalist, and one with a 200 year old vampire named Victor who wants to make her the Queen of the Vampires. What will she choose? The answer will - quite honestly - surprise you. That said, the big surprise is also the most disappointing thing about the film - fan favourite vampiric weirdo Jack is written out of the film very early on. RIP Jack. Your bizarre line delivery will never be forgotten. Out-acting the heck out of practically everyone in this movie is the always delightful Tiffany Shepis. Naturally, we focus on her life and career in our Spotlight, which is handy because it turns out Lee is a SUPER FAN. She’s well on her way to 150 credits on IMDB, and she’s only just hit 40. And it’s worth noting that at least a handful of those credits are with friend of the show Rolfe Kanefsky! Hey, why not call us on our hotline? (724) 246-4669! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 62 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! Vampire-mania continues at Get Soft, which actually seems appropriate now that we’re into October. Last episode, we looked at Kelley Cauthen’s 1999 erotic horror Embrace the Darkness. This episode, it’s Robert Kubilos’ 2002 sequel, Embrace the Darkness II! You can probably guess what we’re doing on episode 63. None of the original cast return for this sequel - in fact, the story only sort of lines up with what happened in the first one. But, it’s written by the incomparable duo of Ed Gorsuch and April White, and it swaps gothic warehouse loft chic for sci-fi sex rooms, goth clubs and Matrix-inspired fashion. Not to spoil our feelings on the matter, but these things are very hard to resist for much of the cast, with the exception of our guest Jimmy Ether, who is frankly as hard to please as he is easy to love. Softcore Spotlight-wise, we look at Catalina Larrañaga, who plays the vampire Lizzie. She had a short but impactful career in softcore, starring in stuff like Corporate Fantasy - which she also co-wrote! - and Loveblind. But she stopped acting in 2006, and became a Certified Holistic Health Practitioner, a Certified Holistic Nutritionist, and a Master Herbalist. None of those are real things, but it hasn’t stopped her from having a very successful career as Kitty Martone, the Healthy Gut Girl, battling leaky gut syndrome (also not a real thing) and vaccine-induced autism (definitely not a real thing). So, uh, our general veneer of congenial and encouraging politeness slips briefly on this one, shall we say. Hey, why not call us on our hotline? (724) 246-4669! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 61 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! As we inch closer to October, how better to celebrate the spookiest of months than with a trio of vampire films? So, we’re looking at Playboy’s Embrace the Darkness series, back to back! We start, logically, with the first film, directed by the great Kelley Cauthen, in which a “performance artist” named Jennifer falls for a vampire who lives across the street from her named Galen. Bad idea? Sure, probably. But that’s not the big news - the big news is this episode’s guests. Many of you would know that Alistair, Siobhan and Drew all got their start in podcasting on the legendary Movies About Girls Show. Well, we’re joined this episode by Ken and Stacey, one time king and queen of podcasting, now the brains (and many other body organs) behind Boston public access superhits Heavy Leather Topless Dance Party and Heavy Leather Music Video! It’s just like the good old days! Plus, we also more or less get around to talking about the life and career of Kevin Spirtas, who plays the vampire Galen! You might know him as Kevin Blair, one of the stars of Friday the 13th Part VII. Or maybe you know him from his six years as Dr. Craig Wesley on Days of Our Lives. Or, from his webseries After Forever, which just won an astonishing six Daytime Emmys. Or, heck, even it’s possible you know him from his one man, all singing, all dancing stage show Night and Days! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 60 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! Sometimes, when we do slightly odder fare on the show, we like to start recording a little later, have a few drinks and get a bit loose. We’ve done a few like that before (New York Nights, The Naked Detective, Tina and the Professor). Joined by drunkcasting hero Matt, from our sister podcasts Songs on Trial and Movie Melt, we decided to do it again this episode, because Peter Kay’s 1987 British sort-of-comedy breast-fetishising shot-on-video epic Miss-Adventures at Mega Boob Manor (aka Action Video Presents Mega Manor) is certainly one of the odder movies we’ve done. Something happened though, and the next thing we knew our other guest Tim had left and it was 7 and a half hours later, and we were unbelievably drunk. To top it off, then we had audio issues with the last half hour of the show, so we had to re-record that. The result is almost 4 hours of Get Soft, which is a ridiculous runtime for a podcast. It’s either our best episode or our worst - at this point we have no ability to know, but please give us a call and tell us. The Softcore Spotlight focuses on Stacey Owen, one of only three actors credited in the film. Owen was a Scottish model who’d recently won (or come second in, depends on the source) 1986 Miss Wet T-Shirt World Competition, and was in her first film with Miss-Adventures at Mega Boob Manor, and was on the verge of superstardom. Though she only modelled between 1986 (maybe 1985, depends on the source) and 1991, she’s still remembered very fondly by Brits and Scots of a certain age. We go through her story, aided by clips from the ‘documentary’ The Stacey Owen Story! Hey, why not call us on our hotline? (724) 246-4669! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 59 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! Well, here it is. The big finale. This is how it all ends! We’re done, and there’s no more. No more Hot Springs Hotel, that is - not Get Soft. Still, as we check out the last three episodes (Layout, Girls in the Band, and Fantasy) of everyone’s favourite softcore sitcom from 1997, it feels like we’ve really come to the end of quite a journey. We’ve grown to more or less love the characters, the actors, and even the creators of this weird little footnote in softcore history. Honestly, we get a little misty eyed this episode, but who can blame us? Bye Randy. Bye Kat. So long Lacey, Theo, Minnie, Vicky, Donna, and the rest of the staff! We also sort of take things full circle, by looking at the life and career of the first actor we saw on the series - the woman who delivered that fateful telegram, Deanna Merryman! She played a bunch of other characters on the show too, often changing character names from episode to episode, as we discover in these last three. And she also made national news twice: once in 1992, and again in 2002! Hey, why not call us on our hotline? (724) 246-4669! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 58 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! Drew declared it Dan Golden and Maria Ford month, so having looked over 1994’s Saturday Night Special last episode, this time we go for one of their most famous collaborations: 1995’s Stripteaser. A psychopathic madman - played by the astounding Rick Dean, in his most incredible performance ever - takes the staff and customers of a strip club named Zipper’s Clown Palace hostage, and then proceeds to alternate between forcing them to act out his whims, and monologuing at them. Seriously, Dean has like a 15 minute monologue in this one. It’s like nothing you’ve ever seen on film before. And of course, given it’s his magnum opus, how could we not look at the life and times of Rick Dean? He was a trained stage actor, and a favourite of a number of LA avant garde playwrights. Unfortunately, he never got the chance to show his skills in A movies, but that’s their loss, right? The B movie world got some seriously unforgettable work from him. Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 57 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! Drew has declared it Dan Golden and Maria Ford month, and who are we to argue with Drew now that he’s been promoted? The next two episodes are films directed by Dan Golden, starring his regular collaborator Maria Ford (and also both star his other regular collaborator, Rick Dean, as it happens). The first is Golden’s 1994 country music and murder softcore romance Saturday Night Special, and Get Soft’s regular collaborator, Jaymz from the NBA Straya podcast, comes along for the ride! Ford and Dean are joined in the movie by country/rockabilly superstar Billy Burnette in his first acting role, and also briefly joined by ol’ crazy eyes, Mick Fleetwood. So that’s unexpected. And, even though it’s Dan Golden and Maria Ford month, we’re actually turning the Softcore Spotlight on some of the male leads for this episode and the next one. There’s plenty of time to get to Golden and Ford later, but when else will we get to talk about Billy Burnette? Never, that’s when! So we talk about his life and career in both music and film. He was in Fleetwood Mac in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, you know. Also, he started his singing career when he was just seven years old! We sample a bunch of hits from throughout his career (and maybe one or two misses, to be honest - sorry Billy). Hey, why not call us on our hotline? (724) 246-4669! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 56 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! It’s our fourth run at Showtime softcore sitcom Hot Springs Hotel, as we check out episodes 10, 11, and 12: To Your Health, Hole in One, and AWOL. Maybe you’ve heard of this show? It’s about two siblings named Kat and Randy. They’d been living together - just the two of them - in a very small lodging, until they were informed about the passing of their great aunt (via telegram). Well, their great aunt was a hotelier. She owned one place in a town called Desert Hot Springs. And so the siblings took over the running of this hotel - this Hot Springs Hotel. Fascinating tale. Things were really slowing down in this show for a while, but turns out AWOL is one of the weirdest pieces of television any of the cast have ever seen, particularly for something that bills itself as ‘erotic’. It’s very, very odd stuff. Plus, we finally take the time to talk about the life and times of the show’s creator, James Glenn Dudelson. It’s a story that involves James, his brother Robert, his father Stanley, a writer-director-producer-editor named Ava Cadell, actor-writer Lanny Horn, and actor-writer-director Clark Brandon, and also the Nightmare on Elm Street, Day of the Dead, and Creepshow franchises! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 55 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! How else could we follow last episode’s look at Paul Thomas’ 1992 erotic drama The Pamela Principle but with a look at Edward Holzman’s 1994 sequel Seduce Me: Pamela Principle 2? It’s the only thing that would make sense, although sequel is probably not the right term for it, really - it’s more a reboot, to use the modern parlance. It takes the general plot of the first movie - guy having middle-life crisis has affair with younger woman named Pamela - and tries to improve the execution. Weirdly, it even has cameos from the guy who played the best friend in the first movie, and the guy who was Pamela’s ex-boyfriend. And, if that’s not enough excitement, Drew gets a promotion, and we’re joined by Heather from Songs on Trial and Movie Melt, and also our good friend Paul C. Miller, director of Get Soft favourite Maximum Thrust! His call drops out mere seconds from the end of the show. Also the show is over three hours this week for some reason that I really can’t work out. Sorry or not sorry, depending on whether ridiculously long podcasts are your thing. Plus, we look at the life and career of the writer of Pamela Principle 2, Gerard Maguire! Maguire only has a few writing credits, but he’s probably very well known to Australians as an actor - he was Deputy Governor Jim Fletcher in Prisoner (aka Prisoner: Cell Block H), and he’s also done around 40 years worth of voice over work. We got the chance to chat to him, amazingly, and were almost certainly the first people to ever ask him about being on The Bradys, and definitely the first to ask about Pamela Principle 2. Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 54 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! We finally dipped our toes into the vast Axis Entertainment catalogue just a few weeks ago with Gregory Dark’s Night Rhythms, and now we’re back at it again with Paul Thomas’ 1992 erotic drama The Pamela Principle! It answers that age old question: if you dump your wife for a younger woman and then demand that the younger woman does things exactly the way you’ve always done things, will everything work out okay? Spoilers: no. It’s a weird cast in this one, too - the philandering husband and the younger woman are both relative unknowns, but then you’ve got people like the great Tamara Landry, Frank Pesce, '90s pron sensation K.C. Williams, and ‘60s heartthrob Troy Donahue in secondary (if not tertiary) roles. Plus, we take a look at the life and times of Troy Donahue, even though he really only has two scenes. Why? Because he had a hell of a life, and there’s a lot to talk about! He went from a high-riding teen heartthrob - complete with his own single! - to being drug and alcohol dependent, living in a bush in Central Park. And, amazingly, he got help and turned things around, and there’s a happy ending (more or less, anyway)! Hey, why not call us on our hotline? (724) 246-4669! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 53 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! We’re heading back to that familiar old story, of a hotel, in a town called Desert Hot Springs, run by two siblings named Randy and Kat. See, they were living by themselves in a flat, when they got a telegram telling them that their rich Aunt Betty had died, and left them a hotel. A Hot Springs Hotel. What a tale! What a concept for a softcore comedy TV show! This time, we check out episodes 7, 8 and 9: Rock Star, Bachelorette Party, and Theo and the Model. Yes, finally Theo gets his time in the sun! And as a bonus: the rock star in episode 7 plays a 1983 Casio DG-20 Digital Guitar. Just like Brett in that one episode of Flight of the Conchords! Plus, we talk about the life and career of episode 7’s titular rock star, guest star Phillip Rhys. After Hot Springs Hotel, his career went from strength to strength: he was intergalactic pop star Proto Zoa in the Disney Channel movie Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century (still the role he’s most recognised for apparently), was in season 2 of 24 (one of the better seasons, for what it’s worth), and was just recently in George R.R. Martin sci-fi series Nightflyers (unclear if anyone has watched the entire series though). Also, he went to school with Jamie Oliver, and was on an episode of Heston’s Feasts. Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 52 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! For some reason, it’s taken us 52 episodes and two years to get around to doing a Gregory Dark film, which is kind of unforgivable, given the impact he had on the erotic thriller genre. Time to rectify that with his 1992 classic Night Rhythms, in which a smooth talking late night radio host is framed for murder, and has to navigate a crazy underground world of strip joints owned by David Carradine, and lesbian salsa clubs. Our buddy Jaymz from the NBA Straya podcast joins us, and in a neat coincidence two of his favourite movie plot points are late night radio hosts, and bars owned by ex-strippers with a heart of gold. So that’s handy! Also, inspired by the movie, we try out a little sexy whispering ASMR. It goes down better with some members of the cast than others, but if that’s your thing you definitely don’t want to miss this episode. Plus, we talk about the life and career of the star of the film, Martin Hewitt. He rose to fame in 1981’s Endless Love alongside Brooke Shields - beating 5,000 other hopefuls for the role, including a guy named Tom Cruise - but his star did not exactly continue to rise, and he ended up in less mainstream fare like Killer Party, Two Moon Junction, Carnal Crimes and of course Night Rhythms. So he decided on a career change, and now he’s a certified member of the American Society of Home Inspectors, and a Master California Real Estate Inspection Association Inspector, and runs his own company: Camelot Home Inspection Services! His Yelp reviews are all very positive! Hey, why not call us on our hotline? (724) 246-4669! Check out the other Compañeros Radio Network shows: Movie Melt Songs on Trial
