In my childhood years, I got to experience something I've cherished ever since: Starry nights.I was lucky to spend time during the summers on my Aunt Eula's and Uncle Ernest's tenant farm in Northeast Texas. With no TV or electronics, we made our own entertainment in the evenings, including “turning on” nature's Big Show. This meant rolling an old bed outdoors as darkness fell, so we could lay back, look up, and marvel at the endless expanse of constellations, comets, the Milky Way, planets, and other wonders of the cosmos. Today, though, 80 percent of Americans never see the starry night, for the artificial glare of city lights blots out nature's spectacular display.But wait – billionaires to the rescue! Musk, Bezos, Zuckerberg, and other high-tech demigods who're spending trillions to foist a brave new world of artificial intelligence on us, claim that their scheme will actually relight the night sky!For real? Of course not.It turns out that they can't get enough cheap land and energy on Earth to supply the phantasmagoric sprawl of data centers their AI hustle will demand. So, they're going to put massive clusters of these systems into orbit, tethered to miles of solar mirrors stretching across our sky. While that means nature's stars-and-stuff will be even more obscured, they say that instead of watching the cosmos, we Earthlings can enjoy the artificial twinkle of their corporate data centers.This is Jim Hightower saying… Lest you think that, surely they wouldn't do this, note that those arrogant billionaire Lords of the Night are already investing humongous sums of money in space data centers As the CEO of one called “Starcloud” bluntly says: “It's not a debate. Here's a paper they released late last year.* On the nerdier side of things, the International Astronomical Union (IAU)'s Centre for the Protection of the Dark and Quiet Sky (CPS) — if that isn't a mouthful, we don't know what is — is working to mitigate the negative impact of satellite constellations. -California has passed three new bills designed to boost privacy for internet users, governor Gavin Newsom's office announced. The biggest one, AB 566, builds on a 2018 law by requiring web browsers to let users universally opt-out of allowing third parties to sell their data. -Apple has removed Eyes Up, an app that collects and archives videos of Immigration Customs and Enforcement arrests, 404 Media reports. The app's removal follows similar action taken against ICEBlock last week, an app that tracks ICE activity in an attempt to offer real-time alerts of when and where arrests are happening. Unlike ICEBlock, though, Eyes Up's main purpose is to serve as an archive, not a tool for eluding government agents. -Verizon is buying the smaller broadband carrier Starry for an undisclosed sum. The acquisition is expected to close by the first quarter of 2026, but is subject to FCC approval. Verizon has already done some work to appease the US government by ending DEI initiatives, so the FCC is likely to give this merger its stamp of approval. Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Chika, Giana, and Dennis from the Vintage Anime Club podcast discuss episodes seven through nine of Nina the Starry Bride! In episode seven, after Set rescues Nina, the two spend the night together in the forest. Nina rescues the cub of the tiger who attacked her. When they arrive in Galgada, Nina makes quite the first impression on Set's brothers. We're back for a new season and are celebrating with two huge stars, who take our Fast Food Quiz VERY seriously. The long wait is over. Dish returns for Season 8 and Nick and Angela welcome two British actors who have conquered Hollywood. Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman join us to chat about their new film, The Roses (a reimagination of 1989's War of The Roses) where they play a deeply dysfunctional married couple.  We start with gin and tonics and a modified Hugo Spritz for Olivia, before serving a glass of Terre di Vita Organic Zibibbo Sicilia, paired with our main course of roast spatchcock chicken with coriander, red chilli and charred limes.
