This week's episode of the Talkhouse Podcast came together by way of my colleague and friend Keenan Kush, who jokingly referred to the music of today's guests as "Keenan-core." We've got a conversation between the duos Kit Sebastian and Pearl & The Oysters. Kit Sebastian came together in London, but their musical (and even geographical) pedigrees are spread much wider. Kit Martin and Merve Erdem, now based in Turkey and France, play music that reflects their locations. Tropicalia and psychedelic pop flirt with an array of other influences to create something that sounds almost out of time. Their latest album New Internationale came out last year on Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label, and it adds Azerbaijani and some funk to the mix. Check out the track “Faust” right here. Pearl & The Oysters is also a duo with international roots, having moved from France over a decade ago to Florida, but ending up in Los Angeles. Jazz and Tropicalia also inform their indie pop, and they also ended up on a hip label run by another musician: In this case, Peanut Butter Wolf's Stones Throw. Juliette Pearl Davis and Joachim Polack—sometimes known as Juju and Jojo—put out a great album last year called Planet Pearl. Check out “Side Quest” from that album right here. In this wide-ranging conversation, these two duos talk about their geographic moves and sounds, analog vs. digital recording, favorite filmmakers, and how one cold email kickstarted Kit Sebastian. Enjoy. Rod Serling singing Christmas carols, garden variety anxiety, and the dog show opener for a Beastie Boys concert. Steve Okonski (Okonski, Durand Jones & The Indications, Aaron Frazer) OKONSKI Entrance Music [RELEASE DATE: 2/28/2025]- https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections/okonski "After nearly two years, Okonski returns with Entrance Music — an album that finds the trio at the height of their improvisational prowess and celebrating the spontaneous and meditative. On the heels of 2023's debut Magnolia, pianist and leader Steve Okonski has reconvened long-time musical collaborators (Durand Jones and the Indications bandmate Aaron Frazer on drums and bassist Michael Isvara “Ish” Montgomery) for another session in the spirit of artists like the Bad Plus, Gerald Clayton, and The Breathing Effect. Ultimately Entrance Music serves as an invitation to early hours, where songs linger in the doorway, announcing their presence before returning to the air, in a meticulous drift into the next. Recorded over a five day session, Entrance Music was one of the first albums committed to tape at Portage Lounge, Terry Cole's studio in Loveland, OH. “It was a new setup, but with Terry behind the dials it was very familiar,” says Okonski. “I can't emphasize enough how much Terry feels like a fourth member [of the band] because of the space he's curating, the energy he is bringing, and the production ideas.” The energy and sound created with the Colemine label head at the helm makes for a listening experience equally at home with ECM or Stones Throw catalogs. From the rippling notes of the pastoral opener, “October,” Entrance Music is lush with anticipation, both band and listener feeling the tension in the tranquility — where the interplay of jazz improvisation and boom bap beats never shortchanges the musicianship but the talent is ever in service of the song. While the band does not play together as often as they would like, not much time is needed for the three to lock in. Montgomery's bass opening to “Passing Through” bends and moves with a singular meditative grace before piano and percussion joins the daylight filling a room with breath and light. If Magnolia resonated with last calls and late nights, Entrance Music counters with early mornings and first cups of coffee. Whereas much of the debut resonates with his time in New York, Entrance Music “feels a little less ‘on the streets at 2 A.M.' and a little more nature-based…a little more ethereal,” says Okonski. “It's definitely age, environment, and family — all of that does come through in the music.”" Excerpt from https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections/okonski Okonski: Bandcamp: https://okonski.bandcamp.com/music Instagram: @steve.okonski Website: https://linktr.ee/okonski Records: https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections Merch: https://okonski.bandcamp.com/merch Durand Jones & The Indications: Bandcamp: https://durandjonesandtheindications.bandcamp Instagram: @durandjonesandtheindications Website: https://store.durandjonesandtheindications.com Records: https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections/durand Merch: https://store.durandjonesandtheindications.com Aaron Frazer Bandcamp: https://aaronfrazermusic.bandcamp.com/music Instagram: @aaron_frazer Website: https://aaronfrazermusic.com Records: https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections/aaron Merch: https://shop.aaronfrazermusic.com The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSn17dSz8kST_j_EH00O4MQ/videos

fWotD Episode 2592: The Ecstatic Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Sunday, 9 June 2024 is The Ecstatic. The Ecstatic is the fourth studio album by American rapper Mos Def, released on June 9, 2009, by the independent record label Downtown Records. After venturing further away from hip hop with an acting career and two poorly received albums, Mos Def signed a recording contract with Downtown and recorded The Ecstatic primarily at the Record Plant in Los Angeles. He worked with producers such as Preservation, Mr. Flash, Oh No, and Madlib, with the latter two reusing instrumentals they had produced on Stones Throw Records. The work of Stones Throw rapper MF Doom was also cited by Mos Def as an influence, while singer Georgia Anne Muldrow, formerly of the record label, performed as one of the album's few guest vocalists, along with rappers Slick Rick and Talib Kweli.Described by music journalists as a conscious and alternative hip hop record, The Ecstatic features an eccentric, internationalist quality. Mos Def's raps about global politics, love, war, spirituality, and social conditions are informed by the zeitgeist of the late 2000s, Black internationalism, and Pan-Islamic ideas, incorporating many Islamic references throughout the album. Its loosely structured, lightly reverbed songs use unconventional time signatures and samples taken from a variety of international musical styles, including Afrobeat, soul, Eurodance, jazz, reggae, Latin, and Middle Eastern music. Mos Def titled the album after one of his favorite novels, Victor LaValle's The Ecstatic (2002), believing its titular phrase evoked his singular musical vision. For the album's front cover, a still from Charles Burnett's 1978 film Killer of Sheep was reproduced in a red tint. The Ecstatic charted at number nine on the Billboard 200 in its first week of release and eventually sold 168,000 copies. Its sales benefited from its presence on Internet blogs and the release of a T-shirt illustrating the record's packaging alongside a label printed with a code redeemable for a free download of the album. To further support the album, Mos Def embarked on an international tour with concerts in North America, Japan, Australia, and the United Kingdom between August 2009 and April 2010. As his DJ on the tour, Preservation began to develop remixes of the album's songs, which he later released on the remix album The REcstatic in 2013.A widespread critical success, The Ecstatic was viewed as a return to form for Mos Def and one of the best albums from 2009, with reviewers applauding its exuberant musical feel, adventurous creative range, and shrewd lyrical performances. Some publications ranked it among the greatest albums of the 2000s decade, including The Times at number 30. However, it struggled to reach mainstream audiences beyond Mos Def's fan base and led the already disillusioned rapper further away from the music industry, resulting in less recorded work from him over subsequent years. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:01 UTC on Sunday, 9 June 2024.For the full current version of the article, see The Ecstatic on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Olivia Neural.

On this week's pod, it's a deep dive into an album from one of our perennial favourites, as it celebrates 20 years. It's the turn of the MF DOOM and Madlib's classic 2004 album Madvillainy by Madvillain, a dense, psychedelic, colourful rap album that quickly cemented itself as one of the best rap albums of all time when it came out on Stones Throw that year. Why is Madvillain so important? It's the sound of two masters of their craft - Madlib deep crate-digging wizz of flipped samples which avoided the musical grid and DOOM's "tripping off the beat kinda" rhymes which defied expectation and form, and became endlessly quotable while retaining complex and comedic intent. Madvillainy is the sound of two elusive creatives ricocheting off each other's oddball styles with disorienting brilliance.Niall and Andrea discuss the album's gestation, recording, leak, samples, lyrics and mythology. In January, we hosted a Listen Closely listening party in the Big Romance in Dublin with this album. Our next one will be Wednesday February 28th with Laurie Anderson's Big Science. Once we hit part three, the big bomb to drop is the latest LP from Bad Bunny, and we also had Pink Pantheress dropping a solo album in just a few weeks' time. Great stuff from the Korean indie and bubbling under K-pop scene as well in part 4, with ADOY heading to SXSW Sydney next month along with tunes from Summer Soul and Chamsom to check out, amongst others. As broadcast October 10, 2023 with plenty of friends in tow. Tonight we open with David Skimming, the mastermind behind the Lunar Isles project, which has made some of the best guitar-centric surf dreams in indie anywhere over the past few years, not just in Korea. His latest is a lovely upbeat affair that is the perfect way to get back into the mode after the Busking World Cup and a bevvy of holidays here in Korea. After that, we had plenty of friends to ride with tonight, as Broken Baby, Scoobert Doobert, and Otis Kane all had fresh cuts to feature in part one, and there was plenty more in store after that with notable joints just out from Masego, Meernaa, veronicavon, Kevin Abstract, and a slew of other worthies, including a great new album from Norwegian cinematic instrumental outfit Orion's Belte called Women, which is absolutely superb and full of surprises.#feelthegravityUTR 10/10/2023Under The RadarTracklist (st:rt)Part 1 (00:00)Lunar Isles – ArrivalScoobert Doobert – All I NeedWild Nothing – Dial ToneBroken Baby – Ugly Polo & Pan – ChamallowKraak & Smaak feat Otis Kane – Ready for YaIzyBeats w/ Masego & Toian – Tipsy Part 2 (33:04)Meernaa – Love Is GoodRobohands – DrivenHoly Hive & The Shacks – Middle of the NightMndsgn – MakeUsuper natural lime – The Boat Pelicat – Safe & Soundveronicavon - Dreamgirl Part 3 (61:13)Katie Ferrara – Loud and ProudHoneywhip – PolaroidKevin Abstract – Blanket bed bug guru – Tightrope Born Days – DreamsA Beacon School – Mantra Part 4 (91:16)Busty & The Bass feat Son Little – Give Me A SmileHala – Run to YouPrateek Kuhad – MulaqatLake Street Dive feat Madison Cunningham – Neighbor SongGeorgia Gets By – Fish Bird Baby BoyOrions Belte feat Oyvind Torvund – I Will Always Miss YouOrions Belte feat Louien – When You're Gone I'll Be Gone

John Carroll Kirby is a musician from Los Angeles. His new record, Blowout, is out today on Stones Throw. We chat about how it's getting harder and harder to get a life, Barbie and Grimace can't occupy this much space in our lives, some Kardashian housekeeping, emerging designer Pinkus, a report from the streets of SF, how much he spent on a (medium) smart water at LAX, we get him set up with an Amex, the Rhodes vs. Nord wars, why he does well in Japan, the exact amount of drinks to have before hitting the stage, going to the Beyonce show in London, when live performances don't need the full band, getting pickpocketed in Rome, the LA river itself catches a stray, him and his gf getting denied at Berghain, the three of us agree to attend the Stagecoach Festival next year, and we close on some sync talk. instagram.com/johncarrollkirby twitter.com/donetodeath twitter.com/themjeans Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode, Aloe and Jeffrey discuss Aloe's relationship with music, what he learned in the corporate world before going into music full time, how artists can create change, his upcoming cause-themed album, his work in biotech, and much more, covering issues like healthcare, criminal justice reform, poverty, and beyond… Watch this episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/d4MqLu2WrKc Learn more: Host: Jeffrey M. With his lyrics drawing influence from socially conscious artists like KRS-One, he put out his first hip-hop mixtape at age 17. Later developing a fierce admiration for such soul musicians as Donny Hathaway and Marvin Gaye, he also discovered an affinity for folk-rock singer/songwriters during his college years. “One of the most important factors in my transition from hip-hop to being a singer was listening to people like Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Kris Kristofferson, and Cat Stevens,” Blacc says. “Their songs are full of emotion that's expressed in strong lyrics, and that had a big impact on me.” After inking a deal with indie label Stones Throw, Blacc released his solo debut Shine Through in 2006 and sophomore album Good Things in 2010. Boosted by the breakout success of “I Need a Dollar” (which was selected as the theme song to HBO's How To Make it In America), Good Things reached gold status in countries around the world and paved the way for his signing to XIX Recordings/Interscope Records in 2012. Made in collaboration with groundbreaking producers like Pharrell Williams, Lift Your Spirit dropped on New Year's Day in 2014, debuted at #4 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, and earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best R&B Album. Looking back on his musical path so far, Blacc notes that landing a deal with XIX Recordings/Interscope prompted a major moment of reckoning, and led him to re-examine his artistic intentions. “When I signed a major-label contract, I recognized the power of having a larger audience, and I promised myself that I'd use my voice for social change,” he says. And in creating his upcoming album, Blacc has kept focused on making music meant to inspire a positive shift in mindset. “When things happening in the world seem so terrible and dark, it's so easy to get stuck in all the negative,” he says. “But I try to do whatever I can to help people out of that. I want my music to be the light.”
This episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast presents an interview with Los Angeles-based writer Will Hagle. Will is a co-host of the Connecting The Classics podcast and a great deal of his work can be found on the webzine Passion of The Weiss. He is also the author of the excellent 33 ⅓ book dedicated to MF DOOM and Madlib's album Madvillainy. The book — which is the focus of this episode — celebrates Madvillainy as a representation of two genius musical minds melding to form one revered supervillain. A product of circumstance, the album came together soon after MF DOOM's resurgence and Madlib's reluctant return from avant-garde jazz to hip-hop. Written from the alternating perspectives of three fake music journalist superheroes — and featuring interviews with Wildchild, Cut Chemist, M.E.D, Walasia, Stones Throw execs, and many other individuals involved with the album's creation — Will's book blends fiction and non-fiction to celebrate Madvillainy not just as an album, but as a folkloric artifact. It is one specific retelling of a story which, like Madvillain's music, continues to spawn infinite legends. In this episode host Michael Shields and Will Hagle discuss both Madlib and MF DOOM's origin story while expounding at length what makes Madvillainy such a special and enduring piece of art. They explore the somewhat disputed stories on how MF DOOM and Madlib connected for the project, and dig into how unique it was that Madvillainy existed as an album that straddled the analog and digital eras. They celebrate the song “Accordion,” as one of the most unparalleled songs in hip-hop history, remark on Madvillainy's profound influence in modern music, and so much more.Grab a copy of Will Hagle's Madvillainy 33⅓ here — and learn more about Will's projects at his subtack. In 1992, Eddie Chacon broke out as one-half of Charles & Eddie, his soul music duo with Charles Pettigrew. Their single "Would I Lie to You?” was a major international hit. Chacon was just a kid growing up in Castro Valley, California, when he decided he would be a music star. Before meeting Pettigrew, Eddie had played in a teenage band with Cliff Burton and Mike Bordin, later of Metallica and Faith No More. He had an alliance with Luther Campbell of the infamous 2 Live Crew, worked with the Dust Brothers. These days, he's making oracular, synth driven soul music that draws equally on the mile deep grooves of Sly Stone's drum machine and the cosmic synth hymns of Alice Coltrane. His latest album is called Sundown, out now from Stones Throw. This week on Transmissions, Eddie joins host Jason P. Woodbury to discuss his partnership with producer John Carroll Kirby, his fascinating years in the music industry, and his collaborative work with his wife, Sissy Chacon. Support Aquarium Drunkard on Patreon. Transmissions is a part of the Talkhouse Podcast Network. Next week on Transmissions? A conversation with Surya Botofasina about his incredible synth meditations and growing up on Alice Coltrane's Ashram.

Afrofuturistic soul with a West Coast feel and African ingredients - Sudan Archives sings and plays her fiddle over cosmic sounds. Sudan Archives' real name is Brittney Denise Parks and she's from Ohio. She starts singing in the gospel choir and her stepfather wants to make an R'n'B star out of her. But Brittney prefers to do her own thing. In Los Angeles, she hangs out at the Low End Theory Club, the epicenter of innovative hip-hop, and also finds her way to the renowned Stones Throw label. In her soundtrack, Sudan Archives tells how her stage name is connected to the anime character Sailor Moon, who inspired her to play the rhythmic violin, and about role models like Stravinsky and Miri Ben-Ari. As broadcast November 22, 2022 with a lot missing. Tonight, we mark 25 years since the tragic and all-too-early suicide of Michael Hutchence. The INXS leading man had become a superstar back in 1987 as the Aussie band's Kick broke through to the US & UK. However, by this date in 1997 Hutchence was struggling with numerous problems, and they apparently became too much for him to bear. Of course, with it being Tuesday night we are getting Triggered with all the new indie and underground we can cram into two hours' worth of radio with Kat Bass once again out with health concerns. The second part to Kiefer's interview with Mndsgn, legendary producer, keyboardist, and prolific recording artist with a stunning discography of eleven acclaimed albums released on labels like Leaving Records and Stones Throw, collaborating with the likes of Joyce Wrice, SiR, and Danny Brown along the way. Mndsgn is also a personal friend of Kiefer and has served as a mentor over the past decade.
On location in the Steel City. Perched on seven hills like Rome, and with a river running underneath, it is the home of football (according to Ant), the only place to get a Hot Roast Pork sandwich and the place that gave me the moment I realised, NOTHING could be better than being in a rock'n'roll band. Of course when you take your recording studio and plonk it in a crowded restaurant you do place yourself at the mercy of fate, and in this case it was a couple of old friends enjoying an early afternoon tea. As broadcast September 27, 2022 with a giant shrine built for St. Quincy of Jones. Tonight we highlight just a tiny fraction of the amazing work Quincy Jones has done outside the studio for charitable and progressive causes, then get into all the new stuff that's a bit off the radar, a tad askance of the mersh dogs, and/or a tidbit too weird for your boomer uncle who's otherwise a pretty sweet guy. Our new indie for this week includes tunes from all over the map, with highlights being stuff from Big Scary, Magdalena Bay, Unusual Demont, and Alvvays amongst the very solid field. #feelthegravityTracklist (st:rt)Part I (00:00)Quincy Jones – The DudeMorning Silk – How You Do ItSofie Royer – Love ParkBig Scary – Asking Right.com – SometimesKainalu & MUNYA – Inhibitions/IntuitionsPart II (34:50)Daylgow - Second Nature Magdalena Bay - Unconditional Jhnovr - Human Natureflatheadstanley - crash n burn Yellow Days - When Morning ComesFIG - Pair of You Part III (65:51)JVKE - this is what falling out of love feels like Milky Chance - Troubled Man Space Equator - Sapphire Emotional Oranges & Unusual Demont - Cardigan THAMA - Needles Believers - Endless Choice Part IV (95:54)Alvvays - Belinda Says Anna of the North - NobodyCharlotte Lawrence - Morning Mind Shrine - Dance Around the Truth The Ways of Seeing - The Other Side of Summer Djo - End of Beginning

A love letter to the city of Los Angeles? A ode to the letter J? J Rocc's new album "A Wonderful Letter" is both of these and more. Hosts Demone Carter and David Ma chop it up with the world famous Beat Junkie about his incredible career and his first new album in over a decade. J Rocc has been a fixture in the worlds of turntablism and beat making for some time. The Stones Throw stalwart talks about his relationships with the late great J Dilla and Madlib as well as nurturing future DJs at The Beat Junkie Institue of Sound. Demone and Dave start off the episode by ruminating on LA rappers who have yet to receive their flowers. Despite being the spring board for the biggest acts in rap there are a great many LA rappers who remain somewhat unsung despite their creative output. Automatic - "Skyscraper" from the 2022 album Excess on Stones Throw. Los Angeles trio Automatic tap into consumerism on their latest single, “Skyscraper,” channeling a materialistic yuppie type, obsessed with consumer culture. “It's about spending your life making money and then spending it to fill the void created by said job,” explained bassist/vocalist Halle Saxon, with bandmate Lola Dompé cheekily adding, "Kind of like going to LA to live your dreams." The track will be released on their forthcoming full-length Excess, out June 24th. Automatic plays Seattle on September 10th and 11th, opening for Osees at Neumos. Sudan Archives - "Home Maker," a 2022 single on Stones Throw. Leave it to Sudan Archives to make domestic life sultry and seductive. After making the move from Cincinnati to her current home of Los Angeles, the acclaimed violinist/vocalist/producer (real name: Brittney Denise Parks) turned to home making to feel more grounded. Her first new single in three years reflects that. “It took nesting — building a home, investing in partners that were worth my investment — to shake my anxiety and depression,” she said in a press release. “For me, homemaking is a service to mental health and coping with fear and isolation. This song is about the effort put into making a relationship work and giving love a place to live.” Check out the video at the link below, directed by Jocelyn Anquetil, and revisit her 2019 KEXP session, filmed at THING! Fest in Fort Worden, WA. Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
