Ross' barn door is off its hinges this week as we break down one of his top ten favorite films, Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan (2010). Black Swan follows the journey of Nina Sayers who has lofty aspirations of dancing both the Black and White Swans in Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, but the part may turn out to be more than she can handle. Ross goes gaga for all the symbolism baked into the crust of the film, Carie is big icked by all of the disgusting body horror as Nina makes her transformation, and the siblings are in awe of the Oscar-winning performance that gave Natalie Portman a seat at the big kids' table.

DARREN ARONOFSKY CH. 4 E2: THERE'S A LITTLE BLACK SWAN ON THE SUN TODAYSeason 11's temporal pincer movement by The Good, The Pod, and The Ugly draws to a close with tricky reflections on BLACK SWAN (2010). Listen to our opinions double, pirouette, and morph during Chapter 4, Episode 2, covering our final Darren Aronofsky movie but not our season's finale, with No-Longer-Special Guest Ryan and his squeaky chair understudy. Long-time Aronofsky collaborator and pod-fav cinematographer Matthew Libatique returns to shoot this tale that'd be like if Dostoevsky's “The Double” mated with Tchaikovsky's “Swan Lake” and their kid was kept in a Barbie-pink child's room as her mother painted her portrait and put mittens on them to keep them from scratching at the feathers erupting from their skin when they won the part of Odette and Odile.Reality fractures (as do opinions during the pod) for Natalie Portman's Nina Sayers in her Oscar-winning performance, causing consternation for one host and glee for others. Ambiguities extend and multiple as Aronofsky claims the ending tragic while Portman believes it triumphant and Host Thomas in front of a car. Is this a story about womanhood and autonomy? The dangers of obsession? The need for a well-balanced meal?Trigger warning for hangnails and those who have allergies to shattered glass. Broken Mirror: Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan Fun talk . . . This week Mr. Chavez and I continue to look at the films of Darren Aronofsky with this discussion of his 2010, Five Time Oscar Nominated (Including Best Picture and Director, and Winner for Best Actress - Natalie Portman) look at the world of Ballet. Aronofsky's film is a tense and often brutal look at the world of artistic perfection featuring a dynamic and fearless performance from Natalie Portman as Nina Sayers, a young ballerina given the opportunity of a lifetime to lead a production of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake. Questions of perfection, training, direction, maninpulation, and sexual harassment are tackled in this layered and frightening film. Take a listen as Mr. Chavez and I look at the film, the culture that spawns it, and the history of such art, lies, sacrifice, and abuse. It's a damn good talk. This week we are very lucky to have award winning writer and director Nijla Mu'min on the program. In 2014, she was selected for the Sundance Institute Screenwriters Intensive and her debut feature, Jinn, won the Special Jury Recognition Award for screenwriting at the 2018 SXSW Film Festival. Jinn tells the story of a high school senior whose mother becomes taken by the beliefs and practices of Islam, which sets up a series of trials for the girl as she tries to navigate her own belief systems. The central character uses dance as a type of release. So it's fitting that the film Nijla has chosen to discuss is Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan. April and she explore the different ways that Nijla's film and Aronofsky's film use dance as a form of expression for the protagonists. Nijla also describes how she relates to Natalie Portman's character Nina Sayers in her pursuit of perfection. Plus, Nijla elaborates on her desire to honor her community in the representation of Islam in her film Jinn. Check out the trailer for Jinn. The film will be in select theaters on November 15th and streaming on November 16th. And if you haven't seen it yet, go watch Black Swan. With April Wolfe with Nijla Mu'min. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Though Natalie Portman won an Academy Award for her role as dancer Nina Sayers, the breakout star of the film, Black Swan, actually turned out to be Mila Kunis who prior to her role as Lily was known for television work. Now 7 years old, Black Swan, directed by Darren Aronofsky, still holds up well. Some folks would consider it a classic, and many folks will say that the film is a tour de force of acting which also includes Vincent Cassel, Barbara Hershey, and Winona Ryder. A prominent ballet company out of Manhattan is about to open the new season with a performance of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake. Director and company owner Thomas Leroy (played by Vincent Cassel) wants a new take on the ballet so he's looking for something a bit different. He wants the characters of the white and black swan to be played by the same dancer. Nina Sayers is about to find out if she is going to be the lead but as the stress, both personal and professional, begin to weigh on her, she begins to wonder if her mother, her friends, or even a supernatural presence is thwarting her. A film bounced about a few times by your co-hosts, Black Swan makes it as an episode for discussion. With its strange and surreal visuals, a sexually charged performance by Mila Kunis, and Natalie Portman playing a mentally struggling person on the verge of breaking, the film continues to wow even if it seems to have been copied many times since. Listen to find out what Dark Discussions thinks of this modern classic. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM

NEW MOVIE ALERT! Who suffered for their art most this year in film? Natalie Portman as a sexually repressed, bullimic ballerina? Or Christian Bale as a crack-smoking, ex-boxing convict? Or BOTH? In an effort to make a dent in our ginormous pile of awards screeners, we watch both The Fighter and Black Swan! The discussion that follows includes much ado about Mark Wahlberg, Bale, Amy Adams, Melissa Leo and the 7 sisters! Plus, we expound upon the unraveling of Nina Sayers (figuratively and literally), awkward masturbation scenes, ballerinas making out, METAPHORS!!!!, Vincent Cassel's head, Winona Ryder going crazy and MORE. This episode is rated PG-13!
