Cage also served as a producer on the film through his Saturn Films production company. Longlegs was released in the United States by Neon on July 12, 2024. It received critical acclaim and grossed $108.9 million worldwide, becoming Neon's highest-grossing film to date domestically, as well as the highest-grossing independent film of the year.[5] In 1974 Oregon, a young girl with a Polaroid camera follows a mysterious voice and encounters an erratic man in pale makeup. In the 1990s, FBI agent Lee Harker, who exhibits possible clairvoyance, is assigned by her supervisor William Carter to a case involving a series of murder–suicides in Oregon. Each case involves a father killing his family and himself, leaving behind a letter with Satanic coding signed "Longlegs", whose handwriting belongs to none of the family members. Lee discovers that each family had a nine-year-old daughter born on the 14th of the month, the murders all occurred within six days before or after the birthday itself, and the murders form an occult triangle symbol on a calendar, with one date missing. While talking to her mother Ruth, Lee receives a coded birthday card from Longlegs, warning her that revealing the source of the code will lead to her mother's murder. Oddity is a 2024 Irish horror film[4] written and directed by Damian McCarthy. It follows a blind medium and curio shopkeeper who is still grieving the death of her twin sister a year prior when a wooden mannequin from her collection becomes crucial to her quest to uncover the truth about her sister's murder. The film premiered at South by Southwest on 8 March 2024, where it won the Audience Award in the Midnighter section of the festival. It was released in Ireland and the United Kingdom on 30 August 2024. Alone one night, Dani Odello-Timmis, the wife of psychiatrist Ted Timmis, is brutally murdered while renovating the couple's newly acquired country house. Olin Boole, one of Ted's former patients, visited Dani that evening, warning her that a stranger had infiltrated the home. Olin is ultimately convicted of the crime, and is later found murdered in his room in the psychiatric hospital. One year later, Dani's twin sister Darcy Odello, a blind clairvoyant with psychometric powers, is visited by Ted at her Cabinet of Curiosities shop in Cork, and the two make plans to visit again. Several days later, Darcy arrives unexpectedly at the country house where Ted now resides with his new girlfriend Yana, a pharmaceutical representative. Marvel Studios is truly going all-in on their only feature film this year, Deadpool & Wolverine. According to Variety, the studio plans to push for acknowledgment during awards season submitting for the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, Critics Choice, and even the Oscars. It's Hugh Jackman's performance as Wolverine that is driving this decision, as the studio plans to position the actor for the awards in the supporting actor category. Among other categories, the box office buster will likely find a spot in the Golden Globes' new category of Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. HBO released the first trailer for The Last of Us Season 2 last week. With the melancholy musical theme from Pearl Jam in the background, the trailer shows Joel and Ellie's past catching up to them five years after the events of season one. We also see a lot of new cast members including Danny Ramirez, Jeffrey Wright, and Catherine O'Hara. The Hollywood Reporter learned that DC Studios is developing a villains-centric movie centered around the characters Bane and Deathstroke. While no director has been selected yet, Captain America: Brave New World writer Matthew Orton is working on the script. On the hero side, a new animated film was greenlit and will be called Dynamic Duo - focusing on Dick Grayson and Jason Todd as the Robins in their early years. The feature film will use what's called Momo animation, a blend of CGI, stop-motion, and motion capture. Maggie Smith, the two-time Oscar and four-time Emmy winner best known for her work in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Harry Potter, and Downton Abbey has died. She was 89. Oscar nominee Tim Roth has become the latest high-profile name to join the cast of Netflix's Peaky Blinders movie and will join star Cillian Murphy as well as Rebecca Ferguson and Barry Keoghan. Variety has learned exclusively that Bill Hader and Duffy Boudreau are teaming up to develop a comedy pilot script at HBO. The official logline for the untitled project states, “A woman in a small town has a big secret revealed.” Hader and Boudreau will serve as co-writers and executive producers on the project. Previously, the two collaborated on HBO's Barry. Deadline has learned that Aaron Pierre and Stephan James have emerged as top choices to star alongside Kyle Chandler in Lanterns. The Wild Robot took the number one spot at the box office this weekend with a $35 million dollar opening. Netflix's Black Mirror has revealed the cast list for season 7 of the series which features newcomers, as well as cast returning for the USS Callister sequel episode. In Longlegs, Maika Monroe plays an FBI agent who must track down a serial killer, who might be played by Nicolas Cage. The movie also stars Blair Underwood and Alicia Witt. The word on the street was that Longlegs (2024) would be the "scariest movie of the year," but does it live up to the hype? We decided to check out Neon's new release for ourselves here at Spooky Tuesday, and we're ready to discuss whether those Silence of the Lambs comparisons are truly holding up. Is Maika Monroe's Lee Harker giving Clarice? Does Nic Cage's titular serial killer lean more Hannibal Lecter or Buffalo Bill? Last week we put the spotlight on Mia Goth for the release of MaXXXine, and now we've got Longlegs headliner Maika Monroe who is, hands down, one of the most exciting voices in the horror space right now — and has been for a decade.It Follows completely changed the game for Monroe in 2014. The David Robert Mitchell-written and directed film featured a brilliant concept that was expertly executed, putting the project on the path to becoming a modern horror classic. That wasn't the only 2014 release Monroe had that earned such high honors. She also starred in Simon Barrett and Adam Wingard's The Guest, yet another beloved film festival gem that went on to be hailed as top-tier horror by the masses. And Monroe has not stopped excelling in the genre since. She consistently works with directing visionaries with bold and ambitious ideas, ideas that give Monroe opportunities to push boundaries in horror storytelling and challenge herself as an actor in that space. Not only is her latest in that department a big winner in every respect on screen, but the quality of the work seems to be paying off significantly. Longlegs is already setting records for its distributor, Neon, and is poised to take in $14 - $17 million for its debut weekend.Monroe leads Longlegs as Lee Harker, a new FBI agent who finds herself working on an especially gruesome case.
