Weekly Spooky

Paranormal Activity, found footage horror, demonic hauntings, and the nightmare of being watched while you sleep take center stage in this episode of Cutting Deep into Horror, as Henrique Couto and Rachael Redolfi dig into the low-budget movie that turned a bedroom doorway, a static camera, and a few impossible noises into modern horror history. This week, Henrique and Rachael discuss Paranormal Activity, the 2007 found footage supernatural horror film written and directed by Oren Peli, starring Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat. The movie follows a couple who begin filming their home after a disturbing presence seems to become more active at night, and that simple setup helped turn the film into one of horror's biggest micro-budget success stories. AFI lists Oren Peli as director, writer, cinematographer, and editor, with Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat in the cast; Box Office Mojo lists the estimated budget at $15,000 and the worldwide gross at $193,355,933.Henrique and Rachael get into why Paranormal Activity still feels eerie, why its bedroom-camera setup works so well, and how the movie weaponizes waiting. This is not glossy haunted house horror. It is a movie about small sounds, weird behavior, relationship tension, and the terrifying idea that something may be standing in the room while you are asleep.Inside this episode:• Why Paranormal Activity became a found footage phenomenon — Henrique and Rachael talk about the film's perfect timing, its word-of-mouth power, and how its low-budget realism helped make it feel scarier than more polished studio horror.• Katie and Micah's relationship as horror fuel — The episode digs into the uneasy dynamic between Katie and Micah, including how Micah's ego, skepticism, and need to keep filming make the haunting feel more personal and more frustrating.• Less-is-more supernatural terror — From bedroom shadows to long silences, tiny movements, footsteps, doors, and nighttime dread, the conversation looks at how the film turns minimal effects into maximum tension.• The power of found footage believability — Henrique and Rachael compare Paranormal Activity to other found footage movies, including Cloverfield, while discussing why roughness, improvisation, and simplicity can make horror feel more immediate.• The ending and alternate endings — The episode covers the final escalation, Katie's possession, Micah's fate, the psychic's warning, and why the last image is so important to the film's impact.• Why the movie still matters — Whether you think it is terrifying, overhyped, or somewhere in between, Paranormal Activity helped reshape mainstream horror and proved that a scary idea, executed with discipline, could hit harder than a monster in full view.Where to watch Paranormal Activity in the U.S.:Currently, Paranormal Activity is listed as streaming on Paramount+, Paramount+ via Amazon Channel, and fuboTV. It is also listed for digital rental or purchase through Fandango at Home, Apple TV, and Amazon Video. Paramount+ also has an official movie page for the film.

Play Episode Listen Later May 25, 2026 14:09

“Actualmente, formamos a 233 jugadores.

This week, we are welcoming home the astronauts by playing songs written by the star man himself: David Bowie! What better way to celebrate our mission to the moon than by hearing other bands cover his varied tunes. The Thin White Duke was a rock n' roll chameleon who influenced music, film, and fashion for over 50 years. Considered one of the most influential artists of all time, he was the most underground mainstream artist, creating the blueprint for many to follow. Hope we freak you out and that ya dig! What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show, Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection: an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. Robert is forced to test his endurance and provide feedback, as he has no idea what he will be subjected to every week. Our hope is that we turn you on to something that was lost on your ears, or something you've simply forgotten about, or that (in our opinion) should have been the next big thing. Songs this week include: The Get Up Kids – “Sufragette City (David Bowie)” from Eudora (2001) Infectious Grooves – “Fame (David Bowie)” from Sarsippius' Ark (1993)  Small Town Titans – “Heroes (David Bowie)” from Heroes - Single (2026) Bauhaus – “Ziggy Stardust (David Bowie)” from Ziggy Stardust - Single (1982) Contraband – “Hang On To Yourself (David Bowie)” from Contraband (1991) DREAMCAR – “Moonage Daydream (David Bowie)” from Dream - EP (2024) Enuff Z'Nuff – “The Jene Genie (David Bowie)” from 10 (2000) Classless Act – “Starman (David Bowie)” from Classless Act Does Bowie - Single (2023) Saigon Kick – “Space Oddity (David Bowie)” from Water (1993) Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts! Marina Stabile is a Brazilian-born, Swiss-raised producer and line producer with over 20 years of experience in film, documentaries, commercials, and digital content. She is also one of my favorite humans and I'm lucky I get to call her a friend. She grew up in São Paulo, moved to Geneva at 10, attended an international school with 118 nationalities, and knew she wanted to produce after watching the Irving Thalberg Award presented at 3 a.m. on an Oscar broadcast. She studied film and international relations at USC, produced documentaries for the United Nations in Geneva, and returned to the U.S. to earn her MFA in producing at AFI, where her thesis film The Response won a Student BAFTA. Marina's credits span indie and studio, including Miguel Arteta's Beatriz at Dinner starring Salma Hayek, the Sundance Grand Jury Prize–winning Clemency starring Alfre Woodard, Harrison Ford's The Call of the Wild (as VFX supervisor), Searchlight's Hold Your Breath starring Sarah Paulson, The People We Hate at the Wedding, and the pandemic-shot Untitled Horror Movie alongside fellow producer Bronwyn Cornelius. Most recently, she produced Josephine — written and directed by Beth de Araújo and starring Channing Tatum and Gemma Chan — which won both the U.S. Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival before being acquired by Sumerian Pictures in a competitive seven-figure deal. The film went on to screen in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival. In this conversation, we explore how culture impacts your craft, define once and for all what line producers really do, why the best career moves sometimes look like steps backward, and whether Los Angeles is still a special place to make movies. Enjoy!! CG
