We've partnered with @TelecelGhanatv for a SPECIAL episode of Stay By Plan! “The goal is freedom. The goal is your own happiness. The goal is joy, and it's hard to have as much joy and lightness as you can if you're holding onto old resentments.” Simbi Hall, Storyteller, Screenwriter, Director, and Producer, sits down with Hoffman Podcast host Sadie Hannah to share her life journey of healing. While Simbi completed the Process in 2022, her journey of self-reflection began at the age of seven, when she had her own subscription to Psychology Today. From a young age, she tried to analyze things in her head and figure things out. Somewhere within her, she felt there was something she needed to address. For Simbi, one of the main transformations at the Process was the shift in her relationship with her father. Raised by her mom, her nana (technically her step-great-grandmother), and a dog “who helped raise” her, her father was absent. Simbi felt abandoned by him. She could count on her hands the number of times she's seen him in her life. As Simbi says, you idealize what you don't have. She grew to resent him and what she could never have. It's been “the homework of her life” to attempt to resolve the pain of her childhood. Her birthday is always right around Father's Day. Each year, this has been a big trigger for Simbi. This past year, just a few years after doing the Process, Simbi had a very different birthday experience. She discovered that she had let go of her deep resentment toward her father. Listen in as Simbi shares wisdom learned from doing the homework of a lifetime. Be sure to listen for Simbi's mic-drop moment at the end. More about Simbi Hall: Simbiat Hall is an award-winning Nigerian-American filmmaker who divides her time between LA and NYC. Born in Chicago and raised in Virginia, Simbi graduated from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts with a double major in film and dramatic writing. She is also a graduate of AFI's “Directing Workshop for Women” and the Bill Cosby-sponsored “Guy Hanks/Marvin Miller Screenwriting Fellowship at USC. Simbi is well-known for Long Story Short (2004), Bring It! Vegas Dreams and Disney Parks' Magical Christmas Celebration (2016). Follow Simbi on Instagram at @simbihall. Listen on Apple Podcasts As mentioned in this episode: Daily Buddhist Practice Buddha-nature Buddha-nature in Hoffman terms: The Spiritual Self, or the Light that's within you. This is the foundation from which growth can evolve. The Divine Mother Positive Legacy: While much of the work of the Hoffman Process involves disconnecting from negative parental patterns, we also receive a positive legacy from our parents. This is also addressed during the 7-day retreat. Black woman tropes/stereotypes – What is Transference? A couple of great quotes from Simbi: “If you're open and seeking, you can get guidance from a stop sign.” “If you don't do the work, life adds Miracle-Gro to the belief systems.”

The party dives headfirst into shenanigans, but Zechs quickly steers the mood in a serious direction—proposing to speak directly with Malar. Despite the risks, Galahad and Hoshino agree to help facilitate the meeting, ensuring safeguards are in place. The conversation with Malar is cryptic and frustrating, confirming more through evasion than answers. With no more straightforward path forward, Zechs severs the connection. They head toward the vineyard and soon stumble into a vision of Sloane's past—Zechs, Arguile, Salix, and Glad transported to the Second Age. There, they witness the growing tensions between the Pantheran Pantheon and Malar's cult and uncover that this temporal journey is meant to guide Zechs toward acceptance and closure.Meanwhile, in the present, the rest of the party learns more about Nymora's hidden leadership and plans defenses. Hoshino initiates a covert operation, while Shanks and Greyleaf interrogate a cult target, gathering key intelligence. Everyone then regroups at the inn and meets a new ally, Turk. While Zechs and his group witness Malar's avatar call for the Wild Hunt in the past, divine avatars arrive to oppose him in a chaotic battle. Afi later reveals that although Malar can be extracted, the aspect inside Zechs cannot be destroyed or contained—only managed. This adds emotional weight to Zechs as he must interrupt the ritual at his sacrifice site. In the present, Galahad incapacitates cultists preparing for the event, while Hoshino infiltrates the enemy to gather valuable intel from Five Shadow. As all groups reconvene, they plan for the night's ritual. Zechs, Galahad, Turk, and Glad perform the ritual, while the others keep watch. Enich, revealed as Arguile's alternate and a Paladin of Arioch, engages the team with chilling declarations of divine judgment. The ritual begins, sparking parallel battles inside Zechs' mind against Malar and outside against Enich. Both battles are intense. Malar summons wolves and fire, countered by coordinated efforts from Galahad, Turk, Zechs, and Glad. Zechs lands several divine-infused blows while Turk disrupts Malar's casting. Enich proves to be an overwhelming foe—casting powerful necrotic magic and holding off the team with resilient defenses and his Dread Lord ability. Salix is downed but revived, Shanks lands a critical blow with a poisoned arrow, and Greyleaf, Glad, and Zechs continue their assault. The tide turns when Galahad strikes Malar with Kana's Fury and ends the fight. As the group returns to consciousness, the battle with Enich continues. Despite his strength and spellwork, the full force of Collateral wears him down. Galahad batters him in a brutal exchange before Glad finishes him with Sacred Flame, finally ending the threat and offering the team a hard-earned, bittersweet victory. There's so much happening, and we pick up with arc 26, “Nymora to Nakoroa”. How will the rest of this story unfold? Find out next time on the Medusa's Cascade: Collateral Damage!

No one knows how to write TV shows OR songs anymore, apparently. (Lucky us) We're up to two white male protagonists in a new Star Wars movie?! The earth might spin off its axis!! I saw that new movie “Weapons” and have many thoughts, then Bokes, Mrs. Bokes, and I travel to Las Vegas to hang out with Billy Biohazard at the Punk Rock Museum. It was a glorious occasion that I spend way too much time talking about. (Can you believe it?) Finally, the eternal Los Angeles conundrum: “Rats or Mexicans?”

For more than three decades, AFI has been in a nearly constant state of reinvention. The band have made it a point to evolve with every album—sometimes dramatically so—never allowing themselves to become too comfortable in one genre or rest on any of their impressive career laurels. It's an approach that has grown their audience but also challenged it with a sonic identity that can shift in wild, unexpected directions. Now with their twelfth album, Silver Bleeds the Black Sun…, AFI are once again at the start of a bold new chapter, only this time they've even managed to surprise themselves. Holidays often mean we post a listicle...and so the Civic Holiday brings about our breakdown of the American Film Institute's greatest movies that DIDN'T make their 1998 or 2007 Top 100 lists. So there's no Citizen Kane, Godfather, Jaws action here. These are nominees that were shunned both times, such as Dog Day Afternoon, Ghostbusters, L.A. Confidential...and so many more. Bev listed her #100 down to #11 alphabetically while Ryan came up with categories in groups of 10. Then we each did a more thorough analysis of our Top 10 lists. So get cozy on this first Monday of August as the 679th edition of Have You Ever Seen highlights 100+ choices of outstanding American movies on this AFI's Not Quite 100 listicle. Well, Actually: Brad Pitt IS in 3 movies between our 2 lists, but one of them was just a tiny cameo in Being John Malkovich. Also, it appears that Martin Scorsese should not have been listed with the directors who have 3 movies on one or both of our lists (it's just 2). Also also, Sigourney Weaver WAS in an AFI movie, but her 3 seconds in Annie Hall was a cameo at the very end where you can barely tell it's her. Sparkplug Coffee? Why, they sponsor us. “War is hell.” (Seriously) Big update at Golds Gym Venice, get ready. The usual suspects are glad that Hulk Hogan is dead. (Here's a clue: “they're probably cat owners.”) AFI: WTF? (take 2) I saw Andre The Giant, and my mom once met…Richard Nixon and Dwight D Eisenhower?! (And other historical Allen revelations!) New aggravation just dropped: “someone” leaving their coffee cup on the filthy sink surface. I went to see Aliens in 70mm at the Egyptian with Gale Ann Hurd (the producer) doing q&A, and shit got wild.

It's Polish Brandon's birthday, and Ozzy Osbourne's death day. (God damn DEATH dedication…) More bands in 90s movies, and ruminations on Kim Basinger's bush. Ka-mara. Rebuffed by Arnold Schwarzenegger. “Movers.” AFI: WTF? Grant rant. A night out in Toluca Lake, and the impossibility for anyone in the greater Los Angeles area to not fuck up my hamburger.
In this episode of Shelf Life, Kevin and Rachel try to keep their sanity discussing the AFI top 100 film from 2002 Master of Disguise. A movie where Dana Carvey plays a spy? Send us a textThis one's a banger, folks. Lt Col Brandon Temple—Mustang, TACP legend, and card-carrying member of the “deep state”—joins the team room and brings the heat. From botching his shot at pro baseball to stumbling into the Air Force via a giant binder of mystery jobs, Temple's journey is pure chaos and grit. We dive into his Mustang days (yes, he enlisted first), Navy betrayal (yep, he crossed over), and what it was like sleeping bag spooning with a CCT in Afghanistan.Oh, and he's not just a warfighter—he's a legislative assassin now, influencing Capitol Hill and telling Congress what's up with AFSPECWAR. Add in some dark humor, Civil War accents, a napalm joke, and a love letter to Hunter Seven Foundation… and you've got an episode that's half roast, half reverent, and 100% Ones Ready.

Today on part two of our conversation on the Rarified Heir Podcast, this episode continues our conversation with Peter Rafelson, son of director and producer Bob Rafelson. Recorded the week after part one, this episode delves into some pretty heavy as well as some pretty of the wall stuff. And as you have heard on part one, it seems like that was par for the course in the Rafelson household in the 1960s and 1970s. As one of the leading figures in the American New Wave filmmakers, Bob Rafelson was responsible for producing or directing some classic, seminal films that influenced generations of film makers. It's quite a resume including films like The Postman Always Rings Twice, Head, The Last Picture Show, Easy Rider, The King of Marvin Gardens, Mountains of the Moon, a film we discuss at length, Stay Hungry as well as an unfortunately named anthology, Porn.com. Beginning with Davy Jones, we also discuss what each member of The Monkees was like off camera, how he spent the Summer of 1975 pumping iron with Arnold Schwarzenegger in Alabama, his role in the Alan Parker movie Fame, how the magazine Psychology Today saved his bacon growing up as a kid and everything in between. We discuss dyslexia, smoking pot with your teachers, trade school, working with his dad scoring a film and much more. So get ready for part two of our conversation with guest Peter Rafelson and learn what it was like having The Monkees instruments in his basement for years after the show ended its run. It's up next on part two of our conversation with the son of an Easy Rider or a Raging Bull. We're just not sure which one it was. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.

This week's pick comes courtesy of longtime VHS Strikes Back Patreon supporter Herb, who's chosen the delightfully oddball Aussie gem Malcolm from 1986. It's a film that proves even the quietest, most socially awkward tram enthusiast can have a life of crime tucked beneath his cardigans. With its quirky charm, deadpan humor, and a DIY spirit that would make MacGyver jealous, Malcolm is a criminal caper unlike any other—and it's all thanks to Herb's impeccable taste for the weird and wonderful.Directed by Nadia Tass and written by Tass and her husband David Parker, Malcolm was made on a modest budget but with no shortage of creative flair. Shot in Melbourne and using the city's trams as both setting and plot device, the film's charm stems from its inventive low-fi gadgetry and the offbeat chemistry between its leads. The character of Malcolm was inspired by real-life eccentric inventors, and much of the film's contraptions were built practically—no special effects, just good old-fashioned Aussie ingenuity. The movie was a critical darling in Australia, earning multiple AFI awards and cementing its place as a cult classic for fans of heartfelt oddities. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryMeet Malcolm—a painfully shy, tram-loving genius with a knack for building bizarre contraptions and no clue how to talk to people. But when he takes in a pair of dodgy housemates with a taste for petty crime, Malcolm's quiet life gets a serious jolt of adrenaline. With his mechanical wizardry and their criminal know-how, the trio cook up the most unconventional heists Melbourne has ever seen. Get ready for exploding milk carts, remote-controlled getaway cars, and one socially awkward hero who proves that crime really can be engineered!thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback
