Documentul are 35 de pagini. Are chitară.

After yesterday's episode about the unchosen 450 actors & actresses who were in fact nominated for the AFI's Top 100 Stars list, now it's time to begin a quest. I will review the films of MANY of the 180-ish folks who this podcast has never discussed. And since Eddie Cantor, Ann Sothern, George Murphy & the Nicholas Brothers are in Kid Millions and the Three Stooges are in Soup To Nuts, I'm knocking 5 names off the "must-cover" list in 1 double episode! This 715th show on Have You Ever Seen digs into the musical-comedy adventure about Cantor inheriting a lot of money (Kid), then it's time for a zany goof about romance & chowderhead firefighters (Nuts). So strap in to hear about these two B&W romps from the '30s as my quest to talk about the previously-unreviewed AFI acting nominees takes flight. Well, Actually: at around the 16-minute mark, the line should have been "these are white actors playing Muslim Africans", not "Muslim Americans". Subscribe! Then you can't miss out when I post shows like this on days other than Monday. Rate and review Have You Ever Seen as well. And I finally posted some new reviews on Letterboxd not long ago! Look for "RyanHYES". Contact me with your OWN thoughts about the films I discuss: "ryan-ellis" on Bluesky, "@moviefiend51" on Twi-x and you can email me at "haveyoueverseenpodcast@gmail.com".

Surprise! I didn't say during Monday's episode that I'd be posting 2 podcasts later in the same week, but here's the first one. Here I'm talking about the American Film Institute's Top 100 Stars list, which was really 50 stars (25 men, 25 women). Although their odd numbering method isn't really the point…and neither is their dumb criteria. No, this 714th Have You Ever Seen podcast is REALLY about the 450 people who were nominated, but didn't make the cut. My plan is to review as many of the 180-ish up-until-now-omitted actors & actresses as I possibly can in the months and years ahead. So if you ever wanted to hear a guy rattling off about 500 names, then this monologue about the AFI's Old-Timey Actors is your dream episode! Oh, and tune in again tomorrow when I begin this quest by talking about 2 B&W '30s comedies: Kid Millions and Soup To Nuts. As OB healthcare providers, we have several pieces of guidance regarding determination of amniotic fluid volume antepartum. The SMFM has Consult Series #46 (2018), which describes the management of polyhydramnios. We'll touch on that in this episode. However, while we have clear understanding of the increased risks of oligohydramnios, where an MVP is preferred for diagnosis over AFI, we have less information about polyhydramnios. But a new study published in BJOG (January 2026) provides more insights on this. While MVP is preferred for oligo diagnosis, can the same be said for polyhydramnios? Is there an increased risk in perinatal morbidity with polyhydramnios, and is that better detected by MVP or AFI? This new study findings left the authors unsatisfied although it CONFIRMED what we have covered in past episodes. Listen in for details.1. Dashe, Jodi S. et al. A woman who loves eggs but one day, she is haunted by an egg monster. What motivated you to make this film? My name is Bao and Eggsecution is a film born out of my love for eggs and eating eggs. My grandmother has always berated me for eating way too many eggs a human being could handle and often chided me for doing so, warning that one day i would gain an allergy from doing so. When i moved here to the states from Singapore, i was given free liberty to eat all the eggs i wanted since i was no longer living with my family. in that way, i was unleashed. But there was always a nagging feeling at the back of my head telling me that maybe theres some wrong in eating so many eggs a day. Hence, this film was born from that fear that was ingrained in me since young. And because  I love horror and genre so much, i decided to put a fun twist into both the visuals and story of this film.  From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film? The film roughly had a timeline of 6 to 8 months. Because of the support from American Film Institute., I was allowed access to shoot on 35mm film – the Panavision Millennium xl2, 3 perf and in addition, with the support and generous donation from Kodak, we shot on 50D celluloid film – which was an amazing opportunity. My facility head and mentors, Stephen Lighthill, Sandra Valde-Handsen and Sara Ross Samko were very supportive of the original pitch for my visual essay and we eventually had to tailor it down to smaller ideas and smaller spaces due to budgetary and location restraints. But i am still extremely proud of the team that managed to make this happen! Thank you for selecting Eggsecution as part of your line up in the Experimental Film Festival!  How would you describe your film in two words!? Disgusting and Delicious!  What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film? One of the biggest obstacles i faced was budgetary restraints. Because this film was self funded and i knew i was not working at that time, i had to save and set aside a workable budget for my film. Though equipment was provided by AFI, it was still a big project considering that i wanted to use SFX and practical effects and costume changes, along with the build of the monster in the film. My costume designer – Kai Burns and my SFX artist – Daniel Sukara were the MVPs, coming down to AFI to do countless tests to make sure the colours of the wigs, gooey, eggs and monsters were of the right shades of colour and effects could work seamlessly.  ---- Subscribe to the podcast: https://twitter.com/wildsoundpod https://www.instagram.com/wildsoundpod https://www.facebook.com/wildsoundpod

Happy New Year! The perfect way to end the year is with director John-Michael, or JM, Powell, and his genre thriller, VIOLENT ENDS (2025). In this episode, JM and I discuss the astonishingly moody cinematography -- the deer scene and a shootout will stay with you way after the film; his journey through film school and a grant that made this film possible, and his steady and sure approach to indie filmmaking. And let me add: VIOLENT ENDS is a perfect New Year's Eve film. Let the shootouts remain on the screen, grab a bottle of champagne, and welcome in the New Year with filmmaker JM Powell. In this episode, JM and I talk about:the incredible moody setting of VIOLENT ENDS and how setting portends to great filmmaking;how he got his start in filmmaking;whether you should go to film school;the story behind his first feature, THE SEND-OFF (2022);why he loves the Calgary International Film Festival;how he managed fatherhood and his advice for people having kids in the indie film space;the grant that made VIOLENT ENDS possible and his views on using film to shoot it (which was made impossible by a very mundane reason!);what people should expect to watch with VIOLENT ENDS;the moody cinematography, including whether the deer was real and more about the insane shootout scene near the end;how to handle both fantastic and negative reviews as a filmmaker;the vote of great actors on a particular project;what's next for him.JM's Indie Film Highlights: THE LAST STOP IN YUMA COUNTY (2023) dir. by Francis Galluppi; TOUCH ME (2025) dir. by Addison HeimannMemorable Quotes:"There's so many movies that take place in New York, but the good movies feel specific to that writer and that filmmaker.""I went to school in Dallas Fort Worth, so I think a lot of the people aspire to do like commercial work in Dallas.""I'm very much that personality where I'm...give me a problem and I'll figure out how to solve it.""Anywhere you can find yourself where you are orbiting and brushing up against story because story is everything.""You can create your own AFI community on YouTube.""In some ways, I think, micro budget, independent distribution is obsolete.""What matters to me more than shooting on film is capturing a good story.""I don't think most people are consuming film criticism. I think most film criticism, especially for cinephiles now lives on like Letterboxd...Rotten Tomatoes obviously, too, is a valuable asset. But these platforms cater to clickbait headlines and taglines that for better or worse...that has influenced our cinema discourse and our film criticism."Links:Follow JM On InstagramWatch VIOLENT ENDSSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/first-time-go/exclusive-content

In this special episode of the CineD FocusCheck Podcast, host Nino welcomes back filmmaker, educator, and author Tal Lazar for a wide-ranging conversation about what cinematography really is — and what it needs to become in an age of rapidly evolving technology. Tal's new book, Cinematography: Beyond Technique, challenges a long-standing assumption in filmmaking: that mastering cameras, lenses, and lighting is enough. Drawing on over 15 years of teaching at institutions such as AFI, Sundance, and FilmLab, Tal argues that cinematography lives in the space between intention and execution — not in technology itself. Together, Nino and Tal explore: Why great images don't automatically make great films How directors and cinematographers often talk past each other on set What blocking rehearsals reveal about hidden gaps in film education Why lenses, lighting, and framing are storytelling tools — not technical checklists And how AI forces filmmakers to re-examine creative intention, not just workflow The conversation also tackles one of today's most controversial topics: AI in filmmaking. Referencing recent statements by Roger Deakins and drawing parallels to the Canon 5D revolution, Tal explains why resisting new tools outright is rarely productive — but why giving up creative intention is far more dangerous. This episode is not about choosing sides between “traditional” and “modern” filmmaking. It's about understanding the language of images deeply enough to make deliberate, meaningful choices — regardless of the tools involved. Whether you're a director, cinematographer, producer, or educator, this episode offers a thoughtful, practical perspective on collaboration, visual storytelling, and the future of the craft. Chapters and Articles in This Episode (00:00:57) – Welcome & Introduction Nino welcomes viewers to the special episode and introduces Tal Lazar and the topic of his new book. (00:02:06) – Tal Lazar, Cinematography Beyond Technique & Teaching Background Tal's background as a filmmaker and educator and how the book grew out of 15 years of teaching. (00:05:35) – Visual Storytelling, “The Reading,” and Cinematic Intention Using painting and visual examples to explain how audiences identify story and main characters. (00:09:02) – What Makes a Great Cinematographer Technical skill, clarity of intention, communication, and common misunderstandings on set. (00:14:13) – Directors, DPs, and Collaboration on Set Blocking rehearsals, overlapping responsibilities, and why collaboration improves films. (00:20:45) – How Directors and Cinematographers Should Communicate What productive creative conversations sound like versus ineffective ones. (00:25:31) – Lighting and Lenses as Storytelling Tools Lighting as observation and language; lenses, perspective, intimacy, and emotional distance. (00:38:19) – AI, Roger Deakins, and Creative Intention AI as a tool versus a threat, and what reactions reveal about how cinematography is understood. (00:49:45) – Lessons from the Canon 5D Era & the Future of AI Parallels between past camera revolutions and today's AI-driven changes. Shane Black (Lethal Weapon, The Nice Guys)  Jim Herzfeld (Meet The Parents/Fockers), Fred Dekker (Preditor), & David Silverman (The Simpsons) reminisce about their college hangout that became the social group that supported their life and art for the rest of their lives.  They describe a house full of UCLA film nerds with a 24 hour open house policy.  It was young guys finding themselves and their drive and their fun by making a scene in the early 1980's. Movie watching, game playing, movie making, and joking around led to a group of people that has made some of the biggest films of the last 30 years.  Bio: JIM HERZFELD is an American film and television screenwriter who has also done work as a television producer. Herzfeld graduated from UCLA's School of Theater, Film and Television (TFT) and his earliest TV credit – on the ground breaking “It's Garry Shandling's Show” -- was followed by almost 10 years of writing and producing episodes on dozens of sitcom staffs, including the Fox TV classic "Married... With Children." Herzfeld's earliest feature film work was a writing credit on the cult comedy “Tapeheads“ in 1988. His most successful work was writing the screenplay for the 2000 film” Meet the Parents” as well as writing the story and screenplay for its 2004 sequel “Meet the Fockers.” To date, both those films remain on the list of the 20 Highest Grossest Comedies. More recently, in 2015 his screenplay for “Meet the Parents” was selected by the Writer's Guild of America's as one of the “101 Funniest Screenplays” of all time. Herzfeld was also the writer of the canceled Circle 7 Animation version of Toy Story 3 and has done countless punch-up and rewrites on dozens of big budget comedies and animated films for virtually every major studio.  Herzfeld has also guest lectured about screenwriting at several major universities, including NYU, UCLA and AFI along with appearing on writer panels at various film festivals, most notably the Austin Film Festival where Jim was a judge for their Comedy Screenplay Competition. Currently, Herzfeld continues to write and develop comedy screenplays and recently became an advisor for Scripthop, a software startup focused on revolutionizing how screenplays are both presented and circulated throughout the entertainment industry. FRED DEKKER - Pursuing a movie career, he moved to Los Angeles where his fledgling screenwriting efforts led to a Hollywood agent and a job writing Godzilla: King of the Monsters for director Steve Miner. Although the film went unproduced, Dekker provided the story for Miner's 1985 horror-comedy House, starring William Katt (screenplay by Ethan Wiley). The film was recognized by the Fantasporto and the Avoriaz Film Festivals, and spawned several sequels. Dekker made his directorial debut with Night of the Creeps, an homage to B-movies that eventually developed a devoted cult following. He went on to direct another cult favorite, The Monster Squad, co-written with his UCLA friend Shane Black. He subsequently wrote five episodes of Tales From The Crypt, including the first episode, directed by Robert Zemeckis. In 1991, Dekker conceived the Denzel Washington starrer Ricochet and the spy spoof If Looks Could Kill, both for Warner Bros. He then returned to the director's chair for the third RoboCop film, co-written with comic book legend Frank Miller. As a script doctor, Dekker made uncredited contributions to films including Titan A.E. and Lethal Weapon 4. He then served as Consulting Producer and wrote three episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise. In 2015, he reteamed with Shane Black on a western TV pilot for Amazon Studios, entitled Edge. The two went on to co-write the 2018 release The Predator, which Black also directed. Dekker's international awards include the Silver Raven from the Brussels International Festival of Fantasy Film; the Estrella de Fantastico Award from the 2019 Bilbao Fantasy Film Festival; and the 2024 Honorary Time Machine Award (Premi Màquina del Temps) at the Sitges Film Festival for his contributions to horror and fantasy cinema. He is currently developing a true crime limited series for Amazon based on a murder which occurred in his hometown.SHANE BLACK is a writer/director whose writing credits include such films as Lethal Weapon, The Last Boy Scout, The Long Kiss Goodnight and The Monster Squad.  He began as a director in 2005 with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and receives increasingly strident sequel requests for 2016's The Nice Guys.  He is currently writing a spec original and trying to lose some weight by New Years'.  Not that he's fat -- he's just old, and being careful.DAVID SILVERMAN After graduating from UCLA in 1983, David Silverman worked as a freelance illustrator and animator until, in 1987, he landed a job animating on The Tracey Ullman Show — where The Simpsons began. Animating on all 48 shorts led to David directing the first shows of The Simpsons. Starting with the Christmas Special in December 1989, and then the premiere episode the following month, David soon became Supervising Animation Director and a producer on The Simpsons. All told, he has directed 24 episodes and has won 4 Emmys along the way.  When no one was looking, David snuck away from The Simpsons to work at DreamWorks (The Road to El Dorado – co-director), Pixar (Monsters, Inc. – co-director), and Blue Sky (Ice Age, Robots – writing and boarding). But, he came back to the show full-time at the end of 2003 and directed The Simpsons Movie. In 2012, David directed and co-wrote the short film The Longest Daycare about Maggie Simpson, which earned him an Academy Award nomination. And since the Disney acquisition of The Simpsons (via the purchase of Fox), David has directed 10 Simpsons shorts especially for Disney+, as well as several promotional pieces.Editing Notes: There are many verbal cuts on the show we directed to Dan. Also after the show, Shane Black emailed and ask we cut out this.  I say “It's nice your place was a rape free environment” and Shane says something like: “But not rape free for guys,”. He wants his comment cut.

It's been a big first week of December with no less than five sets of critics groups announcing winners and nominations as we kick off the next three months of nonstop awards season. On episode 318 I am joined by AwardsWatch Executive Editor Ryan McQuade and Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello to break down the awards landscape and more. Before we get into that we have to talk about the other huge piece of news this week and that was yesterday's announcement that Netflix had won the battle to buy Warner Bros and all of its properties, which includes the DC Universe films and HBO/HBO Max. Unsurprisingly, there is no one on the podcast thinks this move is a good idea and sees the Netflix model as intentionally destructive of the theatrical model. Next we move the Critics Choice Awards nominations, announced this morning, where Sinners and One Battle After Another lead the way, where Sentimental Value and Hamnet made comebacks and where Wicked: For Good faltered. Then it's onto the AFI and NBR lists, the New York Film Critics and the Gotham Awards, where Sophia gives her in the room insight of the event. Welcome back to Stories from the River. Today we continue our journey behind the scenes of the Ashley's 'Right to Win' Product Knowledge Boot Camp that was held at the Pineville Flagship Store this October. This time, Heather Greenwood, Broad River's Director of People sits across from Kaylee Kirchner, Ashley's AFI trainer. To start, Kirchner's love and dedication to her craft shine through the episode as she enthusiastically describes what she most enjoys about these trainings (spoiler alert: it's everything!). In all seriousness, Kirchner reveals the origin of the boot camp program, how it came to be, and why it's called "boot camp", its evolution through the years, and her personal experience with it.  She also highlights the passion and drive she found inside Broad River Retail during both 2025 boot camp trainings. She celebrates the unique culture she notices every time she's here and reflects on how Memory Makers experience the training - with a desire to learn, improve, and elevate their product knowledge beyond expectations. Greenwood and Kirchner truly connect to one another this episode, exchanging success stories from the bootcamp, and light bulb moments of increased confidence amongst the Memory Makers, and the consistent emphasis on improving personal growth and knowledge about Ashley Furniture's competitive advantage. Enjoy this incredibly delightful episode, and if you're ever interested on becoming a Memory Maker, listen in to some behind the scenes advice from an absolute professional in the industry.   This episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/qrxV5jsdv68    Visit https://www.storiesfromtheriver.com for more episodes.   Broad River Retail brought this show to you. Is this a gym, or a dance studio? Thanksgiving and the whipped cream embargo. I'm not into this new AFI album, but everybody else apparently is. Landman Season 2 is upon us, and I finally caught that "American Primeval" series on Netflix. If you really want to get into the spirit of these new modern western series, you should flagellate yourself while you watch them. I went to see The Thing and pissed 115x. I shot a .357 Magnum and fell in love, and I went to see Roger Deakins speak at a screening of a gorgeous movie he shot, and then promptly made an ass of myself in front of one of my favorite directors. Quentin Tarantino shit talks Paul Dano, and Mel Gibson has an ugly black British wife for no conceivable reason in "Fat Man." (Yep, you guessed it – Netflix!)

Tobias Datum: creating the sci-fi world of Murderbot

The Cinematography Podcast Episode 331: Tobias Datum Murderbot is the story of a security unit, part-human and part-machine, that has hacked its governing module to act in its own free will: mainly to be left alone to watch TV shows. Cinematographer Tobias Datum views the Apple TV+ series as a visual exploration of a synthetic being's journey toward humanity and self-discovery. Tobias worked closely with show creator and director Paul Weitz, continuing a collaboration that spans over ten years with Paul and his brother, Chris Weitz. The production team included production designer Susan Chan, VFX supervisor Sean Falden, and colorist Tim Vincent. As a cohesive group that had worked together before, they were instrumental in establishing the show's distinctive visual identity. Working with the team, Tobias set the visual tone during pre-production to ensure a smooth, consistent flow throughout the shoot. He faced the challenge of lighting and shooting a cohesive environment that spanned multiple, drastically different settings. Murderbot takes place on an alien planet, on space ships and space stations, and in Murderbot's own head as it watches its favorite galactic soap opera, Sanctuary Moon. For the alien planet, the goal was to ground the setting in a believable, "earthly reality" where human life could exist, all while adhering to the production's budget and schedule. A volume stage was extensively used for scenes shot inside the ships, space stations, and for the stylized Sanctuary Moon segments. Exterior planet scenes were shot on location at a sand quarry pit in Ontario, Canada. A large, two-story exterior set for the habitat was constructed there, while the habitat's interiors were built on a separate soundstage. The diverse settings of Murderbot presented unique lighting issues. Fortunately, the design of the planet was grounded in reality, so Tobias lit for a desert planet with minimal vegetation. He used a translight as a backdrop and integrated practical lighting directly into the sets. The main habitat, designed as a translucent bubble with many windows, required careful management of its natural glow. Tobias used negative fill to strategically tone down the intensity. Dr. Mensa, the human leader of the group, acts as an anchor for the story's emotional stakes. To maintain narrative focus, Tobias consistently lit and framed her with clarity, regardless of her position relative to the other characters. At first, he was concerned that lighting the Murderbot character would be problematic, especially when it wears its highly reflective helmet. “Murderbot's a mirror ball, you know,” he explains. “So that meant lighting is going to be visible, and you don't want every shot to be a VFX shot. Once I saw the very first stage of that suit, I was like, ugh. But then when we started doing tests, it's kind of forgiving. I don't think we had a lot of equipment removal from Murderbot's helmet.” Tobias's journey began at film school in Berlin before he was accepted into AFI as a graduate student. There, he began building his portfolio while working on his colleagues' films. He credits a strong work ethic—constantly taking jobs and learning through experience—with his success as a director of photography. He reflects on his career with gratitude. “It's a great privilege and we're getting paid for this stuff. It's like every time I walk on a set, I'm just like, am I lucky. This is a great way to make a living.” See Murderbot on AppleTV.
