When the first teaser for “Passenger” was released, we were immediately impressed by its standalone scene featuring two guys, a pitstop, and the terrifying apparition they encounter on the road. But did the full-length film live up to this trailer? Tune in to hear our thoughts on the scenes that delivered some truly unique scares, the plot points that fell short, and of course that cameo by Oscar winner, Melissa Leo.

This week the BGH crew hits the open road with the aggressively mediocre horror film “Passenger”. We discuss the hobo code, jump scares, the logic leaps, the "van life" cliches, and the very Buhguul-like demon. Plus, Obsession has a record breaking week two at the box office, and we dip our toes into the online mythos behind “Backrooms”, ahead of next week's release.  A few weeks into their van life adventure, a young couple witnesses a horrific accident that leaves the driver dead. Soon they're being pursued by a demonic stalker who's impossible to outrun and follows them wherever they go. Passenger is an upcoming American supernatural horror film directed by André Øvredal and written by T.W. Burgess and Zachary Donohue. The film stars Jacob Scipio, Lou Llobell, and Melissa Leo. Take a trip with us down a dark road as we fight off car sickness on New Movie Monday. We are reviewing the latest horror release from Paramount Pictures, Passenger. We first reviewed this hyped up trailer months ago and now that Passenger has finally arrived, is it worth the ride? Griffey, Heath and Sam make the most of this bad trip by talking yahts, the looming shadow of AI over mid movies, why it would have been better as found footage and, of course, the most messed up moment in the movie. Synopsis: After a young couple witnesses a gruesome highway accident, they soon realize they did not leave the crash scene alone, as a demonic presence called the Passenger won't stop until it claims them both. It had been a dream of Todd's to make a boxing movie, and he knew The Fighter was the one as soon as it came across his desk, but the process from script to screen wasn't an easy one. There were multiple cast and director changes, and the original studio pulled out of the project. But the challenges were blessings in disguise as they allowed director David O. Filmmaker Marco Calvani talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about “High Tide” his feature film debut that stars Marco Pigossi (Lourenço) as a Brazilian undocumented immigrant adrift Provincetown in the late summer. The film is about a young man coping after a break up & left adrift in Ptown with his travel visa running out. Lourenço then meets Maurice a Black American & a romance evolves. Though Maurice's comes with a circle of friends he's is also quite aware he's the minority in a predominantly white queer tourist mecca. Pigossi gives a haunting performance steeped in melancholy & raw pain but delivers moments of openness, optimism & joy with an affective portrait of the depths LGBTQ men experience seeking meaningful connections. As the summer season fades & with his unexpected romance with Maurice together the two reconcile the pasts they've left behind & pursue their uncertain futures. The film distributed by Strand Releasing premiered at South by Southwest & was released in NYC earlier this month followed by an expansion to Los Angeles & will begin a run at Waters Edge Cinema in Provincetown & Coolidge Corner Theater in Brookline, MA on Friday November 1st. The stellar cast also includes James Bland as Maurice, Marisa Tomei as Miriam, Bill Irwin as Scott, Sean Mahon as Bob, Mya Taylor as Crystal, Bryan Batt as Todd, Todd Flaherty as Leslie, Karl Gregory as BJ & João Santos as Dimo with a haunting score by Sebastian Plano.  Marco Calvani is an Italian playwright, director, filmmaker, translator & actor. Trained as an actor since he was a teenager Calvani made his debut as a playwright in 2002 with Quasi commissioned by the European Social Forum. Prior to his first feature film High Tide which had its world premiere at SXSW in March 2024 he wrote & directed the short film The View from Up Here starring Melissa Leo & Leïla Bekhti based on his eponymous play originally commissioned by The Actors Studio & directed by Estelle Parsons. As of 2020 Marco  is in a relationship with Brazilian actor Marco Pigossi. LISTEN: 600+ LGBTQ Chats @OUTTAKE VOICES

Episode 27: Denis Villenueve x Jake Gyllenhaal collaborations with Manny Plaza- Fernandez

On the twenty- seventh episode of ATFT, director/ 1st AC Manny Plaza- Fernandez joins me in discussing the collaborations between Denis Villeneuve and Jake Gyllenhaal… more specifically, the films Enemy (2013) and Prisoners (2013). This episode is spoiler filled with a few expletives. The two collaborations between director Denis Villeneuve and actor Jake Gyllenhaal were released in 2013. Enemy may have been made first but Prisoners was released first. Villeneuve regarded Enemy as his “practice film” as it was his first English- language film. Even though both Prisoners and Enemy are collaborations between Villeneuve and Gyllenhaal, they are very different films. Enemy is more of an art film that sparks seemingly infinite interpretations. Gyllenhaal carries that film as he plays two characters and besides him, there are very few other characters in the film. Prisoners, on the other hand, is a crime thriller with an ensemble cast that includes, aside from Gyllenhaal, Hugh Jackman, Viola Davis, Paul Dano, and Melissa Leo. While Prisoners is a film that also requires analysis, it is more straight- forward than Enemy. Both films are brilliant and do share similarities in from technical aspects. These two films prove that Villeneuve and Gyllenhaal are excellent, underrated collaborators who will hopefully continue to work together in the future.  This is Manny's first appearance on ATFT! Manny and I met on the set of the upcoming short film, Time Will Tell, last November. There was only one production day in November before resuming in February but after striking up a conversation on that one day in November, it was clear Manny was incredibly knowledgeable about film. He was one of the first people on the crew I befriended and, after telling him a little bit about my podcast, he definitely wanted to make a guest appearance. Ever since, we talked about a few potential topic ideas and this topic proved to be a great first episode. This episode was recorded on August 7, 2024.  Manny is an Orlando- based 1st AC who has been working in the film industry for three years. He has just recently added the “director” title to his name! Manny's directorial debut, the horror short film titled The Autopsy, is expected to premiere this September at OIF! Be sure you keep listening until the end of the episode to learn more about The Autopsy, his first experience in the director's chair, and when you can expect to watch this film! In this episode, Manny and I analyze both Enemy and Prisoners while (mostly) focusing on the direction of Villeneuve and Gyllenhaal's brilliant and sometimes incredibly subtle acting choices. Manny also shares how he became a fan of Jake Gyllenhaal, his interpretation of Enemy (including the symbolism behind the spiders), and why he says Prisoners captures and evokes every emotion. It's a fun week of crime and comedy, mystery and drama on BEHIND THE LENS as we take a look at two new films – THE CLEAN UP CREW with director JON KEEYES and CHARLIE TANGO with writer/director SIMON BOISVERT. First up, my exclusive interview with director JON KEEYES going in-depth into THE CLEAN UP CREW, a terrific crime comedy that boasts some incredible performances, most notably a balls-to-the-wall comedic turn by Melissa Leo and a scene-stealing Antonio Banderas, not to mention fun and action at every turn. Listen as Jon and I go into detail on the cinematography and editing choices, costuming and color, casting, score, and more! What excited me about speaking with Jon is his own sense of humor and joy as he talks about the film, something that comes through loud and clear on screen. Then writer/director SIMON BOISVERT joins us discussing his new twisty thriller CHARLIE TANGO. An intriguing tale that appears to be one thing, but thanks to Simon's storytelling skill and craftsmanship, turns on a dime and shifts our focus to the real meat of the story, delivering yet another surprise. As you will hear, it's an interesting journey bringing CHARLIE TANGO to life as Simon took two different stories, neither which was sufficient in length to make a feature film, and melded them into one to arrive at CHARLIE TANGO. A big element of the film is Simon's attention to visual detail which he breaks down for us along with the challenges he faced for some scenes while finding tone and tension within the editing process. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 8 of the Director Watch Podcast, they are joined by AwardsWatch Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson discuss the next film in their Denis Villeneuve series, Prisoners (2013). After breaking through on the festival circuit in America with Incendies, as well as receiving an Oscar nomination for Best International Feature, Villeneuve took some time off riding the success of his acclaimed film. He returned to cinemas in 2013, directing his first Hollywood studio project, Prisoners, a story involving the search for two missing young girls in Pennsylvania. Focusing on two perspectives, one being the father of one of the missing girls (Hugh Jackman) and the detective trying to solve the case (Jake Gyllenhaal), this bleak mystery thriller was a surprise hit back in 2013, as well as considered by many of his fans to be Villeneuve's best. In this episode, Ryan, Jay and Erik break down the symbolism shown throughout the film (SNAKES, PUZZLES), Jackman and Gyllenhaal's performances, Paul Dano's punchable face, Melissa Leo's wig, Roger Deakin's cinematography, the film's ridiculous logic, and if it is a David Fincher knockoff. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 1h35m. Producer Todd Lieberman, who has just launched new production company Hidden Pictures, recounts the making of one of the most iconic and lauded boxing movies of all time. Melissa Leo's acting style is a combination of gut instincts and a compulsive need to ask questions. It's a style that already earned her an Oscar and continual employment, but also keeps her from falling into the trap of business-as-usual. Melissa and Marc talk about her performances in movies like Frozen River The Fighter and the new film Body Brokers, how she played a character not unlike Mitzi Shore for the series I'm Dying Up Here, and what is the one type of part she refuses to play, even though she gets offers to play it over and over again.
