Producer Todd Lieberman, founder of production company Hidden Pictures, recounts the making of one of the most iconic and lauded boxing movies of all time. It had been a dream of Todd's to make a boxing movie, and he knew The Fighter was the one as soon as it came across his desk, but the process from script to screen wasn't an easy one. There were multiple cast and director changes, and the original studio pulled out of the project. But the challenges were blessings in disguise as they allowed director David O. Russell the freedom to bring his trademark dark humor to the film, and actors Christian Bale, Mark Wahlberg, Melissa Leo, and Amy Adams to fully embody their characters. Hosted on Acast. On the twenty- seventh episode of ATFT, director/ 1st AC Manny Plaza- Fernandez joins me in discussing the collaborations between Denis Villeneuve and Jake Gyllenhaal… more specifically, the films Enemy (2013) and Prisoners (2013). This episode is spoiler filled with a few expletives. The two collaborations between director Denis Villeneuve and actor Jake Gyllenhaal were released in 2013. Enemy may have been made first but Prisoners was released first. Villeneuve regarded Enemy as his “practice film” as it was his first English- language film. Even though both Prisoners and Enemy are collaborations between Villeneuve and Gyllenhaal, they are very different films. Enemy is more of an art film that sparks seemingly infinite interpretations. Gyllenhaal carries that film as he plays two characters and besides him, there are very few other characters in the film. Prisoners, on the other hand, is a crime thriller with an ensemble cast that includes, aside from Gyllenhaal, Hugh Jackman, Viola Davis, Paul Dano, and Melissa Leo. While Prisoners is a film that also requires analysis, it is more straight- forward than Enemy. Both films are brilliant and do share similarities in from technical aspects. These two films prove that Villeneuve and Gyllenhaal are excellent, underrated collaborators who will hopefully continue to work together in the future. This is Manny's first appearance on ATFT! Manny and I met on the set of the upcoming short film, Time Will Tell, last November. There was only one production day in November before resuming in February but after striking up a conversation on that one day in November, it was clear Manny was incredibly knowledgeable about film. He was one of the first people on the crew I befriended and, after telling him a little bit about my podcast, he definitely wanted to make a guest appearance. Ever since, we talked about a few potential topic ideas and this topic proved to be a great first episode. This episode was recorded on August 7, 2024. Manny is an Orlando- based 1st AC who has been working in the film industry for three years. He has just recently added the “director” title to his name! Manny's directorial debut, the horror short film titled The Autopsy, is expected to premiere this September at OIF! Be sure you keep listening until the end of the episode to learn more about The Autopsy, his first experience in the director's chair, and when you can expect to watch this film! In this episode, Manny and I analyze both Enemy and Prisoners while (mostly) focusing on the direction of Villeneuve and Gyllenhaal's brilliant and sometimes incredibly subtle acting choices. Manny also shares how he became a fan of Jake Gyllenhaal, his interpretation of Enemy (including the symbolism behind the spiders), and why he says Prisoners captures and evokes every emotion. It's a fun week of crime and comedy, mystery and drama on BEHIND THE LENS as we take a look at two new films – THE CLEAN UP CREW with director JON KEEYES and CHARLIE TANGO with writer/director SIMON BOISVERT. First up, my exclusive interview with director JON KEEYES going in-depth into THE CLEAN UP CREW, a terrific crime comedy that boasts some incredible performances, most notably a balls-to-the-wall comedic turn by Melissa Leo and a scene-stealing Antonio Banderas, not to mention fun and action at every turn. Listen as Jon and I go into detail on the cinematography and editing choices, costuming and color, casting, score, and more! What excited me about speaking with Jon is his own sense of humor and joy as he talks about the film, something that comes through loud and clear on screen. Then writer/director SIMON BOISVERT joins us discussing his new twisty thriller CHARLIE TANGO. An intriguing tale that appears to be one thing, but thanks to Simon's storytelling skill and craftsmanship, turns on a dime and shifts our focus to the real meat of the story, delivering yet another surprise. As you will hear, it's an interesting journey bringing CHARLIE TANGO to life as Simon took two different stories, neither which was sufficient in length to make a feature film, and melded them into one to arrive at CHARLIE TANGO. A big element of the film is Simon's attention to visual detail which he breaks down for us along with the challenges he faced for some scenes while finding tone and tension within the editing process. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

It's Awards Season yet again. Here on the Holmes Movies Podcast that means, it is time for the Alternative Oscars episodes! AKA the Anders and Adam-emy Awards: Each episode for this series we pick a different year in Oscars history and attempt to correct the record, stripping the undeserving of their garlands while recognizing those who were cruelly overlooked. This time, we will be casting our eye back to… the 83rd Academy Awards, the year that honoured the best films of 2010. It was held February 11th 2011 at the Kodak Theatre. Tom Hooper's The King's Speech was nominated for 12 Academy Awards and won 4, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor in a leading role. It was also the second year in a row where the Oscars were being hosted by two hosts. It wasn't Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin who hosted the previous year, but it was Anne Hathaway and James Franco who had the honour to host the event together. This was a way to bring in the young crowd and boost the ratings up. Given the negative responses the ceremony got, they did not do such a good job with Anne Hathaway doing much of the heavy lifting. The night was also memorable for Melissa Leo dropping a surprise F-bomb, a first for an Oscars event.Subscribe/Follow and check out the rest of the podcast!Listen to and check out all the episodes we recommended to each other during the Covid Lockdown here on Letterboxd. Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 8 of the Director Watch Podcast, they are joined by AwardsWatch Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson discuss the next film in their Denis Villeneuve series, Prisoners (2013). After breaking through on the festival circuit in America with Incendies, as well as receiving an Oscar nomination for Best International Feature, Villeneuve took some time off riding the success of his acclaimed film. He returned to cinemas in 2013, directing his first Hollywood studio project, Prisoners, a story involving the search for two missing young girls in Pennsylvania. Focusing on two perspectives, one being the father of one of the missing girls (Hugh Jackman) and the detective trying to solve the case (Jake Gyllenhaal), this bleak mystery thriller was a surprise hit back in 2013, as well as considered by many of his fans to be Villeneuve's best. In this episode, Ryan, Jay and Erik break down the symbolism shown throughout the film (SNAKES, PUZZLES), Jackman and Gyllenhaal's performances, Paul Dano's punchable face, Melissa Leo's wig, Roger Deakin's cinematography, the film's ridiculous logic, and if it is a David Fincher knockoff. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 1h35m. The guys will be back next week to continue their Denis Villeneuve series with a look at Enemy. You can stream Enemy on Cinemax on Demand as well as rent via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. Sadia Azmat (stand-up comedian, writer and comedy producer) and Al Horner (Script Apart podcast, Empire Magazine) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Sadia's choice The Fighter. The Fighter is a 2010 biographical sports film directed by David O. Russell and based on professional boxers (and half-brothers) Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg) and Dicky Eklund (Christian Bale). The film was inspired by the 1995 HBO documentary High on Crack Street: Lost Lives in Lowell, that features the Eklund-Ward family. It also stars Amy Adams as Micky's girlfriend Charlene and Melissa Leo as Alice Eklund-Ward (winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress). Bale's incredible performance as the crack addict Dicky also won him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar, managing to bring humanity and humour to the former boxer struggling with addiction. While The Fighter doesn't necessarily follow the sports film formula it still packs a punch as a character focussed drama with Bale giving a standout performance. High recommendability and engagement scores give The Fighter a highly recommended overall score of 4.21. We circle back in this bonus episode to more apocalyptic or apocalypse-adjacent content given the success of Knock at the Cabin and The Last of Us with a film that is unlike any other from its director: Red State. Wake Up Heavy's Mark Begley is subjected once again to a film that may define conventional genre labels but works in spite of that.Starring Michael Parks as a Fred Phelps-type pastor, it follows his family as they wreck havoc on the small Midwestern town they occupy, culiminating in a Waco-like assault on their compound. Jul 19, 2020 On this episode of The Claw's Corner - Host Rich Cyr chats with actor P.J. Baker. P.J.'s Bio from IMDB: P.J. Byrne A graduate of Boston College with a double major in finance and theatre and an M.F.A. in Acting from the prestigious Theatre School at DePaul University, actor P.J. Byrne has compiled a long list of impressive film and television credits. Byrne stars alongside Dwayne Johnson to save the world from global catastrophe in the action film Rampage loosely based on the video game of the same name. He can also be seen in 15:17 Train to Paris which marks the second time Byrne has worked with Oscar Award winning director Clint Eastwood. Byrne's latest movie is Green Book for director and writer Peter Farrelly. Green Book tells the story of a working-class Italian-American bouncer who becomes the driver for an African-American classical pianist on a tour of venues through the 1960s American South and stars Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali. In 2014, Byrne starred alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street for director Martin Scorsese and proceed to team up again with the famed director in 2016 on Vinyl for HBO. Incredibly well versed in drama, comedy and science fiction/fantasy work, Byrne is one of the stars of the upcoming SyFy Channel series Temors, which also stars Kevin Bacon. Tremors is a television reboot of the film of the same name in which a small town is gripped with fear over giant underground worms living beneath them. In the film Byrne's character meets one of the more unusual demises ever in the series of sci-fi horror films. Byrne's television credits include the fan favorite role of Irv Smiff, the driven sports agent, who represents a number of professional football players in the ongoing BET hit series The Game. Byrne is also adding writer to his resume having recently sold Brothers of the Bride to Newline, a feature film that he will co-write and star in which is being produced by Ben Stiller's Red Hour Productions. Producer Todd Lieberman, who has just launched new production company Hidden Pictures, recounts the making of one of the most iconic and lauded boxing movies of all time.

It's a style that already earned her an Oscar and continual employment, but also keeps her from falling into the trap of business-as-usual. Melissa and Marc talk about her performances in movies like Frozen River The Fighter and the new film Body Brokers, how she played a character not unlike Mitzi Shore for the series I'm Dying Up Here, and what is the one type of part she refuses to play, even though she gets offers to play it over and over again.
