Another fun-filled episode of Nerds Talking! is here, and Lafayette and Carlos are back behind the mic bringing the perfect mix of pop culture, laughs, and nerdy debates. This week, the crew dives deep into the latest entertainment news, kicking things off with a spoiler-light review of Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, the highly anticipated third installment in Rian Johnson's hit murder-mystery franchise. With Daniel Craig returning as the unforgettable Benoit Blanc, the film delivers an eerie, brain-twisting case involving a seemingly impossible murder at a church in upstate New York. The discussion highlights standout performances from a stacked ensemble cast including Josh O'Connor, Glenn Close, Mila Kunis, Josh Brolin, and more, as well as how this chapter compares to the previous Knives Out films and what it adds to the evolving legacy of the series. But it wouldn't be Nerds Talking without going delightfully off the rails. The conversation takes a hilarious (and surprisingly important) turn as the fellas tackle a real-world question that should have an obvious answer: Do you wash your hands after using the urinal? Spoiler alert—you absolutely should, and the crew explains why, with plenty of humor and zero shame. From murder mysteries and movie magic to life lessons you didn't know you needed, this episode is packed with laughs, memories, and sharp nerdy insights. Tune in, turn it up, and let Lafayette and Carlos put a smile on your face. This week, we review the third film in the whodunnit series of Benoit Blanc mysteries: Wake Up Dead Man. After Knives Out and Glass Onion, director Rian Johnson returns to the reins of his favorite genre. We discuss the franchise's increasingly charismatic roster of secondary protagonists, the year of Josh O'Connor, and whether or not Johnson's penchant for heavy-handed topicality once again derails a Benoit Blanc tale.

"Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery" had its world premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, where it received just as strong reviews as the first two entries in the franchise, "Knives Out" and "Glass Onion," with praise directed at Rian Johnson's direction, writing, and the performances of the cast. Johnson, along with members of the cast and crew, were all kind enough to spend some time speaking with Next Best Picture over the past few weeks, and you can listen to those conversations below. First, we have my interview with Rian Johnson and Josh O'Connor, followed by Dan Bayer's interview with Johnson and Benoit Blanc himself, Daniel Craig. Then we have Cody Dericks's interview with Academy Award-nominee and on-screen legend Glenn Close, followed by my chat with Mila Kunis and Cailee Spaeny, then Brendan Hodges's discussion with cinematographer Steve Yedlin, and finally my interview with composer Nathan Johnson. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now available to stream on Netflix, and is up for your consideration for this year's Academy Awards in all eligible categories. Thank you, and enjoy! The Netflix whodunit "Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery" is the third movie in filmmaker Rian Johnson's tongue-in-cheek series featuring Daniel Craig as private detective Benoit Blanc. This time out, a young priest played by Josh O'Connor is accused of murdering a charismatic monsignor. The all-star cast includes Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner and Kerry Washington. They're all obviously having fun and O'Connor, in particular, is excellent. But this mildly engaging mystery is overlong and really stretches credibility. Still, "Wake Up Dead Man" is more than entertaining enough to keep you awake. The wildly original horror satire "Dust Bunny" plays like a midnight movie for the junior high set. A little girl named Aurora, sharply played by Sophie Slone, is haunted by a giant carnivorous dust bunny under her bed. After it has eaten her parents, she hires a neighbor, played by Mads Mikkelsen to dispatch it. It turns out that resident in apartment 5B is actually a hired killer, an associate of a handler played by Sigourney Weaver. The art direction and off-kilter humor are very imaginative, but "Dust Bunny" doesn't quite clean up as it tries to stick the landing. The Amazon Prime holiday rom-com "Merv" is one shaggy dog of a movie...and that has nothing to do with the fact that it's about a canine. Zooey Deschanel and Charlie Cox play an estranged couple who share custody of a scruffy pooch who's depressed by their separation, Their efforts to cheer him up mostly fail but rekindle their romantic spark. "Merv" is well meaning, but as artificial as an aluminum Christmas tree.

“I just want to be perfect.” Join Ian & Megs for our 308th episode as we step into the mirror-lined, razor-edged, emotionally fraught world of Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan (2010). Lace up your shoes, crack your knuckles, and prepare to descend into obsession, duality, and tutu-level trauma. This week we discuss: Natalie Portman's extraordinary, Oscar-winning transformation — fragile ingénue, ruthless perfectionist, and fractured psyche in one. Mila Kunis as the effortless chaos to Nina's claustrophobic control — real threat or manifested paranoia? Aronofsky's visual language: reflections, doubles, textures, and body horror. How does he trap the audience inside Nina's deteriorating mind? The film's depiction of artistic pressure and perfectionism — when does ambition turn pathological? What other film could we not stop referencing whilst watching this film Megs questions the ballet accuracy (and the wildly inaccurate bits) — including the culture, the training, and the psychological toll Ian asks if the film does a good enough job educating the audience about ballet to make the film accessible We talk about how Black Swan functions as a companion piece to The Wrestler — obsession as both craft and self-destruction. The boundaries between reality and hallucination — when does the film stop being literal? Or was it metaphor all along? We examine the film's treatment of sexuality, identity, and agency through the lens of duality: White Swan vs. Black Swan, innocence vs. corruption, submission vs. liberation. The final performance — triumphant, tragic, transcendent? We unpack the film's unforgettable ending. And finally, whether Black Swan is the Best Film Ever — or simply one of the most hypnotic psychological thrillers of the 21st century. Travis Hopson reviews Rian Johnson's WAKE UP DEAD MAN: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY starring Daniel Craig, Josh O'Connor, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Jeremy Renner, Glenn Close, Cailee Spaeny, Mila Kunis, Daryl McCormack, and Thomas Haden Church.SYNOPSIS: Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) returns for his most dangerous case yet in the third and darkest chapter of Rian Johnson's murder mystery opus. When young priest Jud Duplenticy (Josh O'Connor) is sent to assist charismatic firebrand Monsignor Jefferson Wicks (Josh Brolin), it's clear that all is not well in the pews. Wicks's modest-but-devoted flock includes devout church lady Martha Delacroix (Glenn Close), circumspect groundskeeper Samson Holt (Thomas Haden Church), tightly-wound lawyer Vera Draven, Esq. (Kerry Washington), aspiring politician Cy Draven (Daryl McCormack), town doctor Nat Sharp (Jeremy Renner), best-selling author Lee Ross (Andrew Scott), and concert cellist Simone Vivane (Cailee Spaeny). Rian Johnson & Daniel Craig have returned to deliver us their third Knives Out Mystery. Wake Up Dead Man has now dropped in select theaters worldwide, and will drop on Netflix on December 12. I'm very lucky to be ten minutes away from a local cinema that plays all of Netflix's releases before they drop on the platform, so you bet I rushed out to see the new whodunnit on the first day of release. The first Knives Out is easily my favorite murder-mystery of all-time, and Glass Onion was definitely a really solid follow-up even if it was a little uneven. More importantly though, I think Benoit Blanc, played by Daniel Craig, has to be on the Mount Rushmore of most iconic new movie characters of the past decade; in fact, I think Craig is so good in the role that Blanc is now dangerously close to overtaking Bond as his most iconic character. I know, I know... sue me. Rian Johnson is also one of my favorite filmmakers and he never misses! So, is Wake Up Dead Man the most engrossing mystery the team have delivered yet? Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 125 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys discuss the final film in their Hughes Brothers series, The Book of Ell (2010). In their final collaboration as an artist pair, the Hughes Brothers take a dive into the end of the world, action genre where a man is roaming from town to town, searching for the haven of humanities last chance for hope within a broken country, where water is a privilege and knowledge is a weapon. In a making a film about the hunt for the last bible on Earth, the brothers tackle the rotten core of our humanity when faced up against each other, and the lust for power something as simple as a book can bring out of people. This plus it's just a cool idea for an action movie where Denzel Washington is being the best movie star on the planet and Gary Oldman is doing his villain thing that he does so well. But the real question with The Book of Eli is, why isn't it an all timer, why does it look the way it does, and why was this the last film the Hughes Brothers made together? Ryan and Jay breakdown all these questions, as well as look at the careers of Washington, Oldman, and Mila Kunis, what they learned from this series, what the Hughes Brothers are doing now, give their series rankings for the sibling duo, and preview their next director series. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h22m. The guys will be back next week to begin their new series on the films of Claire Denis with a review of her film, Chocolate. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. Justin Timberlake BioSnap a weekly updated Biography.Justin Timberlake is once again in the spotlight and not just for his music. As the European leg of his Forget Tomorrow World Tour ramps up, with a scheduled performance at Manchester's Co-op Live arena on November 8, fans are flocking for remaining tickets. The show boasts a setlist loaded with nearly thirty hits, including Cry Me a River, SexyBack, and Mirrors, and the venue is throwing an official Noughties afterparty to keep the nostalgia alive. Timberlake's ability to electrify the stage remains unrivaled, cementing his place as one of pop's enduring titans after more than two decades leading NSYNC and his own multiplatinum solo career.Away from the stage, Timberlake is making business moves. The acclaimed Twelve Thirty Club restaurant, launched with restaurateur Sam Fox in Nashville, is expanding to Austin in early 2026, landing a prime spot in the city's bustling downtown, as confirmed by the Austin Business Journal and MySA. His ventures have always blurred the lines between music, film, and hospitality, signaling Timberlake's ongoing relevance not just as an entertainer but as a brand. But behind the scenes, Timberlake is reportedly focused on healing and introspection. According to AOL, he is taking a temporary break from certain industry commitments to prioritize his personal health. This follows a period of career turbulence in Hollywood, with sources telling Star and Reality Tea that Timberlake is “desperate to revive” his acting trajectory after cooling off since Palmer. Rather than taking humbler roles, Timberlake is said to be “thinking big,” reaching out to some major former collaborators like David Fincher and Mila Kunis as he aims to recapture blockbuster success. Insiders warn though, the road back won't be easy—audiences will demand compelling performances, not just nostalgia.Socially, Timberlake made quiet headlines on Globe for expressing continued support and sympathy for Britney Spears, as her struggles and family drama remain tabloid fodder. While not a direct public appearance, this show of solidarity is seen by some as a meaningful gesture given their shared pop history.Meanwhile, Timberlake's legacy and influence are celebrated everywhere—from upcoming candlelight tribute concerts in Tampa honoring his catalog, to viral TikTok and YouTube shorts resurfacing his classics like SexyBack and Holy Grail, to a new audio biography episode streaming this week. For all the speculation on where Timberlake goes from here, his position in the pop culture pantheon seems secure. Whether rebounding in film, branching into businesses, or returning to the stage, Timberlake remains a headline—one seemingly determined to remind everyone he's still somebody worth watching.Get the best deals https://amzn.to/3ODvOtaThis content was created in partnership and with the help of Artificial Intelligence AI

The penultimate horror film in Have You Ever Seen's 10th Annual Scary Movie Month was a blockbuster and an Oscar-winner. And that's unusual for the relentless and unsubtle director Darren Aronofsky. He isn't often rewarded so much for the chances he takes. This 693rd episode talks about how the intense Black Swan is women-centric, even as the women in it go through hell. Natalie Portman won Best Actress for playing a lonely ballet dancer who was deluded even before the movie started. Then after she gets the lead role in Swan Lake, she shows us levels of masochism, obsession and deep mental illness. Real versus imagined. Mila Kunis, Barbara Hershey and Vincent Cassell hit some home runs too, with Hersey eating it up as Portman's possessive and abusive mother. So put on your feathers and get ready for an episode all about the sordid and dangerous world of ballet. Well, Actually: Mother! wasn't a complete failure at the box office and Noah didn't do THAT badly worldwide. Be a sweet girl (or a sweet boy) and write a review of this or any other HYES episode. Rate it too (5 stars!). And subscribe to the show. The email address is "haveyoueverseenpodcast@gmail.com". The socials are “@moviefiend51” on the T and “ryan-ellis” on the B. If you spend time on Letterboxd, look for me as "RyanHYES". I tend to focus on modern movies (contrasting the M-O of this podcast) and will probably do a lot more reviewing there in mid-November and beyond.
