Tune in as Marie Nicola (Alt.Pop.Repeat and Past//Forward) jumps back onto 2CC for a plunge into Trance, the 2013 neo-noir thriller about the twisty-turny journey of hypnotherapy that an art auctioneer undergoes in order to figure out where a lost painting went in the midst of a heist. The roots that this mindbender has in a British TV movie from 2001, casting doubt on the supposed efficacy of hypnotism, the major role that Goya's artwork plays in Trance's symbolism, and the shaved pubes of it all emerge as a few talking points for this episode.Directed by Danny Boyle, Trance stars James McAvoy, Rosario Dawson, Vincent Cassel, Danny Sapani, Matt Cross, Wahab Sheikh, Tuppence Middleton, Mark Poltimore, Simon Kunz, Michael Schaeffer, Tony Jayawardena, and Vincent Montuel.Spoilers start at 33:40James McAvoy on Trance, Hypnosis, and Pubic HairRosario Dawson Calls Her Vagina “the General”Trance 2013 OSTAnatomy of a Scene: ‘Trance'Create your podcast today! #madeonzencastrHere's how you can learn more about Palestine and IsraelHere's how you can keep up-to-date on this genocideHere's how you can send eSIM cards to Palestinians in order to help them stay connected onlineGood Word:• Marie: cooling cloths, cooling sprays, and Fumang Propitious Mango ice cream• Arthur: The GorgeReach out at email2centscritic@yahoo.com if you want to recommend things to watch and read, share anecdotes, or just say hello!Be sure to subscribe, rate, and review on iTunes or any of your preferred podcasting platforms!Follow Arthur on Twitter, Goodpods, StoryGraph, Letterboxd, and TikTok: @arthur_ant18Follow Arthur on Bluesky: @arthur-ant18Follow the podcast on Twitter: @two_centscriticFollow the podcast on Instagram: @twocentscriticpodFollow Arthur on GoodreadsCheck out 2 Cents Critic Linktree
OCEAN'S ELEVEN was a monster hit, and so naturally Steven Soderbergh made a sequel. An extremely normal sequel that didn't confuse or piss off almost everyone who saw it. We present our Ocean's Trilogy review!Ocean's is a series of heist films. Beginning with the 1960 Rat Pack film Ocean's 11, the series has seen mixed to favorable critical reception and substantial commercial success. After the 1960 film, a reboot trilogy was released from 2001 to 2007, often cited as defining its genre and leading to a proliferation and commercialization of heist films throughout the world. The most commercially successful was the first film, Ocean's Eleven (2001). It established the ensemble cast of George Clooney as Danny Ocean, Matt Damon as Linus Caldwell, and Brad Pitt as Rusty Ryan. A long list of supporting cast members maintain the trilogy. The first sequel, Ocean's Twelve, was released in 2004, with the final film, Ocean's Thirteen, following in 2007. An all-female spin-off titled Ocean's 8 was released in 2018.Ocean's Eleven is a 2001 American heist comedy film directed by Steven Soderbergh and written by Ted Griffin. A remake of the 1960 film of the same name, it serves as the first installment in the Ocean's franchise. The film features an ensemble cast including George Clooney, Matt Damon, Andy García, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Casey Affleck, Don Cheadle, Scott Caan, Elliott Gould, Bernie Mac, and Carl Reiner. Its plot follows Danny Ocean, a recently paroled con artist who orchestrates a complex scheme to simultaneously rob the vaults of three major Las Vegas casinos owned by Terry Benedict, the current partner of Ocean's ex-wife, Tess.Ocean's Twelve is a 2004 American heist comedy film directed by Steven Soderbergh and written by George Nolfi. This week, we travel back to the shadowy underworld of post-revolutionary France with The Emperor of Paris (2018), a gritty historical crime drama that combines lavish period detail with pulpy intrigue and one of France's most infamous figures—Eugène-François Vidocq.Directed by Jean-François Richet (Mesrine), The Emperor of Paris stars Vincent Cassel as Vidocq, a real-life criminal turned detective who forged a remarkable path from the depths of prison to become the head of France's first modern detective agency. This cinematic retelling dramatizes his journey as he battles both the criminal underworld he once ruled and the powerful institutions that mistrust his redemption. The film excels in its production design, immersing viewers in the dank alleys, foggy courtyards, and grand salons of Napoleonic Paris. The costumes, sets, and atmosphere evoke an oppressive, corrupt society where everyone's wearing a mask—metaphorically, if not literally.Cassel brings gravitas and grit to the role of Vidocq, portraying him not as a clean-cut hero but a deeply flawed, resourceful survivor—a man at constant war with his past and those who'd rather see him dead than reformed. Why It Stands OutVincent Cassel is magnetic as ever, anchoring the film with intensity and quiet menace. The action sequences—knife fights in narrow passageways, rooftop chases, and prison breaks—are shot with stylish energy. It explores themes of identity, reputation, and redemption, questioning whether a man can ever truly escape his past.A Dad's TakeIf you like your period dramas with more grime than gloss, The Emperor of Paris delivers. It's a fascinating look at a real historical figure who straddled both sides of the law. Think Les Misérables with less singing and more stabbing. Not quite a family watch—but definitely one for fans of moody, slow-burn crime epics.
A film about racial tensions, police violence and disaffected youth? And this might be dated, you say? OK, probably not, but join us anyway as we talk about one of France's most well-respected films, why it's funnier than you'd imagine, and its breakout star Vincent Cassel. Vse to brbota nekje v ozadju Karsheve zasebne zgodbe.

Sean and Amanda briefly react to some Oscars news, including a rule requiring Academy members to watch the movies and the details surrounding the new Casting and Achievement in Stunt Design award (1:34). Then, for the first time, they play the Summer Movie Preview Game, in which they predict the box office and Metacritic score for every major summer movie release in 2025 (16:27). Later, Sean is joined by Adam Nayman to give a brief “state of the movies” before discussing David Cronenberg's newest body horror film, ‘The Shrouds.' They talk about its complicated and moving portrayal of grief, praise Vincent Cassel for his excellent performance, and create a “Cronenberg starter pack” for those who aren't very familiar with the director's filmography (1:25:06). Finally, Sean is joined by the great David Cronenberg to discuss ‘The Shrouds.' They talk about his decision to cast Cassel in an unusual and challenging role, why he hates shooting on film and would never return, and his long-term creative collaboration with composer Howard Shore (2:06:43). Get access to this entire episode as well as all of our premium episodes and bonus content by becoming a Hit Factory Patron for just $5/month.David Cronenberg returns to the big screen this week with The Shrouds, perhaps his most autobiographical film to date. The film involves grieving tech entrepreneur Karsh (played brilliantly by Vincent Cassel) who has developed the means to surveil the dead in their tombs, including his recently deceased wife. After a series of grave defacements in the cemetery plot he owns, and in which his wife is buried, Karsh ventures down a rabbit hole of conspiracies technological, geopolitical, and psychosexual seeking answers in an increasingly indeterminate reality. We attempt to unpack this rich text with an examination of Cronenberg's perspectives on our hypermediated present, and how the constant hum of "connectedness" becomes an impedement to our ability to process our own traumas. Then, we explore the films labyrinthine narrative, weaving an intricate - a deliberately unresolvable - web of various plots, evoking the derealization of our interconnected age of information overload. Finally, we explore the films nuanced, mature eroticism, and illuminate why Cronenberg is the master of making non-cinematic sex feel simultaneously trenchant and deeply arousing. The Roxie theater in San Francisco is still seeking funds to help buy their building! We can feel ourselves rotting on a brand new episode of Cinema Smorgasbord Sells Out covering Cronenberg's latest - and perhaps most personal - work THE SHROUDS from 2024. Vincent Cassel stars as Karsh, a businessman who has developed a technology called a shroud, which allows people to view the corpses of their loved ones after they have been buried. After a targeted attack of his graveyard (including the grave of his late wife), Karsh - with the help of his late wife's sister and her ex-husband - starts to investigate the motivation behind the attack. It's dark, oppressive, oddly funny and awfully odd, but is it great? Let's discuss! The post Episode 268 – Cinema Smorgasbord Sells Out – The Shrouds (2024) first appeared on Cinema Smorgasbord.

That night, it's a neat double feature of THE CRIMSON RIVERS mystery adventure films starring Jean Reno. Is the first film Mathieu Kassovitz's single best films to date (if not Vincent Cassel's best role)? Why does Luc Besson's sequel fall rather flat? What fanbase will the original film definitely appeal to? All that as well as detail on the Kino Lorber blu-ray and newer TV show version. This week we're excited to present an archival conversation from 2011 at the 49th New York Film Festival with the makers of the Main Slate selection A Dangerous Method: director David Cronenberg, screenwriter Christopher Hampton, producer Jeremy Thomas, and lead actor Michael Fassbender. Cronenberg returns to the New York Film Festival this Fall with the NYFF62 Main Slate selection The Shrouds starring Vincent Cassel and Diane Kruger. Don't miss the U.S. Premiere of The Shrouds and many more great films by securing your Pass to NYFF62 today at filmlinc.org/passes. From acclaimed director David Cronenberg came A Dangerous Method, a dark tale of sexual and intellectual discovery featuring two of the greatest minds of the 20th century. Carl Jung (played by Michael Fassbender) has just begun his psychiatric career, having been inspired by the great Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen). When a mysterious and beautiful woman (Keira Knightley) goes under Jung's care, Jung finds himself crossing the line of the doctor/patient relationship, causing great conflict with his mentor and making Jung question his own morality in the process. The conversation was moderated by Scott Foundas.
Our 2010 retrospective continues with our penultimate review of Darren Aronofsky's psychological horror film "Black Swan" starring Natalie Portman, Vincent Cassel, Mila Kunis, Barbara Hershey & Winona Ryder. Acting as almost a companion piece with Aronofsky's previous film, "The Wrestler" (2008), the film examines the demands of perfection, the physical and emotional toll it takes on us, and the repression Nina experiences from her overbearing mother. It was a success at the box office, with critics, and during awards season, winning Natalie Portman the Academy Award for Best Actress. How does it hold up today? Join Josh Parham, Alyssa Christian, Dan Bayer, and me as we discuss our thoughts on the performances, writing, direction, cinematography, sound work, its awards season run, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review.
