This week, I talk with Emma Dues about her stunningly creepy debut thriller Return to Midnight! We dive into the inspo for the book, how teaching affects her writing, and the mystery inherent to Victorian mansions.Return to Midnight SynopsisNearly ten years ago, five Ohio university students were murdered in an off-campus Victorian home. The media dubbed it the Midnight House Massacre. Ever since, survivor and novelist Margot Davis has wanted to forget it, and never again utter the killer's name. Until she's compelled to write her side of the story. To do that, she's returning to Midnight House. It'll be a chance for Margot to reconnect with other survivors, heal the trauma, and dispel the ugly conspiracy theories of obsessed true crime fanatics. But when news of Margot's book gets out, she receives a threatening note that demands she stop lying. Or else. It chills Margot's blood. Because she hasn't been telling the whole truth. As the threats continue, each more sinister than the last, a journalist comes to Margot with new suspicions about that brutal October night. Now, to save her own life, Margot must reveal her well-guarded secrets—ones that, for good reason, she's been too terrified to share.

Oh, and she's a rabid Buffalo Bills fan recording the episode just hours before her team kicked off against Nick's beloved Kansas City Chiefs. They may have made a bet during the show. Join Bill's UHP Network Today http://UHPnetwork.mn.co SummaryIn this episode, Bill and Chris discuss the misconceptions and limitations of certain diagnoses, such as scoliosis and hypermobility. They emphasize that these conditions can often be understood within the framework of normal variations in structure and movement. They highlight the importance of understanding the rules and principles that govern human movement and avoiding overly reductionist perspectives. The conversation also touches on the adaptations seen in ballerinas and gymnasts, as well as the role of bony adaptations in performance. The conversation explores the idea that exceptions to rules in the human body may not actually be exceptions, but rather a result of an incomplete model or interpretation. They discuss how certain measurements and diagnoses can change rapidly with simple interventions, challenging the traditional understanding of structural adaptations. They emphasize the importance of questioning and curiosity in the field of physical therapy, and the need to constantly seek new information and perspectives. The conversation concludes with a lighthearted discussion about favorite breakfast cereals. Keywords#scoliosis, #hypermobility, #physicaltherapy, diagnoses, structure, movement, adaptations, rules, principles, ballerinas, gymnasts, #bonyadaptations, performance, exceptions, rules, human body, measurements, diagnoses, #structuraladaptations, questioning, curiosity, , information, perspectives, breakfast cerealsTakeawaysMany diagnoses, such as scoliosis and hypermobility, can be understood within the framework of normal variations in structure and movement. It is important to understand the rules and principles that govern human movement and avoid overly reductionist perspectives.Adaptations seen in ballerinas and gymnasts are often intentional and specific to their performance requirements.Bony adaptations can play a role in performance and may allow for extreme ranges of motion. The key is to have a comprehensive understanding of the individual's structure and movement patterns to guide interventions effectively. Featuring: Lydia Abarça, Sheila Rohan, Marcia Sells, Karlya Shelton, and Khadija Tariyan (daughter of Gayle McKinney Griffith) In conversation with Shelly Power, The Dr. Carolyn Newsom Executive Director, Philadelphia Ballet Karen Valby's The Swans of Harlem tells the remarkable and-until now-rarely written about true story of the Dance Theatre of Harlem, a trailblazing troupe of Black men and women who performed some of ballet's most iconic works for the such audiences as the Queen of England, the White House, and Stevie Wonder. This history focuses on five foundational members of the group and their enduring bond, including Lydia Abarça, the first Black prima ballerina with a major international dance company, the first Black ballerina on the cover of Dance magazine, and an Essence cover star; and her equally accomplished friends, Gayle McKinney, Sheila Rohan, Marcia Sells, and Karlya Shelton. Valby is a frequent contributor to Vanity Fair, and has also published work in The New York Times, O Magazine, Glamour, Fast Company, and EW, where she spent fifteen years writing about culture. Shelly Power brings to Philadelphia Ballet, formerly Pennsylvania Ballet, her experiences in various artistic and executive leadership roles at Prix de Lausanne in Switzerland and Houston Ballet Academy. Since joining Philadelphia Ballet in 2018, Ms. Power has restructured the organization's administrative functions with new, innovative partnerships, with the goal of promoting that ballet is for everyone. Ms. Power received a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies, with a focus on business, psychology, and fine arts from the University of Houston. She furthered her education at Rice University's Leadership Institute for Non-Profit Executives and Case Western Reserve University's Weatherhead School of Management's Advanced Certification in Non-Profit Management. Hi,Thank you for listening. Think of someone who might like it and please, spread the word. Here's the blog that goes along with the newsletter.Written, narrated, and enginneered by,Jill BadonskyThe Script :I've always identified with Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale, the ugly duckling story… maybe that's why I don't eat duck or why I should. I wasn't exactly a swan born in a family of ducks, I was more like say, a penguin or a frog floating by on a lily pad. Point is, I didn't belong with ducks especially deeply conservative ducks, not that there's anything wrong with that, but I wasn't, which made it a bit lonely.  I don't think I'm alone in feeling lonely for this reason .When you feel you don't belong in your family, a strange thing happens because you've been imprinted with a I don't-belong kind of radar because not belonging feels familiar so you may find yourself subconsciously gravitating toward places to feel you don't belong because we like the familiar.   Speaking of…  A few years ago, I thought about taking a hip-hop dance class.   My background is in ballet, but for some strange reason, I love hip hop music.     There was a class close by at a place called Culture shock.  Signed up, got some shoes, and, I changed my mind. Yeah, too much of a … culture shock. I'm thinking there will be kids jumping and spinning and executing complicated choreography all in sequence and I have problems with the Macarena among friends  Hiphop would mean I'd feel klutzy, embarrassed, and possibly in need of hospitalization.   So …  back to the Stairmaster with the penguins   The hip hop desire didn't want to go away though. But every time I thought about going, I imagined people lots younger than me with caps on backward, pants half-mast saying, “yo  “Yo.” I was overthinking it… I thought, so one day I just went. When I got there, there were a bunch of young people with backward caps and pants half-mast, including the teacher.  But soccer moms and white college girls were there as well.  There was a woman at least five years older than me and another one in the first row, two moves behind everyone, so I thought yo, maybe I have a chance of fitting in.    Then I looked in the mirror…  Everyone else's head in the class ended at my shoulders.   In other words, I was in a troupe of stocky, shorter people, because hip-hop works best and looks best when you're short and stocky. In the mirror's reflection, at 5'9” my head looked like a giraffe in a jungle picture where the giraffe's its head is awkwardly sticking up above the rest of the herd, and I thought… I'm in the wrong herd, I don't fit in.  Or do I? The woman next to me looked up at me with a look on her face that said, “No, you don't fit in”. I thought… I should go. But I stayed, despite the hip hugger mishap. I forgot was wearing waist high big girl panties and hip huggers.  I looked in the mirror and two inches of pink underwear were sticking out of the top of my hip black dance pants.    I turned pink too, I'm not sure why… but I left them that way.  They were like a billboard that said, I SHOULDN'T BE HERE.Then, Miss Trina Lyons entered the room. Miss Trina Lyons was the hip-hop teacher who moved like a movie queen in the most self-confident style of breathtaking, beat-perfect-precision hip-hop I ever knew possible. She started leading a dance move where the herd was turning in a circle with arms in a stiff gangsta-tude swing.  In the mirror I saw that my ‘tude looked a lot like Marsha Brady with PMS.  I cracked a smile and one second later, Miss Trina announced to the class, “I Support the show Upcoming art and creativity programs www.themuseisin.com

Zibby speaks to Paris-based author Rachel Kapelke-Dale about The Ingenue, an exhilarating new suspense novel about a former piano prodigy who returns to her hometown for her mother's funeral and discovers her massive family estate will be given to someone else. Rachel talks about her journey to becoming a writer, from Brown University to a Ph.D. in London to life in Paris, and the themes she enjoyed exploring in her book–mother-daughter relationships, real estate, and the darkness in her protagonist. She also talks about her earlier book, The Ballerinas (inspired by her own career in ballet and, of course, Judy Blume), and the book she is working on now (hint: it's a Yale equestrian mystery).
