Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, this psychological horror stars Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates, who owns a motel along with his mother. Without too much screen time and based on dialogue and reactions from Norman, mother is a controlling influence in his life. Her influence makes Norman the sinister presence he is thoughout the movie. Hitchcock tells an interesting story overlaying element of a heist with horror and conveys a timeless twist that highlights identity and the effects of trauma. James Delbourgo, professor of history at Rutgers University and author of A Noble Madness: the Dark Side of Collecting from Antiquity to Now, talks about: Why he's written about contemporary art so extensively, as a history academic who's very interested in the present, going to galleries and wondering who collectors are right now, raising a lot of questions about archetypes for what would become a big part of his book; how collectors can not only be defined as powerful, they can also be defined as weak, unhinged and deranged, among other things; how the profile of the collector, over time, is more a corkscrew than an arc, with the Freudian view of the collector was seen as repressed and even dangerous, whereas the contemporary collector is seen as being more about power; how in Robert Bloch's book "Psycho," upon which the movie was based, the Norman Bates character is actually described as a collector but one who is ugly and unprepossessing, and how the Hitchcock film turned him into a charming, ingratiating figure who turns the audience on his side; how really thoroughly experiencing housed collections (prime examples are the Hearst Castle in San Simeon, CA, and    the Vittoriale degli Italiani in Gardone, owned by Gabrielle d'Anunzio) was embedded in his writing the book; the collector as puppeteer, as orchestrator (and collector) of people, as William Randolph Hearst was; how encountering someone's place, and their things, is "a physical experience that constitutes the way you understand this person and your relationship to them," as James put it; and how Freudian interpretation has had such a lasting relevance over the years, even as it's gone out of fashion. In the 2nd half of our conversation, available to Patreon Supporters of the podcast, you'll hear James talk about: How hoarding, like the Middle Ages, has waned, and is tossed around far too lazily; the 'l' word, as in "loser," which he used to describe Robert Bloch's Norman Bates, whom he qualifies as a 'lovable loser,' particularly because collectors like Bates collect authentically, out of passion, not for financial gains; how he couldn't quite get the marketing department to change the subtitle of his book (particularly "The Dark Side" part), and why he's interested in authentic collectors, those who collect for love, with no thoughts of profits or strategy, the type of collector who he believes is vindicated in the end, as opposed to the Charles Foster Kane-type collector, who collects to accumulate; the democratization of collecting, including 'garbologists,' in which everything can, and does, get commodified; countercultural collectors, who collect things like deformed animal corpses, their own child's placentas, and other curiosities, and how they don't care what people think of them, or in fact that they want to defy popular opinion…as James put it: "their truth to self is uncompromised…by notions of taste or fine arts or utilitarianism…they're the freest people of all…they've freed themselves from the tyranny of the respectable opinion of other people;" and finally he describes an exhibition about Marie Antoinette at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (the lines to get in were staggering), a collector of shoes and porcelain and snuff boxes and furniture…who was so vilified/demonized for political reasons, as the enemy of the people…she is the classic case of the political demonization of a collector who is executed as if it would purge the suffering of her subjects; the most classic case of that political question around the collector, and how, ironically, it was her execution that made her immortal.  

In 1990, Monroe County's daytime television viewing habits were disrupted by a TV first: the live broadcast of The People v. Arthur J. Shawcross. Never before had home viewers anywhere been given access to gavel-to-gavel coverage of a sordid murder trial. The show lasted eleven weeks, September to December. Viewers that normally followed daytime dramas or game shows were instead focused on the trial of a serial-killer who'd confessed to killing ten women in Monroe County, and one more in Wayne County, but whose lawyers claimed he was insane and not responsible for his actions. Fans of courtroom dramas like Perry Mason, now saw the real thing, sometimes lazy in its pacing, but raw and unfiltered in its subjects and language. The show ran on cable station WGRC (Greater Rochester Cable) and was set in teak-paneled Courtroom 206 of the Monroe County Public Safety Building, which had been equipped and wired as a TV studio.A few watched the first day's broadcast, were repulsed and changed the channel. Most viewers however were fascinated and watched for the rest of the fall.The show's villain obviously was Shawcross, yet he put no work into his role. . Throughout, he sat at the defense table motionless and silent, staring at his shoes.The hero was Assistant District Attorney Charles Siragusa, who led the prosecution. By the trial's third week, Siragusa was receiving fan mail and baked cookies from “groupies.”Not every witness fared well under the lights. One defense witness, a forensic psychiatrist on the stand for many days, while trying to convince the jury of Shawcross's insanity, drew unwanted laughter and was eventually satirized by morning radio shows because of her rambling answers and disorganized demeanor.For several weeks, videotapes were shown in the courtroom (and on Channel 5) of the defendant supposedly under hypnosis, describing horrific acts that went well beyond what we'd ever heard discussed in our own homes: necrophilia, cannibalism, atrocities in Vietnam, cruel incestuous abuse. Shawcross claimed in falsetto that his mother took over his brain when he killed, much like Alfred Hitchcock's twisted villain Norman Bates in the movie Psycho.The prosecution's star witness was forensic psychiatrist Dr. Park Dietz. He, too, had extensively examined Shawcross, but not under hypnosis. He concluded that Shawcross was faking his mental illness, that he was not psychotic but rather a malingering psychopathic, not crazy just extraordinarily mean.“He is an anti-social. He lacks moral scruples and any sense of empathy,” Dr. Dietz testified.Viewers were horrified to learn that Shawcross as a young man had killed two children near Watertown, N.Y., ten-year-old Jack Owen Blake, murdered on May 7, 1972, and eight-year-old Karen Ann Hill, killed May 7, 1972. Stanford dropped a new study focused on AI causing "delusional spirals.” As you can imagine, it spun up sci-fi panic. And hey, there's some concerning stuff to consider. However, what the research actually reveals is far less about AI turning us into Norman Bates and far more about a hidden risk to your organization's decision-making. The reality is a sobering look at how we interact with technology that is mathematically built to agree with us.  In this week's episode of Future-Focused, I‘m breaking down the recent research on AI-driven delusions and making it actionable. I start by demystifying the study's clickbait headlines to prevent you from being overly influenced by an extreme, biased sample size of 19 people from a support group and instead focusing on the underlying mechanics of the tech you should know about. I'll break down the five core patterns of the "Yes-Man" machine, including how AI actively dismisses counter-evidence and the "grandeur effect" where it strokes our egos at scale. Most importantly, I'll highlight why these traits are fueling a dangerous "Anti-AI Hangover" in the boardroom, where leaders are increasingly rejecting good ideas simply because an AI touched them.  My goal is to help you move beyond the binary of "is AI good or bad" and mitigate the risks to your organization by highlighting three opportunities to prepare your team for what's ahead:  ​ Normalizing the "How" Over the "Did You": We love to play gotcha when it comes to AI use. I break down why simply asking "Did you use AI?" puts people on the defensive and fuels the taboo. You cannot build a healthy tech culture in secret; you must shift the question to "How was AI used as part of this process?" to celebrate efficiency while opening the door for critical review.  ​ Conducting a Human Context Audit: We casually assume that because AI sounds brilliant, it considered all the angles. I share why relying on a frictionless machine is a recipe for strategic failure. You need to actively ask your team what human context is missing and what counter-evidence the AI might have dismissed, ensuring you don't accidentally execute a strategy built in a vacuum.  ​ Designing Strategic Friction: We are avoiding slowing down because the market demands speed. I explain why AI's default setting of "frictionless alignment" is actually dangerous, because friction is what leads to growth. You must intentionally design "strategic friction" checkpoints into your workflows to pause, pressure-test assumptions, and verify that the AI isn't just steering you down the wrong path.  By the end, I hope you'll recognize that true leadership in the AI era isn't about bracing for a sci-fi apocalypse or rejecting the tools altogether. Join Alex in a solo episode as he explores the more overt mother obsession themes in Hitchcock's Psycho (1960). The film released two years after Hitchcock's Vertigo, which had subtler mother obsession themes. In this film, which stars Janet Leigh as Marion Crane and Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates, Hitchcock specifically smacks the audience over the head with the overt Oedipal complex and Freudian themes. Hailed as a masterpiece in its own right, Psycho is considered to be Hitchcock's first horror movie, with a insane lasting cultural impact, the least of which the shrieking violins. The discussion is split into two broad parts: the first explores the Freudian themes in a historical context, as a sort of companion follow-up to the previous episode on Vertigo, and the second part latches onto the psychiatrist's monologue at the end the film as a closer interpretation to what a modern clinical psychologist might assess and analyze within the context of the film's plot.
