Corman Graduates: Jack Hill Part 1 with Calum Waddell

We're unveiling a new series on the podcast: Corman Graduates, where we chronologically discuss the filmography of a director who went through "the Roger Corman school of filmmaking" and we're starting with Jack Hill, director of films like TEH BIG DOLL HOUSE and COFFY. Joining us for this first episode is writer, film historian, and filmmaker Calum Waddell, who literally wrote the book on Jack Hill with 2009's Jack Hill: The Exploitation and Blaxploitation Master, Film By Film. We start at the very beginning of Hill's career with "The Host," his student film at UCLA, and his entry into the world of Roger Corman with his work on 1962's THE WASP WOMAN and 1963's THE TERROR before getting his first feature-length assignment, 1966's BLOOD BATH aka TRACK OF THE VAMPIRE, which saw Hill try to create a film around footage from a film shot in Yugoslavia that Corman had invested in.  Corman eventually hands it to Stephanie Rothman, another Corman graduate, who took Hill's film about an obsessed artist who murders his models into a vampire film (at Corman's request, of course). Did we like the film? We discuss! We then talk about what Jack Hill felt was his true directorial debut, 1967's SPIDER BABY, which Hill did away from Corman and took some time before it reached theaters and then was mostly forgotten until Quentin Tarantino stepped in the 1990s when he re-released Hill's 1975 film SWITCHBLADE SISTERS on his now-defunct Rolling Thunder Pictures label. We'll discuss the incredible performances - including Sid Haig and Lon Chaney Jr. - and why the film was so prophetic to the horror films that followed it. Don't miss this look into the beginnings of Jack Hill's career with the keen insight and first-hand knowledge of another exploitation expert, Calum Waddell. On this week's episode Phillip is joined by The Vern from the Cinema Recall Podcast, and they discuss Jack Hill's 1975 gang picture, The Jezebels AKA Switchblade Sisters. They start the show by reading some late comments from last week's episode Dawn of the Dead. Phillip then asks Vern how he rates the Romero trilogy and then don't quite see eye to eye. In the Tarantino Talks segment Phillip plays the introduction to the movie by Quentin Tarantino on the Rolling Thunders Pictures release. Then it's time to read the general information about the movie with some facts sprinkled in. It's then time for Listener Opinions from Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Phillip and the Vern then discuss the fun time that is Switchblade Sisters. The two of them discuss Jack Hill movies, and female empowerment. It's a fun and interesting discussion. Then it's time to talk about whether they noticed anything that Tarantino might have liked or used in a film. They individually rate the movie with their Letterboxd rating. Then they answer the question whether they would buy, rent, or find the movie for free. Phillip does not have a Phil's Film Favorite of the Week this week. They discuss movies and podcasts, and all kinds of things. Phillip then promotes next week's show, when he is joined by Jennifer Upton, the author of Japanese Cult Cinema to discuss Lady Snowblood (1973) (available on MAX). Happy Halloween! You're getting this week's episode one day early because it is, in fact, a Halloween episode. “The Stranger” (October 25, 1985) Benson may have been a more conventional sitcom than Soap, the show it spun off, but that doesn't mean it didn't have its exceedingly weird moments — including this final season Halloween special in which Benson must play a trivia game with death personified in order to save the lives of 41 hapless schoolchildren. It's basically the last moment in time an otherwise grounded sitcom could get away with this, and we're lucky to have James Eldred on hand to discuss it. Also he suggested it! Please don't spoil Poker Face for him. Also give a listen to his Cinema Oblivia podcast — and check out the episodes Drew guested on, about Switchblade Sisters and Troll. "Hey, I lost my eye for this gang, remember?" We watched "Switchblade Sisters" (1975) with our friend Ben Cheaves and we're Jezebels - remember that name! All we can say is thank you to Quentin Tarantino for breathing new life into this girl-gang expoitation masterpiece. We can see how this one could have easily fallen into obscurity, but Tarantino's re-release in 1996 kickstarted its cult status. Lace (Robbie Lee) leads the Dagger Debs - the baddest girl gang in town (maybe L.A., maybe NY, we'll never know) - and her whole world gets thrown into dissaray with the arrival of Maggie (Joanne Nail) the tough girl from the other side of town. The ensuing events are truly Shakespearan with Lace's tough as nails second in command Patch (Monica Gayle) turning in an epic performance filled with jealosy and rage. Many of the actresses were plucked from X Rated and grindhouse movies and the average age of these "high school" characters makes the cast of "Grease" look age appropriate. It adds to the charm! If you listen to our Pod then you know we're going to spend a whole lot of time breaking down exactly where these locations were in the grimy, hollowed out Los Angeles of the 1970's, cause that's how we roll. Switchblade Sister's wasn't winning any Oscars (or any other awards) but it knows exactly what it's selling and it's delivering at all times. Randa and Dee from the Switchblade Sisters Social Club podcast join Flixwatcher to review Randa's choice I, Tonya. I, Tonya (2017) is mockumentary biographical sports film that follows the life and career of American figure skater Tonya Harding and her involvement in the assault of Nancy Kerrigan that led to the end of her professional skating career. Directed by Craig (Lars and the Real Girl) Gillespie it stars Margot Robbie as Tonya (earning her a Best Actress Oscar nomination), Allison Janney as LaVona Golden, Tonya's abusive mother (winner her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar), Sebastian Stan as Jeff Gillooly, Tonya's abusive ex-husband and Paul Walter Hauser as Shawn Eckardt, Jeff's friend and partner in the assault on Nancy Kerrigan. I, Tonya blurs the lines between fact and fiction, using the Rashomon effect to tell story of Tonya's rise to fan and the infamous incident, what is clear though is that Tonya was let down by everyone and suffered discrimination that other skaters didn't face. The recommendability scores for I, Tonya were very high and due to Randa's peference for watching films on her phone for small screen to give an impressive overall rating of 4.21.   [supsystic-tables id=323]   Episode #310 Crew Links Thanks to the Episode #310 Crew of Diana and Randa from @ssscpodcast You can find their website here And at https://switchbladesisterssocialclub.com/     Please make sure you give them some love   More about I, Tonya For more info on I, Tonya you can visit I, Tonya IMDB page here or I, Tonya Rotten Tomatoespage here. Shot on a shoestring in six wild weeks, CHUNGKING EXPRESS is the movie that put legendary Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar Wai on the international map—along with his star, pop diva Faye Wong...and her Cantonese cover of The Cranberries's hit "Dreams."Host Rico Gagliano learns how the song, the director, and the singer all came together to capture Hong Kong at a moment of anxiety and hope—and how the tune still unites people in karaoke bars across Asia. Featuring Cranberries guitarist Noel Hogan, Hong Kong-born indiepop star Emma-Lee Moss (aka Emmy The Great), Variety and Artnet writer Vivienne Chow, "Chungking" score co-composer Roel A. We take a little horror break, and hit the streets for some exploitation action! And high school. Because when you think action, you think high school. But let me tell you, these teachers might actually struggle more than the gang members in the other two movies.Director Jack Hill brings us a tale of rivalries and betrayal in an all-female gang. Juvenile delinquency and exploitation trash go hand in hand, in Switchblade Sisters (1975)!Can you dig it? If you can't, then you might want to stay away from New York City in the '70s. When Cyrus, leader of the largest gang in the city, is assassinated while a truce is in place for a massive meeting of local gangs, one gang is falsely accused and suddenly on the run for their lives! Will The Warriors (1979) come out to play, in this irresistible cult classic? And then from there, I don't know what is going on at this high school, but the faculty is clearly in a lot of trouble. While the administration seemingly does nothing, a gang of punks makes the lives of the teachers a living hell! Should the Class of 1984 (1982) be expelled?

DP Jendra Jarnagin on the film Asking For It, tips on working with short prep time, developing a DP/director bond, how to light for women

Jendra Jarnagin returns to The Cinematography Podcast after 7 years to talk about her latest movie, Asking For It, a female vigilante revenge thriller, about women who exact revenge on men who have abused women. First-time director Eamon O'Rourke wanted it to be a female exploitation-style movie without the exploitation, and he and Jendra were influenced by films such as Switchblade Sisters, Belly, True Romance, and Natural Born Killers. Jendra was hired to work on the low-budget film only three weeks before the shoot, so she had to hit the ground running with a very short amount of prep time. O'Rourke had made a look book, so Jendra used what he created to get herself up to speed. The days were full of casting and scouts, but the evenings were spent as sacred one-on-one time to discuss the film and create the DP/director collaborative bond. O'Rourke was concerned about the fact that he is a white man telling a story with women of color and their experience with sexual assault. He was open to handling the material with sensitivity and listened to Jendra and the female cast and crew members about how to shoot certain scenes. They gave careful consideration to what the film wanted to say and how to portray the feeling of emotional overwhelm visually. Jendra also discusses her recent work on a 2020 commercial featuring former First Lady Michelle Obama. It was shot soon after production started returning after COVID lockdowns, and the directors had to work remotely. One of Jendra's skills is understanding how to light women, and she is very proud of her work on this commercial. She had limited time with Mrs. Obama and knew she would not be able to tweak the lighting again once they were rolling. We're back, after a break, for season two of Video Store Nightmares! Join us to discuss master exploitation director Jack Hill's foray into high school gang-turf-warfare: Switchblade Sisters. New girl in town - Maggie - helps turn the all-girl Dagger Debs (a sister gang to the all-male Silver Daggers) into a ferocious, independent force. Meanwhile, she's engaged in a power struggle with Lace, the ostensibly tough gang leader who secretly dreams of domestic bliss with fellow gang captain Dominic. Switchblade Sisters pays homage to drive-in juvenile delinquency films that came before, while influencing scores of exploitation film-makers to come. On this episode: an elevator assault, an abusive juvie warden, toilet bowl swirlies, teenage drug pushers, charity fraud, fights over student-union influence, acquiescent adults, derelict cops, teen pregnancy, a roller-rink massacre, Black-power socialists, ubiquitous switch blades, and ostracizing the poor girl who "lost an eye for this gang!"

John Carpenter has made an impact on film in two different disciplines. As a director , there's so many memorable movies in his filmography: Halloween, Escape from New York, Big Trouble in Little China, The Thing, and They Live – to name a few. His work as a composer is just as iconic. Carpenter scored many of his early films – including Halloween. The music he wrote has influenced an entire generation of horror soundtracks. His latest work can be heard in Halloween Kills, the latest installment in the Halloween franchise. It's out now in theaters and the streaming platform Peacock. When Bullseye got the opportunity to talk with Carpenter, we knew just the person for the job: April Wolfe. She was previously a film critic, and former host of the Maximum Fun genre film podcast Switchblade Sisters. These days she's a screenwriter. April takes a deep dive with John Carpenter on various number of his movie projects and film scores including his Apocalypse Trilogy and Assault on Precinct 13. He also breaks down how he first composed the original Halloween theme – you might be surprised to learn bongos played an important role.
