The Cinematography Podcast Episode 326: Matthew Libatique, ASC Cinematographer Matty Libatique, ASC, has had a productive year. Shortly after moving to New York, he began work on Spike Lee's film, Highest 2 Lowest. Immediately after wrapping that project, Matty prepped for Darren Aronofsky's Caught Stealing, and then, following a short break, he collaborated with Bradley Cooper on Is This Thing On? (which releases in December.) He found it fascinating to explore New York City through the lenses of three distinct directors, feeling privileged to shoot three New York-centric movies back-to-back. The New York depicted in Highest 2 Lowest and Caught Stealing are starkly different, depending on where people from different socioeconomic backgrounds live. Both films effectively convey the diverse realities of living there. "When you look at both films, separately, you have a feeling of New York, you feel like you're living in New York inside of these films," Matty explains. "And it's because the directors live in New York and have grown up in New York." During location scouting with both Lee and Aronofsky, Matty noted their deep familiarity and emotional attachment to where they chose to shoot. He feels that movies faking New York locations lack the inherent authenticity of shooting in the real city. Highest 2 Lowest is a reinterpretation of the Akira Kurosawa classic, High and Low. Matty used High and Low as an influence, even though Lee was not making a direct adaptation. He found the Kurosawa film helped him see the hierarchy between the affluent and the poor, and the literal rise to the top of a hill by the wealthy industrialist from his humble origins. These themes became the seed of his visual inspiration. In Highest 2 Lowest, Denzel Washington's record executive David King inhabits a high-rise, literally looking down on the world from a high vantage point. The film is intensely character-driven, and with a large ensemble cast, Matty often shot with two to three cameras per scene. The film used an actual exterior of the Olympia building in Dumbo, Brooklyn while the crew shot on a volume stage set for the interiors. Matty found shooting on the volume stage and working with Unreal Engine to create the background images for the penthouse set to be the most challenging aspect of the shoot. It demanded far more advance planning and preparation to perfect the background images than the production schedule allowed. He had to make early, calculated decisions and plan far in advance for shooting the plates that would be used as the backgrounds. Spike Lee frequently incorporates various film formats in his movies, and Matty saw an opportunity to use both a 16mm and a new KODAK Super 8 film camera once the action in Highest 2 Lowest shifted outside the controlled apartment environment. He use both the 16mm and the Super 8 on the subway and in scenes of the Puerto Rican Day parade, also combining them with different film stocks. Lee cut between these distinct formats, which made a sense of heightened chaos. Matty says, “It was just an effort to create chaos, you know, and having the unmatched visual images cut together to sort of just mimic a chaos around this character.” Caught Stealing recreates the New York City of the 1990s, with Martin Scorsese's After Hours serving as a major reference. Matty felt that the character Hank Thompson (Austin Butler) needed a distinct look to articulate the story. He thought about the rust-red tint of the Lee Marvin film, Point Blank, and used a Camtec Color-Con2 to deliberately bleed red color into a few key scenes. Even though Caught Stealing is entertaining and full of action, it was important to Aronofsky to tell a strong, narratively-driven story, with performance and character making the sequences as exciting and brutal as possible. “Like all Darren movies, there's a construct, there's a box, he sets up the architecture of the film,” Matty says.
Josh is joined by recurring guests Elijah Howard and Josh Brown for a double feature. First, they discuss Darren Aronofsky's "Caught Stealing" (Beginning-55:13) and whether they enjoyed Aronofsky bringing his sensitiblies to a more straightfoward story, the performances from Austin Butler, Zoë Kravitz and a deep supporting cast, the ways in which they appreciated a recreation of 1990s New York City and much more! Then, both Joshes talk about "Splitsville" including how co-stars and co-writers Michael Angelo Covino and Kyle Marvin crafted an insightful comedy about relationships through the lens of the not-so-common practice of swinging, Covino's impressive direction for a movie on a smaller budget, the impressive comedic performance from Adria Arjona and they both take the brave stand of defending Dakota Johnson's acting talent!

Frank is joined by Jamie, an Australian wrestling journalist and podcaster, to unpack Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler. They break down Mickey Rourke's career-defining turn as Randy “The Ram,” why the film treats wrestling with rare respect, how indie scenes work behind the curtain, and what the movie gets right about pain, pride, and the gig life. Expect talk on blading, deathmatches, deli counters, and the bittersweet final leap. The Wrestler - CA Timestamps & Topics 00:00 Welcome and guest intro, Jamie's magazine and The Commentary Booth 01:33 Why The Wrestler, and why it treats wrestling seriously 02:21 Indie wrestling in Australia and how regional styles differ 04:27 Two-minute plot speed run for The Wrestler 06:12 Rourke's comeback, near-miss Oscar, and how his story mirrors Randy's 07:03 Aronofsky parallels with Black Swan and the “passion vs body” theme 08:46 The physical toll: pain, injuries, and why “fake” is the wrong word 10:04 Casting what-ifs and why Rourke was the right choice 11:07 Marisa Tomei's character, boundaries, and mirrored struggles 14:18 Real wrestlers on screen: Necro Butcher, Blue Meanie, R-Truth, Nigel McGuinness 15:43 Backstage authenticity: planning matches and protecting spots 16:38 Filmmaking choices: over-the-shoulder, docu feel, sound and silence 17:11 The deli counter sequence and why it hurts so much 21:16 Blading 101, when companies allow blood, and modern policies 23:05 The indie hustle: bookings, calendars, and life on the road 25:07 Health care, rehab access, and duty of care today 26:42 Drugs, CTE, and hard lessons from wrestling's past 28:46 Favorite scenes and the ambiguous ending 31:04 Locker room rituals, “match memory,” and shared shorthand 32:50 What aged well and what hits harder in the gig economy era 34:16 Deathmatch primer and recommended watch list 43:56 Awards talk, where The Wrestler ranks, and Jamie's current projects 46:04 Outro and how to send us your challenges Key Takeaways The Wrestler is a love letter to pro wrestling that treats the craft and its workers with respect. Rourke's performance lands because his real-life arc echoes Randy's fall and claw-back. The movie nails backstage realities: match planning, protecting limbs, and protecting spots. “Fake” is a myth. Stories are scripted. Physicality is very real. Aronofsky's choices — handheld camera, long silences, ring sounds — put you in Randy's head. The deli scene is a perfect “what if” path that collapses under one bad interaction. Indie wrestling is a grind: bookings, travel, day jobs, and recovery are constant tradeoffs. Modern policies are better on rehab and blood, but the culture still battles pain and risk. Memorable Quotes “It's definitely a love letter to wrestling overall.” — Jamie “The stories are fake, but the physicality is real.” — Frank “It almost feels more like a fly on the wall documentary rather than a big budget motion picture.” — Jamie “I love the ambiguity of the ending.” — Jamie “You have to survive the bad days.” — Frank Links & Resources Our site: GeekFreaksPodcast.com GeekFreaksPodcast.com is the source of all news discussed during our podcast. Darren Aronofsky follows up his divisive Oscar-winner, The Whale, with a throwback to 90s capers. Caught Stealing is an After Hours pastiche without any ego and a studio potboiler aimed right down the middle of the road, it just happens to star one of the most charismatic casts assembled in 2025. Jeff and Derek discuss the star power of Austin Butler, the few surprises the film has in store, and this strange departure from Aronofsky's typical auteurism. Tune in!
God lytting!

Tara Erickson & Roxy Striar take on Darren Aronofsky's haunting 2000 psychological drama Requiem for a Dream, a visceral exploration of addiction, obsession, and the human need for connection. The film stars Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club, Morbius) as Harry Goldfarb, a young man chasing quick fixes; Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind, Labyrinth) as his girlfriend Marion Silver, whose dreams are consumed by desperation; Marlon Wayans (White Chicks, Respect) as Harry's best friend Tyrone C. Love, and Ellen Burstyn (The Exorcist, Interstellar) in her Oscar-nominated role as Sara Goldfarb, a lonely woman spiraling into diet pill addiction and delusion. Aronofsky's unflinching style, paired with Clint Mansell's iconic score (Lux Aeterna), creates one of the most unforgettable cinematic experiences of the 2000s. From the shocking descent of Sara's television-obsessed hallucinations to Harry's brutal hospital scenes, Marion's infamous degradation, and Tyrone's devastating imprisonment, Requiem for a Dream remains a deeply disturbing and powerfully emotional film that still resonates in discussions of cinema, addiction, and psychological horror. Pete and Trevor are back from their career ending injuries to see Darren Aronofsky's Caught Stealing, his pivot into comedy-crime-thriller territory starring Austin Butler, Regina King, Zoë Kravitz, Matt Smith, Liev Schreiber, Vincent D'Onofrio (and Bad Bunny apparently?). Legutóbb Darren Aronofsky, a "Pi", a "Rekviem egy álomért", a "Fekete hattyú", "A pankrátor" és a "Noé" rendezőjének filmjeiről beszélgettünk: Aronofsky neve egyet jelent a kíméletlenül személyes, testi és szellemi végletekig menő filmnyelvvel, amelyben a megszállottság sosem pusztán egy karakter jellemvonása, hanem az emberi lét pokolba vezető útikalauza. Darren Aronofsky vizualitása sosem pusztán stílus, hanem filozófia: képei mindig a szélsőséget keresik, a gyönyör és a borzalom határmezsgyéin mozognak. A gyorsmontázs, a test közelképe, a groteszk fény-árnyék játék, a testnedvek és sebek plasztikus ábrázolása mind a földi tapasztalat nyers igazságát hangsúlyozza.

In a recent interview with Josh Horowitz, director Darren Aronofsky dove into his unmade Batman Year One adaptation. Years ago, before Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins, Aronofsky co-wrote a script with comics legend Frank Miller, providing a new spin on the mythos in which Bruce Wayne rejects his family fortune and grows up on the streets of Gotham. A similar idea has recently made it to DC Comics in the popular series Absolute Batman. Aronofsky’s unmade Batman Year One would’ve starred […] The post Darren Aronofsky’s Unmade Batman Year One appeared first on Multiverse Of Color.
From Columbia Studios and Sony Pictures comes Darren Aronofsky's latest film Caught Stealing starring Austin Butler... and unlike most of Aronofsky's other films, I did not hate this movie. Caught Stealing follows a former baseball player finds himself immersed in the criminal underworld of 1990s Giuliani's New York. Caught Stealing is based off the book of the same name written by Charlie Huston. Caught Stealing comes out to theaters on August 29, 2025 and stars a large ensemble casting including Austin Butler, Zoe Kravitz, Dr. Who's Matt Smith, Regina King, Bad Bunny, and Liev Schreiber.
In this episode, we dive deep into Lost Season 3, Episode 4: “Every Man for Himself.” Sawyer takes center stage in one of the most brutal and revealing episodes yet, as he finds himself at the mercy of the Others—literally. We break down the layered manipulation tactics of Ben, explore the psychological warfare that defines this chapter, and unpack how this episode reframes Sawyer's character through flashbacks and pain. Jack's moral conflict and Desmond's eerie premonitions also get the spotlight as we explore the shifting power dynamics across the island. Then, in the second half of the pod, we shift gears to something equally intense but far more surreal: Darren Aronofsky's new film Caught Stealing. Based on Charlie Huston's noir crime novel, this gritty, hallucinatory thriller stars Austin Butler as a washed-up former ballplayer dragged into a spiral of violence in 1990s NYC. Zoë Kravitz brings her signature edge as a mysterious ally with motives of her own, while Matt Smith delivers a chilling performance as a sadistic gangster who's not nearly as scary as he looks. We'll explore how Aronofsky's fever-dream direction collides with pulp noir to create what might be his most accessible—and twisted—film since Black Swan.Join us for a ride through mind games, moral ambiguity, and cinematic madness.
For our seventh, and decidedly not warm and fuzzy episode in the season, Sarah's crafty programming has us plunging into Darren Aronofsky's Requiem for a Dream (2000)! Expect praise for Ellen Burstyn's Oscar-nominated performance as Sara Goldfarb which had crew weeping on set. We unpack the performances of Jared Leto, alongside Jennifer Connelly, as their grand aspirations turn into a spiral of despair exploring the dark side of films about toxic relationships and the pursuit of happiness. Was that Shooter McGavin?! Find out how the film tackles the often-overlooked prescription addiction alongside street drug use, and how it uses split screen to underscore the pervasive theme of loneliness. And why did Keith David show up late to the party? What to expect from this episode: We explore why Darren Aronofsky views directing like conducting an orchestra. Sarah explains the multiple meanings behind the film's title, "Requiem for a Dream". The hosts discuss Jared Leto's controversial acting methods and why Dan enjoyed his character's suffering. We analyse Aronofsky's distinctive visual style, including his famous quick cuts and use of SnorriCam. Dan speculates on a Happy Gilmore sequel starring Christopher McDonald's character from this film. Sarah and Dan debate whether the film contains intentional comedic elements, despite its grim subject matter. On this week's Thumb War, we revisit the world of horny, doomed teens and ask the question: what if they were even dumber… and older? Yes, it's the legacy sequel to I Know What You Did Last Summer, and it's back with the original cast, zero shame, and a whole lot of questionable decisions. We dive into why this movie exists, how it compares to Scream and Top Gun: Maverick, and whether legacy sequels are just nostalgia traps covered in blood (and denim). Also: Wicked looks incredible — even if the press tour made us want to eat glass The Smashing Machine might break your heart and Dwayne Johnson Shaq is owed an 18-foot Superman crystal Christopher Nolan has fans buying IMAX tickets for movies that don't even exist yet ...and yes, we're still mad about the soup-slurping Aronofsky trailer.
To celebrate Father's Day, we spend time with the story of one of the most important Old Testament patriarchs as depicted by acclaimed American filmmaker Darren Aronofsky. NOAH takes great liberties with the biblical legend of Noah, adding elements inspired by the pseudepigraphical Book of Enoch. In Aronofsky's NOAH, the harsh realities of day-to-day life in Bible times are exaggerated with high fantasy elements. The most notable addition to the story are the giant stone “Watchers”, towering giants whose stone exteriors imprison the souls of fallen angels doomed to wander Earth. These Watchers have a relationship with Noah's family, who they see as some of the last remaining humans on earth who care about doing God‘s will. Noah (Russell Crowe) hears the call of the Lord in a mysterious dream, which is later expanded upon when Noah's grandfather Methuselah (Anthony Hopkins) feeds Noah an ayahuasca-like hallucinogen, revealing the Great Flood and its brutal cleansing of the earth. Methuselah also gives Noah a seed from the garden of Eden, allowing Noah to carry on the esoteric knowledge of the garden to the new family line he will begin once the earth is destroyed. However, Noah is apprehensive about repopulating the Earth with humans who are by their nature prone to sin. He vows to kill the twins carried by his daughter-in-law Ila (Emma Watson) if they turn out to be girls, so humans will go extinct. He also doesn't let his incel son Ham (Logan Lerman) take a goth e-girl to be his wife. Fortunately, Noah's innate sense of human decency prevails (at least with Ila), because if he had killed Ila's babies, we wouldn't be alive to have a podcast today. Aronofsky's adaptation of Noah is similar to THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST in the fact that it executes a Bible story with a mixture of ambitious high fantasy and gritty realness. It's admirable that Aronofsky is able to turn one of the most implausible Bible stories into something that feels real. Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universesLast week, during an interview with Brazilian pop culture and media YouTube outlet, Omelete, to promote their new film, The Electric State, Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars directors, Joe and Anthony Russo offered insights on how the upcoming pair Avengers of films differ from their previous multi-phase, saga-concluders: Infinity War and Endgame; describing the duology as a “new beginning.” Joe Russo went on to reiterate the real motivation for the creative duo returning to the franchise after leaving on an all-time high more than 5 years ago. In a double dose of DC casting news, sitcom vet Jason Ritter has joined the cast of Lanterns in a recurring role as Billy Macon, a ‘good-looking charmer who does his father's bidding, clings to his small-town ego and has everything to lose.' Elsewhere, The Penguin actor, Colin Farrell has entered negotiations to replace Daniel Craig as the titular sergeant of Luca Guadagnino's Word War II film, Sgt. Rock.Despite the release of several new genre films, last weekend's domestic box office was notably slow – at an approximate $54 million total, sluggish enough to earn the title of 2025's worst box office thus far. Paramount's R-rated action comedy, Novocaine, starring Jack Quaid, took the top spot with $8.7 million, slightly below expectations. Meanwhile, Mickey 17 suffered a 60% drop in its second weekend, barely managing to stave off Steven Soderbergh's spy thriller, Black Bag, with hauls of $7.51 and $7.5 million, respectively. After more than a year of speculation, Apple TV+ has officially ordered a fourth season of its Emmy-winning comedy Ted Lasso. The pickup comes after co-creator and star Jason Sudeikis closed a deal to reprise his role as the titular character. Disney has released the first official trailer for body swap comedy reunion sequel Freakier Friday starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. The film hits theaters on August 8th, 22 years after the original. Conan O'Brien, who hosted the 97th Oscars telecast on March 2, has agreed to return and host the 98th Oscars telecast on March 15, 2026, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Monday. CBS has also announced that comedian Nikki Glaser will return in 2026 to host the 83rd annual Golden Globes.More than a year after Warner Bros. shelved Coyote vs. Acme for tax incentives, independent distributor Ketchup Entertainment is reportedly nearing a deal to acquire the film for around $50 million. Ketchup recently handled the theatrical release of The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, which has earned $3.9 million since its March 14 debut.Columbia Pictures is plotting a new Starship Troopers movie, tasking District 9 filmmaker Neill Blomkamp to write and direct an adaptation of the classic sci-fi novel story by Robert A. Heinlein. The Hollywood Reporter has learned “zero progress” has been made on Saw XI since writing partners Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan turned in a draft back in spring of 2024. Speaking on the project, Melton said “The reason it's held up is just, there's inter-squabbling between producers and Lionsgate. They just can't quite get on the same page.” A24 has released the first trailer for romantic feature film Materialists starring Pedro Pascal, Chris Evans, and Dakota Johnson. The film hits theaters on June 13th. Netflix has released the first trailer for Adam Sandler-led sequel Happy Gilmore 2. The film begins streaming on July 25th. Darren Aronofsky is in talks to direct Netflix's Cujo, a remake of Stephen King's classic horror novel about a vicious St. Bernard. The project is still in early development, and sources say Aronofsky has yet to hold creative discussions with Netflix. If the deal goes through, this would be his first feature film for a streaming platform.

In this episode of Horror Hour with the Hanna's, we pirouette into the haunting world of Black Swan (2010), Darren Aronofsky's psychological horror masterpiece. With Natalie Portman's Oscar-winning performance as a ballerina spiraling into obsession, this film blends beauty, madness, and body horror in a way that still lingers in audiences' minds. We break down the film's themes of artistic perfection, duality, and psychological decay, exploring how Aronofsky crafts a nightmarish descent into madness. Is Black Swan a horror film in disguise or a true genre-bending thriller? And how does its portrayal of ambition and self-destruction still resonate today? This week we are joined by Andrew from "The Revisionist Almanac". Send us a text4X4: Lars von Trier #3Breaking our own arbitrary rules just like Lars von Trier, the enfant terrible final director of Season 13's 4x4, the TGTPTU crew for our final pairing breaks with release date order to review the later paired film earlier, giving you this week ANTICHRIST (2009). From the throes of depression, LVT emerged to sink the world into his vision of grief, anxiety, and madness with the horror story of a couple (played by Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg), their gendered power dynamics, and a totally normal depiction of married sex life. Not only are these two main husband-wife characters unnamed (something host Jack hates), with the exception their child who won't survive the movie's Prologue, all other characters are extras who appear with faces blurred, maintaining the isolation and focus on the archetypes of a controlling male and a woman who cannot find herself in the narratives of motherhood. Or, that's one interpretation of many readings Antichrist allows as it questions, potentially: whether human nature is good or evil, if there is a different nature for women than men, how nature influences nurture, and if nature itself can be framed in terms of good or evil. Also left to questioning: the crew on this film as to whether LVT would finish the movie as his struggle with depression persisted. But what is not open to question is how visually arresting the film is. In combination with the Dogme 95-inspired handheld camerawork complemented by the time-cut style discussed last episode with Dancer in the Dark (also with no preproduction rehearsals for actors), LVT introduces two visual styles new to his filmography. The first, shot in a repetitive extreme close-ups, is a sequence reminiscent of Aronofsky's hip-hop montage (see Season 11) and 2024's Cuckoo (see future Season 19 Singer vs. Singer) that captures the feelings of anxiety experienced, initially, by the wife. The second stylist tone, and the one that opens the tragedy of their neglected child falling from a window while they are having black-and-white penetrative sex, uses high resolution slow motion for gorgeously crisp imagery that later is repeated but spectrally layered as if in a dream. From the hosts this week: Thomas demonstrates effectively totally knows what sex is; Ryan goes Cartesian; Jack receives a visit from the Sight and Sound people about putting Audition on his list; and Ken is a grump who wants LA to burn to the ground. Join one pair of hosts in praising the film or perhaps pose the question as a reporter for the Daily Mail did at Cannes (available on the Blu-ray) to LVT: “Would you please, for my benefit, explain and justify why you made this movie?” What does it really matter? Chaos reigns. Content Note: While a forest retreat where Dafoe's character discovers a mommy deer, a helpful crow, and a talking fox might sound like a family-friend animated film, the genital mutilation in the film definitely veers toward adult content. So CONTENT WARNING: while you might enjoy this film as two TGTPTU hosts did, you're not going to leave this film content. Final Note: At the release of this episode (late-January 2025), Bob's Big Boy in LA has been booked solid and the front of the building covered with flowers, but at the time of this episode's recording David Lynch had yet to slip into the ether.
