This is the message from our weekend service on 3/9/2025 with Pastor Evan Mawarire.
On this episode of Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different, Pastor Evan Mawarire joins us in an insightful conversation about the complexities of faith, the pursuit of happiness, and the importance of re-evaluating our core values. Pastor Evan Mawarire's journey is a testament to the power of courage, faith, and resilience in overcoming adversity. From his humble beginnings to becoming a voice of hope for millions, his story reflects the transformative power of self-belief and the pursuit of a higher purpose. In a candid conversation, Pastor Mawarire shares the lessons he learned during his darkest hours and how they shaped his vision of life and faith. You're listening to Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different. We are the real dialogue podcast for people with a different mind. So get your mind in a different place, and hey ho, let's go. Pastor Evan Mawarire on the Courage to Defy Social Norms Pastor Evan's journey highlights the importance of stepping outside the molds imposed by societal norms. Reflecting on how society often dictates expectations, he shares how breaking free from these conventions unlocked opportunities and insights he could never have imagined. “Once I broke that, I started seeing things I could never have seen no matter how much money I had paid." - Pastor Evan Mawarire This defiance wasn't about rebellion for its own sake but rather a quest for authenticity and self-discovery. His story reminds us that courage lies in questioning long-standing beliefs and seeking our own truth, even when it challenges conventional wisdom. The Power of Mental Scaffolding In a powerful metaphor, Pastor Evan compares the structures of our thinking to scaffolding—a temporary framework essential for building something greater. He emphasizes how reshaping our mental scaffolding can transform our relationship with reality. Whether in personal growth or societal movements, the way we perceive and articulate our struggles determines our capacity to overcome them. Pastor Evan's insights serve as a reminder that redefining our mental frameworks is key to achieving greatness. The Unsure Journey Back to Faith For those curious about faith or feeling disconnected, Pastor Evan offers an inclusive perspective. He acknowledges the doubt and uncertainty many feel when exploring spirituality. “Jesus just loves people with doubt,” he affirms. Drawing from his experiences, including moments of despair in maximum-security prison, he highlights how vulnerability and honesty can pave the way to spiritual connection. His message is clear: the journey back to faith doesn't require perfection or certainty—just a willingness to knock on the door. By embracing doubt and curiosity, anyone can begin to uncover a deeper sense of purpose and belonging. There are experiences in life over which you never get in this, and dialogue is one of those. Normally, we tell you some things you'll learn and some things to listen for, but not today – because we want you to get what there is for you to get from this conversation with our guest, Evan Mawarire. Evan Mawarire is a Zimbabwean clergyman who founded the #ThisFlag Citizens Movement to challenge corruption, injustice, and poverty in Zimbabwe. He's the man who stood up to an evil dictator Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, with nothing more than his voice, faith, and commitment to his country and his people. Pastor Evan mobilized a movement powered by social media and empowered the nation of Zimbabwe to peaceful protest. And when he inspired his beloved country, Pastor Evan inspired the world, but he has paid in unimaginable personal price. On this episode, you get to hear his story in his words like never before. You're listening to Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different. We are the real dialogue podcast for people with a different mind. So get your mind in a different place, and hey ho, let's go. Pastor Evan Mawarire on releasing the bitterness In this conversation, Pastor Evan Mawarire is asked how he maintains a positive attitude in the face of mistreatment and hardships. Pastor Evan admits to having felt bitterness and anger along the way, but emphasizes the importance of releasing these emotions and practicing forgiveness. Holding on to bitterness, he believes, only poisons oneself and prevents personal growth. By forgiving others and asking for forgiveness for his own mistakes, “I would be lying if I said I was never bitter or never angry at some point in my life, or in my journey, particularly this part of the journey. But you have to have an openness of heart to work that bitterness out. You have to have it in your hearts to be able to get to a point where you release the anger that you feel towards somebody because these are human emotions. At the end of the day, what bitterness does is that it does not affect what you are bitter towards, but it poisons your own well.” – Pastor Evan Mawarire Pastor Evan strives to be negative-free and to cultivate a clear conscience. He admits that this process is ongoing and affects all aspects of his life, including apologizing to his six-year-old daughter for his errors. Pastor Evan sees forgiveness as an essential part of his path, allowing him to thrive and be the best version of himself despite the risks and challenges that come with it. You can Forgive and still seek Justice Pastor Evan Mawarire is then asked how he can forgive those who have committed grave injustices against him and others, given the dangers he has faced. Pastor Evan explains that forgiveness is not a substitute for justice and emphasizes the significance of distinguishing between the two. He recognizes the importance of justice and understands that forgiving someone does not absolve them of their actions. While he has personally forgiven individuals such as Zimbabwean dictator Robert Mugabe, who threatened and mistreated him, Pastor Evan believes that justice must be sought for the crimes committed, not just for his own sake, but also for the millions of others who have suffered. He encourages others to forgive at their own pace, because true forgiveness comes from the heart and cannot be forced. Finally, he emphasizes that forgiveness and the demand for justice can coexist because forgiveness is a personal choice and justice must still be sought. Pastor Evan Mawarire on the Liberation Struggle of Zimbabwe Pastor Evan then shares his background and the values instilled in him by his father. He describes how his father, who had humble beginnings as a cow herder in rural Zimbabwe, actively participated in the liberation struggle for Zimbabwe's independence. When the war ended in 1980, his father, along with his newlywed mother, moved to the capital city,

We’re excited to launch Frontlines of Freedom, RDI’s newest podcast, hosted by Pastor Evan Mawarire, our Director of Education.Pastor Evan Mawarire is a Zimbabwean democracy activist who led the This Flag protest movement, mobilizing millions and ultimately contributing to the fall of Robert Mugabe’s regime. Mawarire survived imprisonment and torture at the hands of the dictatorship, and was forced to flee Zimbabwe. Now located in the US, Mawarire will bring on a new guest each week to talk about their experiences leading a struggle for freedom against an autocratic government. Through guests’ real-life encounters, the conversations accentuate themes of hope, courage, resilience, strength, and the resolve of everyday people who believe that they have the power to overcome oppression. It is a first-of-its-kind show hosted by a political dissident and welcoming on other political dissidents as guests. For this first episode, Mawarire speaks with Nigerian musician and activist Catherine Udeh, also known as DJ Switch. DJ Switch was involved in the End SARS protest movement, a campaign to have the Nigerian government dissolve the Special Anti-Robbery Squad which is notorious for its brutality and disregard for the law. During a protest in October of 2020, Nigerian soldiers opened fire on protesters by the Lekki toll gate in Lagos, killing more than a dozen people. Rather than flee, DJ Switch live streamed the aftermath of the shooting, providing critical evidence of the government’s involvement as it denied culpability. Afterward, she was targeted by the government and threatened for whistleblowing. In their conversation, Mawarire and DJ Switch discuss the value of building and living in a free society and the responsibility we each have to protect it. Before beginning to describe this week’s episode, I’d like to announce that the Winter is Here podcast and James’ Democracy brief will go on a 2-week hiatus from May 23rd until June 6th as we will be joining my co-host Garry for the Oslo Freedom Forum in Norway and other promising meetings in Europe. However, while we’re gone, you can listen to RDI’s Director of Education, Pastor Evan Mawarire, in his Frontlines of Freedom podcast. Where Winter is Here is more of an analysis of different strategies in the global war between tyranny & democracy, Evan’s podcast is more about individual stories of inspiration and resilience. He’ll be speaking with dissidents who have found the courage to overcome incredible hardship in a way that should offer us hope for our own lives – whether we’re fighting for justice or just fighting to put food on the table. While we are still tinkering with our release schedule, for the next two weeks, Evan’s podcast will be released on Fridays. Now, on to our main event… Ruth Ben-Ghiat is the Professor of History and Italian Studies at New York University. She is an MSNBC Opinion Columnist and commentator on CNN, MSNBC, and other media outlets about authoritarianism and threats to democracy around the world. Her latest book, Strongmen: From Mussolini to the Present examines how illiberal leaders use corruption, violence, propaganda, and machismo to stay in power, and how resistance to them has unfolded over a century. She joined me to discuss how anti-globalist populists are frequently the most globalist leaders of all, how we can prevent dirty money from corrupting the free world, and why tyrants like Putin actually need to be humiliated in order to be stopped. Martha O'Donovan, Munyaradzi Dodo In the last year, Zimbabwe has seen a series of uprisings and protests that manifested both digitally and in the streets. In April 2016, the hashtag movement #ThisFlag started was founded by Pastor Evan Mawarire who created a selfie-video discussing what the colours of the Zimbabwean flag represent based on the current state of the country. The emotional video went viral on Facebook making #ThisFlag the popular hashtag to use to express dissent nationwide. When Evan Mawarire was arrested on July 6, 2016 over 4,000 people protested at the Magistrate Court until his eventual release that evening – using #FreeEvanMawarire to report live on the situation through Twitter. The same day, the Zimbabwean government used their networks of power to shutdown mobile internet and network for several hours in an attempt to suppress online organizing of the protest and limit online expression. The #ThisFlag hashtag movement made it clear that social media is a powerful tool for expressing dissent, organizing protests and dialoguing about the future of Zimbabwe. Following #ThisFlag, many other hashtags became widely used amongst various groups including university graduates (#ThisGown), political activists (#Tajamuka, #Hatichatya), rural mothers (#BeatThePot), among others. This talk will explore how Zimbabweans are using social media and comedy as a platform for citizens to express their frustrations with the absurd political situation. The two panellists, Martha O'Donovan and Munyaradzi Dodo, are both very involved in Zimbabwe's digital activism movement. Martha O'Donovan is the manager for Magamba TV, a production group that uses comedy and satires as tools to tackle current political, economic, and cultural issues in Zimbabwe. One of the series called ‘The Week', hosted by Comrade Fatso, is a very popular satirical round-up of local and international news. Munyaradzi Dodo is the manager of a citizen blog Kalabash Media and a political reporting platform Open Parly. @OpenParlyZW is one of the top Twitter handles to follow in Zimbabwe due to their accurate and reliable live reporting from Parliament, protest movements, and other political functions.
Radiant Culture — On this episode we have a chat with Pastor Evan Mawarire about being Bold. How can Christians become bold enough to take the Faith where it normally doesn’t frequent? He shares his experience thus far since starting a Citizens movement in Zimbabwe, clarifies his motives, honestly opens up about his shortcomings and outlines how God, being at the centre of all he does, has helped him in being bold to pursue what he believes is right. He backs up some of his actions with scripture and explains what it really means to be sent out as sheep among wolves.
Capital26Free — In a what was a tumultuous day in Zimbabwean politics Chris and Henry kicked off with the news of Pastor Evan Mawarire's release from remand on a bond. They were joined by Alexandra Mliswa to walk them through the bungling of major Constitutional Court matters. They went on to speak and speculate on the Zim People First and the expulsion of seven Elder members of the Party by Interim President Joice Teurai Mujuru.
