God plays by the same rules He sets for us. When He created and ordered the universe, He established not only physical laws; He also established moral laws. And His moral laws are absolute and unchanging because they express His unchanging character. God isn't simply asking us to behave a certain way. He's asking us to become like Him. This means that right and wrong are standards which apply not merely to us, but to God Himself. He is not above His own moral laws, but, of course, He has a vastly different perspective from ours. Some people when reading this passage assume Paul is warning us that we dare not question God on matters of justice. After all, they say, He is God, so He can do anything He wants, and the way in which they say this seems to mean He can't be held to the same moral standards to which He holds everybody else. But if that were true, He would be a tyrant. Tyrants are people who do what they want because they have so much power no one can stop them. Tyrants answer to no standards at all beyond their own desires. But the Bible pictures God very differently. It reveals a deity completely consistent with His own standards because they express His eternal character. So let's listen again to Paul's words and this time hear him call us to trust God, to drop our defenses and rest in His arms even when we don't understand what He is doing. Clouds without water are often found to be the tyrants among the people of God. A tyrant is a terrorist, not a shepherd. They care nothing for the sick, broken, scattered, and lost. Those they do encounter, they seek to dominate with force and severity rather than compassion. Tyrants would rather enslave people to systems of dependency and control than see them set free in Jesus. Tyrants ultimately are seeking to make disciples of themselves rather than Jesus. Like the Pharisees long ago, the modern-day tyrants actually view the grace of Jesus as a threat to their position and power. Are you under the influence of a tyrant?  Recently, noted author Walter Isaacson devoted a whole book to what he called “The Greatest Sentence Ever Written”, you know, the one that reads ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” While the beauty of the prose in the preamble to the Declaration of Independence is most often quoted, our guest historian and Professor of History, Robert Parkinson, tells us in his new book that what follows in the form of 27 grievances against the King and his enforcers, represents the real crux of the reason we declared our independence in the first place. In “Tyrants and Rogues: Understanding the Declaration of Independence,” Parkinson details the reasons we decided we must break away from England at the time.  It is the first book in 120 years devoted to the meat of the Declaration of Independence.  On the 250th anniversary of this world changing event, we thought we’d have him get to the heart, rather than the spirit, of the matter.  He makes a bold case and by listening, you’ll have a great conversation piece for your 4th of July celebration.

On July 9, 1776, a group of American soldiers listened to the Declaration of Independence read aloud in New York City, then rushed down Broadway and spent several minutes prying a two-ton golden equestrian statue of King George III off its pedestal on Bowling Green. They hacked off the head, sent the body to a Connecticut foundry, and melted it into exactly 42,088 bullets, a number chosen deliberately to evoke the British revolutions of 1642 and 1688. On the road to the foundry, loyalist neighbors in Wilton crept out at night and stole pieces of the statue, burying them in their yards as a quiet counter-protest. Those fragments stayed hidden for centuries until treasure hunters with metal detectors dug them up. Today's guest is Robert G. Parkinson, author of Tyrants and Rogues: Understanding the Declaration of Independence. We look at the 27 grievances that make up the body of the Declaration, the section that Jefferson, Congress, and the British government all considered the essential part of the document but that modern Americans almost never read. VA citizens have very limited options now that all of the gun control bills are sitting comfortably on a Dem ocrat Tyrants desk awaiting her certain signature. In particular, the gun ban that passed this week rendering VA citizens powerless. What options are available was discussed in detail as well as the likely outcomes. Simple answer?
