"I want to underline my own belief that art must carry man's craving for the ideal, must be an expression of his reaching out towards it; that art must give man hope and faith. And the more hopeless the world in the artist's version, the more clearly perhaps must we see the ideal that stands in opposition to it—otherwise life would become impossible! Art symbolises the meaning of our existence." ― Andrei Tarkovsky, Sculpting in Time (1986) The Cold War Cinema team is joined by guest Taylor R. Genovese to discuss Andrei Tarkovsky's debut feature film, Ivan's Childhood (1962), a Soviet masterpiece about the Great Patriotic War and prime example of Thaw–era cinema. Taylor R. Genovese is an assistant professor of philosophy at Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, New York. He has also been a filmmaker and photographer for over a decade. His multimodal and transdisciplinary research focuses on Marxism, historical memory, and borderlands. He is also an editor and board member at Iskra Books, a nonprofit scholarly publisher that releases original works of revolutionary theory, history, ecology, and art. In this episode we discuss: Andrei Tarkovsky's life and career The historical and political context of Ivan's Childhood Tarkovsky's aesthetic vision and theological concerns How the concept of "toska" shapes the sensibilities of the literary and cinematic arts in the Slavic world, including in Tarkovsky's films. The moving image representation of trauma and transcendence in Ivan's Childhood. The poetry of Andrei's father, Arseny Tarkovsky, and its influence on the filmmaker. The Soviet astethetics of Alexander Bogdanov (1873–1928), as articulated in his book Art and the Working Class, which Genovese translated from the Russian in 2022. China experts Tobita Chow and Jake Werner join PTO to talk about the recently concluded summit in Beijing between the United States and the People's Republic of China. We chatted about whether or not the relative thaw in relations (and the continuation of the tariff truce) is durable. We went on to talk about China's approach to Taiwan, and how realistic or otherwise the idea of a Chinese blockade or military assault on the island really are. And Jake and Toby explained what they see as potential crises on the horizon that might worsen relations between the two most powerful states in the global system.

In today's episode, Gina compares anxiety recovery, in particular a "nervous system thaw", with the natural transition of the spring season. The importance of noticing the difference between perceived threats and the awakening of life energy is touched upon. Listeners are reminded that discomfort and unease are an inevitable part of the anxiety recovery process and that experiencing them can be a sign of growth.Stillpoint Fridays is my once-a-week Friday note — a slower, more personal reflection that's different from what I share on the podcast. Free Guided Meditation for Calming Your Anxious Mind 10-Minute Body-Scan Meditation for AnxietyQuote:There is a quiet light that shines in every heart… it takes courage to trust the unfolding.-John O'DonohueChapters0:26 Welcome to the Anxiety Coaches Podcast6:37 The Healing Journey Begins12:02 Signs of Thawing15:20 Embracing the Spring of Healing17:01 Gentle Reminders for Your JourneySummaryIn this episode of the Anxiety Coaches Podcast, I delve into a concept I call "nervous system thaw," exploring the subtle yet powerful changes that can occur as we heal from anxiety and chronic stress. As we step into the vibrant season of spring, I draw parallels between nature and our healing processes, highlighting that just as the earth must thaw before it blooms, our bodies and minds may also experience a transition that feels messy and chaotic before achieving peace.I discuss the perplexing feeling that can arise when we start to notice a shift toward calmness. Many of us expect that healing will lead to a consistent sense of well-being, yet often it reveals a different reality: an increase in energy and feelings that can be surprising or even unsettling. We might wonder why anxiety can reappear when it seems like things are improving. This episode emphasizes that these feelings of discomfort are not setbacks but rather an essential part of the healing journey as the frozen aspects of our being begin to soften.I share insights on how our nervous systems can become accustomed to contraction as a form of protection, leading us to misinterpret feelings of openness and vitality as threats. This misunderstanding can create an internal struggle where joy and anxiety coexist, as our past experiences of vulnerability can make us brace for disappointment or loss when we begin to feel more alive. I remind listeners that it's vital to recognize the difference between activation as danger and activation as an awakening of life energy. To aid in this process of thawing, I offer gentle practices that listeners can incorporate into their daily lives. I discuss the importance of allowing our energy to move freely through activities like stretching, shaking, or purposeful breathing, encouraging a natural flow that can help alleviate the discomfort. I emphasize that what may feel like an unraveling is actually an opening—a necessary stage in our growth where we can confront and embrace our feelings without labeling them as problems.Additionally, I encourage listeners to trust this process of healing, likening it to the unfolding of nature in springtime. I remind them to be gentle with themselves, allowing space for emotions to surface without rushing to suppress or control them. Healing, after all, can be restless before it becomes peaceful. As this episode concludes, I leave listeners with a sense of hope and reassurance. I affirm that they are not moving backward in their healing journey; rather, they may simply be in a phase of thawing, an essential part of their growth. I remind them to embrace the discomfort and view it as movement rather than a setback. With a heartfelt invitation to nurture their healing process, I close with a quote that encapsulates the essence of trust in the unfolding of one's heart. Join me next time as we continue this journey together toward a more peaceful existence.#AnxietyCoachesPodcast #NervousSystemThaw #AnxietyRecovery #HealingIsMessy #MentalHealthAwareness #StressRelief #Mindfulness #SomaticHealing #SelfHealing #InnerPeace #NervousSystemRegulation #HealingJourney #Vulnerability #MentalWellness #GinaRyan #VagusNerve #PolyvagalTheory #EmotionalWellbeing #StressManagementTips #RecoveryIsPossible #HealingProcess #MindBodyHealth #SomaticAwareness #TraumaHealing #SelfCompassion #NervousSystemHealth #HolisticHealing #PeaceOfMind #CalmReflections #MentalHealthSupportSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
On 17 December 2014, United States president Barack Obama and the leader of Cuba, Raúl Castro, announced the normalisation of their countries' relations, ending 54 years of hostility. The announcement was a shock to most except a few trusted aides who had worked for 18 months to make it happen.Alejandro Castro, Raúl Castro's son, represented the Cuban side, while Ben Rhodes, Obama's speech writer, was sent by the US.Speaking to Anoushka Mutanda-Dougherty in 2024, Ben explains how he and Alejandro found common ground whilst hashing out decades of bad blood. They eventually flew to Vatican City to officially commit to a new co-operative future. In 2017, President Donald Trump partially rolled back on the deal, tightening rules affecting travel and on sending funds to the Caribbean island nation.Ben says: “The US government made a liar out of me. Considered frightening, horrifying, and repellent at the time, it would go on to become a cult hit on home video and is now regarded as one of the greatest horror films of all time. Recently, it also had the honor of being added to the National Film Registry for preservation at the Library of Congress for its cultural, historic and aesthetic importance. Join us as we discuss the impact this movie had and how it holds up today.https://www.spreaker.com/episode/the-thing-1982--69862454#horror #movie #film #80s #johncarpenter #kurtrussell #thething #Thing #alien #monster #winter #Antarctica #thaw #glacier #bleak #snow #ufo New Generation Video t-shirts in stock! As Washington digs out from a winter storm, there are signs that the long-stalled crypto market structure bill may be inching forward again, with behind-the-scenes negotiations aiming to revive a bipartisan path in the Senate Agriculture Committee. The episode unpacks the competing narratives around whether talks are truly back on track, the political tradeoffs shaping the next markup, and why stablecoin yield remains the most stubborn blocker. It also looks at how pressure is building from outside Washington, from Coinbase and Bloomberg's Neil Ferguson pushing back on banking-lobby arguments, to new yield-bearing products from Bitwise and BlackRock that could make parts of the debate obsolete, before closing with a look at how Bitcoin miners' grid-balancing role showed up during the latest round of extreme winter weather. From the BBC World Service: The world has been reacting to President Donald Trump's announcement of a vague framework agreement over the future of Greenland. The president said that the U.S. will not impose tariffs on eight NATO countries. Then, you might think of corporate bonds as relatively modern, but companies have actually been issuing them since at least the 17th century; so what kind of return can you expect from a bond issued in 1648 by a Dutch water company?

Send Kris and Rob a Text Message! On June 25, 1906, New York City's Gilded Age glitter cracked wide open on the Madison Square Garden rooftop theater—when millionaire heir Harry K. Thaw shot famed architect Stanford White during a performance of Mam'zelle Champagne. At the center of the scandal was Evelyn Nesbit, a teenage model and chorus girl whose fame, trauma, and private life were turned into public spectacle. In this episode, we unpack the true story behind one of America's earliest celebrity murder trials—often called the “Trial of the Century.” Who was Evelyn Nesbit beyond the headlines? What role did power, money, and reputation play in the world she entered? And how did Thaw's obsession—framed as “protection” and “honor”—spiral into violence in front of hundreds of witnesses? We break down the timeline from Nesbit's rise in New York's theater and modeling scene to the explosive night of the Stanford White murder, then follow the courtroom drama that reshaped true crime media forever: the “unwritten law” defense, the battle over the insanity plea, and why “not guilty” still meant confinement at Matteawan State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. This isn't just a story about a shooting. It's a case study in how America learned to consume crime as entertainment—and how a woman became the battlefield for two men's power war.Content note: This episode discusses coercion/abuse and murder (non-graphic).In this episode:Evelyn Nesbit's rise to fame in early 1900s New YorkStanford White's influence and secrets in Gilded Age societyHarry K.
