We look at recent events in Zimbabwe and the formation of the March 31 movement and ask how significant a threat it presents to President Emmerson Mnangagwa.Dr BLESSING-MILES TENDI, a politics professor at Oxford University, is the author of The Overthrow of Robert Mugabe - Gender, Coups, and Diplomats. He takes us through the complex political landscape of Zimbabwe today as well as the historical context of the 2017 coup against Robert Mugabe.Dr Tendi highlights the rifts between the elites within the ruling party, the role of the military, and the influence of the 'struggle generation' on current politics. He is an expert on coups and Dr Tendi highlights the misconceptions surrounding coups and the challenges of succession planning in Zimbabwe. We consider the international responses to the coup, and how Zimbabweans felt about the aftermath.Dr Tendi emphasises the importance of understanding the past when considering the future dynamic of civilian and military authorities.*We ask when is a coup not a coup? Find out why the international community was reluctant to classify the events of 2017 as a coup.*How far did Mugabe's iconic status as a liberating figure influence the way he was handled by the generals?Has President Mnangagwa coup-proofed his administration?Have the tensions within the military been resolved?Just some of the questions we grapple with in this episode of Africa Here and NowThe Overthrow of Robert Mugabe - Gender, Coups and Diplomats by Blessing-Miles Tendi Hosted on Acast. How the DA & IFP can survive a Mugabe-style GNU

David Coltart, a former minister in Robert Mugabe's Government of National Unity (GNU), shares some of the hard lessons learned in Zimbabwe where Zanu-PF used the GNU to hollow out the opposition and become stronger than ever. “.. applying that to South Africa, the DA, the IFP,  they need to demonstrate some savvy. It's a balance. Obviously, they've got to deliver effectively on their own ministry so that they can demonstrate to the electorate in South Africa that they are competent and inspire confidence. And that needs to be their dominant responsibility. But they must not ever do that at the cost of allowing the ANC to consolidate their power in the areas of civic bodies, universities, the judiciary and critically, the media”. Coltart doesn't see former President Jacob Zuma's MKP as a major threat to the GNU as long as the GNU works and delivers to the South African people. “But if the DA, the IFP laps into this notion that they hold these positions as of right and they don't have to deliver, then they will become very vulnerable to the populism of MK and the EFF to a lesser extent,” he warns. In the novel Glory, we find ourselves in the fictional country Jidada, which is peopled with all kinds of animals; bleating sheep, a confident pig preacher, vicious dogs making up the country's security forces, and at the very top: the Old Horse, who has ruled the country with an iron hoof ever since independence. He is «the longest-serving leader in a continent of long-serving leaders, and indeed in the whole wide world».Author NoViolet Bulawayo has drawn inspiration both from George Orwell's classic Animal Farm and the African tradition of animal fables in her allegorical story of Zimbabwe president Robert Mugabe's fall.In a bubbling and playful language, where satirical quips, twitter updates and razor sharp observations all follow each other, Bulawayo tells the story of the coup against Mugabe as it plays out among the animals on the Seat of Power as well as among the public. Through the goat Destiny, returned after years in exile, we get an outsider's view on the events, and in a vivid mother-daughter portrait, we follow Destiny and her mother in a journey back to a part of the country's bloody history that has long been silenced. The result is a masterly satirical story in which Bulawayo explores universal themes such as freedom and repression, hope and justice, showing us how the story is relevant far beyond the borders of Zimbabwe, in a world where authoritarianism is on the rise.Writer NoViolet Bulawayo is the first African woman to appear on the prestigious Booker list twice, first for her 2013 debut We Need New Names and then for her second novel Glory in 2022. She has taught creative writing at Stanford for many years, and her own writing has earned her a number of prizes and accolades. At the House of Literature, Bulawayo was joined by poet and writer Priya Bains for a conversation about fables and animals, literary playfulness, and Zimbabwe's recent history. Since independence in 1980, Zimbabwe has been controlled by one political movement - ZANU-PF. Outside the country this was often seen as the personal fiefdom of one man, Robert Mugabe. Undoubtedly he was the key figure, but after his removal from power in 2017, the party has continued to control Zimbabwe's politics and its institutions. So it is a fair question whether there has ever been a legitimate election held in the country.Last week on 4 September president Emmerson Mnangagwa, formerly seen as one of Mugabe's most ruthless henchmen, was sworn in for a second presidential term after another election marred by serious allegations of election irregularities, violence and targeting of opposition supporters. But this time there were differences: election monitors from Zimbabwe's neighbouring countries, which have a history of turning a blind eye to such irregularities, on this occasion chose to spell out in highly critical detail the problems with the poll. Another big difference was the way that opposition activists were able to use their smartphones and modern tech to run a highly credible vote tally, clearly demonstrating that the officially declared results were questionable at best.To discuss these elections I was joined by Dr Sara Dorman (Twitter: @afr_pol), a Zimbabwe specialist from the University of Edinburgh and author of Understanding Zimbabwe, published by Hurst. https://www.hurstpublishers.com/book/understanding-zimbabwe/ I also spoke to Makomborero Haruzivishe(Twitter: @MakomboreroH) who is a Zimbabwean political activist now based in the UK after a year as a political prisoner in Zimbabwe. If you are enjoying this podcast please subscribe via whichever platform you use and give us a positive review. We discuss what's been described as 'the worst red card ever shown' and try to work out why Jaco Peyper was so quick to brandish it, if Rugby is being ruined by the amount of red cards and soft officiating going on, why players are now taking inspiration from football and acting injuries to get their opposition sent off, Sebastian also opens up about how; referee's should be punished for their mistakes and stood down like players are if they don't perform, after Italy experienced another set of bad decisions against Scotland. We discuss how Ireland are the greatest team in the world and also why Sebastian thinks France are overrated and are there for the taking. Seb then takes us through his meteoric rise which has taken him from being chased out of his own farm in Zimbabwe by Mugabe's private army to having his life saved on the pitch by Ellis Genge to scrapping with Owen Farrrell at Twickenham and now to being one of the most sough after players in world rugby. It's 1980 and in February Robert Mugabe's ZANU movement was about to win the first Zimbabwean election - managing to scape a small majority – they won 57 seats out of 100. Not exactly a landslide then. In April, Mugabe would officially be declared prime minister and the country would become independent from the United Kingdom. ON the 1st April, the Southern African Development Coordination Conference was setup with Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe signing up. South Africa was the noticeable absentee because the main reason for the SADCC was to wean the other southern African states off South Africa's economy. Zimbabwe immediately felt the pain – South Africa stopped exporting fertilizer within a few months, then they cancelled a trade agreement with the National Railways of Zimbabwe. Harare turned to Mozambique, and in particular, the Beira corridor, Zimbabwe began exporting and importing products via this vital route which terminated in Beira. There was also that all important oil pipeline which had been closed through the Bush War which was going to be reopened. Before all of this started, planning of another type was under way. The Recces and the Rhodesian SAS wanted one more opportunity to attack Robert Mugabe who was living in Maputo. Speaking of time and money – the far eastern area of Ovamboland had experienced some peace and quiet for some time and by 1981 the Kavango farming area of Mangeti was clean – it had avoided the insurgency that had characterized the central region. That was due to a number of factors, not least was a highly successful hearts and minds campaign launched by Willem Ratte of 32 Battalion's reconnaissance wing. Always highly situationally aware, Ratte had noticed that SWAPO tended to use the Nkongo route, around 60 kilometers west of Omauni, as their main infiltration path.

NoViolet Bulawayo joins Eric Newman and Medaya Ocher to talk about her latest novel, GLORY, which explores the waning days and political ouster of Robert Mugabe, the authoritarian leader who controlled NoViolet's home country of Zimbabwe for nearly four decades before he was overthrown in a coup spearheaded by his Vice President Emmanuel M-nang-gag-wa.  Allegorized as animals in the style of George Orwell's ANIMAL FARM—the major players in Mugabe's ouster and a chorus of citizens tell the story of utopian promise that becomes totalitarian terror, of ruthless political subterfuge and citizens' everyday survival, of a country torn between the righting of old wrongs and the almost cyclical production of new ones. At once an allegory for Zimbabwe's history and a deeply poignant reading of our own globally fractious moment, GLORY is an apt study in how leaders command and forfeit power, as well as the lives of ordinary people caught in the roiling waters of the political. Also, Danielle Lindemann, author of True Story: What Reality TV Says About Us, returns to recommend Lorrie Moore's short story
