If in doubt seek expert help. My quest gets closer to an inconvenient truth as I speak to coaches, consultants and, big potato grower with normal sized potatoes, Robin Griffiths. This is the proper time management episode and was a bit of a revelation to me. Mention is given to the pomodoro technique with insufficient explanation until closer to the end. The pomodoro technique is simply using a timer to spend 25 minuites on a task then having 5 minutes break with the option then to start again. Pomodoro is Italian for tomato which was the type of kitchen timer the inventor of the tehnique had at hand. Google it and you'll see one. While the UK and French elections are grabbing all the market and media attention, the most important issue most investors face is to get their medium- and long-term asset allocation right – which means getting the right side of the underlying cycles that drive market behaviour beyond the noise and excitement of immediate political events. Few market analysts are as well placed to make those judgments as Robin Griffiths, the Head of Multi-Asset Research at ECU, who has been analysing the ups and downs of financial market cycles in the City for no fewer than five decades. In this wide-ranging podcast, the latest in the Money Makers series, editor Jonathan Davis asked him for his views on how each of the major asset classes are likely to develop from here, starting with the bond market – the key to everything else.

Covel and Griffiths discuss how to use fundamentals in an age when interest rates are artificially controlled; Griffiths' history as a mechanical engineer and how he found his way into trading and technical analysis; regression analysis; Elliott Wave and cycles; the idea of whipsaws; geopolitical risks; China, India, and the rise of Asia; not trading off of geopolitical fundamental information; how Griffiths came to the conclusion that the efficient market hypothesis and much of what the mutual fund industry depends on doesn't hold water; spikes and why people in 2014 think that all spikes are gone; Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds by Charles Mackay and the cyclical nature of booms and busts; and virtual currencies.
