Caregivers Need Care Too - With Ashlee Cramer

Marrow Masters

Play Episode Listen Later May 27, 2026 37:00

In this episode of Marrow Masters, Peggy Burkhard talks with caregiver Ashlee Cramer about what caregiving really looks like during cancer, bone marrow transplant, and survivorship. Ashlee shares the story of her son Michael, who was diagnosed in 2020 with hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma. Their family had already lived through cancer once before, when Ashlee's husband Patrice was diagnosed with large B-cell lymphoma in 2014 and later died at home in hospice, surrounded by his family. Ashlee explains that caregiving is often misunderstood. Caregivers are not saints who always feel strong, positive, or ready. Many are scared, exhausted, grieving, and trying to manage jobs, children, finances, appointments, medications, and the emotional weight of watching someone they love suffer. She says caregivers often feel pressure to do everything alone, but that pressure can lead to burnout and isolation. The conversation focuses on the reality that caregiving is not always temporary or predictable. For Michael, treatment moved quickly from diagnosis to hospitalization to transplant. He received a stem cell transplant from an anonymous donor, went into remission, and then developed serious complications, including engraftment syndrome, acute graft versus host disease (GVHD) , and chronic GVHD. Ashlee says Michael is a miracle, and while GVHD remains part of his life, the key word is living. Ashlee also talks about mental health for caregivers. She names anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), burnout, and loneliness as common experiences. She points out that many cancer centers offer support for patients, but caregivers often have to search for help on their own. Support groups, virtual programs, and caregiver resources can make a major difference because connection helps people feel less alone. A central message of the episode is that caregivers need care too. Ashlee encourages caregivers to take small pockets of peace when they cannot take a full day away. A shower, a breathwork practice, a walk outside, a cup of coffee, or a short hug from another caregiver can help. She also reminds caregivers to accept help. A meal train, a friend waiting in the hospital lobby, or someone offering a few minutes of support can ease the load. The episode ends with hope. Ashlee talks about post-traumatic growth, or PTG, and the idea that people do not have to bounce back to who they were before trauma. They can bounce forward. Michael and Ashlee continue to advocate, share their story through their podcast Michael and Mom Talk Cancer, and remind other caregivers that they are not alone. This episode contains discussions of murder, execution, racial violence, and a botched public hanging. If you need to skip any section, the chapter markers below will help you find your way around. Support resources are listed at the end of these notes. This EpisodeSeason 40 of Foul Play covers America's forgotten crimes — fifty states, 250 years, and the stories that slipped out of the history books. Episode 8 closes out the season with a double portrait. One case from New Hampshire. One from Colorado. Eleven years apart. Two thousand miles between them. The same question at the center of both: when the law finally catches up with a killer, does it actually deliver justice? This is historical true crime at its most uncomfortable.Case A: The Great Falls National Bank Murder — New Hampshire , 1897Joseph A. Stickney was sixty-eight years old when a man walked into his bank on Good Friday morning, April 16, 1897, and cut his throat.Stickney was the cashier of the Great Falls National Bank in Somersworth, New Hampshire — a mill city of seven thousand people where the Salmon Falls River dropped one hundred feet over a mile and powered seven textile mills. The bank had operated since 1865. On a holiday morning, with the mills closed and families walking to Mass, Stickney was alone at his desk with $150,000 in money and securities behind him.The man who killed him was Joseph E. Kelley, twenty-four years old, born in Amesbury, Massachusetts. Kelley had been convicted in Somersworth five years earlier for breaking and entering. He had studied the bank's routine. He walked in with a blackjack, knocked Stickney to the floor, cut his throat, and left with approximately $6,000 in cash — leaving $144,000 behind. The historical murder investigation moved fast. Kelley hired a horse team from Whitten's Stable. The team was found the next day at Phoenix Stables. On April 29, investigators searched a boarding house in Berwick, Maine, where they found a box containing a false mustache and goatee. Kelley had already crossed into Quebec on a Boston & Maine train. He was caught in a Montreal brothel, seated between two prostitutes, still wearing a woman's dress he had purchased for $10 in gold from a hotelkeeper in Quebec. At trial in Dover, New Hampshire, in November 1897, Kelley changed his plea to guilty — but only if the hanging could be scheduled for January 16, 1898. He had a contract with the Devil, he explained, that expired January 15.Dr. Charles Bancroft of the New Hampshire State Asylum for the Insane examined Kelley multiple times and concluded he had the instincts of a man but the judgment and capacity of a child of nine. Expert after expert called him a "high-grade imbecile. " Chief Justice Alonzo P. Carpenter, who had served as Chief Justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court since 1896, presided over a bench that ultimately found Kelley guilty of second-degree murder — thirty years in state prison. Kelley was reportedly disappointed. He had wanted to hang.Case B: The Trolley Murder of Joseph C. Whitnah — Colorado , 1886On the night of May 19, 1886, Joseph C. Whitnah was driving a horse-drawn streetcar along the Broadway line of the Denver City Railway when two men approached his car at the southern terminus at Broadway and Alameda.Whitnah was a streetcar operator in a city mid-boom. Denver's population tripled between 1880 and 1890, from roughly 35,000 to more than 106,000. The Denver City Railway operated forty-five coaches across sixteen miles of track.Andrew Green, twenty-five years old, and his associate John "Kansas" Withers had been waiting for Whitnah's car. Green fired two shots from a .38 caliber revolver. The first shot was accidental — triggered when Whitnah screamed. The second was deliberate, close-range, through the heart. Whitnah died on the spot. The $14 in fares in his cashbox went untouched. The true crime investigation broke in six days. On May 21, a private detective received a tip at the G.A.R. Saloon on Larimer Street — the Grand Army of the Republic, a fraternal organization for Union veterans. Withers confessed almost immediately and identified Green as the shooter. Green was arrested and confessed on May 25. He told investigators he had been promised the death penalty would be taken off the table if he cooperated. That promise was never confirmed or denied.Green stood trial before an all-white jury. This was Denver six years after a mob of 3,000 attacked the city's Chinese quarter and lynched a man named Look Young. Defense attorney Edgar Caypless worked pro bono. He argued that no robbery had actually been completed, that Green's confession was coerced by a false promise, and that the first shot was accidental. The jury deliberated a little over an hour — was polled four times, one juror holding out for second- degree — and returned a verdict of guilty of first-degree murder. Death. On July 27, 1886, Sheriff Frederick Cramer of Arapahoe County cut the main rope at 2:24 PM before fifteen to twenty thousand spectators gathered between the Broadway and Colfax bridges. Vendors sold lemonade. Families had brought picnic lunches. Children were in the crowd.Green's neck did not snap. Twelve minutes after the jerk-up, doctors could still feel a pulse at his wrist. At 3:45 PM — eighty-one minutes after Cramer cut the rope — undertakers removed Andrew Green from the gallows and placed him in a casket bound for the "colored" section of Riverside Cemetery. The execution was condemned by nearly every Denver newspaper. In 1889, Colorado moved all executions to the state prison in Canon City, limited witnesses, and commissioned a new gallows design. In 1897 — the same year Joseph Stickney was murdered in New Hampshire — Colorado abolished the death penalty. It was reinstated in 1901.Historical ContextBoth cases arrived during the same decade, when American law was negotiating what justice was supposed to look like. In New Hampshire, a court grappled with whether a man who could plan a murder could simultaneously lack the mental capacity to stand fully accountable for it. In Colorado, a court asked whether a Black man could get a fair trial six years after his city had watched a lynch mob go unpunished.Neither question has a clean answer. Both still echo. This is Season 40 of Foul Play: America's 250th Anniversary — the crimes that didn't make the monuments. Our Sponsors:* Check out Kensington Publishing: https://www.kensingtonbooks.com* Check out Mood and use my code SHANE for a great deal: https://mood.comAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

7 Retirement Lessons from Real Retirees with Jesse Cramer

Retirement Revealed

Play Episode Listen Later May 19, 2026 54:35

Jesse Cramer and Jeremy Keil detail 7 real world lessons learned from working with hundreds of retirees. There's a big difference between studying retirement… …and actually sitting across the table from retirees for years. This week I sat down with Jesse Cramer and instead of doing a typical “Retire Today” interview, we decided to compare notes from working with hundreds of retirement clients and shared the lessons that rarely show up in textbooks or headlines. Experiences often speak louder than theory, so let's dive into the 7 main lessons. Lesson #1: Most Retirees Don't Have a “Purpose Crisis” If you spend time searching YouTube or Amazon for retirement advice, you'll likely come across the “retirement purpose crisis.” In our real-world experience working with retiree, this doesn't seem to show up the way financial media suggests. Yes, some retirees need time to adjust. But most aren't spiraling into an identity crisis after leaving work. Why? Because many workers weren't necessarily emotionally attached to the structure of their jobs—they were looking forward to having control of their time again. A lot of retirees quickly find purpose in: Family Grandkids Community Travel Hobbies Freedom itself The bigger adjustment often isn't purpose. It's learning how to structure time differently. Lesson #2: Most People Start Planning Too Late One of the clearest themes in the conversation was timing. Many people first show up to retirement planning webinars only months before retirement—or even after they've already retired. That creates problems. Important decisions around: Social Security Investments Pensions Healthcare Spending levels Taxes …all work better when there's time to think through options. Jesse's recommendation was simple: Start seriously planning at least 12 months before retirement—and ideally earlier. Not because every detail must be finalized years in advance, but because retirement works best when decisions are intentional instead of rushed. Lesson #3: Couples Need to Get on the Same Page Retirement isn't an individual decision when you're married. But many couples approach it that way. We find it is common for spouses to have completely different views on: Retirement timing Spending Investment risk Social Security Lifestyle expectations Sometimes one spouse wants maximum security. The other wants maximum freedom. And if those conversations don't happen early, conflict can show up later. I've seen couples who struggle with spending expectations and pension decisions because both people weren't fully involved in the planning process. The takeaway was clear: Retirement planning works better when both spouses understand the plan—even if only one person enjoys the financial details. Lesson #4: Social Security Can Be Flexible One of Jesse's most interesting ideas was describing Social Security as a “pressure release valve.” Instead of viewing Social Security as a rigid decision with one perfect claiming age, retirees can think about it more dynamically. For example: Delay benefits while markets are strong But turn benefits on earlier if market declines create stress on the portfolio That flexibility can help reduce sequence of returns risk—the danger of withdrawing heavily from investments during a market downturn early in retirement. The key insight? Retirement planning isn't static. Good plans adapt. Lesson #5: Too Much Stability Can Become a Risk Many retirees focus heavily on avoiding losses. That's understandable. But Jesse shared a cautionary example of a retiree with roughly 90% of investable assets in annuity products because she wanted maximum stability. The problem? Over-emphasizing one risk can create others. Oftentimes retirees “over-index” against market risk while unintentionally increasing: Inflation risk Liquidity risk Longevity risk Safety itself can become risky if growth disappears entirely. Lesson #6: One Big Mistake Can Change Retirement Forever I once had a client who wanted 10% retirement income and concentrated his entire portfolio into one high-dividend bank stock. Within days: The dividend disappeared The stock collapsed Half the retirement savings vanished It was a reminder that retirement success often comes less from finding perfect strategies… …and more from avoiding catastrophic mistakes. As Jesse referenced through Charlie Munger's thinking:Sometimes the smartest retirement planning question is: “What should I absolutely avoid doing?” Lesson #7: Retirees Often Need Permission to Spend This may have been the most emotional lesson in the episode. Many retirees struggle to switch from saver to spender—even when the math clearly says they can afford it. I once worked with a widow with more than $1 million saved who refused to withdraw money to visit her grandchildren because emotionally she couldn't bring herself to spend her savings. That's where framing matters. As Jesse summarized:You're not changing identities from “saver” to “spender.” You've always been a retirement planner. Earlier in life, prudent planning meant saving. Now, prudent planning may mean spending intentionally on things that matter. The Bottom Line Retirement planning isn't just math. It's behavior. It's psychology. It's communication. It's flexibility. And many of the most important lessons aren't learned from spreadsheets. They're learned from real retirees living real lives. On this week's podcast we talk with Drew Cramer of Ghost House Farm in Michigan about how he more than doubled his greenhouse tomato yields through good management and automation. Automation makes the difference between just controlling the temperature in a greenhouse and controlling the climate. And controlling the climate is what creates a growth-promoting, disease-discouraging greenhouse environment. In this interview we get nerdy to talk about the management practices Drew used and the ways he managed the climate for increasing yields and decreasing disease over time. We talk about how he used pulse irrigation and humidity control together to reduce diseases and seconds. Today, I'm very excited to welcome Jesse Cramer to the podcast. Jesse is the founder of The Best Interest blog and host of the Personal Finance for Long-Term Investors podcast, where he helps individuals cut through the noise of financial media and focus on what truly matters. In a world filled with headlines, predictions, and never-ending market chatter, Jesse brings a refreshing perspective for understanding what's actually important for your retirement plan. Jesse began his career as an aerospace engineer before transitioning into personal finance, combining analytical thinking with clear communication. His work has been featured in outlets such as CNBC and The Wall Street Journal, and his writing has gained a strong following for its ability to simplify complex financial topics, including investing, tax planning, and retirement strategy. We've featured Jesse's work many times over the years in our Weekend Reading series, and for good reason. In our conversation, we explore the concept of "signal vs. noise" and how it applies to retirement planning. Jesse explains why so much of what we hear in the media is designed to grab attention rather than provide value, and how retirees can filter through that noise to focus on what actually impacts their long-term success. In this podcast interview, you'll learn: How to distinguish between financial "signal" and "noise" in today's media landscape. Why confidence in retirement comes from adaptability, not perfect predictions. How sequence of returns risk impacts your retirement more than average returns. Why tax planning requires looking at your entire retirement timeline, not just the next year. The concept of "before and after" tax phases and how they shape your strategy. How different withdrawal strategies work and why there's no one-size-fits-all solution. Why understanding your own biases is critical to making better financial decisions. Episode 3351: Jesse Cramer challenges the popular idea of investing your emergency fund by reframing what that money is truly meant for: peace of mind and immediate security. He argues that if you're willing to risk part of it, then that portion was never truly an emergency fund to begin with. This perspective helps clarify how to separate safety from growth so you can make smarter, less stressful financial decisions. Read along with the original article(s) here: https://bestinterest.blog/should-you-invest-your-emergency-fund/ Quotes to ponder: "An emergency fund is the minimum amount of cash you need to sleep well at night." "The investing timeline of an emergency fund is zero days." "Only the money you're not willing to lose constitutes your emergency fund." Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
