The process of “case budgeting” is increasingly common in complex litigation, it's the science and art of laying out the potential time and cost of trying a case. Daniel Dowd is the managing partner and the president of the Phoenix law firm Cohen Dowd Quigley. He explains how to estimate: “How much will this cost to get to the finish line?”  But how do you do it? How do you react when a client brings up costs? Dowd details the labor-intensive process of understanding each aspect of the case and calculating costs, including discovery, expert witnesses, the potential for a mediated settlement, and even the nature of the court and opposing law firm. There are many variables, and as the timeline stretches out, projections can become less accurate. But if a client asks, a “best estimate” can help them understand the true cost of a case. “You build a skeleton … and then you have to estimate with your team how much time they're going to spend,” Dowd explains. “Then you get your calculator out.”  Plus, a quick tip from attorney and co-chair of the ABA Mental Health & Wellness committee Maritza Rodriguez of the firm Rodriguez Family Law as she discusses “the great commitment reset.” Get a fresh start on a new year by making fewer commitments, auditing your life, and cutting back on self-scheduling. This episode of Unidentified History provides a detailed recap of the UAP Summit, an amazing event hosted this past weekend that highlighted the shift from government-led disclosure to civilian involvement in UAP research. We recap all the awesome panels, highlighting the key takeaways across a variety of topics, with an emphasis on the importance of citizen scientists, technological advancements in detection, and addressing the ongoing stigma surrounding UAP reporting. Key themes include collaboration among researchers, the role of consciousness in UAP phenomena, and the need for funding to support ongoing research efforts. We discuss the complexities of UAP research, emphasizing the importance of citizen science, international collaboration, and rigorous data collection methods. Additional highlights from the UAP Summit include the challenges faced in the field, such as data quality and reporting standards. There is also a detailed recap of panels on the role of organizations such as Skywatcher and NASA in advancing understanding of UAP phenomena. At the end of the two-day conference, we can confidently state that the 2026 UAP Summit was easily worth the time and minimal monetary investment as it brilliantly underscored the necessity for a unified approach to UAP research, while, at the same time, advocating for a global effort to address the risks posed by these unidentified aerial phenomena. Once thought to be solely the stuff of science fiction, UAPs (UFOs) are very real to thousands around the world. In 2021, the US Government confirmed that leaked UAP video was legitimate. Ever since, there has been an explosion of interest in the topic. Yet, we are no closer to understanding UAPs, where they come from, or who/what is behind the phenomenon. In this series, we look to bridge the gap between the past and present by looking at some of the most important UAP sightings in history and determining whether the question of "are we alone in the universe?" might have already been answered. The process of “case budgeting” is increasingly common in complex litigation, it's the science and art of laying out the potential time and cost of trying a case. Daniel Dowd is the managing partner and the president of the Phoenix law firm Cohen Dowd Quigley. He explains how to estimate: “How much will this cost to get to the finish line?”  But how do you do it? How do you react when a client brings up costs? Dowd details the labor-intensive process of understanding each aspect of the case and calculating costs, including discovery, expert witnesses, the potential for a mediated settlement, and even the nature of the court and opposing law firm. There are many variables, and as the timeline stretches out, projections can become less accurate. But if a client asks, a “best estimate” can help them understand the true cost of a case. “You build a skeleton … and then you have to estimate with your team how much time they're going to spend,” Dowd explains. “Then you get your calculator out.”  Plus, a quick tip from attorney and co-chair of the ABA Mental Health & Wellness committee Maritza Rodriguez of the firm Rodriguez Family Law as she discusses “the great commitment reset.” Get a fresh start on a new year by making fewer commitments, auditing your life, and cutting back on self-scheduling.
