Markets rise and fall—but not all cycles tell the same story. What do those ups and downs really mean for your investments?Scripture reminds us in Ecclesiastes 3:1, “To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.” Just as God designed natural cycles—the sun, the tides, the seasons—financial markets also move through cycles. While less predictable, these patterns help us understand where we are in the investing journey and how to prepare wisely for what's ahead.According to Mark Biller, Executive Editor at Sound Mind Investing (SMI), the two most common market cycles are known as bull markets (when prices rise) and bear markets (when prices fall). But within those categories lie two distinct types of trends: cyclical and secular.Cyclical vs. Secular: What's the Difference?“The terms might sound fancy,” says Biller, “but they really describe short-term versus long-term cycles.”Cyclical markets are the short-term ups and downs—periods that might last a few months to a few years.Secular markets are the broader, long-term trends that can span decades—often between 10 and 40 years.Think of it like waves on the ocean. Cyclical markets are the smaller waves that move in and out, while secular markets are the larger tides that shape the shoreline over time.Learning from History: Market ExamplesFrom 1968 to 1982, the S&P 500 was essentially flat—a 15-year stretch where inflation eroded nearly 60% of investors' purchasing power. That's what economists call a secular bear market—a long-term period of little to no progress.Yet within that broader season, there were multiple shorter-term bull and bear cycles. Investors who recognized those patterns could navigate the market with more perspective and less panic. The same was true from 2000 to 2009, another decade of overall stagnation in U.S. stocks. “But even then,” Biller notes, “we saw two cyclical bear markets with a five-year bull market sandwiched between them.”The takeaway? Even in long-term downturns, some shorter-term opportunities and recoveries keep markets moving forward over time. Why It Matters—Especially for Bond InvestorsUnderstanding these cycles isn't just an academic exercise. “It's actually more helpful when it comes to bonds than stocks,” Biller explains. That's because bond markets move in much longer secular cycles. From 1982 to 2021, the U.S. enjoyed a 40-year secular bull market in bonds as interest rates steadily declined from 15% to near zero. But since 2020, that trend has reversed. “Interest rates have been rising again,” Biller says, “and that's led to negative returns for many bond investors over the last five years.”This shift could signal the beginning of a secular bear market for bonds—a long period in which rising interest rates make it harder for bonds to perform well.Rethinking the Classic 60/40 PortfolioFor decades, the “60/40” portfolio—60% stocks and 40% bonds—was the gold standard for balanced investing. But in today's environment, that mix may need to evolve.“At Sound Mind Investing (SMI), we've reduced our bond allocation to around 30%,” Biller explains. “We haven't abandoned bonds altogether, but we're diversifying beyond them.”That diversification includes strategies like:Dynamic asset allocation—adjusting investments as market conditions shiftGold and commodities—as hedges against inflationReal estate and energy stocks—for long-term growth potentialAlternative assets like Bitcoin (in small doses), to add further varietyBuilding a Portfolio That Endures Every SeasonWhether markets are bullish or bearish, cyclical or secular, the goal remains the same: build a portfolio that's resilient and rooted in wisdom.Biller's encouragement for long-term investors is simple:“We're not advocating for dramatic changes, but rather thoughtful diversification. The goal is to build portfolios you can stick with through every kind of market season.”That perspective echoes a deeper truth for believers: our ultimate security isn't found in market trends but in God's unchanging character. Markets may rise and fall, but His promises endure forever.Faith, Patience, and PerspectiveUnderstanding both short- and long-term market cycles helps us invest with patience, discipline, and faith—trusting that God is sovereign over every season, financial or otherwise. As Proverbs 21:5 reminds us, “The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty.”In every bull and bear market, we're called to plan wisely, give generously, and trust deeply—knowing that the One who holds the future also holds us.For more practical investing insights and biblical wisdom, visit SoundMindInvesting.org.On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I'm nearing retirement with no debt and some investment savings, but I don't have a pension. Functional healing isn't about bouncing back, it's about becoming more whole. In this episode of Trauma Rewired, Elisabeth Kristof and Jennifer Wallace are joined by somatic expert Veronica Rottman, founder of Soma School, to explore what happens when post-traumatic growth deepens into post-traumatic wisdom. Together, they unpack how healing often involves grief, identity shifts, and surrender, not just resilience and strength. You'll hear how emotions are constructed in the body, why dissociation and fawning are intelligent survival responses, and how safety is rebuilt through slow, titrated somatic experiences. We discuss how cultural narratives about “getting stronger” can overlook the body's need for modulation, rest, and relational repair. You'll learn how capacity building is nonlinear, why co-regulation and oxytocin-based safety cues matter, and how tending to wounds rather than fixing them can transform pain into embodied wisdom. Join us for a workshop, taking a deeper dive into Hormones, Stress and the Female Nervous System, combining applied neuroscience and somatics to support female cycles: https://neurosomaticintelligence.com/female-nervous-system-workshop/ Timestamps: 00:00 Welcome and framing: growth vs. wisdom 05:30 Emotions as predictions and survival patterning 14:00 Dissociation, boundaries, and identity shifts 22:30 Somatic titration, oxytocin, and co-regulation practices 31:00 Capacity, achievement, and health trade-offs 39:30 Reframing fawn and freeze as intelligent responses 47:00 Cyclical needs, rest, and redefining growth 54:00 Integration, tending, and systemic context 59:00 Takeaways and next steps Key Takeaways: Post-traumatic wisdom includes grief, ambiguity, and letting identities evolve, not only resilience. Emotions are constructed from interoception and predictions; safety cues can update those predictions. Small, consistent somatic doses help the system perceive more safety without overwhelm. Fawn and freeze are adaptive; meeting them with curiosity reduces shame and supports change. Capacity building is relational; co-regulation and oxytocin-supportive practices can expand what feels possible. Faith is a big part of our relationship to money. And this is something that I've had come up with my students over the years, not surprisingly, as they're working through their beliefs around money. So many of the messages we receive about money come from this space -- either from what we witnessed growing up in a faith community or from experiences within our current community. And sometimes these beliefs are ones that folks don't want to hold anymore, but they've already shaped how they think about money and the world. In today's episode, faith-based private practice consultant Whitney Owens and I get into how she reconciles her Christian faith with charging premium fees and building wealth in her group practice. She shares what it means to be a financially successful Christian, and how being such elicits feelings of guilt. We also discuss messages about frugality, specifically in Christianity. The Intersection of Faith and Financial Success (00:04:17) Enhancing Impact through Team and Services (00:10:26) Balancing Faith and Financial Success (00:14:16) The Relationship Between Premium Fees and Client Commitment (00:17:32) Stewardship and Relationships: Impact of Financial Earnings (00:22:12) Money Management Aligned with Christian Values (00:28:15) Navigating Emotional Struggles of Financial Success (00:31:38) Transformative Profit-First Money Management Strategies How Stewardship with Money Impacts Your Relationships and Community Faith and money are intertwined in our daily lives, whether we realize it or not. By intentionally aligning our financial decisions with our spiritual values, we become more financially confident and experience feelings of security and fulfillment. As a result, we're more likely to make decisions that benefit others. When we charge higher rates, for example, we are taking care of ourselves and valuing our worth, which allows us to better serve our clients and ultimately provide them with the best care possible. It's a cycle of self-care leading to better client care, creating a positive impact on both sides of the relationship."When we don't charge our full fees, we don't feel good about ourselves. We are overwhelmed because we have to see more clients. So it's the idea that we're actually serving our clients by serving ourselves. It's like circular, right? Cyclical." - Whitney OwensIn addition to implementing profit-first strategies in business, creating a supportive team and culture is crucial to achieving financial success, because it sets the tone for how financial decisions are made. When team members feel supported and valued in their workplace, they are more likely to make decisions that align with their values, including their spiritual beliefs.Consider these actions to align your money management habits with your faith and personal values: Invest in marketing services, business consulting, and essential tasks that align with your goals and values to expand your reach and fulfill your missionCreate a supportive team and culture that compensates your team members fairly and promotes enjoyment in your workplaceCharge premium fees for your therapy work to increase client commitment and to allow yourself to show up as your very best self for those you're serving Be a good steward of finances in support of your personal values, using money to care for and support yourself and others, and have a positive impact on issues that matter most to you Manage money based on your mission to do good in the world, balancing frugality and excessive consumptionImplement...

In this special live-recorded episode, actor Luke Cook—known for Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2—joins me for a raw, unfiltered conversation about what it really means to live well. Recorded during A Boundless Evening at HUME Los Angeles, this fireside chat brings together curiosity, science, and honest reflections on health, performance, and purpose. We start with the rhythms of daily life—how I approach mornings, training, and eating while traveling—and why balance beats perfection. You’ll hear how my cyclical keto approach helps me stay sharp and grounded while still enjoying the moments that matter. From movement habits and fasted training to the little environmental tweaks that keep me active throughout the day, we explore how health can be both sustainable and joyful. We dive into the evolving world of biohacking—cold plunges, nootropics, and stress adaptation—through both skepticism and lived experience. The conversation goes deeper than supplements or science. We reflect on the connection between discipline and creativity, the balance between ambition and family, and why my personal philosophy centers on healthspan, not just lifespan.Full show notes: https://bengreenfieldlife.com/firesidechatla/ Episode Sponsors: Pique: Pique Teas are where plants and science intersect to produce teas and supplements of unrivaled efficacy, purity, and convenience. Talley Leger believes the current bull market has room to run, despite recent pullbacks and concerns about rich valuations. Leger cites catalysts supporting the market, including better-than-expected economic data, easing trade policy uncertainty, and accommodative monetary policy. He also likes the tech sector, specifically Nvidia (NVDA) and Intel (INTC), citing their strong fundamentals and recent momentum. Other names on his list include Amazon (AMZN), Caterpillar (CAT), and JPMorgan Chase (JPM). Leger acknowledges potential near-term risks, such as government funding anxiety, but advises investors to buy into any weakness.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. In this episode of Jump Start with Jeff, Dr. Jeff Buske unpacks how to break free from the repetitive patterns that drain us and step into a life of power, productivity, and liberation.Dr. Buske shares how real transformation doesn't come from quick motivation or surface-level strategies, but from creating frameworks, habits, and accountability that fuel long-term growth. He explains the journey from information → fascination → motivation → inspiration → transformation → liberation, and why that last step, liberation, is the key to living with consistent energy, deeper intimacy, and purpose-driven productivity.Whether you feel stuck at a plateau or are hungry for your next breakthrough, this episode offers the perspective and tools to get you moving forward with clarity and conviction.Key Takeaways:Why cyclical patterns keep us stuck—and how to finally break themThe difference between external motivation and internal inspirationHow to “stack W's” (small daily wins) that compound into massive transformationThe framework that turns productivity into a positive, self-sustaining cycleWhy liberation, not just success, should be your ultimate goal“I can motivate the shit out of you. But I'm not here just to tickle your ears. I'm here to guide you past inspiration, into transformation, and ultimately to liberation.”If this episode fired you up, don't just keep it to yourself. Kyle welcomes Tyler, also known as Base Forge, who is recognized for his unique perspectives on ancient knowledge and cyclical time. The conversation covers various intriguing topics, including Tyler's background in Kansas, his path towards spiritual awakening through ancient esoteric knowledge, and how he connected these ideas with his music career. The discussion delves into concepts of cyclical time, the Great Year, and different ages ranging from the Golden Age to the Iron Age. Tyler elaborates on his views regarding the advanced construction techniques and purposes of ancient megalithic structures, the significance of harmonics and sacred geometry, and how these structures may have been used for consciousness development rather than mere energy generation. The role of psychedelics, hermetic principles, and the importance of ritual and initiation in ancient cultures are also highlighted. Additionally, Tyler discusses his upcoming vision quest and the importance of responsible usage of psychedelics. The podcast underscores Tyler's mission to help people reconnect with the awe and beauty of existence through his teachings and community offerings. In this episode of the Black Tower Podcast, we dive deep into one of the most thought-provoking themes of The Wheel of Time: the tension between the endless turning of the Wheel and humanity's yearning for progress and change. Is true freedom possible in a world bound by eternal recurrence? Does the Wheel's cycle preserve balance, or does it trap humanity in stagnation? And what happens when individuals or movements dare to push against the Pattern itself? Join us as we explore the philosophical and narrative layers of cyclical time, rebellion, and the hope (or fear) of breaking the Wheel.
Despite some retail investor exuberance, Jimmy Lee sees more optimism than worry, driven by potential tailwinds like lower interest rates and less regulation. He believes this could lead to a pickup in deal activity, consumer confidence, and even a possible run to 7000 on the S&P 500. Lee is also positive on cyclical sectors like industrials and financials, but notes risks from geopolitics and some frothy valuations in the A.I. space.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. Thierry Wizman examines the current levels for the U.S. dollar and assesses the probability of a multi-year decline in dollar strength. He says that weakness "may not be over right now" as global central banks adjust policy and global trade adjusts to a new tariff policy. Thierry also posits that the dollar weakness could be a sign of a dent in "American exceptionalism."======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – / schwabnetwork Follow us on Facebook – / schwabnetwork Follow us on LinkedIn - / schwab-network About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about
The nearly 15% euro-dollar rally in 1H was fueled largely by dollar weakness and a potentially bullish cyclical case for the euro — especially expectations for a supportive fiscal and monetary policy mix — which may continue to support the outlook into 2H. Bloomberg Intelligence's Chief G10 FX Strategist Audrey Childe-Freeman talks to Constantin Bolz, head of G10 FX for UBS' Chief Investment Office, about how evolving euro-area and US fiscal and monetary policy may help euro-dollar strength into 2H and beyond, depending on how the US economic story plays out. They also discuss the de-dollarization trend and how the SNB could address the challenge of an appreciating franc.

In this episode of Mental Matters, host Asekho Toto dives into the intersection of psychedelics and women's health with an expert who has pioneered a revolutionary approach to mental wellness through cyclical microdosing. The conversation illuminates how traditional mental health treatments have historically overlooked the unique biological rhythms of women, treating them as "little men" rather than acknowledging their distinct physiological needs and patterns. The guest shares profound insights into how women's mental health fluctuates throughout their menstrual cycle, with many experiencing heightened anxiety, depression, and other challenging symptoms particularly in the week before menstruation. This biological reality has significant implications for mental health treatment, yet has only recently begun receiving proper scientific attention. After extensive specialized training in menstrual cycles, Leslie Draffin developed a tailored microdosing protocol that works in harmony with these natural rhythms rather than against them. Throughout the discussion, Asekho demonstrates genuine curiosity about psychedelics and their potential impact on mental health, creating space for an educational conversation that challenges misinformation while acknowledging the importance of accurate resources in this emerging field. The guest emphasizes that while research suggests numerous benefits of psychedelics for mental health, the specific benefits each person experiences are uniquely tailored to their individual needs and circumstances.T he episode explores how this cyclical microdosing approach has already shown promising results in the guest's clients, including decreased period pain, reduced cramps and menstrual migraines, and significant improvements in premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) symptoms. For those suffering from PMDD—described as "PMS on steroids"—this approach offers hope for managing severe anxiety, depression, and even suicidal ideation that can emerge cyclically. Beyond the practical applications, the conversation touches on deeper themes of self-acceptance and self-compassion. The guest shares a powerful perspective on witnessing oneself in both moments of greatness and struggle, embracing both as worthy aspects of the human experience. This holistic approach to mental wellness acknowledges both the biochemical and psychological dimensions of healing. The episode concludes with information about a free five-day email course offered by the guest, designed to teach listeners exactly how to microdose in alignment with their menstrual cycles for improved mental health. Whether you're personally interested in alternative approaches to women's mental health or simply seeking to understand the evolving landscape of gender-specific wellness practices, this episode offers valuable insights into how honoring our biological rhythms may be key to more effective mental health care.Sponsors and important linksSubscribe to my newsletter: https://mentalmattershostedbyasekhototo.substack.com/Want to be a guest on Mental Matters Hosted By Asekho Toto? Worship Leader Taylor Cummings highlights how God, through Christ's own suffering, equips us with comfort in our trials so that we can extend that same compassion to others. He reminds us that sharing in both pain and consolation deepens our connection and strengthens the body of Christ.
Life often feels like a straight line, with milestones marking our progress from point A to B. But what if we shifted that perspective? Embracing the cyclical nature of life allows us to recognize that our journeys are not linear but circular, encompassing growth, renewal, and the beauty of coming back to ourselves. As seasons change and tides ebb and flow, so too do our experiences, emotions, and aspirations. In this episode, we'll delve into how this transformative perspective alleviates the pressures of linear progression and fosters resilience and a deeper connection to our authentic selves.
For nearly ten years, Kevin Ingram knocked on S&P's door, arguing that FM's A‑plus rating undervalued its balance sheet. Other agencies, such as Fitch, already had the mutual insurer at AA. Each visit, Ingram presented fresh data; each time, the agency hesitated, wary of revising a long‑standing mark. Last summer, six months after FM dropped “Global” from its name, S&P finally moved, lifting the company to AA‑minus—a hard‑won validation.Throughout the campaign, Ingram stressed a core belief: “capital is our product.” By capital, he means policyholders' surplus—the net assets that back every policy. That surplus, he tells us, doubled from $12 billion in 2014 to $26 billion today, even as insured exposure expanded far more modestly. The widening cushion lets FM keep more risk on its own books, ride out catastrophe swings, and focus on clients committed to engineering‑led resilience instead of chasing marginal premium growth. That discipline took shape after the 2017‑18 catastrophe losses, when Ingram led a rigorous re‑underwriting that bolstered profitability and reserves. Drawing on decades of loss data and hundreds of engineer‑captured risk points, his team now deploys AI models to rank mitigation projects for FM's 1,600 core policyholders. Those accounts generate over $8 billion of the company's $11.2 billion (gross operating) revenue.

Can the U.S. equity market break out of its expected range? Our CIO and Chief U.S. Equity Strategist Mike Wilson looks at whether the Trump administration's shifting tariff policy and Fed uncertainty will continue weighing down stocks.Read more insights from Morgan Stanley. ----- Transcript -----Welcome to Thoughts on the Market. I'm Mike Wilson, Morgan Stanley's CIO and Chief U.S. Equity Strategist. Today, I will discuss what it will take for the US equity market to break out of the 5000-5500 range. It's Monday, April 21st at 11:30am in New York. So, let's get after it.Last week, we focused on our view that the S&P 500 was likely to remain in a 5000-5500 range in the near term given the constraints on both the upside and the downside. First, on the upside, we think it will be challenging for the index to break through prior support of 5500 given the recent acceleration lower in earnings revisions, uncertainty on how tariff negotiations will progress and the notion that the Fed appears to be on hold until it has more clarity on the inflationary and growth impacts of tariffs and other factors. At the same time, we also believe the equity market has been contemplating all of these challenges for much longer than the consensus acknowledges. Nowhere is this evidence clearer than in the ratio of Cyclical versus Defensive stocks as discussed on this podcast many times. In fact, the ratio peaked a year ago and is now down more than 40 per cent.Coming into the year, we had a more skeptical view on growth than the consensus for the first half due to expectations that appeared too rosy in the context of policy sequencing that was likely to be mostly growth negative to start. Things like immigration enforcement, DOGE, and tariffs. Based on our industry analysts' forecasts, we were also expecting AI Capex growth to decelerate, particularly in the first half of the year when growth rate comparisons are most challenging. Recall the Deep Seek announcement in January that further heightened investor concerns on this factor. And given the importance of AI Capex to the overall growth expectations of the economy, this dynamic remains a major consideration for investors. A key point of today's episode is that just as many were overly optimistic on growth coming into the year, they may be getting too pessimistic now, especially at the stock level. As the breakdown in cyclical stocks indicate, this correction is well advanced both in price and time, having started nearly a year ago. Now, with the S&P 500 closing last week very close to the middle of our range, the index appears to be struggling with the uncertainty of how this will all play out.Equities trade in the future as they try to discount what will be happening in six months, not today. Predicting the future path is very difficult in any environment and that is arguably more difficult today than usual, which explains the high volatility in equity prices. The good news is that stocks have discounted quite a bit of slowing at this point. It's worth remembering the factors that many were optimistic about four-to-give months ago—things like de-regulation, lower interest rates, AI productivity and a more efficient government—are still on the table as potential future positive catalysts. And markets have a way of discounting them before it's obvious. However, there is also a greater risk of a recession now, which is a different kind of slowdown that has not been fully priced at the index level, in our view. So as long as that risk remains elevated, we need to remain balanced with our short-term views even if we believe the odds of a positive outcome for growth and equities are more likely than consensus does over the intermediate term. Hence, we will continue to range trade.Further clouding the picture is the fact that companies face more uncertainty than they have since the early days of the pandemic. As a result, earnings revisions breadth is now at levels rarely witnessed and approaching downside extremes assuming we avoid a recession. Keep in mind that these revisions peaked almost a year ago, well before the S&P 500 topped, further supporting our view that this correction is much more advanced than acknowledged by the consensus. This is why we are now more interested in looking at stocks and sectors that may have already discounted a mild recession even if the broader index has not. Bottom line, if a recession is averted, markets likely made their lows two weeks ago. If not, the S&P 500 will likely take those lows out. There are other factors that could take us below 4800 in a bear case outcome, too. For example, the Fed decides to raise rates due to tariff-driven inflation; or the term premium blows out, taking 10-year Treasury yields above 5 per cent without any growth improvement.Nevertheless, we think recession probability is the wildcard now that markets are wrestling with. In S&P terms, we think 5000-5500 is the appropriate range until this risk is either confirmed or refuted by the hard data – with labor being the most important. In the meantime, stay up the quality curve with your equity portfolio. Thanks for listening. If you enjoy the podcast, leave us a review wherever you listen and share Thoughts on the Market with a friend or colleague today.
Before we jump in… if you're feeling stuck in people-pleasing, perfectionism, or self-sabotage—this is your sign. I'm hosting a free How To Stop Feeling Like Shit 5-day challenge to help you stop abandoning yourself and start showing up like the confident, grounded woman you're meant to be. One small (but mighty) shift each day. Five days. Big energy. Real momentum. Join us HERE. ********** We've reached the final lesson in my 10-part series on Coming Home To Yourself, and this one brings it all together. If you've ever thought, “I should be further along by now,” you're not alone, and you're not failing. Growth is layered, not linear. It's messy, spirally, and sometimes uncomfortable, but that's not a problem, it's the process. In this episode, I'm exploring what real healing and fulfillment look like. You'll hear why chasing big, sexy goals can be a form of self-abandonment, how tiny experiments can shift everything, and why self-compassion is one of the most powerful tools we have. Most of all, I'll remind you that the important thing isn't the pace, it's that you keep showing up. Because coming home to yourself is the success story. What you'll hear about in this episode: Growth is Cyclical, Not a Checklist: It's not about fixing the same thing over and over, but meeting familiar patterns with more awareness, strength, and self-compassion each time. The Myth of the Big, Sexy Goal: It's not about achieving X to finally feel worthy—it's about noticing when chasing the goal is really just abandoning yourself in disguise. Tiny Experiments over Giant Goals: It's not about massive overhauls, it's about trying small, time-bound shifts like “do this for 7 days” and letting curiosity lead. Your brain thrives on it, and showing up is the success. Self-Compassion & Forgiveness Are the Real Flex: You're not behind, late, or broken. Growth means making space for grief, rage, shame, and fear, and forgiving the past you who was doing their best. Let Go to Move Forward: It's not quitting, it's trusting. Letting go makes space for aligned goals, deeper love, and the unshakable truth that no matter what, you've got you.
