This week it’s my pleasure to bring you a conversation with Sarah Hornby of Bikepack Canada. Bikepack Canada was formed in 2016 by Sarah’s late husband, Ryan Correy, as a way to bring the Canadian bikepacking community together. To offer a place where people could find information about this exploding activity called, Bikepacking. Ryan passed away on April 27th, 2018 after an intense nine month fight against colon cancer. The community was devastated about the loss of this amazing husband, friend and athlete. Ryan’s positive energy and passion for the things he poured his energy into was palpable, which is why he was able to build such a uniquely close knit group of cyclists, like he did with Bikepack Canada.Since Ryan’s death, nothing will stitch together the last couple of years of Sarah’s better than the short film, Choosing to Live. This film, produced and Directed by Jeff Bartlet of Jeff Bartlet Media and Matthew Clark of Stirl and Rae Media Haus, is a story off reconnection and healing. “The idea or riding the routes in his guide book really resonated with me as a way to connect with Ryan through his very last project.”In this episode we chat about about her recent projects and how much they helped her to heal. We also chat about Bikepack Canada’s plans moving forward and what we can expect to see!I really enjoyed catching up with Sarah, and I hope you enjoy this chat. I‘m grateful to her. I think everyone in the Canadian bikepacking community is. Personally, I am so grateful that she gave me the opportunity of hosting the Bikepack Canada podcast. This not only allowed me to connect with all of you but was a healing process of my own. Thank you, Sarah, and thanks for listening.

We had special guest Ryan from MondayQInfo on today. MondayQInfo is a twitter account he made that follows all the Monday qualifiers and mini tour events and providing insight into the players that play them. Ryan shared some incredible stories from Erik Barnes donating blood when he has time off to players living in their cars. Since Ryan's a Chicago guy we obviously had to talk about The Last Dance and I think you'd be surprised to hear his thoughts. Enjoy and don't forget... With Saints QB Drew Brees setting a new NFL career touchdowns mark, Ryan Clark discusses whether or not records alone are enough to consider Drew Brees at the top of the "Greatest QB" debate. Since Ryan isn't a Saints fan, he is joined by one -- Matt Moscona, who hosts afternoon drive on ESPN Radio stations throughout Louisiana. Somehow, this convo included supermodels, the guys singing "Be Like Mike" and yes, their QB Rankings.

Ryan, Morgan, and Felix are joined by Clearwater Beach Public Information Coordinator Jason Beisel. Since Ryan has been a bit of a "Debbie Downer" on our local beaches due to things like flesh-eating bacteria and fecal bacteria, Jason offered up the positive features they have to offer.
00:00:00 - After seeing a twitter thread about a recent publication, Ryan invited Jesse Alston (@IntegratEcology) on the show to talk about that paper and his scientific journey. They met up in Laramie and started with the latter, which is this segment. 00:33:30 - A brief interlude wherein Ryan is joined by Joe to discuss beverages. Joe is having leftover apple juice, and Ryan is having a cocktail in a can that he gussied up with some fancy homemade ice. 00:42:05 - Since Ryan and Jesse were chatting at Coal Creek Tap in Laramie, they’re also having a drink. Ryan is having a Wyoming Toad Rye IPA, which prompts a discussion of a very rare montane amphibian. Jesse is having the Molly Blond Belgian Blonde, which seems to involve a dog. The rest of the segment is spent discussing Jesse et al.’s new paper which challenges some of the things we’ve talked about before regarding carnivore reintroduction and its knock-on effects. And be sure to check out Jesse’s podcast Field Surveys. 01:10:04 - PaleoPOWs are a lot like reintroducing a species, you never quite know if it’ll work out. After a quick reading of a twitter exchange with Kendal T., Joe reads an e-mail from Karl M. about the fraught topic of our increasing use of robots for war (Joe recommends the movie Good Kill for further exploration of the topic). We get to lighten things up a little with another e-mail from Zoe S. and also by granting a Patreon thesis to Patron Tom D. who has written a tome titled: Monitoring the sociological impacts of zombie reintroduction to the sustainability school walking routes for students of the New California Republic (NCR) via Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). Thanks, Tom! If you need a good summer read, Ryan wrote a review of Underland for Science Magazine, which you can purchase via our Amazon Affiliate link. More cool rewards await you if you decide to support us on our Patreon! Music credit: Lamb And Wolf - Poddington Bear
Ryan attempts a coup that is so successful he ended up editing this episode. Since Ryan is editing that means no time stamps. I'm not sure anyone uses those...damagecontrolpodcast@gmail.com if it's useful to have the timestamps.
Merciful people have compassion for the hurting, and they take action. Jesus said those kinds of people will be shown mercy. Since Ryan is the most compassionate person that has ever lived, he teaches us how to become a compassionate person ;)
Since Ryan isn't here to babble endlessly about the Suicide Squad, we take the opportunity to describe our dream superhero movies. Starring Brian Altano, Scott Bromley, and Max Scoville.

00:00:00 - Ryan is join by J. Leighton Reid to talk about birds, forests, and conservation. The first paper discussed is about how forest restoration in the tropics benefits birds. 00:24:34 - Speaking of feeling restored, how about beer? Leighton pulls off something that few guests or even co-hosts have ever accomplished: he has a beer Ryan hasn't heard of, namely a Alphadelic IPA by Hop Valley Brewing Company. Ryan also has a beer hailing from Oregon, a Class of '88 Belgian Style Ale from Deschutes Brewery et al. 00:26:05 - Next up we cover this new technique of applied nucleation, where you plant small patches of trees instead of trying to replant the whole forest. Fewer trees but better results? Talk about a win-win! If you want to know more about the project, you can read about it here and if you'd like to donate directly, you can do so here! 00:55:38 - PaleoPOWs are a lot like forest restoration, we're not quite sure how its done but we're really hoping it works out. Since Ryan is flying is solo this week there's only one entry to be had, but it's a good one. Clifford E. has started a recurring donation, which is hugely awesome for us and for you because it makes the show that much better, so thanks, Cliff! We're also excited to announce that we'll performing a live show in San Francisco as part of the 2014 Bay Area Science Festival in conjunction with the Nerd Nite Block Party. Check the link for details and please stop by if you can! Last up, we're trying to give some games away to donors, if you would like the really cool Indie puzzle game The Bridge and have ever donated to the show, e-mail Ryan for your free copy! Thanks for listening and be sure to check out the Brachiolope Media Network for more great science podcasts!
