We're back after a short break, and David drinks the Costco-exclusive Deschutes Kirkland Signature Helles-Style Lager.Kirkland Signature Helles-Style Lager is a recipe from the Oregon-based Deschutes Brewery that won a gold medal at the 2023 Great American Beer Festival. The beer is 4.5% ABV and is a nearly perfect example of the German-inspired style that is both crisp and clean. The Brewers Association annual ranking of the top 50 craft breweries is also out, and we talk about the biggest movers on the list. One of the headlines for David is that Rhinegeist Brewery is now the biggest brewery in Ohio, moving up to 16th overall and passing longtime champ Great Lakes. The focus of this show has always been to tell the stories of beer operations that one day turned off the lights for the last time. I've chosen to be very selective when considering interviewing breweries that are still stirring their mashes. To date, I've only shared 5. There are a lot of reasons why but based on listener feedback, I've decided to look for opportunities to do it where it makes sense to the message of the podcast. So I am excited, pleased and even a little proud to share the story of Deschutes Brewery with you in this episode. Deschutes is one of those rare breweries that you can all but guarantee every other mouth next to you at the craft beer bar has tasted at some point in their craft beer journey. And, kinda miraculously, Deschutes still makes beer that appeals to both the young tongue and the seasoned craft beer fan. Of course, over a 36-year career as a pioneer in craft beer Gary has struggled and failed on his way to becoming number 12 on the Brewer's Association's Top 50 Breweries list. There was so much I didn't know about one of America's oldest craft breweries. And sitting down with Gary was a true pleasure - after which I walked away better able to tell you How NOT To Start A Damn Brewery. And now, here's Gary Fish and the story of Deschutes Brewery in Bend (and Portland) Oregon. In this episode of Friday Night Beers, Tom & Vince try Squeezy Rider from Deschutes Brewery in Bend, Oregon. #ScrubHopTalk Ep. 189 - On this week's "This or That", the boys check out a story about a lady whose dying wish was to have the Grim Reaper at her funeral to be menacing toward her friends and family. Then we see a video of an older guy trying to start a fight with his neighbor and it goes terribly wrong for him, all while Cotton exhibits great hubris. During "What's in the Box?" the guys get into an argument because of what Cotton will and won't collect as he shows off his new bobblehead, bewildering Trox and J. Enjoy! Link in bio. The Abyss 2018 is an Imperial Stout by style. Immeasurable depth and complexity. Hints of molasses, licorice and other alluring flavors make it something not just to quaff, but contemplate. This craft beer is 11.2% ABV and 74 IBUs. In this craft beer review, we will take a look at the color, smell, and taste.
In this episode, Christmas doesn't come early, it comes year-round via Deschutes Brewery's Cellar Reserve beers thanks to guest and barrel program manager, Dustin Jamison. Jamison lords over “Oakland,” the portion of Deschutes' warehouse devoted to oak barrels from which its barrel-aged beers—such as The Abyss, The Dissident, and Black Butte3—emanate from. From bourbon-aged stouts to wine-aged sour beers (to an amphora-aged bockbier), Deschutes's offerings extend far beyond fresh squeezed IPAs into the realm of decidedly un-fresh wood-aged beers.
Gary Fish founded Deschutes Brewery in downtown Bend, Oregon in 1988. It began as a small pub that focused on handcrafted food, house-brewed beer and the purpose of bringing people together. Brian Yaeger is a Source contributor, beer author (including "Oregon Breweries"), beer fest producer and beer-tasting instructor at COCC. Because he's working on doughnut authorship, you'll find he occasionally reviews the local doughnut scene. Yes, he absolutely floats all summer long with a beer in one hand and a doughnut in the other. This week, Yaeger penned a cover story about the long and storied history of Mirror Pond Pale Ale -- one of Deschutes Brewery's oldest beers and one of its best sellers. We talk about the hop, developed by Oregon State University, that helped put Oregon (and Mirror Pond Pale Ale) on the map, what brewers had to say about the beer's flavor evolution over time and more.

Barry and Abigail discuss How to Save a Life by The Fray and sample Mel's Gold Ale, 32958 Hazy IPA, Dubbeldolia, Slow Paddle Porter, and Voluntold Oatmeal Stout from Pareidolia Brewing Co. in Sebastian, Florida. Special thanks to Pete Anderson, Co-Owner and Head Brewer of Pareidolia Brewing Co., for sitting down with us to discuss the history of the brewery! Mel's Gold Ale is named for Mel Fisher, a world-famous American treasure-hunter. Mel Fisher's Treasure Museum is located just up the street from Pareidolia in Sebastian. Sales of Knee Deep in Peaches Smash Beer raised money for StacheStrong, an organization that supports brain cancer research. Knee Deep in Peaches was also a collaboration with Waycross, Georgia, band The Pine Box Dwellers. The band designed the beer's logo and can art. When Barry was recently in Asheville, North Carolina, he visited White Labs Brewing Co., who are known for brewing beers of nearly identical recipes, only altering the yeast, to produce noticeable differences in flavor and aroma. How to Save a Life was once certified as the best-selling digital album of all time at the time, beating the record previously held by Coldplay's X&Y. Abigail saw The Fray live at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, California, in July 2007. Slow Paddle Porter was modeled after Deschutes Brewery's Black Butte Porter. (NSFW) On this episode of Road Sodas Ed and Chris sit down and try a new brew and go over some old news again. This week the new brew was given to them by Ad Astra Brewing Company to try and give their honest opinion on it. For those that have heard the show before, know that they are nothing but honest when it comes to brew reviews. They go over their adventures after the road trip up to Wren House in Prescott. They got more beer and food in downtown Prescott at Lazy G's Brewing, Park Plaza Liquor and Deli, and Ad Astra Brewing Company. Old Breaking News, downtown Mesa is becoming a beer destination. Chris becomes instantly sad at this news, since he no longer lives near there. Ed gets angry about Stone Brewing's Greg Koch "eulogy" style announcement about Marin Brewing closing. The trend of low calorie and N/A beers continues with Guinness and Deschutes Brewery releasing new brews. Another great source of beer, a health blog, puts out the best beer spot in Arizona. Road Sodas: An alcoholic beverage (usually beer or perhaps malt liquor) consumed inside a moving vehicle. This beverage can be consumed by passenger, driver, or both. Road sodas are illegal in most states due to open container laws. Still, they are widely enjoyed as evidenced by all the beer cans littering rural road sides. WHY DOES GOD WANT YOUR HEART??Of all the things God could want most, why does he want your heart above all things? God could demand and have your obedience to every command, he could have your sacrifice for his kingdom and your service to his church and mission. But before and above all that he wants your heart to be in love with him. Why is that? Thankfully, Scripture doesn't leave us guessing. There's a great reason God wants your heart and, if you have any church background, I bet you won't see it coming.EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS3:10 - Two Faulty Views of Life11:23 - The Biblical Truth that Life Comes from Your Heart16:53 - Your Heart Moves You to Action19:55 - Why Accountability Groups Rarely WorkOutro24:06 - Drink of Choice25:28 - Metal MomentLINKS IN THIS EPISODEGo to www.corelifetraining.org/isaiah for class details and registration.Check out Krownn and get their stuff on bandcamp.Get some Abyss at Deschutes Brewery.Come hang with me at The Hoppy Brewer on Main Street in downtown Gresham!Follow Core Life Training on Facebook and Instagram
