This is actually a pretty wild story. During my first year in my PhD, a woman reached out to me through the contact form on my website and was like, "Hey, we're doing similar work! I would love to connect." I starred the email as something I needed to follow up on and then it got completely buried in my inbox. Then, several months later, one of my teachers emailed me and said, "Did you see this dissertation defense coming up? It is on binge eating." I immediately marked it in my calendar as something I had to attend. I arrived at the Zoom dissertation defense and as soon as I see this woman's name I was like, "Why is this person's name sound so familiar?" I sneak off into my inbox and look up her name and lo and behold, it was the same person who emailed me a few months prior. Honestly, I initially felt mortified I had not followed up with her sooner, but I immediately emailed her after the defense was over. We scheduled a Zoom chat and it was amazing how much we had in common. We come from a similar lens that binge eating recovery needs a body-based approach. It is the body and experiencing it internally and externally that is missing from most recovery modalities. In this week's episode, I chat with Dr. Kristina Dobyns, PhD, MA, Registered Somatic Movement Therapist, certified Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, and certified Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention facilitator, about: What worked and didn't work in Kristina's binge eating recovery journeyWhat she discovered in her research on binge eatingThe importance of building somatic awareness and interoceptionThe role of sensory strategiesUtilizing nutrition as a part of binge eating recoveryChallenging conventional recovery approachesYou can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/body-based-strategies-for-binge-eatingYou're about to receive some game changing binge eating recovery strategies and I hope it feels helpful! With Compassion and Empathy, Stephanie Mara FoxKeep in touch with Kristina here: Website: https://www.BeyondBingeEating.comYoutube: www.BeyondBingeEating.com/@BeyondBingeEatingInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/BeyondBingeEating/FREE Eat-With-Awareness Bundle: https://beyondbingeeating.com/opt-in/Support the showKeep in touch with Stephanie Mara:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/_stephaniemara/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/stephaniemarafoxWebsite: https://www.stephaniemara.com/https://www.somaticeating.com/Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephmara/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@stephaniemarafoxContact: support@stephaniemara.comSupport the show:Become a supporter: https://www.buzzsprout.com/809987/supportAll affiliate links: https://www.stephaniemara.com/resourcesReceive 15% off my fave protein powder with code STEPHANIEMARA at checkout here: https://www.equipfoods.com/STEPHANIEMARAUse my Amazon Affiliate link when shopping on Amazon: https://amzn.to/448IyPlSpecial thanks to Bendsound for the music in this episode. www.bensou...
The march continues as Page Burners dives into Chapters 5 and 6 of The Bonehunters, and Steven Erikson wastes no time raising new questions while deepening old mysteries. This week we discuss the ever-enigmatic Adjunct Tavore and what her soldiers do—and don't—know about her plans. We explore themes of civilization, slavery, and torture, unpack the unsettling philosophy of truth at any cost, and debate whether progress is worth the dangers it unleashes.Elsewhere, Karsa Orlong and Samar Dev continue their uneasy journey, Bottle encounters a mysterious figure whose future could reshape the world, and Paran reunites with Apsalar for one of the novel's most heartfelt moments. We also meet the formidable Faradan Sort, mourn an unexpected loss, and speculate wildly about Sky Keeps, ancient powers, and what exactly is wrong with the moon.As always, this is a full-spoiler discussion for everything we've read in the Malazan series so far, including the novels by Steven Erikson and Ian C. Esslemont that Page Burners has covered.Grab your sword, your deck of dragons, and maybe a drink with Hellian—because things in The Bonehunters are only getting stranger.Next episode: Chapters 7 only. This week on Page Chewing, I'm talking about the books currently on my nightstand and a question every reader eventually faces: why do we reread books we've already finished?I share my ongoing rereads of The Bonehunters and The Darkness That Comes Before, discuss why some stories become comfort reads while others are one-and-done experiences, and explore how our relationship with books changes as we grow older. Are rereads a waste of time, or do great books reveal something new every time we return to them?Along the way, I chat about The Prophet, Lone Wolf and Cub, Carpentry and the Elven Forest, revisiting Fight Club, and why slowing down and appreciating the stories we love might be more important than chasing the next big thing. What are you reading this week? Gwendolyn Dolske and Rudy Salo welcome Casey Berman: former attorney, founder of Leave Law Behind (the leading coaching program helping attorneys transition into non-legal careers), multipreneur, strategy consultant, speaker, and author, for a discussion about work, identity, happiness, and the courage it takes to choose a different life. Casey knows this territory from the inside. He lived it. And he has spent years helping thousands of attorneys find what he calls their Unique Genius, the specific intersection of talent and joy that, when aligned with their work, produces not just professional success but the deeper contentment that a career in law, for many, was never able to provide. What we explore in this episode: The reality of life inside the legal profession, the hours, the pace, the stress, the culture, and why so many attorneys feel trapped even when their career looks successful from the outside What you can actually do with a law degree that doesn't involve practicing law, and why the answer is far broader and more interesting than most law students are ever told: consulting, compliance, legal technology, entrepreneurship, writing, business development, policy, education, coaching, and more than 100 documented alternatives The specific steps Casey recommends for assessing whether your unhappiness is situational (the wrong firm, the wrong practice area, the wrong city) or fundamental (the wrong career entirely), and why getting that diagnosis right is the most important first step How to get feedback from the people in your life, family, friends, colleagues, mentors, to identify what you are genuinely good at, what lights you up, and where your skills create value outside a courtroom or a contract review Bertrand Russell and The Conquest of Happiness, and why Russell's argument that most human unhappiness is self-generated and rooted in the wrong relationship to work maps precisely onto what Casey has observed in the legal profession for over a decade What Russell wrote about the sunk cost of identity: why we must be willing to let go of what we have invested in, emotionally, financially, intellectually, when it's clear it is not our talent or our strength, and why it is not only acceptable but necessary to grieve the self you thought you would be Rudy's perspective as a lawyer who stayed, and his advice for law students: do not let go of what makes you happy, because the time you spend on those things (screenwriting, acting, podcasting) will make you a better lawyer, not a worse one Casey's thoughts on the role of AI in law, what this means for the profession and those going into law. The philosophy of the examined career: what Socrates, Russell, and Casey Berman all agree on about the relationship between self-knowledge, honest feedback, and the possibility of genuine happiness in your work Books Mentioned in this episode (with Amazon Affiliate link): The Conquest of Happiness by Bertrand Russell The Million Dollar One Person Business by Elaine Pofeldt The Ancient Art of Thinking For Yourself: The Power of Rhetoric in Polarized Times by Robin Reames Guest: Casey Berman: founder of Leave Law Behind, the leading coaching program helping attorneys identify and transition into fulfilling non-legal careers. Multipreneur, strategy consultant, speaker, and storyteller. Former attorney. His work has been featured across major media and podcast platforms. Based in San Francisco. Good Is In The Details is hosted by Gwendolyn Dolske, Ph.D. and Rudy Salo — a philosophy, books, and ideas podcast exploring the examined life in the spirit of Socrates.

As many of you know, I went on my first diet when I was 13 years old. It was Weight Watchers and it shifted how I viewed my body for a decade. I saw it as something weak and that I could control. It would take years of nutritional, mind, and body studies to realize my body was never the enemy I was taught to see it as. I sometimes wonder how things might have been different if I had learned as a kid and teenager how to interact with my body and food from a place of trust. I eventually would see a nutritionist when I was twenty years old and it was she who told me sometimes you will overeat and sometimes you may undereat but when you zoom out over a month you'll see that your body got the nutrition it needed. Learning this bodily trust at a younger age might have offered a framework for how to safely land inside of my body rather than constantly leaving it. In this week's Satiated Podcast episode, I chat with The Holistic Kids, four brothers on a mission to educate and empower kids from the inside out, about: Their journey to learning more about holistic healthDiscovering the impact of food on their health and wellbeingTheir revolutionize acronymThe importance of mindfulnessHow they have navigated technology and social media when everyone around them is using it more and moreThe role of nature, stress management, and play in healthYou can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/4-teens-on-a-mission-to-revolutionize-teen-healthI found it fascinating to hear from four teens about what they're noticing about what it is like to be a teenager these days. Then fitness culture doubles down and provides the message that you can shape your body to be whatever you want it to be, you just have to put up with messages like no pain, no gain and a complete disconnection from your body, how it feels, and what resonates with it. I know I spent years and years in this ping pong game of diets and body shaping. Then, saying F this, swinging the pendulum to the opposite side and eating everything I had deprived and barely moving my body, only to still feel horrible that I went crawling back to a diet again because I had no clue what else to do. There is a lot that gets sacrificed seeing the body as a project and this realization often only occurs after months and years when you realize you don't know who you are anymore, how to exist in your body, or what it actually needs. Yet, releasing the habitual relationship with the body as something to change and alter will also potentially change your relationships, the environments you've been interacting with, and the conversations you engage in. It isn't that easy when everyone around you is also in their own body project to say, "hey, ya know what, I'm done working on my body." In this week's episode, I chat with Savala Nolan, writer, author, public speaker, and professor at UC Berkeley about: The journey of recovering from diet cultureUnderstanding the language and psychological impact of dietingEnding the body project and facing the fears and cost of body liberationQuestioning societal normsPractical steps toward body liberationYou can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/breaking-free-from-diet-cultureThis was such a fantastic conversation. Savala describes exiting diet culture in a way that I've never heard someone capture what it is actually like and what a person may come to face in the process. In this episode of Page Burners, the crew continues their journey through The Bonehunters by Steven Erikson, covering Chapters 3 and 4. The discussion explores one of the biggest questions surrounding the Malazan series: what exactly makes its storytelling feel so different from other fantasy epics? The panel dives into the series' sprawling structure, massive cast, thematic throughlines, and whether Malazan even has a true “main character.”The conversation also examines Apsalar's complicated relationship with Cotillion, the emotional fallout of possession and identity, and the tangled connections between Apsalar, Cotillion, and Cutter. Along the way, the group discusses the ever-entertaining Telorast and Curdle, the mysteries surrounding Urko, Karsa's encounter with a K'Chain Che'Malle Short-Tail, and the increasingly science-fiction-like discoveries involving Icarium and Mappo's exploration of ancient sky keeps. From character analysis and worldbuilding mysteries to theories and the future of the series, this episode is packed with speculation, laughs, and plenty of Malazan deep-dives.Next Episode: Chapters 5 & 6 of The Bonehunters.Podcast equipment used (Amazon Affiliate links):Rodecaster DuoRode PSA1+ Professional Studio ArmRode Procaster Microphone
In this episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosts Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton talk about a physical consequence of the first responder career that does not get nearly enough attention: chronic inflammation (Amazon Affiliate) — what it is, what causes it, and what it is quietly doing to the long-term health of the people who serve. Most first responders are aware that the job is physically demanding. But fewer understand that chronic stress, sleep disruption, irregular schedules, poor nutrition, and repeated trauma exposure do not just affect mood and mental health — they trigger a systemic inflammatory response inside the body that over time contributes to serious and life-altering physical conditions. This episode connects the dots between the demands of the job and the health consequences that follow years later.

In this episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosts Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton talk about one of the most deeply rooted and most damaging patterns in first responder culture: the fear of asking for help (Amazon Affiliate) and the very real personal, relational, and career costs that fear quietly accumulates over time. This is not about weakness. This is not about laziness. This is about a culture that has spent decades teaching its people that needing support is a liability, that vulnerability is a risk, and that the strongest thing you can do is handle it alone. This episode names that culture directly, unpacks where that fear comes from, and talks honestly about what it is going to take to finally put it down.

In this episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosts Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton talk about one of the heaviest and least discussed burdens in first responder work: the decisions that cannot be undone, the calls that replay on a loop, and the weight of outcomes that live permanently in the mind (Amazon Affiliate) of the person who was there. Every first responder carries them. The split-second choice that went wrong. The moment where a different decision might have changed everything. The call that ended in a way no one wanted. This episode does not offer easy answers — because there are none. But it does offer something most first responders never get: an honest, direct conversation about what it means to carry something you cannot put down and cannot go back and change.
I have often felt like talking about self love can feel frustrating and confusion. What does loving oneself actually mean and look like? Early in my twenties, I think I thought self love looked and felt like self discipline. I went to yoga and meditated almost every day, I was strict with myself on what and when I would eat, I went to bed early and woke up early. From the outside, it looked like I deeply loved myself through how I cared for myself but that it not the way it felt. I felt trapped, depressed, and disconnected. My routine wasn't bringing me joy or love, it brought short term safety. And that bubble would burst if I did anything outside of that routine where I would then be so cruel with myself. Self love may show up as an act, but now I experience it as a felt sense. It feels like a warmth, a closeness, and an appreciation of my body for all that it does and navigates every day.In this week's episode, I chat with Lulu Essey, Speaker, Mindset Advisor, and host of The Lulu Essey Podcast , about: Understanding the difference between self love and self careThe practice of staying with yourself in all emotions, sensations, and reactionsNavigating discomfortThe role of safety in self loveThe courage to face inner struggles and the importance of asking for supportYou can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/what-self-love-really-is-and-how-to-embody-it-every-dayHope you enjoy this week's episode and talk to you more soon! In this episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosts Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton talk about the version of the job nobody puts in the brochure — the emotional, psychological, and relational realities that hit new first responders hard (Amazon Affiliate) and early, often without any warning and without anyone around them willing to name what is happening. The academy prepares you for the law. Field training prepares you for the work. But nothing fully prepares you for what the job does to your mind, your relationships, your worldview, and your sense of self in those first critical years. This episode is the conversation rookies needed before they pinned on the badge — and the one that veterans wish someone had with them years ago.

In this episode of Good Is In The Details, Gwendolyn Dolske sits down with Karen Olson — founder and CEO emeritus of Family Promise, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to helping homeless and low-income families, whose organization has trained and mobilized over one million volunteers over the past thirty years to provide services to homeless families, and author of Meant for More: Following Your Heart and Finding Your Purpose, to have the conversation about homelessness that most people are too uncomfortable, too misinformed, or too distant to have. The myths Karen dismantles in this conversation: The homeless are lazy. The homeless are addicted and choose not to get help. Homelessness is an individual failure rather than a systemic one. The people on the street are strangers with no history and no future. Karen has spent thirty years learning the truth. Family Promise has helped more than a quarter of a million people annually, and in that work Karen has come to know her clients the way most of us know our neighbors: by name, by story, by the specific combination of circumstances and choices and bad luck and systemic failure that brought them to where they are. She calls them her friends. In a culture that speaks of homeless people as a mess to be cleaned up, as a problem to be managed, as a category rather than a collection of individuals with names and histories and futures, Karen Olson calls them her friends. And she means it. What we explore in this episode: Who is actually homeless in America, and why the answer will surprise you. Children. Veterans. Families. People who work full-time jobs that pay less than the cost of a roof over their head The drug and alcohol addiction myth, what Karen has actually observed about addiction and homelessness, why addiction makes it harder for people to accept help, and the conditions under which she has watched people move away from it when genuine opportunity is offered The policy dimension: how government decisions about mental health treatment, addiction services, affordable housing, and the minimum wage are not separate from the homelessness crisis, they are its architecture Why the cost of living has outpaced income for entire categories of employment, and what that means for who ends up on the street Why this book is not about guilt or moral obligation, it is a gentle but firm call to action, an invitation rather than an indictment, asking simply: what if the smallest acts of kindness aren't small at all? Why kindness toward yourself is where the work of kindness toward others begins, and how that insight connects to the deepest traditions of moral philosophy A deeper exploration of Kant's ethics and how they apply to homelessness, compassion, and our obligations to one another is coming to Patreon (exclusively for members of The Examined Life). This book is about human connection. It is about recognizing the invisible and understanding that sometimes the smallest acts of kindness aren't small at all. And it is about the most Socratic thing a person can do: stop, pay attention, learn someone's name, and let that moment change you. Guest: Karen Olson — founder and CEO emeritus of Family Promise, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to helping homeless and low-income families, whose organization has trained and mobilized over one million volunteers over the past thirty years. Recipient of the 1992 Points of Light Award from President George H.W. Bush, the New Jersey Governor's Pride Award in Social Services, and the Jefferson Award from the American Institute for Public Service. Profiled by CBS News. Featured in Courage Is Contagious by Congressman John Kasich. Author of Meant for More: Following Your Heart and Finding Your Purpose. Good Is In The Details is hosted by Gwendolyn Dolske, Ph.D. and Rudy Salo — a philosophy, books, and ideas podcast exploring the examined life in the spirit of Socrates.
Do you enjoy a good love story? I know I do! If I am completely honest, I am a sucker for the Hallmark Channel. I think many of us would admit that we want a happily ever after. We want someone to desire to be with us and love us unconditionally. Back in summer of 2017, I read a book called The Story; it is a chronological version of the Bible in one long story. I read it at the same time as I read, The Heart of the Story by Randy Frazee. Did you know that the Bible could be looked at as one good Love Story? No, it is not cheesy like the Hallmark Channel; instead, it is about a God who desires a relationship with you. He loves you so much that the entire book is about His love story of redemption. I highly recommend reading these books-- it would be a great summer read! I remember in 2017 it took me the whole summer, but it was well worth the time! I hope and pray that these books make the Bible come alive for you again and give you a fresh new perspective on the Bible. In this episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosts Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton talk about something that does not get said directly enough in law enforcement and emergency services: sometimes the environment you work inside of is part of what is making you struggle (Amazon Affiliate). Not the calls. Not the danger. Not the public. The culture inside the walls of your own department. The unwritten rules about who you are supposed to be, how you are supposed to handle things, and what happens when you do not fall in line. This episode takes an honest look at how toxic department culture develops, what it does to the people inside it, and how to protect yourself when the place that is supposed to have your back becomes part of the weight you are carrying.
I've been through a similar trajectory that so many have in food and body image recovery. In my twenties, I got to a place where food was less of a concern. I wasn't skipping meals anymore and I was balancing those meals and eating all macronutrients. I felt much more grounded and regulated. But, the body image struggles continued to hang around. I felt good in my body but I still hated the way my body looked. So, I tried every mainstream approach. I tried the stronger over skinny approach where I lifted a lot of heavy weights and gained a lot of muscle. Yet still, it felt like it was never enough. So, I tried the unconditional body love approach and tried to love my body as it was. No matter how much I tried to challenge my internalized beliefs about my body, nothing would budge. I still looked in the mirror every day and internally said, "ick". When I started somatic therapy, it wasn't with the intention of trying to heal my body image. I was focused on healing from a trauma response. What I wasn't expecting was that I would find myself caring less and less about how my body looked the safer I felt. In this week's episode, I chat about: A somatic, nervous system, attachment perspective to body image struggles Research that points to body image struggles are more about alterations in your brain and nervous system than it is about your body Strategies to increase interoception, a key part of body image recoveryYou can read the transcript to this episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/reframe-your-reflectionI've opened the doors back up for the next 48 hours until midnight on Tuesday 5/26 to the Somatic Eating® Program. The first class has already occurred so you will be able to watch the replay of the first class and reach out in the already active community to ask questions and receive support. Something I wished I had as I navigated my food and body image interactions was someone who would have guided me on how to listen to myself, rather than give me a bunch of advice that didn't work for my body. That is what I do in the program: support you in cultivating trust in yourself that you know what is best for you and how to discover that for yourself after you've been away from your body for years. In this episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosts Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton talk about a reality that has fundamentally changed what it means to work in law enforcement (Amazon Affiliate) and emergency services today: being filmed — constantly, publicly, and often without context — and what that persistent scrutiny does to the mind over time. Body cameras. Bystander phones. Social media clips edited for outrage. The modern first responder operates in an environment where every decision, every word, and every reaction is potentially one viral moment away from becoming a national headline. This episode explores the psychological weight of that reality and what it is doing to the people who still show up anyway.
In this episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosts Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton talk about something every first responder deserves to understand but rarely gets explained in plain language: what repeated trauma exposure (Amazon Affiliate) actually does to the brain over time. This is not about being broken. This is about biology. When the brain is exposed to trauma repeatedly over the course of a career, it adapts — and those adaptations show up in ways that affect memory, emotion, relationships, decision-making, and physical health. Understanding what is happening inside your brain is one of the most important steps toward understanding yourself.

In this episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosts Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton talk about a problem that has existed in first responder culture for decades and is still costing lives today: the stigma around mental health (Amazon Affiliate) that keeps officers, firefighters, and EMS professionals from asking for the help they need. Despite growing awareness, despite more resources, and despite more open conversations than ever before — stigma is still winning. First responders are still suffering in silence, still choosing isolation over vulnerability, and still dying because the culture around them made asking for help feel more dangerous than the job itself. This episode does not sugarcoat it. It names it directly and talks about what it is actually going to take to change it.

In this episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosts Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton talk about something many first responders already know from experience but rarely say out loud: sometimes the only support that actually lands is coming from someone who has been exactly where you are (Amazon Affiliate). Therapy helps. Chaplains help. Family helps. But there is a specific kind of relief that only happens when you are sitting across from someone who has worn the same uniform, worked the same shifts, and carried the same weight. This episode explores why peer support works when other resources fall short — and why investing in it may be one of the most important things a department and an individual officer can do.
