The Karmelo Anthony verdict has everybody talking, and Carrie and Meg are not holding back. In this episode, the girls break down the Frisco track meet stabbing that took 17-year-old Austin Metcalf's life and led to Carmelo Anthony's 35-year sentence, and they're coming at it from every angle: the race debate, the all-white jury, the GoFundMe controversy, and what the justice system really looks like up close. It's a hard, honest conversation about bullying, bad decisions, grief, racism, and a court system that doesn't always get it right. In this episode of Zone 7, Sheryl McCollum is joined by Caroline McCollum and Huck McCollum to talk about the case involving three horses who were stabbed during a barrel racing event at South Point Casino in Las Vegas. Caroline, a longtime horse rider and criminology student, shares her perspective on what it means to compete with and care for these animals, and how the open, trusting culture of barn life can become a vulnerability. Huck, a juvenile court intake officer and former public defender investigator, explains how a case like this may move through the justice system, including mental health evaluations, prior behavior, and the role social media could play. Together, they look at the trauma this leaves on both riders and horses, the security gaps it exposes, and why animal cruelty cases raise concerns about future violence. Highlights: (0:00) Sheryl McCollum welcomes Caroline and Huck McCollum to Zone 7 and introduces the Las Vegas horse stabbing case (1:00) Three horses, Sully, Detail, and Rocket, are stabbed at South Point Casino and police quickly identify a suspect (3:15) Caroline and Huck bring their own field experience, from horse riding and juvenile court to wildlife forensic training (4:30) Inside the open, social world of competitive riding and why barn access can create security concerns (6:15) Caroline weighs in on animal cruelty as a possible red flag for deeper behavioral concerns (7:30) Huck explains why police withheld the suspect’s name and how being weeks away from turning 18 could affect the case (8:15) Mental health history, school records, prior behavior, and what juvenile court may examine (9:45) The “crush theory” and how months of messages may point to fixation before the attack (13:45) Premeditation, the suspected weapon, and the suspect’s actions after leaving the barn (16:45) Caroline explains why the placement of the wounds matters and how close the horses came to dying (19:30) The permanence of social media, including how posts, messages, and saved chats could help investigators understand the suspect’s behavior (24:45) What this case may change for barn access, event credentials, cameras, and future horse show security Enjoying Zone 7? In the early morning hours of July 4, 1925, the crowd at The Pickwick Club in Boston were celebrating the holiday at the “Before-the-Fourth” dance when roughly fifty couples took to the dance floor for one of the final songs of the night. With so much revelry and vibrations from the dancing, no one noticed the subtle sounds distressed infrastructure makes just before a tragedy, and even if they had, there likely wasn't enough time to avoid the disaster. Around 3:30 am, the ceiling above them collapsed, as the entire five-story building came down on top of them, killing forty-four people and injuring countless more. At the time, the Pickwick Club disaster was the deadliest building collapse and one of the worst accidents in in the city's history. It was followed by large investigation, during which the disaster was temporarily blamed on the Charleston, and a sensational trial aimed at punishing those responsible. However, in the one hundred years since the disaster, the tragedy at the Pickwick Club has been largely forgotten, overshadowed by larger and more devastating accidents. This episode is a wild ride, folks. We're talking geopolitics, international relations, and a dash of current events. The speaker takes us on a journey from the Strait of Hormuz to the streets of Belfast, covering everything in between. Buckle up, because this episode is a real doozy. The conversation starts with a lighthearted discussion about the speaker's substack, where they're sharing exclusive content with their loyal listeners. But things quickly take a turn for the serious as they dive into the escalating tensions between the US and Iran. The speaker breaks down the latest developments, including the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the potential implications for the global economy. We also touch on the topic of disparate impact, a concept that's been making headlines in the legal world. The speaker explains how a seemingly neutral rule can still be discriminatory if it has a disproportionate impact on certain groups. This leads to a discussion about the importance of equal protection under the law and the need for a more nuanced approach to addressing systemic inequalities. As the episode comes to a close, the speaker reflects on the complexities of international relations and the need for a more thoughtful approach to conflict resolution. They also touch on a disturbing story from Belfast, where a migrant attempted to behead a victim in a public street. It's a sobering reminder of the challenges we face in today's world. If you want to hear more about these topics and get a deeper understanding of the issues at play, tune in to this episode and join the conversation.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In last week's episode, I explored the tragic death of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf and the events that unfolded during a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas. This week, I'm following the case into the courtroom as we examine The State of Texas vs. Karmelo Anthony. During this episode, I'll walk through the key moments of the trial, the arguments presented by both the prosecution and defense, and the jury's ultimate decision. We'll discuss the self-defense claim raised by the defense, the testimony presented during the proceedings, and the factors that may have influenced the outcome. I'll also review the sentencing phase and the emotional victim impact statements delivered by Austin's family. As always, my goal is not to sensationalize tragedy, but to help listeners better understand the investigative and legal processes that follow a violent death. Cases like this often generate strong opinions and intense public discussion, but inside the courtroom, decisions must be based on evidence, testimony, and the law. Join me as we take a closer look at one of the most closely watched criminal trials in recent Texas history and examine the legal journey from a fatal encounter to a murder conviction.

On the afternoon of November 23, 2023, in Dublin's Parnell Square, three children were seriously injured following a stabbing attack in broad daylight. Riad Bouchaker (52) was arrested and charged in connection with the incident, and now, two-and-a-half years on, his trial is under way at the Central Criminal Court. Day one of proceedings saw the prosecution lay out its case against Mr Bouchaker, as well as hearing testimony from the mother of one of the children who was injured. She told the jury that her child is now in a wheelchair, is non-verbal and only able to answer yes or no questions by blinking. On this Extra episode of The Indo Daily, host Tessa Fleming is joined by Irish Independent special correspondent Catherine Fegan, who takes listeners inside the courtroom. Richard Pryor was one of the funniest people who ever lived. He elevated stand-up comedy to an art form. But the real life that informed his stand-up – a life of pool halls, brothels, stabbings, shootings, and lots and lots of cocaine – was a source of constant pain. A pain that he managed with a freebase habit so out of control it nearly killed him before he was even 40 years old.
