Dearly Beloved, We Are Gathered Here to Talk About Purple Rain Welcome to this episode of The Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast. Hosts Krissy Lenz (comedian and director at Neighborhood Comedy Theatre) and Nathan Blackwell (independent filmmaker at Squishy Studios) are joined this week by not one but two returning special guests—podcaster and writer Kyle Olson and podcast producer and improv impresario Pete Wright—to dig into one of the most electric, beguiling, and undeniably Prince films ever committed to celluloid: Purple Rain (1984).Neither Krissy nor Nathan had ever seen the movie before this episode—a confession that earns them some gentle ribbing from the two superfans across the table. What unfolds is a warm, funny, and genuinely insightful conversation about Prince as performer, The Kid as character, and what it means to watch a film that is less a story and more a time capsule from another world.
April 2016. __________ Über diese Songs vom Album "Purple Rain" sprechen wir im Podcast (16:56) – "Let's Go Crazy" (45:28) – "Darling Nikki"(59:12) – "When Doves Cry"(01:06:34) – "Purple Rain"__________ Alle Shownotes und weiterführenden Links zur Folge "Ramones" findet ihr hier: https://x.swr.de/s/princepurplerain __________ Ihr wollt mehr Podcasts wie diesen? It's Masters week and today Nick O'Hern and Mark Allen preview the tournament. You'd think we'd start off by chatting golf, but no, Mark brings a fun fact about trees (albeit Augusta trees) to the table, and Nick counters with another 'tree trivia' item. But after we get 'tree chat' out of the way, it's onto the real stuff. Nick and Mark discuss the Aussies and Kiwi, and what their chances are. Nick likes Min Woo the best of the Aussie and Kiwi players, Mark feels Adam Scott is in a purple patch and is the most likely of them. Each give their reasons. What about Jason Day, can he win even with a toned down outfit on? And Cam Smith? The boys are not confident. Does Ryan Fox have the game to compete at Augusta? We discuss. Then onto the power rankings, and we look at the big US and international players from 1-12-ish, deliberately skipping over one player who neither Nick or Mark enjoy watching. Nick wonders if, with the monkey off his back, Rory might go crazy this weekend, and we discuss how Scheffler might play with a new baby having just arrived. Mark is red hot for one particular player, saying he believes in 'magic' at Augusta, and this player winning would be that. Then we construct our Betr multi...and there is trouble in paradise. Nick and Mark agree on two of the legs, however have a disagreement on the third....so we 'rock paper scissors' it to see which we'll go with. After the turn, an Augusta weather update from Nick 'meteorologist' O'Hern, then we hear back from Hummer on the pricing for the multi....it's pretty good! And Mark reckons we're on a roll so it's a good one to get on board. Mark might be whacking some mayo on what defines 'on a roll', given we won our last one, and we're hardly stringing multiple wins together, but hey, let's go with it.Get on board at the Betr website here, or on the app - search Betr specials and you'll find the Talk Birdie To Me multi there. We're live from Titleist and FootJoy HQ thanks to our great partners:Hostplus, Talk Birdie To Me's official retirement partnerBMW, luxury and comfort for the 19th hole;Titleist, the #1 ball in golf;FootJoy, the #1 shoe and glove in golf;PING will help you play your best;Golf Clearance Outlet, they beat everyone's prices;Betr, the fastest and easiest betting app in Australia; And Southern Golf Club. In this episode, the boys celebrate another astounding week of performances from Nashville SC. First, they revel in finally slaying the pink dragon as Nashville eliminated Inter Miami from the only competition they truly cared about this year. And then, the boys in gold poured it on against an inferior Orlando City side. The boys can't get over the awesome performances from new goalkeeper Brian Schwake, and Cristian Espinoza appears to be even better then advertised. There's actually praise to go around for all the players on Nashville SC, including one Eddi Tagseth, who seems to be everywhere all at once. Now that Miami has been shown who is daddy, it begs the question - who exactly is the best Argentinian footballer in the MLS? Because the boys maybe think Messi has been dethroned. And when they're not talking about the Agent of Chaos, the boys take some time to break down the upcoming international break and consider some World Cup thoughts for Team USA. And they drink beer.

This week I wanted to stick with movies that came out with soundtracks that felt current when the films were released. Not older songs brought in to set a mood, and not a random collection pulled together afterward, but albums that felt tied to the moment the studio was trying to sell.Fast Times at Ridgemont High, from 1982, is a good example. The soundtrack album came out that July, and Jackson Browne's “Somebody's Baby” reached number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, so the movie clearly had a connection to what people were hearing at the time. There was also some push and pull behind the scenes. Amy Heckerling later said some of the music choices reflected producer pressure as much as her own sense of the characters, which only makes the film feel more like a real snapshot of the early 1980s.Purple Rain, from 1984, is an even stronger case, because the movie and soundtrack are almost impossible to separate. The album came out on June 25, 1984. “When Doves Cry” was released in May, and “Let's Go Crazy” followed in July, so the film reached theaters with Prince already dominating the culture around it. I also like that “When Doves Cry” came out of a specific request from director Albert Magnoli. It was not just a Prince song sitting around waiting to be used. It was part of the movie as it was taking shape.Less Than Zero, works a little differently. People do not usually talk about its soundtrack with the same reverence, but it was still very plugged into late 1987. The Bangles recorded “Hazy Shade of Winter” for the film, and it went to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, which gave the soundtrack real chart power. The rest of the album also feels very rooted in its time, with Rick Rubin producing and artists like LL Cool J and Public Enemy sharing space with a sharper, louder Simon and Garfunkel cover. It really feels like a late 1987 attempt to pull different parts of current music into one package. Then there is Singles, from 1992, which may be the best example here of a soundtrack capturing a scene while it was still happening. The album came out on June 30, 1992, a few months before the movie opened, and it included Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains, along with Paul Westerberg, who also worked on the score. Cameron Crowe later called it more of an anti soundtrack, basically a souvenir of that scene instead of a tidy album built to sum up the movie. That feels right to me. It was not trying to seem current. It actually was current. Even the gap between the album release and the film helped give it that feeling. So that is the set this week. Four movies, four different kinds of soundtrack success, and four reminders that music can tie a film to its moment just as much as clothes, locations, or dialogue can. One caught the early 1980s world of radio and mall record stores. One became a hit album right alongside the movie. One used a major single to help define its identity. One caught a local scene before it had even settled into history. Those are the kinds of rentals I always like talking about, movies that bring back not just the film, but the moment when it first showed up.Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! As the opening of my podcast informs you, I do not live in Minneapolis, but across the country in Sonoma County, CA. I've been thinking a lot about voices lately. Not the loud ones. Not the ones on cable news. The steady ones. The voice that explains something complicated and suddenly you can breathe again. The voice on stage that reminds you who you are. The voice that says, "You're not alone." For almost forty years, Teri Parker Brown has been that voice in Minneapolis. She's stood on the stages of Chanhassen, The Ordway Center for the Performing Arts, and History Theatre in Saint Paul. She's narrated for Blue Cross,American Express, 3M and many other name brands. She's guided people through healthcare modules, commercials, and stories. Her voice is described as warm. Smart. Inviting. Like a best friend. And yet… she lives in Minneapolis; a place that has known beauty — and tension. Community — and conflict. Immigration enforcement activity has increased and as a result, protests fill the streets. But today isn't about headlines. It's about what it feels like to love a place —and stay with it when things feel complicated. With deep respect, I'll be speaking with Teri about her career and what happens when the place that shaped your voice becomes unsettled and uncertain? It's also my chance to meet a fellow Door Builder in the Building Doors VO campaign. Created by fellow voiceactor, Christy Harst, Building Doors advocates for equal opportunities in the voice-over industry, for both men and women, the campaign aims to foster industry-wide equity. Once your soul is intertwined with someone, you no longer have authority or control over your mind, will, or emotions. Ever wondered why “don't stir up or awaken love until the right time” keeps showing up in Song of Solomon? Dr. Gabriel Allen Powell dives deep into the themes of passion, love, and covenant, drawing wisdom from Song of Solomon and personal experience. He explores how awakening love or passion prematurely can impact our emotional and spiritual well-being, emphasizing the importance of identity, discipline, and true covenant over mere commitment.Support the showText encounteratl to 94000 to stay up-to-date on all things Encounter.Worship with EncounterSundays at 11 AM ET | Wednesdays at 7:30 PM ETSupport EncounterText egive to 77977 Connect with EncounterFacebook | Instagram | TikTok | YouTube | WebsiteConnect with Dr. GabeInstagram | YouTube | Website

Most [if not all] of us are well familiar with the challenges of being an adult, spending a period of time at home with our parents. Whether it's moving back in with the folks long term, or just a weekend together with the fam, something about being back under mom and dad's roof can bring old, unhealthy patterns from childhood right back to the surface. In this episode, I once again interview my daughter Keana. After 18 months of being out of our home, she's now spending a season back with us and is navigating the tricky dynamics that come with relating to Cora and I and her younger siblings. We share openly about our own relationship, and Keana gives some helpful tips about how to move back in with the family, whilst also maintaining your personal values and boundaries, and basically just not going completely mental.
James sits down with astrophysicist Brian Keating for a candid, useful tour through three hot zones: how to think about AI (and where it actually helps), what's broken in higher ed and admissions right now, and why outsourcing your mood to politics is a losing strategy. You'll hear first-hand stories (from UC San Diego classrooms to New York City politics), specific ways James and Brian really use AI daily, and a simple framework for protecting your attention and happiness—even when everything feels polarized. What You'll Learn: How universities can leverage AI-guided curiosity to revolutionize learning, according to James Altucher's vision for "Altucher University." Why mastering communication skills—writing, speaking, negotiating—is crucial for career success, and why these skills are often neglected in traditional education. Firsthand insights into how Brian Keating and James Altucher use AI daily for research, problem-solving, and creativity, along with practical examples from their personal and professional lives. The economic and philosophical debates around AI's actual impact on industries, jobs, and the broader GDP, including its use in coding, media, and even farming. The limitations of AI and large language models in science and creative work, and why critical thinking and prompt engineering remain essential—even as technology evolves. In the final hour, Leila Rahimi and Marshall Harris were joined by FS1 host Danny Parkins to discuss the Bears making just one low-profile move at the NFL trade deadline. He liked the approach the Bears had. Later, Bulls Radio play-by-play announcer Chuck Swirsky joined the show live from Rome to share his experience of meeting Pope Leo XIV.
In this episode of The Music in Me, I dive deep into the incredible world of Prince — an artist who didn't just make music, but created an entire universe of sound, style, and emotion. From his early days as a young prodigy in Minneapolis to his rise as one of the most iconic performers of all time, Prince was never afraid to be different. He taught us that standing out is something to celebrate, not hide. I'll talk about how songs like “Let's Go Crazy,” “When Doves Cry,” and “Purple Rain” shaped not just the music world, but pop culture itself. I'll share what these songs mean to me personally — how their energy, passion, and message of individuality have always inspired me to be myself, no matter what. Prince wasn't just a singer or a musician; he was a movement. He broke barriers, redefined genres, and left behind a legacy that still shines as bright as ever. So, join me as I celebrate the life, the music, and the magic of a true original — the one and only Prince.ALBUMS MENTIONED...For YouDirty MindControversy1999Purple RainSign o' the TimesDiamonds and PearlsMusicologySONGS MENTIONED..."Purple Rain""When Doves Cry""Let's Go Crazy"What did you think of this episode? Christopher Tolkien explains that “the textual situation… is complex and hard to unravel.” Fortunately, the podcast situation is quite simple. Join The Man of the West and The Shieldmaiden of Rohan as we conclude our time with the Dwarves - and our time with Sara for this season - in an in-depth look at The Quest of Erebor, including bits of the story you've not likely read before. Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to witness Gimli getting a clue, Thorin's haughtiness forcing him to take a hobbit, and Balin revealing himself to be the King of Misunderstanding. Alan and Sara reminisce about pre-cloud data storage, wonder if it's foresight or are we merely crazed, and try to avoid speaking confidently without knowledge. Also, “old grey man” is a reference to Gandalf, not Alan. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We begin with something I had no clue about and we're curious if you knew. Last night was the biggest night of the year for birds migrating over Kansas and Missouri and the number will shock you! A trip to the waiting parking lot to pick up my wife yesterday at KCI left me feeling uneasy about our airport. That lottery winner that got arrested in Florida gets another plot twist as he violated his parole... and... wait for it: His girlfriend got into a fight too. This just gets stranger. Trump's scoring one win after another and announces he's building a fancy ballroom at the White House. Don't worry... he's paying for it. I think I know why. The Royals toss their 5th shutout in the last 10 games... pretty hard to lose when the other guys don't score. They also did something really nice before the game. Bill Self has an opportunity to change a few things this year with one hire and a pitcher at Kauffman Stadium last night has an amazing story to find his way to the mound.
