Welcome to the Purple Patch Podcast! On this episode, IRONMAN Master Coach Matt Dixon defines the off-season (or post-season) not as a gap between races, but as the foundational first step of the upcoming year. A successful period focuses on mental and physiological restoration while building a platform for future training. Avoid the "No-Break" Athlete: Continuous high-intensity training leads to mental exhaustion and physiological plateaus. Avoid the "Winter Warrior": Constant high-effort training causes burnout and prevents true recovery. Avoid the "Rogue/Random" Athlete: Complete cessation of training leads to detraining, injury, and difficulty ramping back up. The Goal: Achieve consistency over months and seasons rather than daily perfection, creating "compound interest" on fitness. Training Principles The off-season shifts focus from boosting functional thresholds or speed to preparatory work that builds a robust chassis for the next season. Reduced Volume: Athletes are encouraged to train fewer hours (e.g., dropping from 20 hours to 12–14) to reduce cognitive load and life competition. Strength Focus: This is the primary window to "double down" on strength training to increase durability and power. Technical Development: Without the pressure of race deadlines, athletes should focus on craft, such as swim hand entry, running posture, and cycling traction. Variety and Additive Activities: Incorporating activities like skiing, yoga, or mountain biking helps maintain vibrancy and prevents boredom. Physiological Ceiling: Utilizing short, high-intensity bouts to build the heart rate ceiling without the volume of a full race prep block. Program Details Purple Patch will officially launch its off-season program on September 28th, though onboarding can begin around September 14th or 21st. Structure: The program emphasizes building an athletic base (multi-directional stability and power) rather than just a traditional Zone 2 base. Next Steps: A follow-up episode will feature a Q&A session to address specific training challenges and structural questions. Inquiries: Interested participants can contact info@purplepatchfitness.com regarding the Tri Squad off-season program or request a complimentary assessment call with Max. How can athletes best integrate these principles if they are still actively racing through October? For decades, employees and visitors at Salt Lake City's Rio Grande Depot told stories about the Purple Lady—a young woman supposedly killed by a train after a disastrous reunion with her returning fiancé. People claimed to see her reflection in the women's restroom, hear her singing after hours, and feel her presence moving through the building's basement corridors. But when Utah historians finally dug into the story, they found something unexpected: there was no dead woman, no train accident, no newspaper coverage, and no Purple Lady before the state moved into the building in the 1980s. Tonight, we explore one of Utah's most famous hauntings, the century-old building noises that may explain some of its ghostly reputation, and the remarkable possibility that an entirely invented ghost story became real enough for people to start experiencing it. Orange. Month. Woman. Purple. We start with No Rhyme Nor Reason Day and tumble into a surprisingly useful question: why do some things resist neat rules, whether it's language, poetry, or the way change happens in schools? (See what we did there?) It's light, a little nerdy, and a reminder that sometimes doing something just for the joy of it is reason enough. Then we shift to the work that really matters for educators: instructional coaching that actually moves classroom practice and student learning. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds and Chris Fetters - spoke after a two-hour Wednesday workout inside Husky Stadium that saw the Washington Huskies go through a number of team periods at thud tempo, as well as a few periods where the first team offense and defense were getting scout team looks, much like they would during a normal game week.Kim feels like starting quarterback Demond Williams is head and shoulders better than a year ago, while Chris is looking forward to seeing how Demond processes things and executes once he's playing a defense that doesn't wear Purple and Gold.On defense, there were a couple of linebackers limited or out, so we got to see a big dose of both MIKs, Taariq Al-Uqdah and Jacob Manu. Is that a combination we could see more of during the season, depending on down and distance and game situation? And one EDGE Chris was asked about this week stepped up with a big Wednesday practice... could it mean the beginning of Logan George and his ascent up the EDGE depth chart? And before they give their final thoughts - which includes some talk on the celebrations for the 2016 team planned during Apple Cup week, as well as the seven captains named ahead of the 2026 season (Williams, John Mills, Landen Hatchett, Drew Azzopardi, Elinneus Davis, Manu, and Alex McLaughlin) - Kim and Chris have differing opinions on which right guard will end up with the most snaps in 2026; Geirean Hatchett or Champ Taulealea?

Why are so many of the flies we tie, use, and sell, all brightly colored, when most of the real-life bugs trout eat are drab and dull? Why do our fly boxes look like they'd be more at home at a middle-school craft fair, or a tea party, than on the river? Well, it all boils down to how trout perceive color. Understanding this key detail of trout biology can help you better understand how and why trout react so well to certain fly patterns. Ahhh, mes enfants. Gather around, light up your many, many cigarettes and attendez-vous to this, the latest pointless entry in our series “Cuz It's Good For You,” our latest meaningless distraction from the misery of existence and our inexorable descent into the grave. You, get me another keg of Pernod. Ah, bon, bon. Oui, this time Michel and I, we choose yet another laughable excuse for art from Le Collection de Criterion, Réne Clément's, or as you foolish Americans say, Rene Clement's, slightly-less-insignificant-than-some work “Purple Noon.” This film, she is adapted from le novel by Patricia Highsmith, involving the banal, time-wasting character that is M'sieu Tom Ripley. For those who find such fripperies of interest, this film was remade as “The Talented Mr. Ripley” involving the trivial performer Matt Damon, in yet another purposeless flicker in the darkness that is the world. “Purple Noon” stars some actors whose beauty is as brief and passing as the life of the fruit fly, and whose skilled performances leave us empty and weak. Come, give a listen to our trifling meanderings. Let us offer a diversion from your normal contemplation of the feckless and cruel state that is life. Someone bring me another three hundred Galois. Maintenant! Poll question: who is your favorite non-U.S. actor? Leave a comment or dial our International Hotline at 617-398-7266 and leave, how you say, the mail of the voice.

SUMMARY: Most of us parent from what we already know and love. We steer our kids toward the sports we played and the interests we developed, and then we wait for them to get excited about our world. In Part 6 of the Multipliers series, Jeff reads Chapter 23 of the DadAwesome book and shares an archive clip with Alex Burton about a prayer, a purple carabiner, and a campfire question that changed everything. TAKEAWAYS Delight in what they delight in. Stop waiting for your kids to get excited about your world and step into theirs instead. Our Heavenly Father does not just tolerate what we care about. He delights in it. He came down instead of making us climb up. Ask the men who know you best: what do you see in my life that I am not seeing, and what am I missing? Then do not get defensive. Write down what they say. Connection is worth the sacrifice. The cost is not always money. Sometimes it is time, and sometimes it is setting aside your preferences for theirs. Pause and pray before you show up. Alex asked God what to bring before he ever left his house, and a child he had never met walked away knowing she was known. Guest Alex Burton is an outdoors enthusiast, a climber, and a father of three. He and his wife, Mel, have been married more than 26 years. Alex serves on the staff team at Wild at Heart. His full conversation with Jeff is Episode 297. QUOTES "I experienced something I can only describe as kind fathering from a complete stranger." (04:30) "This wasn't just a piece of climbing equipment anymore. It was proof that someone saw her. Someone cared about what brought her joy. God knew her favorite color, and He used Alex to show her." (04:50) "Alex, right now, if I could choose who'd be around this campfire with, I would choose my son. Can you say the same?" (06:30) "You don't need to become an expert in what your kids love. You just need to show up and jump in. When you step into their world, you're reflecting how God treats us. He came down instead of making us climb up." (10:20) "It wasn't even so much, it could have been anything, but it was purple." (13:20) Alex Burton ACTION STEPS I. Reflection Name what each child delights in. Write down each kid's name, and next to it, what they are into right now. Legos, surfing, bike rides, theater, dance, soccer. If you are not sure, that is your invitation to get curious. Find where you are resisting. Is there a passion of theirs that annoys you, crowds your calendar, or that you secretly hope they outgrow? Name it, then go a step deeper and ask why your heart is positioned that way. Ask if your kids know they are delighted in. Do they know that your favorite role in life, outside of being married to their mom, is being their dad? Try asking them directly: do you have any idea how much I love you? Then watch their eyes. II. Multiplication Ask the campfire question. Take it to two or three friends: what do you see in my life that I am not seeing, and what am I missing? Do not defend yourself. Just write it down. Be an Alex for another dad. Alex took a half day off work for a family he had never met. Could you take time off, help with a project, or create a moment for another dad and his kids? Send a joy bomb. An unexpected gift at an unexpected time, to your wife, your kids, or a dad who is grinding. No occasion required. III. Activation Pray before you show up. Before the recital, the game, or youth group pickup, pause in the car and ask God if there is something He wants you to bring or say. The pause is huge. Jump into their world this week. Research what they love. Show up with a surprising level of joyful curiosity and joyful participation. Put something in their hand. Something small from the store or ordered online, given for no reason, with the words: I see you, I love you, I delight in you. Pray Zephaniah 3:17 over each child by name, out loud, this week. Insert their name into the verse and let it reshape how you pray for them. In the Wisconsin primary last week the socialist candidate Francesca Hong was narrowly defeated by her more centrist opponent. It's a result that some argue shows the limits of left politics in swing states and outside of Democrat voting heartlands - in spite of the prior victory of Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan. To talk through both campaigns, and what they tell us about the viability of left politics in the United States, PTO is joined by Maurice Weeks - co-founder of the Action Center on Race and the Economy.
The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds and Chris Fetters - had things to say about day 11 of Washington's fall camp practice, one that looked like it was going to be a carbon copy of Tuesday's workout on the east field, but then the team ran into Husky Stadium and that's when things got interesting. The music got cranked, they inserted a ton of crowd noise as well, and it became a Tylenol Special. If it was done to induce headaches for all the players, it worked. The competitive periods were geared a little bit toward the offense in terms of where they started their drives on the field and also due to the fact that they were playing at 'thud' tempo, meaning just short of full speed without contact taking ballcarriers to the ground. Before talking about the offensive players that stood out, Kim and Chris gave their thoughts on Washington's newest roster inclusion, former placekicker Grady Gross. The same Colorado-based court decision that allowed DL Ta'ita'i Uiagalelei to return to Montlake also gave Gross an opportunity to come back and kick for the Purple and Gold. But what does that mean for Tyler Robles? What does it mean in terms of who will kick the ball off now for the Huskies? After that, it was all about the final competitive team periods, which went roughly 80 plays. Who stood out, especially at receiver? Who participated that hadn't up to that point? Who stayed out of the periods? The guys talk about all of those things, and more. They also preview the upcoming practices and which ones the fans should see ahead of Saturday night's Mock Game inside Husky Stadium.

Can you play the secret "Tommy Alderson chord"? (This juicy power chord is MONEY!) Are you hip to the awesomeness that is a wet/dry rig? Want insight into one of the most badass classic rock bands still touring (Deep Purple) and their two great guitarists of recent decades (Simon McBride and Steve Morse)? Well, hit play! Tommy Alderson and I have been friends since my first tour (I play with Jefferson Starship) supporting Purple all over Europe, and now, as the bands unite for their third tour (Canada and the U.S.), it is the perfect time to release two interviews/guitar hangs I have done with Tommy, Purple's great guitar tech who also happens to be a great player — as you'll hear, from his work on D Corridori's album Feed the Right Wolf and other projects. The first interview you'll hear took place just before we left for this tour; the second takes us back in time to a great guitar hang/jam/interview that took place backstage at a huge arena we played in Oberhausen, Germany, in November 2022. Enjoy, and be sure to check out GuitarPlayer.com, who made this episode possible. —JUDE GOLD, host/creator, No Guitar Is Safe

What an inspiring conversation with an entrepreneurial icon in our industry, Dr. Stephen Gunther! From an assistant professor at UCSF to founder of Shoulder Innovations, a company that rang the bell on the NYSE in 2025, a 20-year build of a most inspiring story!!Dr. Gunther saw a gap in shoulder arthroplasty that nobody else was solving (implant loosening, one of the leading causes of failure in the space) and instead of writing a paper about it, he patented the fix.The inset glenoid. 15 patents. A company that went from one Surgeon's idea to $47M+ in revenue and a public offering.Device Nation finds no holes in ANY tray as we "Open the Room" with Independent Distributor Mike Nelligan! We talk LinkedIn, "where have the sales reps gone", 4-pillars consulting, even the therapeutic benefits gained from setting things on fire! What stuck with me about both of these conversations was the Dartmouth-old-school mindset running through the whole thread — foundational things that work, not chasing change for the sake of change, just execute what we all know works.....and do it every single day. That's a lesson for Surgeons, Reps and budding entrepreneurs alike!Dartmouth 3D Scholars: https://www.3d-scholars.org/Shoulder Innovations: https://shoulderinnovations.com/ Dr. Stephen Gunther: https://www.sentara.com/find-a-doctor-or-provider/Gunther-Stephen-73361 Mike Nelligan: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mikenelligan/ 4 Pillars Consulting: https://www.fourpillarsconsultinggroup.com/ Energy Bus: https://a.co/d/09VzMyTe Can't Autom(AI)te Trust: https://a.co/d/0dRgFKEG Surgeon/Rep Townhall Meeting: https://devicenation.comJohn Cleese Sales Videos: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2tiAkWsqz-IkeZHmA_UQ72YEgAG93v8zThank you for your Support! https://account.venmo.com/u/DeviceNation
This week, news that didn't make the news, from Palestine. First up, I sit down with Palestinian writer and researcher Nadine Sayegh to discuss her latest piece State, Soldiers, and Systematic Sadism: The Israeli Military's Normalization of Sexual Violence. Nadine explains the Israeli hasbara tactic of purple-washing, the global Norths violent feminism, and the confluence of sex and genocidal violence. We discuss the medias failure to place accountability on systems, suggesting that the problem, much like with the US own torture programs, is just a few bad eggs. Next up, associate editor at the Electronic Intifada Nora Barrows Friedman comes back on the show to discuss the latest news from Palestine: what's the story with Hamas stepping down, as concentration camps are constructed inside the concentration camp of Gaza, and as the so-called ceasefire continues to be violently broken by Israel daily? Nora also discusses the most recent violent escalations of settler violence in the occupied West Bank, and the medias continued failure to cover it, and if they do, to cover it only from the side of Israeli propaganda. Nadine N. Sayegh is a Palestinian multidisciplinary writer and researcher focusing on the Arab-speaking world. Her work spans gender, geopolitics, human security, and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. She holds an MA in Media and the Middle East from SOAS, London, and a Doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Toulouse (Jean-Jaurs), where her dissertation examined multiscalar gendered oppression in Palestine and Jordan. Her research and commentary have been featured in scholarly and journalistic venues, with select works translated internationally. Nora Barrows Friedman is an associate editor at Electronic Intifada and the co-host of their weekly livestream. The News That Didn't Make the News. Each week, co-hosts Mickey Huff and Eleanor Goldfield conduct in depth interviews with their guests and offer hard hitting commentary on the key political, social, and economic issues of the day with an emphasis on critical media literacy.
