Hey, Mama. Welcome to the Small Biz Mama Podcast Episode 0. Today we'll talk a little bit about why we're here and why I hope you will listen. If you don't know me, my name is Kristin Ingram. I'll tell you a little bit more about myself after I talk about what I hope to accomplish here because ultimately, that is more important than who I am. My goal for this show is: in 15 minutes or less a week, I want to help you become a better businesswoman, to enjoy your life more, and to be the parent that you've always wanted to be.  That is what I am striving to do in my life. I am still learning. I'm still growing, and I know that I still have a long way to go. So for me, this podcast is about what I'm learning, what I've studied, what I've seen from other folks, what I’ve taught my clients, and things that I've learned along the way.    Who the hell am I?   As I said, my name is Kristin Ingram. Some of you know me from a podcast that I had called Small Biz Life with my husband, Jeff. Jeff and I are still together. We're still doing amazing. And, if you listened to that show, towards the end of the show, you know that we have a son named Erik.  Erik is now two and I just turned 40. Erik and I share a birthday, which is pretty cool, a day that Jeff will never forget.  Jeff and I have been married for 19 years in May, but we've been together for over 20 years and we both work from home for one of our businesses. I actually own two - I'm a certified public accountant, and I own a tax and consulting firm. We also own a company called Ingram Digital Media, which handles all of our educational products. We have a course called Bookkeeper Training School where we teach moms how to create a full-time income while their kids are napping. That is a system that I had been playing with and had taught Jeff so that he could help me during tax season. Then we realized that there were a lot of moms out there that could benefit from learning this type of bookkeeping system. So that's what we teach. You could learn more about that at BookkeeperTrainingSchool.com.  If you're interested, go check it out. I also teach at a university. I've taught for over 10 years. I teach taxes at the graduate and undergraduate levels. And I love being a mom.  I love our life and I love how fortunate we are to be able to spend so much time together. We actually enjoy spending that time together. And so for me, I am always looking for systems, where I can spend less time working and more time with Jeff and Erik, because ultimately, the most important thing for me is to spend time with them.  I'm also a cancer survivor, and that was one of the things that really woke me up as to what is important in life and what's not. It's hard sometimes when I see people get so bogged down in things that are just not important - you want to shake them and say, “Listen, it's really not that important. Don't waste your energy on that.” But it's really hard, I think, for people to understand that when they haven't gone through something life-threatening. That's why this show is really important... to put things in perspective, to help you create better businesses, enjoy your life more, and be the kind of parent that you've always wanted to be. What you’ll get out of the show Also - if you're not a parent, you're still going to get a lot out of the show. If you don't own your own business yet, but you're thinking about it, you're going to get a ton out of this show. You're going to get to see the behind the scenes of what it's like. I hope that you will hit subscribe wherever you're listening. If you're listening through a podcast, or if you're watching us on YouTube, make sure that you subscribe to our show to get the new episodes as they come out. I want to hear from you, so I'd love to have you connect with us. There's a bunch of different ways you can connect with the show. You can go to SmallBizMama.com. We're going to have show notes for all the episodes. We're going to be talking about a lot of tips and tools, and I'm going to be talking about a lot of different experts that I follow that I work with. All of that information will be in the show notes. You can connect with us there. You can contact the show. You can ask questions because ultimately, this show is for you.  I want to make sure that I'm talking about the things that you need help with the most. You can also find us on Facebook. You can look me up. My name is Kristin Ingram. You'll see my picture when you join. You can follow the Small Biz Mama Podcast on Facebook. I'm the Small Biz Mama on Instagram, and on Pinterest as well. I want to connect with you.  I have a Facebook group that you can find through the Small Biz Mama Podcast on Facebook. I want to be a resource for you. We've been really fortunate in our lives to be able to have this life where Jeff and I are home raising Erik while working our businesses. I know a lot of people look at that and think, “How do they do that? How is that possible?” That's really what this show is all about - to give you a peek behind the curtain so that you can see what your life could look like, to give you tips and say, you're almost there, but you feel like you're working too much or you're not able to spend the time with your kids that you want to have. You're not getting enough sleep, but you're working all the time. Whatever your thing is, we want to help you get to the place where you really feel like you know you're there, you're at the pinnacle, you've made it. And so that's what we're going to do here.  I hope that you hit subscribe when you're done listening to this episode so you'll get all of our future episodes. I'm going to keep them short. 15 minutes a week is going to be some really valuable time for you. So, all right, Mamas,  I will see you soon. Thanks so much. Small businesses are formed for many reasons. We started ours because we loved our hobby of teaching, inspiring, and entertaining people. There are many reasons to start a small biz. You might want to work for yourself or make some more money. However, we live in a changing world. We cannot afford to lose track of the trends in small business or we risk losing the business we love. So we need to understand, where small business if going. What is the biggest change coming to small biz? There are many changes that will continue to happen with Small Business. Record numbers will be starting up and failing every year. However, the biggest change is that the older definitions will start disappearing. Local business versus international business and online business versus offline business will merge into business. It really has been changing with the invention of the online business and people growing more connected to the internet via their mobile devices. The great thing is the growth of this technology provides great opportunities to those willing to keep changing. These opportunities will create a huge challenge for small biz We will no longer be able to hide from competition. They will invade our communities and try and lure away our customers. So, we need to adapt and move our business into this space before someone else occupies it. Whether you are planning your first day working full-time for your business or you had your first day ten years ago, this episode is for you. We discuss Jeff's plans for his first day working for Ingram Digital Media, Inc. and the three pillars of success for our business.   Your first day If your first day in your business was tomorrow, what would that day look like? If you've been running your business for years, how would your first day and first week be different if you restarted today?  Jeff has spent a lot of time working on his time budget and master schedule (get our Mastering your Time course free and try Small Biz HQ for 30 days for just $5 with coupon code MARCHFOR5) to ensure that he can hit the ground running. We've also spent a lot of time planning what we want the next few months to look like.  You may not know this, but we actually have three active brands in our business: Small Biz Life, Accounting In Focus, and Gardul/Worldbuilder's Anvil. We've got a lot of ideas floating out there for each of these brands. We could sit down, plan for weeks, and still not get all of our ideas on paper. At some point, the long-range planning needs to be set aside and action needs to take over.  All of this planning can cause overload. I'm sure you have felt this before and are maybe are in this place right now. Unless you have a focus on your priorities, the overwhelming feelings you have will stop your momentum. Jeff plans to focus on three pillars for success. Our 3 pillars of success We have said multiple times on the show that revenue generation and product development should be priorities in your business. Those are two of your pillars. The third is customer experience.  Jeff is most excited about increasing his role in customer experience for our brands. He loves interacting with people and helping them achieve their goals. This is one thing he has not had much time to do because of his limited schedule. Customer experience creates raving fans and happy paying customers. How much time are you devoting to customer experience? The second pillar Jeff will focus on is increased revenue generation from our existing offerings. Customer experience is an important part of this but we also know we must improve our sales funnels and marketing practices. Taking potential customers through a defined sales funnel will help increase our revenue. Do you have a defined sales funnel? What does your sales process look like?  Our third pillar is product development. This includes a few new products and adding content to our existing products. It is our goal to add one new major product per brand per year. We could develop lots of new products but that would take time away from the other two pillars. If you are only developing new products, don't be surprised when those products don't sell as well as you hoped. Unless you spend time marketing, all the products in the world are not going to make you the kind of income you want. Are you spending too much time on product development? Are your products and services well defined? It's not all lollipops and unicorns Since we announced that Jeff was leaving his job, we have had many trials and tribulations. Every week, something popped up that made us question our decision. Every time, we recommitted to Jeff coming to work with the business full-time. We knew we were making the right decision even though there were many personal challenges. We could really use some lollipops and unicorns in March, though.  Other mentions Ronei Harden - Jeff's book editor Episode 75, where we discuss Recurpost Episode 74, where we discuss priorities Episode 69, where we discuss how we were able to have Jeff come work for the business full-time Listen to the show on iTunes, Stitcher, YouTube, Google Play Music, iHeart Radio, or with the player below  Links ((((((((((((((((((((((((((( Visit Show notes ))))))))))))))))))))))))) https://www.smallbizlife.com/blog/episode-76-your-first-day     ((((((((((((((((((((((((((( Mentions links ))))))))))))))))))))))))) https://www.facebook.com/RoneiHarden https://www.smallbizlife.com/blog/episode-75-social-media-scheduling-update https://www.smallbizlife.com/blog/episode-74-prioritizing-all-the-things https://www.smallbizlife.com/blog/episode-69-making-the-leap https://www.smallbizlife.com/store/5CQukiiy Small Biz HQ Car Crash Flash Sale code MARCHFOR5 expires on March 31, 2017. https://www.smallbizlife.com/store/X5iVpMtD time budget and master schedule http://gardul.com/ http://accountinginfocus.com/   ((((((((((((((((((((((((((( Rate and Review us in iTunes ))))))))))))))))))))))))) https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/small-biz-life/id1039595496   ((((((((((((((((((((((((((( Like our Facebook Page ))))))))))))))))))))))))) https://www.facebook.com/smallbizlifepodcast/   ((((((((((((((((((((((((((( Join our Facebook Group ))))))))))))))))))))))))) https://www.facebook.com/groups/SmallBizLife/   ((((((((((((((((((((((( Support us by using our Amazon Affiliate Link ))))))))))))))))))))) http://smallbizlife.com/Amazon   ((((((((((((((((((((((((((( Twitter  ))))))))))))))))))))))))) https://twitter.com/JefferyWIngram https://twitter.com/KristinLIngram https://twitter.com/SBLPodcast

Today's Topic Downtime for Worldbuilders Recently, I was recording an episode for why Downtime is important on my other podcast The Small Biz Life. It is something I am passionate about because I want to be present in my life, I work ten hour days at my day job, Kristin and I are creating a media company, I volunteer time every week, plus I am writing a novel for NaNoWriMo. I love everything I do.  However, I do not have extra hours in the week so I strategically use downtime. Downtime like a fine wine helps cleanse the palate of mind. I use it to get a better understanding of the world, which allows me to create more detail into my worlds. Downtime helps me learn from literature effective ways to deliver stories. Downtime like a fine wine helps cleanse the palate of mind. When your work day gets longer. You will run into a couple of major issues. First, you will lose productivity when you switch between completely different types of tasks.  For Example, If I am meeting with someone about requirements for an upcoming project and then after the meeting I try and write a chapter for my fantasy novel, I will struggle.  I will have trouble letting go of the details of the meeting, which will make it harder to get into the minds of the characters.  I will also struggle with the types of words needed to keep the feel of my novel.  The actual act of writing will be slower. Now, I will try and deal with this when scheduling my time.  However, So times life will force you to schedule radically different task next to each other.  When they do, I will take a break.  I will jam out to some incredible music that makes me want to move.  In the span of a five-minute break, I can free my mind of the last task and be more open to the next.  I will get more writing do in a shorter period of time. Today's Topic – Make your geek official. 3 easy steps to start a small business and a path to marketing yourself Hey, let’s start off serious.  How many authors have you read that you had never heard of before you bought their book?  I have a few. Many coffee table books.  And I have bought a few and had a few given to me gifts. I am much pickier with Games.  If I do not know it, I will not buy it.  I am stuck in my ways.  Now, I have several friends who have large game collections.  I will try out most games with them before I buy any. Know, Since I have started the Worldbuilder’s Anvil. I have had the chance to talk to many people who have great talents in writing, game design and other parts of geekery. There is an amazing amount of talent. Great storytellers and talented individuals all around.  Many of them spend most of their waking hours working and then again on their passion of choice.  Most end up doing very little with it.  They share their passion with a few lucky people they know.  Another lot of them release content through traditional means or through their own personal financial risk.  They launch their work and then move on to the next project. Grimm Truth about creative products Some get it, the hustle and work.  However, they most have no background in business or marketing.  They are creators. They love the craft.  They hope or maybe even expect that the quality of their work will one day be noticed.  However, the truth is that many of us will have trouble selling our products. According to Bowker Reports over 2 million new ISBN numbers were released in 2012.  And the trend from 2002 to the projected 2013 numbers are grimmer the number of new releases has grown 470%. What happens if you make money? And then, what happens if your product sells.  So you actually make money.  You have to pay for graphics, editing, layout work and marketing.  After that, the government will want you to give them a portion.  You could work for years and never keep a dime. Even if you are not an author, How much money do you spend on accessories, materials, and conventions? It is lucky we love what we do because most forms of creative arts are very expensive. However, with the price of less than an hour of your time.  We can get you started on a path that will help you make the most of what you do.  Kristin and I will show you three simple steps on how to set you geekery into a business. It is simpler than you think. It should take you less than a day and probably less than $50. We will also share with you the basics we have learned to create a foundation for online marketing. Do not lose hope, Start Smart I am not trying to affiliate market you any products or services here. I am really trying to get more geeks to share more of their content with the world.  I believe many of you have fans out there who would love to buy what you should be selling.  Heck, I might even be one of them.  And it truly hurts me that most people will not take a few simple steps to protect themselves and try and get their art into other people’s hands. I will be joined by Kristin Ingram today. She is my co-host on another podcast called Small Biz Life.  She is a CPA and the director of The Masters of Accounting and Taxation and the University of Hartford.  She has spent a year working with small business on how to become more profitability.  If you want to learn more about our business side, check out our business bios here. My problem for me is time; I work a full-time job, I have this podcast, and I am also on the Small Biz Life podcast. However, I have never felt stopped by my narrative. So being and explorer, I searched for a reason that I would not get stuck in a narrative over writers with more experience have trouble getting stuck telling a story. All I could figure out was it had nothing to do with a difference storytelling skills.  However, most of my experience telling stories was much more interactive. I have a background in acting, oral storytelling, and tabletop roleplaying.  I truly believe that improve acting skills and tabletop storytelling really developed my skills working with a story that I didn’t have complete control over.  I was forced to learn ways to keep moving the story ahead to the conclusion that I wanted.
