On the show Long Strange Trip, Sequoia Capital partner Brian Halligan speaks with a16z's Ben Horowitz about what separates great founder CEOs from everyone else. Ben explains why first-time founders lose confidence, defer too much to senior hires, and let decision debt paralyze their companies. They discuss where founder mode works and where people are taking it too far, why the VP of Sales is the hire founders mess up more than any other, and why Andy Grove's "constructive confrontation" matters more than most CEOs realize. Ben also shares what he's learned working with Zuckerberg, what Jensen Huang and Elon Musk actually have in common, and why culture is defined by behavior, not values.   Resources: Follow Brian Halligan on X: https://twitter.com/bhalligan Follow Ben Horowitz on X: https://twitter.com/bhorowitz Listen to more from Long Strange Trip: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLOhHNjZItNnNu8wknSuVtcSJRs7Q4xqOE   Stay Updated:Find a16z on YouTube: YouTubeFind a16z on XFind a16z on LinkedInListen to the a16z Show on SpotifyListen to the a16z Show on Apple PodcastsFollow our host: https://twitter.com/eriktorenberg Please note that the content here is for informational purposes only; should NOT be taken as legal, business, tax, or investment advice or be used to evaluate any investment or security; and is not directed at any investors or potential investors in any a16z fund. a16z and its affiliates may maintain investments in the companies discussed. On the latest episode of On The Record, Brian Wise and Michael Mackenzie ease into their weekly cultural ramble with the sombre news of Bob Weir's death—remembering an artist whose band (The Grateful Dead) they half‑followed but wholly respected. Weir, who died on January 10 at 78 (the same date as David Bowie's passing—coincidence or cosmic scheduling?), becomes the launchpad for a surprisingly affectionate exploration of Deadhead culture. Michael recalls the excellent Long Strange Trip documentary—long enough, Brian notes, to break a Melbourne Film Festival projector—and the pair marvel at the Grateful Dead's unique talent for turning concerts into economic ecosystems.  From there, the conversation pivots to David Bowie's The Final Act documentary (streaming on ABC), Crowded House opening the Australian Open (a first for tennis, apparently), and the AFL's ongoing failure to book local acts for the Grand Final. Why Snoop Dogg over Emma Donovan? Why not Troy Cassar-Daley? The hosts are baffled. Then there's Bluesfest's controversial booking of heavy metal act Parkway Drive, which has purists clutching their harmonicas. Festival director Peter Noble defends the choice, arguing you can't limit festivals by genre.  The episode meanders through Lucinda Williams' new album, Russell Crowe's Oscar-worthy turn in Nuremberg, and the existential challenges of songwriting. The 2010 Pittsburgh Steelers season was arguably the strangest in team history. The team battled numerous controversies both on and off the field. Their star quarterback and linebacker were disciplined by the NFL, their star receiver, running back, and kicker were all unceremoniously jettisoned, and their offensive line was riddled with injuries. They overcame all of it to somehow make their way back to the Super Bowl, and their journey to get there was full of wild moments and unlikely heroes. Last year, Jack Hanley—one of New York's most beloved and idiosyncratic gallerists— announced he would close his gallery after 37 years in business. The news landed with both surprise and sadness: Hanley has always been a disruptor, a dealer with a sharp eye for fresh talent, who followed instinct over market logic. A gem of the New York art scene and beyond. Over the decades, Hanley gave early shows to artists like Günther Förg, Christopher Wool, Sophie Calle, and Christian Marclay—and all of that was long before they became art-world names they are now. He helped define the San Francisco scene of the 1990s, championed artists who blurred lines between high and low and made challenging work; and more recently, even gave the digital artist Beeple his first-ever gallery show. As a former Grateful Dead roadie, avid orchid grower, art fair founder, and having run galleries in several cities, he's seen a lot. And played music with more than a few art dealers. Hanley joins senior editor Kate Brown to discuss transformation and continuity in the art world and art industry. We talk about what's changed, what hasn't, and what keeps art interesting, even as the market has grown more absurd.

Slaycation: True Crimes, Murders, and Twisted Vacations

Hey Slaycaters (and music fans) we're taking you back to 1973 and the Summer Jam concert in Watkins Glen, New York.  The headliners were The Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers and The Band and over 600,000 people showed up to the Watkins Glen Grand Prix Raceway.   Among the concert-goers were 16 year old Michael Weiser and 15 year old Bonnie Bickwit, two very smart and loving kids from Brooklyn, NY.  Without a car, the pair decided to hitchhike to the show.  They never made it home.  Join us as we take a deep dive into this music-festival mystery that may have left these two unlucky Deadheads dead. Zach Leary is a teacher, speaker, writer, and spiritual explorer with one of the most iconic legacies in psychedelic history—being the son of Timothy Leary. But our conversation goes far beyond lineage.Zach and I dive into his personal story of addiction, homelessness, and recovery, as well as the spiritual awakening that helped him reframe his life through the teachings of Ram Dass and his own lived experience with psychedelics. We examine the deeper meaning of surrender, how psychedelics intersect with the 12-Step path, and the modern resurgence of mind-altering medicine as both a healing tool and cultural movement. From DMT journeys to divine amends, this episode is a vulnerable exploration of what it means to truly change.DISCLAIMER: This podcast is for educational purposes only and not intended for diagnosing or treating illnesses. We all know family road trips can be fun, bonding experiences that generate fond memories, but they can also be filled with tension and frayed nerves—although perhaps not to the degree experienced by the Tromp family of Silvan, Australia.  In August 2016, Mark and Jacoba Tromp and their adult children Riana, Mitchell, and Ella embarked on a perplexing journey of around 1000 miles that captivated the country.  They abruptly left their home, abandoning their phones and credit cards.  What followed was a five-day saga of mystery and confusion.  The family's erratic behavior, including apparent paranoia and separation, led to a nationwide search.  The incident, dubbed the “Tech-Free Family Road Trip,” sparked widespread speculation about mental health, shared psychosis, and the pressures of modern life on their successful farm.  During this family travel season, we work to dissect what happened and why.  Was this bizarre odyssey a contagious emotional meltdown, or was there an actual threat to their safety as the parents initially thought?   Visit our website for a lot more information on this episode.
