Gary Johansson, former mayor of Port Adelaide Enfield, shares his insights on leadership, community building, economic development, and entrepreneurship with Peter Solerno on Happy Business Radio. Johansson emphasizes the importance of delegation and succession planning in business and in life, highlighting the need to train and encourage people and give them guidance and advice to take over from you in the future. He notes that selling is a universal language that forms a strong basis for starting and growing a business. Johansson believes business should be exciting, engaging, and client-focused, and staff are part of the family in small family businesses. Johansson and Solerno discuss the importance of community and multiculturalism, with Johansson sharing his experiences of the Italian community settling in the area where he grew up. They also touch on the fact that people spend more time at work than with their families and how work colleagues become like extended family members. Johansson notes the strength and capability of women in business, particularly those from European and Asian backgrounds who have been taught by their parents from a very early age how to run a business and be responsible. Johansson believes that business people have a responsibility to give back to the community and support charities. He notes that many big national and international companies refuse to donate, while small businesses like his own are happy to chip in and help. Johansson shares his personal experiences of starting a painting business from his backyard shed at home without asking for permission from the council, and how he was able to grow the business to deal with the likes of Mitsubishi and General Motors. He emphasizes the importance of taking risks and believing in yourself and your product. He also stresses the value of gaining knowledge and expertise in your industry before starting a business. Johansson's experiences have taught him that working together as a united family is important, whether in business or in your own family. He notes that people don't necessarily have to speak the same language to do business and that business is beyond language, caste, or religion. Johansson also discusses the importance of preparing your business for sale and having a succession plan in place. He shares his own experience of listing his business for sale and the benefits of going through the process. Johansson stresses the importance of having staff in your business, as it allows for delegation and the ability to take time off. He also emphasizes the importance of treating staff well and giving people a chance, as they will often return the favour. Overall, Happy Business Radio offers practical advice and inspiring stories to entrepreneurs and business owners who want to learn from successful leaders and entrepreneurs and connect with a global community of like-minded people.

RadioRotary interviews Carmel Rotarian Marjorie Keith and recent Mahopac High School student Robert Solerno about the role of the 4-H Club of Putnam Country. Keith is the Executive Director of Putnam County’s branch of the Cornell Cooperative Extension, which sponsors 4-H clubs, while Solerno is not only an enthusiastic member of 4-H, but also a former member of the Mahopac High School Interact Club. Although we think of 4-H (which stands for Head, Heart, Hands, and Health) primarily as rural, the club thrives in Putnam County, which is not rural, with programs or divisions devoted to pet care, media, crafts, the environment, and leadership. A major event is the annual Putnam Country 40H Fair in Kent, NY, that features many local booths devoted to 4-H-related activities and activities that interest children as well as a famous chicken dinner on Saturday night of the Fair. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/radiorotary/support
Here we are, well into 2016 and not nearly finished writing 2015 on checks and administrative forms. This lovely podcast occurred in the warm (quite warm), waning days of 2015…on an evening in which Greg decided to make cranberry juice and his unpredictable neurochemistry decided to toggle in the mildly bipolar manner that it often swings. This can be frustrating for Jen. However, when the toggle moves from draggy and depressed to frenetic and happy it’s ultimately amusing for Greg and anyone not living with him. Like you, dear listener. So have fun! Whilst Greg boils a pound of cranberries in a liter of water, in preparation for a New Year’s margarita variation involving cranberry-citrus juice/syrup, Wigle white rye, Solerno blood orange liquer, club soda, and bitters, your dynamic duo of drinking Del Ducas pair Brewery Ommegang Three Philosophers quadruple style ale with two cupcakes from Vanilla Pastry Studio in Regent Square. And wowee, wow-wow is that pairing wonderful! This fun continues for approximately 22 minutes, at which point your narrator, Greg, will return to guide you immediately back in for an 8-minutes-mini that includes the previously mentioned citrus-cranberry juice (…it turned out wonderfully, and quite concentrated…) and a late, late cocktail. The music included in this episode, in order, includes: “I can read your mind” by the wonderful and talented R.J. Heid. “The Cuppy Cake Song” by Amy Castle. (Original video here.) “Ice Cream Man” by Van Halen. We present to you, “Quadrupels, Cupcakes and Cranberry Juice.” (A few of my favorite things.)
