Long after acute infection has resolved, many survivors of severe COVID-19 experience persistent symptoms. Understanding the causes of long COVID and developing effective treatments pose a challenge for clinicians and researchers alike. In this episode of the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) Podcast, host Kyle B. Enfield, MD, speaks with Matthew Baldwin, MD, MS, about his article published in the March 2026 issue of Critical Care Explorations that examines post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 in acute lung injury (ALI) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) survivors over a three-year period. One of the study's most notable findings is that approximately one in four study patients, many of whom were middle-aged and previously healthy, continued to meet criteria for long COVID three years after infection. This finding emphasizes the burden of chronic illness caused by COVID-19 infection and the need to focus research and treatment efforts on this population of ALI/ARDS survivors. Drs. Baldwin and Enfield discuss the relevance of inflammatory, thromboinflammatory, and endothelial biomarkers in understanding illness due to COVID-19. Surprisingly, the study found no association between long COVID symptoms and these biomarkers. Dr. Baldwin contextualizes this finding and encourages future studies to employ multiomics to better uncover the underlying mechanisms of these symptoms. The discussion emphasizes the patient-centered approach of the study, which examines functional outcomes as well as biomarkers. Dr. Baldwin encourages clinicians to validate the experiences of severe COVID-19 survivors and guide them towards the next step in their recovery as researchers continue to look for better therapies. April 1973, a quiet suburb outside São Paulo. A twenty-one-year-old mother sits down for the first time all day, and finds the sofa beside her torn open. Nobody's there. Nobody's been there. This week, Yvette Fielding investigates the Guarulhos Poltergeist, Brazil's most thoroughly documented haunting. Slashed furniture, falling stones, spontaneous fires, cuts appearing on skin, and a red-furred beast glimpsed by an entire family. It baffled sceptical scientists, drew in the journalist who'd later crack the Enfield case, and ended up filed inside a real CIA psychic-warfare programme. Was it a curse, conjured by human malice and aimed at one young woman? A mind under unbearable strain? Or something we still have no name for? Listen, and decide for yourself.
We are heading into month four for investigating the mysterious death of a 12-year-old girl in Enfield. Eve Rogers was found dead in her family home back in March; her stepfather is facing sexual assault charges. And now new evidence shows a lethal dose of Benadryl in the little girl's body. What does this new discovery mean for the investigation? We asked law enforcement expert, Gary MacNamara.
“It appeared that in a single day Janet had levitated, traveled out of her physical body, made a book go through the wall from one room to another and caused a heavy cushion to travel from a closed room onto the roof. It did not sound possible, but five different people were certain it had all happened.” – Guy Lyon Playfair, This House Is Haunted How can a thing be true and false at the same time? Frightening and funny? Scary and dull? Real and unreal? How can something be itself -- and its own opposite? Easy: it's a poltergeist. For over two years the Hodgson family in Enfield, England were plagued with a poltergeist that simultaneously played by – and broke – all the rules of poltergeistery. As usual, there were cries of fraud from the very beginning. And as usual, there were dozens of witnesses to phenomena that could have no earthly explanation. Psychic investigators Guy Lyon Playfair and Maurice Grosse spent hundreds of hours living with the Hodgson's and documented everything that went on in their house. But what happens when an avalanche of evidence breeds nothing but more skepticism? And what do you do when the very word “poltergeist” seems suddenly too small to describe a display of supernatural effects so vast that the case has been called the greatest haunting in history? In 2009, Richard, his wife Susan, and their three children moved into a house in Pasadena, California that promises to be the culmination of all of Richard's dreams. But that's not exactly how it works out. They say haunted houses are fueled by the stress and anxiety of the families who live inside them. But if that's true, isn't every house a haunted house? For Richard, beyond the dark charm of the bookshelf lined office, the eternal glow of the private wet-bar – and the strange melancholy allure of the swimming pool hidden behind the black, vine-covered fence… lies the truth of every house, every family and every dream that stays hauntingly just out of reach.Buy This House Is Haunted By Guy Lyon Playfair from Bookshop.org HERE. Most real estate investors talk about what worked. Dearonne Bethea is willing to talk about what didn't. In this episode, the CEO of Band of Brothers Investment Group walks through a $500,000 business loss on his first Anytime Fitness franchise, the three mistakes that caused it, and the decisions he made after that eventually led to $200 million in assets under management. Along the way he breaks down the investing philosophy behind his growth: use businesses to generate cash flow, use that cash flow to acquire real estate, and use real estate to eliminate your tax burden. It is a framework built on discipline, hard experience, and a clear-eyed view of what actually creates wealth. About Dearonne Bethea Dearonne Bethea is the CEO of Band of Brothers Investment Group and a retired U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer Four with 20 years of active duty service, including two deployments to Iraq and one to Afghanistan. He built his first businesses while still on active duty, scaled a franchise portfolio across multiple states, and now controls more than $200 million in assets across multifamily, rental housing, operating businesses, and private investments. He is also the founder of Treazure Studios, a salon suite franchise model he launched after trademarking the brand. What We Cover in This Episode Growing up in Enfield, North Carolina, one of the poorest towns in the state, and how limited resources shaped Dearonne's approach to money Joining the Army at 20 as a turning point, and meeting the mentor who introduced him to investing Buying his first tax lien property at age 20 with a car as collateral after being denied a $13,000 loan Building Anytime Fitness franchises while deployed, working 18 to 20 hour days and managing operations remotely The three mistakes that caused a $500,000 loss on his first franchise: poor visibility, wrong demographics, and a bad partnership How he negotiated his way to break even, doubled down with a second location, and eventually sold two locations for $2.6 million The seven business pillars behind his $200M portfolio: franchises, multifamily, property management, brokerage, and his new venture Why he believes businesses create cash flow and real estate creates wealth, and why you need both How he uses real estate professional status and cost segregation to offset income from his businesses The salon suite franchise model behind Treasure Studios and why he designed it around 5,000 to 6,000 square foot locations Why he is stepping away from Anytime Fitness and building a franchise model with fewer employees and more entrepreneurs How he is integrating AI across his organization, including two dedicated AI integrators and an enterprise dashboard build Key Insight Dearonne opened his first Anytime Fitness in Richardson, Texas, lost roughly $500,000, and was burning $8,000 to $10,000 a month. Instead of folding, he wrote down every mistake, negotiated his rent down to break even, and used the remaining capital he had to open a second location at Fort Bragg with military partners who put in $20,000 each. That location was profitable within six months, a cash cow within twelve, and both locations sold for $2.6 million. He calls the $500,000 loss one of the best things that ever happened to him. Why This Episode Matters Dearonne's framework is one of the more practical models for investors who want to accelerate beyond passive real estate income: generate serious cash flow through a business, deploy that cash flow into real estate, and use the real estate to offset your tax liability. If you are a rental property owner thinking about how to scale faster or structure your portfolio more efficiently, this conversation gives you a concrete model to study. The Backwoods Cryptid Road Trip pulls into Illinois, and this stop earns its keep. In the spring of 1973, in the little farm town of Enfield down in White County, a quiet, sober man named Henry McDaniel opened his front door and met something that stood about four and a half feet tall, walked on three legs, held up two stubby arms, and stared back at him with two pinkish-red eyes the size of flashlight lenses. He emptied four rounds from a .22 into it at close range, swore he hit it, and watched it hiss like a wildcat and leap fifty feet in three bounds toward the L and N railroad tracks. State troopers came out and documented claw marks gouged into his siding and a set of six-toed, dog-like tracks with a mismatched third print. The Enfield Horror was loose, and a small Illinois town spent the next two weeks coming apart over it.This episode runs the whole case the way a former cop reads a file. We cover the boy next door, Greg Garrett, who reported being attacked half an hour before McDaniel and later told university researchers it had been a prank, and why that recantation gets weighed rather than buried. We get into McDaniel's second sighting along the tracks at three in the morning, the five armed monster hunters arrested by a fed-up deputy, the White County sheriff threatening to jail McDaniel for talking, the Indiana radio newsman Rick Rainbow who claimed to record the creature's screaming cry, and cryptozoologist Loren Coleman, who investigated the case in person and walked away without an answer. We lay out every theory on the table, from escaped kangaroo to bottomland ape to mass hysteria to the saucer-and-demon crowd, and sort the evidence from the noise. Then we open up the rest of Illinois, because Enfield didn't happen in a vacuum. The state caught a kind of monster fever in those years, and we trace it from the start. We head to Farmer City and Salt Creek, where a pale, yellow-eyed giant ran four campers out of their tents in 1970, walked across a police officer's headlights, and left tracks that the state's own game wardens couldn't name.We go up to Pekin and East Peoria for the Cole Hollow Road Monster, Cohomo, the white-haired Bigfoot panic that flooded police lines with over 200 calls, pulled a hundred armed men into the woods, and turned out to have started as a teenager's hoax that still didn't explain everything that came after it. And we close on the Big Muddy, with the Murphysboro Mud Monster of 1973, the mud-caked, river-stinking, eight-foot creature that scared a Murphysboro officer into running, smeared slime on the trees that a cop touched with his own hand, walked into the middle of a carnival, and got tracked by a trained police dog to the door of an abandoned barn.Three-legged terror, hairy giants, river bottoms, gunfire, K-9 units, and a state that never quite goes quiet. This is Illinois, and something is always walking at the edge of the tree line.Have you experienced a Bigfoot sighting, Sasquatch encounter, Dogman experience, UFO sighting, or any unexplained cryptid or paranormal event deep in the woods? We want to hear your story.Email your encounter to brian@paranormalworldproductions.com for a chance to be featured on a future episode of Backwoods Bigfoot Stories.Backwoods Bigfoot Stories is a paranormal storytelling podcast featuring real Bigfoot encounters, Sasquatch sightings, Dogman reports, cryptid experiences, and true scary stories from the backwoods.Follow the show and turn on automatic downloads so you never miss a chilling encounter from the forest. Sometimes the best games of cricket aren't ones where the ball is smashed everywhere. Week 6 in the MCCL is a great example of that. Twickenham pull off a miracle and win with only 78 on the board, West Harrow (somehow) nearly defend 39 against Enfield. Harrow Town win despite posting only 106, Ally Pally just about chase 101. Horror history gets weird, reflective, and dangerously snackable this week as This Week in Horror History travels through June 8–14 with mischievous monsters, haunted hotels, supernatural comedy, demonic hauntings, creepy mirrors, and one killer dessert that may be eating America alive. This episode digs into a packed week of classic horror movies, cult horror sequels, supernatural blockbusters, 1980s horror, haunted-house horror, and strange consumer-satire body horror, including the release of Gremlins, the same-day arrival of Ghostbusters, the wider theatrical expansion of The Shining, the hit sequel The Conjuring 2, and the mirror-filled nightmare of Poltergeist III.Inside this episode:• Gremlins turns one cute little mogwai into small-town monster chaos and helps push Hollywood toward the PG-13 rating.• Ghostbusters brings haunted libraries, demonic possession, rooftop apocalypse, and paranormal exterminators into one of the biggest supernatural comedy franchises ever.• The Shining expands wider in U.S. theaters, pulling more audiences into Stanley Kubrick's cold, hypnotic nightmare inside the Overlook Hotel.• The Conjuring 2 sends Ed and Lorraine Warren to the Enfield haunting and introduces one of modern horror's most memorable demonic figures.• The Deep-Cut Spotlight goes to Poltergeist III, the strange 1988 sequel that traps Carol Anne inside a haunted Chicago high-rise full of mirrors, elevators, cold hallways, and unfinished supernatural business.Plus: a horror birthday roll featuring Johnny Depp, Natalie Portman, Jurgen Prochnow, and Adrienne Barbeau, a creepy look at how horror sneaks into family homes, hotels, corporate towers, grocery aisles, and blockbuster comedy, and a weekly recommendation for Larry Cohen's weird, gross, and sharply satirical cult classic The Stuff. From mogwai mayhem and ghost exterminators to haunted reflections, demonic forces, the Overlook Hotel, and a mysterious dessert that might be consuming its customers from the inside out, this week proves horror can invade almost anything: your home, your hotel room, your movie theater, your refrigerator, and your appetite.

He is one of Britain's most high-energy comics, but Russell Kane's story begins far from the world he now inhabits: on a council estate, in a home shaped by discipline, class tension and a rigid idea of masculinity. What followed was not a straight line to success, but a series of reinventions powered by anger, ambition and the discovery that books could open doors his upbringing never knew existed. In this episode of Full Disclosure, James O'Brien sits down with Russell to explore how a bright, restless boy from Enfield became a comic, writer, broadcaster and storyteller with an insatiable appetite for reinvention.Russell looks back on a childhood dominated by his father's force of personality, a school life in which fitting in often mattered more than applying himself, and the moment everything changed: a late awakening to education that sent him hurtling towards A-levels, university and a career in advertising. He explains how that same momentum eventually pulled him towards stand-up, where the risk of failure became part of the thrill. They discuss class, reading and the seductive force of self-improvement; the emotional legacy of being loved but not always understood; the tension between public success and private insecurity; and why children's books, biohacking and Shakespeare all make sense within Russell Kane's ever-expanding world.Funny, frank and full of nervous energy, this is a conversation about family, class, ambition and the lifelong process of working out who you are.Find out more about When Brian Met Terry by Russell Kane hereFull Disclosure is a Global ProductionListen or watch every Friday on Global Player, YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts.EXCLUSIVE NordVPN Deal -> https://nordvpn.com/fulldisclosure Try it risk-free now with a 30-day money-back guarantee

Read a more in-depth article about Candyman: https://weirddarkness.com/candyman-love-story/Say his name five times in a mirror, and Candyman, a vengeful spirit born from love, betrayal, and unspeakable violence, will appear to continue his blood-soaked legend across generations.*No AI Voices Are Used In The Narration Of This Podcast*IN THIS EPISODE: If you look in a mirror and say his name five times, he will appear behind you, complete with a hook for a hand – covered in blood because his hand has been cut off. Isn't that romantic? No? Well, Clive Barker's 1992 horror cult classic “Candyman” actually began as a real-life love story. So how did it turn so gruesome and terrifying? (The Nightmarish Love Story Behind Horror's Candyman) *** The Enfield Poltergeist has become infamous thanks to Ed and Lorraine Warren and “The Conjuring” films. That took place in a house in Brimsdown, Enfield, London England. But on the other side of the pond there is an Enfield, Illinois. Not as well known as the one in England of course, but they still have a horror in their past. One that took place four years before the Enfield incident in London… about a terrifying creature that locals who were alive at the time still get goosebumps talking about. (The Horror of the Enfield, Illinois Monster) *** Complex family dynamics and an infatuated businessman ended in a murder that was covered up and remained hidden for three decades, buried in the grounds of the house at 10324 Canyon Road. (A Dark Secret Leads To a Death On Canyon Road) *** One girl decided to go by the name of Lila, because her true name was Delilah but she didn't want to be associated with that harlot in the Bible. The stories behind how people get nicknames can often be fascinating. So how do you supposed Margaret Dickson got tagged with the nickname of “Half Hangit Maggie”? (Half Hangit Maggie) *** The search for intelligent life in the universe has been a goal for decades, with everyone from NASA to SETI to backyard Ufologists looking to the skies, listening to various radio waves, hoping to catch just a glimpse, at least a hint of what we hope to find. But could it be that we're looking in the wrong place? Perhaps the extraterrestrial intelligence, the more advanced life we seek to make contact with, is not out there somewhere… but it is here somewhere… already on Earth? (There Might Be Intelligent Life On Earth After All) *** Too often we are let down by those whom we look up to – and that goes doubly so for those in religious authority. How many well-known religious figures have toppled over after being exalted on high by the followers they so skillfully misled? Jim Bakker, Robert Tilton, Ted Haggard, Jimmy Swaggart… but none compare to Major Thomas Weir – a strict Presbyterian known for his powerful prayers, earning him a reputation for being one of the most saintly men of his time. But then he made a confession so outlandish, so ghastly and profane, they executed him. You can be like them by clicking here: https://www.patreon.com/EVNewsDailyUSED EV SUPPLY SET TO JUMPOver 300,000 EVs are expected to come off lease in 2026, driven by a post-2022 surge in EV leasing fuelled by a federal tax credit loophole under the Inflation Reduction Act. Used EVs are already selling faster than petrol cars, making the incoming supply wave a significant affordability opportunity for buyers.GLOBAL EV SALES FALL AS CHINA CORRECTS, EUROPE MOVES FORWARDGlobal EV sales hit 1.1 million units in February 2026, down 11% year-over-year, with year-to-date totals of 2.2 million units, down 8% versus 2025. Europe was the standout performer, up 21% year-to-date, with Italy posting a record February thanks to subsidies of up to €20,000, while North America fell 36% and China dropped 26% though Chinese EV exports surpassed 500,000 units.PROLOGUE STUMBLES ON AS HONDA RETREATS FROM EVSHonda has cancelled three planned US EVs — the 0 Series SUV, 0 Series Saloon, and Acura RSX — citing declining EV demand and the rollback of US EV incentives under the Trump administration. Honda is pivoting back to hybrids, and reports suggest the Prologue will also end production in December, though Honda has called that speculation.BYD SETS PARIS DEBUT FOR FLASH CHARGINGBYD will unveil its Flash Charging technology and the Denza Z9 GT in Paris on 8 April, showcasing a second-generation Blade Battery that charges from 10% to 97% in nine minutes. The Flash Chargers can deliver up to 1,500 kW using two cables simultaneously, though BYD has not confirmed European cable standards or peak output for that market.GERMAN MOTORWAY CHARGING OPENS TO COMPETITIONA Düsseldorf court ruled on 6 March that Germany's motorway EV charging market must open to full competition, ending Tank & Rast's de-facto monopoly over fast charging at around 360 motorway service areas. The decision, brought by Fastned, requires open tenders for charging installations later in 2026 and could set a Europe-wide precedent for breaking up incumbent charging monopolies.UK POWER NETWORKS STARTS UK-FIRST V2G TRIALUK Power Networks and Octopus Energy have launched a vehicle-to-grid trial in Amersham, Worthing, and Enfield, allowing EV owners to feed power back to the grid during peak demand. The initiative includes automatic approval of V2G charger connections — a UK first — with UK Power Networks approving 80% of requests compared to the national average of just 11%.GOVERNMENT HOLDS LINE ON ZEV REVIEWThe UK government has rejected industry calls to bring forward the ZEV mandate review, maintaining a 2026 review with findings due in early 2027. Ministers say the timetable will properly identify pressure points, though the car industry's lobby group SMMT argues the transition was built on assumptions that have since proved incorrect.ZERO SELLS XB AND XE DIRECTZero Motorcycles will sell its XB and XE electric dirt bikes directly to consumers online, shipping them in a crate for home assembly of key components like the battery and front fork. Dealers will continue to sell and service both models, with the direct channel aimed at streamlining fulfilment and better competing with electric off-road rivals.BMW TEASES 2027 7 SERIES REFRESHBMW has teased the updated 2027 7 Series ahead of its world premiere next month, with the mid-cycle refresh retaining the kidney grille rather than adopting Neue Klasse styling. The i7 electric variant is expected to receive a larger battery, silicon carbide inverters for better efficiency, and the full-width Panoramic Vision display from the iX3.NISSAN TO END LEAF REMOTE APP ACCESSNissan will shut down the NissanConnect EV app on 30 March, stripping remote charging, pre-heating, and battery monitoring from older Leaf models and e-NV200 vans. The move has drawn criticism from owners who note EVs often remain in use for over 12 years, highlighting a broader industry problem where digital features can become obsolete long before the vehicle itself does.

Welcome back, to Dark Realms. In this episode, we look beyond the Enfield headlines to explore the extraordinary wider career of Guy Lyon Playfair, the Cambridge-educated journalist and psychical researcher most famously associated with the Enfield poltergeist. However, long before Enfield, Playfair was immersed in some of the most violent and disturbing poltergeist cases ever recorded during his investigations in Brazil in the early 1970s, where first hand encounters with rapping sounds, flying objects, spontaneous fires and physical attacks transformed him from skeptic to investigator. Today we look at two terrifying cases, and argue that history has unfairly reduced Playfair to a single case, overlooking a career spent confronting some of the darkest and most compelling mysteries in modern paranormal research.Stay Safe,Kevin. We're giving a full weeks trial of our Patreon away! In the summer of 1977, single mother Margaret Hodgson called the police to her council estate apartment in Enfield, London to report that she and her two daughters, Janet and Peggy, had seen furniture move in the apartment and were hearing strange noises coming from within the walls. That simple albeit unusual call set in motion a chain of events that would thrust the unassuming Hodgson family into the center of a debate about the existence of the supernatural and forever associate them with one of England's most notorious paranormal cases, the Enfield poltergeist.Over the course of roughly eighteen months, the family claimed they were subjected to a variety of supernatural harassment that ranged from moving furniture and knocking in the walls to disembodied voices and even involuntary levitation. Soon after the report was made to the police, the story attracted a variety of news outlets and paranormal investigators, all determined to either prove the case a genuine poltergeist or a hoax perpetrated by two adolescent attention-seeking girls.Nearly fifty years later, the case remains controversial among skeptics and believers, all of whom want to know what exactly did happen in the Hodgson's apartment and who—or what—is to blame for the disturbances.Thank you to the Amazing Dave White (of BRING ME THE AXE PODCAST) for research and writing assistance!
