Hello Poison Friends! It was still Spooky Season while I was researching for this episode, so we are still on this spooky stuff! This week, I want to talk about a controversial couple who claimed to be self taught demonologists and paranormal experts. Ed and Lorraine Warren are famous for investigating such hauntings as those seen in the Conjuring series, Annabelle, and the Amityville haunting. These are not the only cases they worked on, but it is their most famous. You may have already noticed, but Adam is not with me today. He is sick with a not so fun cold, and one of my besties, Lynn Rockett has been kind enough to take his place for this episode. She knows horror movies like the ones we are mentioning so this will be fun. Annabelle, as many of you may already know, is considered to be a cursed or possessed doll with a violent history--if you believe the Warren's stories, at least. This doll has reportedly moved on its own, written ominous notes, somehow stained itself with what looks like blood, and has even attacked a select few directly and indirectly. One of the Warren's stories claims the doll has killed at least one person while in their possession. The Warrens also worked on the hauntings of he Perron in Rhode Island and a family in Enfield, England. The two separate incidents boasted similar happenings such as strange noises, moving furniture, and basic assault of those living in the homes. There are skeptics who believe the Warrens involvement in these cases were based on fraud, exaggeration, or straight up lies, so let's cover the details and witness accounts on all sides. Finally, we need to cover the Amityville haunting. Before we do, however, we need to briefly go over the DeFeo murders that took place in the house where the hauntings were said to have occurred. When the Lutz family moved in little over a year after the brutal crime that took place there, they started experiencing strange sensations and sounds. This escalated to phenomena such as levitation, swarms of flies, and smells and stains showing up in random places. Even this case had its skeptics however, and there were some interesting confessions that came later. The Warrens were well known for their paranormal investigations and their occult museum. It was not until after Ed's death, however, that some controversies worse than lies and fraud about demons and hauntings would come out, and much of the truth about them still feels hidden. In this episode of the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) Podcast, host Kyle B. Enfield, MD, FCCM, welcomes Vincenzo Russotto, MD, of the University of Turin in Turin, Italy to discuss Dr. Russotto's article, “Induction Agents for Tracheal Intubation in Critically Ill Patients,” published in the January 2025 issue of Critical Care Medicine. Drs. Enfield and Russotto explore the decision of which induction drugs to use for patients undergoing tracheal intubation. They discuss research challenges such as the ethics of which drugs can be tested on patients and the emergent nature of many tracheal intubations. Dr. Russotto discusses the advantages and disadvantages of ketamine as an induction agent and describes current clinical thinking on etomidate and propofol. His study made no definitive conclusions but found evidence that ketamine may have a safer profile and etomidate and propofol may be associated with negative effects. Dr. Russotto emphasizes the need to individualize patient treatment and shares examples of induction agent combinations. He encourages clinicians to consider hemodynamic optimization along with the use of intubation agents. Listeners will gain insights to inform patient care. In the summer of 1977, single mother Margaret Hodgson called the police to her council estate apartment in Enfield, London to report that she and her two daughters, Janet and Peggy, had seen furniture move in the apartment and were hearing strange noises coming from within the walls. That simple albeit unusual call set in motion a chain of events that would thrust the unassuming Hodgson family into the center of a debate about the existence of the supernatural and forever associate them with one of England's most notorious paranormal cases, the Enfield poltergeist.Over the course of roughly eighteen months, the family claimed they were subjected to a variety of supernatural harassment that ranged from moving furniture and knocking in the walls to disembodied voices and even involuntary levitation. In 1939 it was requisitioned by the British government whereupon it became a luxurious POW camp for German prisoners. Why treat them so kindly? Well senior Wehrmacht and Nazi officers were lulled into a false sense of security, they let their guard down and discussed war plans, and their murderous outlook openly, all of which were recorded and translated by listeners in the cellars of the house. This episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast presents an interview with Sean Enfield, an essayist, poet, bassist, and educator from Dallas, TX. Currently, he resides in Milwaukee, WI where he is a PhD candidate at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He received his MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Alaska-Fairbanks where he served as the Editor-in-Chief of Permafrost Magazine. Now, he serves as an Assistant Nonfiction Editor at Terrain.org. His essays have been nominated for three Pushcarts and he was featured on NPR's All Things Considered as a finalist for their Three Minute Fiction contest. His debut essay collection, Holy American Burnout!, — the focus of this episode — was the runner-up for the Ann Petry Award, a finalist for The Megaphone Prize, a finalist for River Teeth's Literary Nonfiction Book Prize, and is available now. Threading his experiences both as a Texan student and later as a first-year teacher of predominantly Muslim students at a Texas middle school, Holy American Burnout! weaves personal essay and cultural critique into the historic fabric of Black and biracial identity. In it, Enfield intersects examinations of which voices are granted legitimacy by virtue of school curriculum, the complex relationship between basketball and education for Black and brown students, his students' burgeoning political consciousness during the 2016 presidential campaign, and cultural figures ranging from Kendrick Lamar to Hamlet. These classroom narratives abounding in Holy American Burnout! weave around Enfield's own formative experiences contending with a conflicted biracial family lineage, reenacting the Middle Passage as the only Black student in his 7th grade history class, and moshing in both Christian and secular hardcore pits. As Enfield wrestles with the physical, mental, and emotional burdens that American society places on educators, students, and all relatively conscious minorities in this country, he reaches for an education that better navigates our burnt-out empire.
