Kerre Woodham: We've shown in the past we know how to deal with biosecurity threats

Kerre McIvor Mornings Podcast

A couple of weeks ago we were talking about the farming community and the fact that the latest surveys out showed they didn't have a great deal of confidence or optimism about the future of their livelihoods. And you would have to wonder how they're feeling now with reports of foot and mouth getting closer to New Zealand. A new outbreak in Indonesia, a first for that country, has both Australia and New Zealand on edge. Bali is a popular tourist destination for Kiwis and particularly Aussies, and even though there are no direct flights to Bali from New Zealand, biosecurity officials say they'll be on the lookout for anyone who's traveled there recently.  At the PM's post Cabinet press conference yesterday, she said that if foot and mouth reached New Zealand, all rural trade would be stopped and more than 110,000 jobs would disappear. Biosecurity Minister, Damien O'Connor, put it more bluntly, it's the doomsday disease. And he says officials are doing all they can to prevent the disease arriving on these shores.  So we have to do our bit and we have to be vigilant as well. If you're heading to Bali then you'd want to make sure the shoes, and whatever else you wearing on your feet were washed, anything else that came into contact with any kinds of animals.  Mike Hosking expressed doubt this morning on his show, whether this Government could cope with a biosecurity risk as big as this. But I think successive governments, including this one and their associated departments have shown they can.  Remember the great 2015 Grey Lynn fruit fly hunt? And the subsequent 2019 Auckland fruit fly response that saw around $34 million spent on eradicating a handful of fruit flies. I think it was just over $1 million a fruit fly that they found, which might have been considered an overreaction, but I would say it was money well spent. As the fruit fly if it had established itself here, could have decimated an industry worth $6 billion in domestic sales and exports kiwifruit, honey and the like, gone. And remember M. Bovis? In 2017, the Government made a commitment to eradicating Mycoplasma Bovis and that would have been, or is, a world first. And although the relevant departments were unprepared for such a widespread response. Shock me sideways and color me pink they weren't ready! They rallied. And an independent review found that New Zealand is well on track to being able to make the claim that we are M. Bovis free.  But I think the lessons we can take, is that we know how to get rid of biosecurity threats, thus far. The threat was identified, the threat was eradicated in terms of the fruit fly and in terms of M.Bovis. If the lessons have been learned, that can be adapted to foot and mouth and that should give you some confidence, shouldn't it? That we'll be able to keep this latest by a security threat from establishing itself on our shores? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Breeding biologically efficient livestock with Ross Richards

Head Shepherd

Play Episode Play 31 sec Highlight Listen Later Jun 19, 2022 41:58

This week on the Head Shepherd podcast we have Ross Richards of Romani Farms, Taumarunui, New Zealand.Ross farms in a fairly challenging environment. With warm muggy summers and paddocks surrounded by native bush it is hard to produce good wool even on the best of years. Facial eczema has always been around but with the warmer winters we've had recently the spore counts are getting worse.Ross has spent the last 16  years breeding what he terms a "biologically efficient" sheep to counteract these challenges. Ross has reduced chemical and labour inputs by not dipping or drenching his adult ewes, or treating for facial eczema. He aims to breed to animals that are fit for the environment they are farmed in. Ones that don't need constant propping up with chemicals or management inputs. Like many forward thinking ram breeders, once Ross realised his clients were going elsewhere for shedding sheep, Ross began to breed some of his own. Currently they're no match for the efficiency of Ross's Coopworths, but they're well on their way. Ross's initial plan was to breed a terminal that complemented the Coopworth. Ross has some. first cross sheep that are performing exceptionally well, but hybrid vigour is at play there. Ross says "Why go through the effort of growing wool just to shed it?" and is approaching the hair sheep route, rather than shedding. Ross is also looking at tail length and dag score. "What's the point in making their tail shorter if you still have to dag it?" Reducing both chemical and labour input is important to Ross and he's aware that come sale time his rams may not be the biggest or shiniest. But the time and effort has gone in to test these animals to the absolute limit to really find the top performers. Ross is a firm believer in "asking the silly questions," and says it's often younger or external eyes on his business, asking "but why do you do it this way?" which brings in change. This year he has employed a new full time shepherd which he says has made a significant difference to their business.Ross and Mark run through the once bred heifer system Ross implements on his six different lease blocks. The benefits of using dairy heifers gives him the extra finishing stock he needs without having to over winter too many breeding cows or buy in store stock. This improves his control over the animals (and genetics) but also farm biosecurity which is especially important in these times of M. Bovis. Ross and Marks passions both align in breeding a sheep with high welfare traits that are both easy and productive to farm. It is a great insight into the mind of a sheep breeder.Heads TalkA fly on the boardroom wall. A study of the psycho-social impact of M.bovis on Southland's rural communities had found the Government's response was bureaucratic, inhumane and traumatising to farmers. The University of Otago study also found MPI ignored local knowledge, including that of rural vets. Researchers at the University's Rural Health department presented their two year findings in Winton last night, with MPI present. Gathered farmers were told the intrusive, impractical and inhumane nature of MPI's eradication programme ignored local knowledge, expertise and pragmatism in favour of inefficient bureaucratic processes, which made no sense to farmers.

Ben Graff and I are interviewing Chris Ross today, one of Yorkshire's finest chess players, my team mate in Geoff Brown's Darnall & Handsworth squad in the Sheffield League in the UK - and he also happens to be blind. Can you give us an idea of how STEVE DAVIS got you into chess in the first place? Playing chess around the world, what's been your most unusual experience? You have to manage the clock, your guide dog Bovis (you can hear his squeaky toys in the background), take account of the match situation - how do you juggle all those things? What's been your most satisfying victory so far? You do a lot of chess coaching with quite strong players, what are your top tips for improving your game? What makes a good team Captain? THANKS TO OUR SUPPORTERS! Grandmaster Simon Williams (GingerGM) does super video courses on gingergm.com, and books such as Arkell's Endings. I have won many games with his ideas!
