We've talked about agave straws in previous episodes, but I've been spending more time digging into them. And more than that, I've been spending time reading about – and now speaking with – Dr. Sandra Pascoe Ortiz, who has developed a plastic that is compostable and leaves behind no microplastics. So is this a solution for our plastics problem? Agave Road Trip is a critically acclaimed, award-winning podcast that helps gringx bartenders better understand agave, agave spirits, and rural Mexico. Send us Fan MailA mezcal brand can be more than a label and a flavour profile. We're joined by Alejandra Flores, president and owner of Mayu Mezcal, and her story hits on culture, craft, and a mission that reaches back to Oaxaca and forward to real community impact. She built Mayu to honour her Indigenous grandmother, a woman who never learned to read or write yet still became a fearless businesswoman and lifelong inspiration. We get practical about what separates authentic mezcal from marketing: why organic mezcal certification matters, what “artisanal mezcal” actually means, and how espadin agave and production choices shape a spirit you sip slowly rather than shoot. Alejandra also breaks down mezcal vs tequila, from the regions and agave varieties to the traditional serving ritual with orange slices and sal de chapulín, the famous grasshopper salt from Oaxacan cuisine. If you're curious about entrepreneurship in the spirits industry, this conversation goes behind the curtain on licensing, distributors, and the relationship driven grind of getting bottles into bars, restaurants, casinos, and retailers like Total Wine. Alejandra shares what it's like to be one of the few women mezcaleras, how she keeps momentum through slow growth, and why her long game includes a foundation to support elderly people and stray animals in Oaxaca. Listen, share this with a founder friend, and subscribe plus leave a review so more people can find the show.
There are places that have massive collections of beautiful, small-batch agave spirits, but having the bottles isn't the same as understanding them. And having those bottles, which are often expensive, requires additional expense in training staff. Or, anyway, are most likely going to realize their financial potential with training. But … who does that? Where do agave geeks go to have the geekiest conversations? Adam and Joanna are joined by VinePair Spirits Editor Aaron Goldfarb to break down his list of the 20 Best Mezcals for 2026 and the general state of Mexico's other great agave spirit. While bartenders and aficionados remain deeply enamored with mezcal, commercial success has been limited in scope and confined to a few specific brands. Is the wild, small batch nature of the spirit an insurmountable roadblock to a larger audience? Is the complexity and variety, the very thing that draws some in, a turnoff for most?
I find myself saying “multi-generational wisdom” pretty frequently, in reference to these communities I get to visit in rural Mexico. But when they start talking about how the moon affects their production of agave spirits, or the presence of a pregnant woman, I kind of laugh it off. So what am I missing, where is the truth, and how do I reconcile my own hypocrisy? How often have you heard or read that a brand of Tequila or Mezcal is only using quality agaves? That makes me wonder about those poor, down-market agaves. They deserve love, too, don't they? Last episode I talked with Linda Sullivan about the tumbado process of harvesting agave. This episode … also about tumbado, but with Paulo Rodriguez, the raicillero who brought the method back to Chacala, Jalisco! So, why two episodes about the same thing? I was maybe a bit under the influence when I recorded the episode with Paulo, forgot we'd recorded it, got home, and recorded last week's episode with Linda. IMMERSIVE - The Soundscapes of Oaxaca, Mexico - Colourful Streets, The Zocalo, Busy Markets + A Local Food TourOaxaca, Mexico, had been on my travel list for years, and in 2024, I finally got the chance to experience it for myself. In this immersive soundscape episode of the Winging It Travel Podcast, I take you with me through the colourful streets, lively markets, rooftop cafés and buzzing Zócalo of one of the most atmospheric cities I've ever visited. This episode is all about slowing down and soaking in the vibe of Oaxaca through sound, food and real-time reactions. You'll hear church bells echo through courtyards, market vendors shouting across packed stalls, sizzling street food being cooked fresh in front of me and the energy of locals and travellers filling the city streets from morning until night.I wander through the historic centre trying incredible coffee, exploring famous landmarks like the Oaxaca Cathedral and Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzmán, before diving headfirst into Oaxaca's legendary food scene. From tlayudas and mole to mezcal tastings and local market snacks, this city absolutely lived up to every bit of hype I had built up in my head over the years.Honestly, this became one of my favourite cities I visited during my Central America and Mexico trip. The colours felt brighter, the food tasted richer and the atmosphere was unlike anywhere else I've travelled before. Oaxaca gave me that rare feeling where a destination genuinely exceeds your expectations. So put your headphones in and come walk the streets of Oaxaca with me.
I was listening to Tim McKirdy's podcast “Mezcal's Untold Past, Soaring Present, and Fragile Future,” and he talks about an agave harvesting process called tumbado, where you disconnect the plant from its roots and let it sit there in the field. It was said to be an old practice that had been lost. Even in the podcast, he said he only heard about this from one guy, so I thought, yeah, probably not really a thing. And then I met Paulo Rodriguez in Chacala, Jalisco.Agave Road Trip is a critically acclaimed, award-winning podcast that helps gringx bartenders better understand agave, agave spirits, and rural Mexico. In this episode with Doug Richardson, we talk about all things agave. From how to choose the right species if you are working in California, to naming some of the most extravagan agaves that nobody has yet distilled but that may yield some delicious spirits. For some, planting agaves outside of Mexican soil is a thorny issue, but just as it has happened to grapes, cacao or oranges, I think crops love to travel, and if they happen to fit a different place and culture, they should be given the chance to thrivein those new environments. I may be wrong, but that is where I stand
Send us Fan MailWe cross borders for a Cinco de Mayo pour that rewrites what whiskey can be when the grain, the place, and the people drive the process. With Sierra Norte's Doug French, importer Bob Murphy, and our Whiskey Doctor Randy Ford, we dig into rainbow corn whiskey, heritage agriculture, and how Oaxaca shapes flavor from seed to barrel.• why Sierra Norte moves from mezcal into 100% corn whiskey as a way to use and protect native Oaxacan corn • how reviving endangered corn varieties supports farmers, creates local jobs, and builds community pride • what “rainbow corn” means and why different corn colours create distinct whiskey flavour profiles • Oaxaca farming realities, rainy-season growing, drought risk, and traditional corn-beans-squash planting • pot still distillation, open-air fermentation with wild yeast, and why slow distilling keeps grain character • barrel strategy with used French oak wine barrels, re-charring, and managing accelerated aging in warm climates • how Mexican whiskey fits into a crowded US market and a Mexico market that still leans toward tequila, mezcal, and Scotch www.scotchybourbonboys.com for all things scotchy bourbon boys. Make sure you check out all of our whiskey. No matter whether you listen to us or watch us, make sure that you leave us good feedback, become members.Mexico doesn't just make tequila and mezcal. We sit down with Doug French of Sierra Norte in Oaxaca, plus importer and distributor Bob Murphy and our own Whiskey Doctor Randy Ford, to unpack a whiskey story built on native corn, hard farming realities, and a distilling philosophy that keeps the grain doing the talking. If you've ever assumed “real whiskey” starts and ends in Kentucky, this one challenges that fast.We get into what makes Sierra Norte's corn whiskeys so distinctive: single-varietal expressions made from different colours of native corn, plus the wild-sounding “rainbow corn whiskey” created from multicoloured kernels that can't be cleanly sorted. Along the way we talk terroir in plain terms: Oaxaca's water scarcity, rainy-season growing, drought risk, and the traditional corn-beans-squash approach that helps fields stay productive. The bigger takeaway is that heritage agriculture and craft spirits can reinforce each other when the market rewards farmers for keeping rare seeds alive. Then we go inside the build: pot still distillation, open-air fermentation with natural yeast, and aging choices designed for balance rather than heavy wood. Doug explains how used French oak wine barrels, re-charring, and careful barrel management can shape a corn-forward whiskey in a warmer climate where aging can move faster. We also touch the business side of world whiskey, from the oversupplied US market to why whiskey remains a smaller category inside Mexico, and how distribution and online shipping help niche bottles find the right drinkers. If you're curious about Mexican whiskey, corn varietals, and what “Whiskey Without Borders” really tastes like, press play, share this with a whiskey friend, and leave us a review so more people can find the show. There's a graph in the latest report from the Distilled Spirits Council of the US that shows that for the first time in recent history, we're drinking more spirits than we are either beer or wine. I was talking with a brand owner about the process used to make his Tequila, and when he described his fermenters, I asked if they were indoors or outdoors. I hadn't realized the regulations required them to be indoors – or, anyway, he said they did, though I found nothing in the NOM to corroborate that. But … he said they did because when you go around to these traditional vinatas, it was disgusting to see all the birds pooping in the fermenters.

Just like the smoky agave base lifted by fresh lime and a subtle salted edge, this set is packed with high energy, uplifting moments, and irresistible groove. Funky rhythms, driving basslines, and vibrant melodic touches flow effortlessly together, creating a refreshing yet powerful journey. It's a mix that feels bright and punchy while maintaining depth — much like a well-balanced Mezcal Margarita that delivers both intensity and smoothness in every sip. Emerging from Türkiye's dynamic electronic music scene, Ece has built her reputation with sets that blend Afro House rhythms, House and Tech House grooves, and melodic atmospheres. Santos Serfaty, co-founder of Zancudo Mezcal, has traversed the world while working in many restaurants and bars. This transnational lifestyle has led to him learning many languages, and learning many lessons about life. Nomadic in ways, and tremendously ground in others, Santos has settled in Mexico City to finally find his home. Through his love of food and cocktails, Santos was introduced to mezcal and a direct path to Oaxaca. Afters years of blending, tasting, and exploring, Zancudo Mezcal was finally born. We chat drums, proofing, and design.
Earlier this month, journalist Claudia Rosel released three Mezcal stories via the AP. Some of the agave nerds derided the stories as “at least 5 years late.” But I'd suggest they didn't understand the stories. Or maybethey don't understand the lifecycle of agave? One of the most extravagant expressions I've had in a long time is Mauricio Cantú's Sotol, produced in Cuatrociénegas, Coahuila. I had the privilege of visiting this territory, and I can testify that everything up there is unique, from the soil to the technologies they have used over time. I welcome you to this unlikely episode. I hope you enjoy it!
On this episode, I sit down with Amal Flores, owner/operator of Hermanito, to talk about the restaurant's new location at the corner of Broadway and Lincoln Blvd. in Santa Monica, CA, in the former Swingers Diner space. We get into how this new location came together, what it means to step into such an iconic spot, and how the team has worked to pay homage to the history of the space while creating something fresh for the neighborhood. It's a great conversation about vision, respect for local history, and what it takes to bring new life to a well-known Santa Monica location. We also get to try some of the Hermanito branded Mezcal!
That guacamole you just made from scratch? Well, did you make the molcajete you used to grind the onions, cilantro, chiles, and salt? Did you make the gunpowder and sledgehammer you used for the Exploding Hammers Festival? Some people buy bottles to drink now. Some people buy to drink later. Some people buy special bottles to share when special guests are over having a special meal. And some people buy to squirrel away those bottles that they expect they can sell for more money in a few years. How does that affect the marketplace for Mezcal?Agave Road Trip is a critically acclaimed, award-winning podcast that helps gringx bartenders better understand agave, agave spirits, and rural Mexico. It was a total blast recording this episode with Evelio Mattos and the incredible founders of Perro Verde Mezcal, Juan Santiago Rodriguez and Mariana Carvajal. This wasn't just a conversation about spirits; it was a masterclass in how brand story, heritage, and “un-compromised” design come together to create something truly rare—or as they say in Spanish, a Perro Verde.
We have award winning actor Bryan Cranston on the podcast this week! He's the star of Breaking Bad, Malcolm in the Middle, and currently starring in the West End in the play All My Sons, and he's popped round for lunch before his show that evening. We covered everything from working with Tom Hanks, his love of TV dinners, creating a Mezcal brand with Aaron Paul, embracing his fatherly role on every set, his daily routine for London's West End, filming The Studio with Seth Rogen & Catherine O'Hara, and we hear what it was like when he tried mushrooms in Las Vegas during filming! Plus we hear possibly the strangest nostalgic smell any guest has ever revealed on the podcast before… Talking to Bryan was a complete delight, he has the most soothing voice and we could listen to his stories for hours. Basically he needs his own podcast! You can catch Bryan's play All My Sons at the Wyndham's Theatre until the 7th of March, you don't want to miss it. Hosted on Acast. With a history spanning 2,000 years and still playing a vital role in global commerce, the oak barrel, as correspondent Bill Whitaker discovers, is much more than just a container. Barrels are a vital ingredient, especially in the production of Bourbon whiskey – giving it all of its distinctive color and much of its taste. Whitaker takes us inside the largest maker of wooden barrels to glimpse the magic and mystique of this essential tradition. International crime groups are finding new, sophisticated ways to infiltrate the global supply chain online, stealing hundreds of millions of dollars of goods per year. Correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi reports on the growing threat of cargo theft and how 24,000 bottles of Guy Fieri's tequila vanished on their way to the warehouse. Mezcal is having its moment. This handcrafted Mexican spirit, made from agave, has seen exponential growth in popularity and production. Correspondent Cecilia Vega travels to Oaxaca's countryside and meets the mezcaleros laboring to quench the world's thirst for mezcal.
