Sarah Abrams and Virginia Benson Wigle join host Sharon for this warm-hearted conversation about their friendship, their Process experience, and the non-profit they founded, The Starfish Connection. Virginia attended the Hoffman Process at the urging of her husband, John. Years later, John passed away. Virginia, in turn, passed the Hoffman Process on to Sarah, and then to her new husband. Giving the gift of the Process to someone ready and willing to attend is a profound way to pass along the gifts discovered during the week. The seed for The Starfish Connection came from John's dying words - "Our story." The vision for The Starfish Connection, the non-profit Virginia founded, began as storytelling. Now, it focuses on giving gifts to people needing momentary help without expecting anything in return. John's gift continues to grow with numerous gifts given through Starfish. This conversation begins with what's possible in a friendship when two people have had powerful transformations in the Process and have come to trust each other profoundly. The way that Sarah and Virginia are there for each other is what gives their friendship such a strong foundation. We hope you enjoy this heartening conversation. Follow The Starfish Connection on Instagram. You can reach The Starfish Connection by email at hello@thestarfishconnection.org. More about Sarah Abrams: Sarah Abrams is a seasoned entrepreneur and has navigated various industries with curiosity and creativity. As the Executive Director of The Starfish Connection, she demonstrates her commitment to fostering community through giving and sharing her love of writing and storytelling. Her journey as a serial entrepreneur underscores her versatility and passion to create products and services that serve her community. From launching a software startup to creating a floral and event company, and a children's toy store, Sarah has a history of innovation and adaptability. Her ventures showcase her creativity and her knack for sustainable business practices. More about Virginia Benson Wigle: Virginia Benson Wigle is the founder of The Starfish Connection, the nonprofit organization whose mission is to make a difference, one life at a time by providing crisis funding grants to individuals and families facing sudden financial crises. Virginia has passionately served in the nonprofit sector throughout Santa Barbara County for over thirty years. Before devoting her work full-time to The Starfish Connection, Virginia spent twenty years at Planned Parenthood of Santa Barbara, Ventura, and San Luis Obispo in varying positions from clinic staff to education, and administration. She ultimately served as Vice President of Education before retiring in 2015. She also served two terms on the California State Legislative Committee for Planned Parenthood affiliates in Sacramento. Meredith Meyer Grelli is the co-founder of the Wigle Whiskey Distillery. In 2010, Meredith and her family decided to open a distillery in the City of Pittsburgh as the first one since Prohibition. Naming their whiskey after the leader of the 1794 Whiskey Rebellion, Phillip Wigle, they needed Pennsylvania's laws to change before opening their doors. Over the past 12 years, their patience and innovation paid off. Wigle has been the most awarded craft whiskey distillery for five consecutive years. Meredith joins host Laurie Barkman for a conversation on innovation – from creating a robust product development process for growth, innovating from a people perspective, and setting up the organization for sustainable success. Episode 151 : The Sara Show! Nick and Sara sit down this week and drink! We talk about Friday the 13th and scary movies. We try not to steal too much thunder from Halloween is Forever. Sara recounts her scariest movies of her childhood, including Poltergeist and The Ring. Nick brings up The Faculty as a horror movie for some reason? After we talk about X-Files, we transistion back to beer. For TIPA Thursday Nick is drinking the Four Points 4.3 anniversary Triple IPA. We re-cap our week at Wigle whisky on Thursday, followed by the Necromancer x Millie's collab on Friday night. Coffee ice cream and an oatmeal stout were the perfect pairing, according to Nick. Both Nick and Sara love Necromancer's beer. Saturday was a low key night, but we made up for it on Sunday with an exciting day of visiting a bunch of breweries! Necromancer was first (with a little tour from Scottro) and the Wild Child pop up brunch, along with the Fueled by Hops giveaway from Sunday. Next on the list was Voodoo Homestead for the Zangief bottle pick up and a draft. After that, we obviously hit Dancing Gnome. Then finally, we went grocery shopping. After that we stopped at Four Points taproom before heading home. For dinner we went back out to Eleventh Hour to track down The Boonseek. We talk about our upcoming events and what's going on. We talk about Barrel and Flow taking a hard stand on COVID protocols. We wrap with plugging the upcoming festivals and then revisit the Friday the 13th movies to finish off episode 151. Sam Huston and Sam Graham open this week's Premier League coverage with West Ham United at the top of the table, then dig into the surprising sides at 2-0. Graham laments the loss to Chelsea Football Club and admits Arsenal is just a mid-table club. Big Sam is happy with Everton Football Club's draw at Leeds United and producer Mel is tickled with Ings's strike for Aston Villa FC's win over Newcastle United. The “Gin-Binge” rolls on as the crew enjoys Wigle's barrel rested Ginever with Q tonic and a dash of lavender bitter's. Finally the gang announced their new T-Shirt store the DU Drip Shack! Professionally he is an expert in the liquor business, but for fun he yells at men from the sidelines and calls it coaching. Huston has been an Everton fan for about ten years, so he shaves his head to look like Tim Howard. He is very much aware that he has a great voice, and he once played the Big Bopper in the musical Buddy Holly. Huston's style is influenced by the DC area talk radio of the 90's and early 2000's. oh, and he was once a parade. sam Graham has been playing soccer for 30 years and counting, but he's been running his mouth for over 33 years. Professionally he is in the wine and spirits industry, but for fun, he lets Coach Huston yell at him once a week while he's on the pitch. He might be getting “too old for this shit” but he still can't resist the excitement of the game, and the thrill of a red card. Graham is an Arsenal supporter since '02 and has the tattoos to prove it. He really knows his football, and has been preparing for this podcast through years of shit talking at pubs.

Sometimes it seems like getting healthy means hitting an arbitrary goal weight and calling it a day. Of course, nothing could be further from the truth. Hitting that weight can be a great thing, but this is usually just step 1. The unexpected question that so many of us face when we finally achieve that first, hard-won goal is… now what? That's the question that Michelle Wigle (@michworksout) wrestled with at the outset of her health transformation. In the early days, she had such a singular focus on weight that she felt like “a slave to the scale.” Contrary to her expectations, reaching that goal weight didn't solve all her problems. In order to figure out what healthy maintenance looked like, Michelle had to reassess her motivation for losing weight altogether. Finding that answer involved a life-threatening accident that changed the way she understood health, family, and physical fitness forever. In this episode, Michelle shares how she initially overcame a lifelong struggle with her weight, real tips on how to find balance and stay in maintenance once she lost 65 pounds, and how she discovered the right mindset for achieving lifelong health and wellness. Better by the Day is produced by WayBetter, the app that makes health and fitness fun with new group challenges starting weekly. To join a challenge, download WayBetter in the App store.Follow along with Michelle on Instagram (@michworksout).

With tens of thousands of bar and restaurant workers around the world laid off because of mandatory bar and restaurant closings due to the Covid-19 pandemic, some bar owners are resorting to drastic measures to support their teams during the crisis. Bill Thomas of Washington, DC's Jack Rose Dining Saloon and his partners have been selling off the whiskey bar's legendary library of nearly 3,000 bottles - either by the full bottle or single-serving drams - while they evaluate their persona collections to see what makes the cut for the bar's wall when it reopens. We'll talk with Bill on WhiskyCast In-Depth, along with Meredith Meyer Grelli of Pittsburgh's Wigle Whiskey. She's performing the typical small business owner's chainsaw juggling routine of switching from distilling and a tasting room to e-commerce sales while trying to find out why her bank dropped the ball on processing Wigle's paperwork for a federal small business relief program. In the news, the rash of coronavirus-related whisky event cancellations is spreading to Kentucky, where some of this fall's major Bourbon events have already been cancelled while the Kentucky Bourbon Festival's new CEO is hoping to go ahead with Bardstown's big party. Bourbon Street in New Orleans will be quieter this July with the cancellation of Tales of the Cocktail, and in Scotland, police are investigating an attack by hackers that targeted a major online whisky auction this week.

Snowden said this week: "I wouldn't use WiFi at home, because global maps of every wireless access point's unique ID—including yours—are free and constantly updated. This is technically Part 3 with Rich Gibson, the newly elected State's Attorney for Howard County. Rich came in for an earlier recording session which had recording audio difficulties but we were able to salvage this from the archives. It is arguably our funniest episode yet!!!! Rich has a long career as a prosecutor. He started out in Prince George's County and then spent 12 years in the Baltimore City State's Attorney's Office handling murders, shootings, and major investigations before being elected to the top job in his home county. He has a ton of experience and will bring that experience and knowledge to his new job in Howard County. This week we're sampling Wigle's Ginever Gin in a Gin Rickey. Here is some information on Ginever Gin (short version, it's a whiskey based gin, distilled in a copper pot, not a vodka based gin like common gin's). Top topics include a deep discussion into the life of an elected politician and how Rich's new job differs from what his expectations were. Plus what his plans are for the Howard County SAO. This week the guy's discuss: Prosecutors v. Defense attorney v. Civil attorney, what your experience is defines your view of a case I Can't Believe it's not Baltimore: Zookeeper sells tigers and hires a hitman to kill his rival. NYC's Nunchuck ban is unconstitutional, Karate-men rejoice. NASA may only have Female astronauts on their mission to Mars to avoid, um...complications. Can they do this and is this valid under the EEOC...and practically will it stop the problem? Drink review From Wigle's website: Awarded 2018 Best Gin in the Country by the American Craft Spirit Association. Inspired by a 19th century Pennsylvanian distiller’s recipe, Wigle’s Organic Gin brings back a lost gem of distillation. For the first 600 years of its existence, gin was made from a whiskey base in a copper pot still. This Genever or Dutch-style gin became less popular after the invention of the modern industrial still. Vodka based gins dominate liquor store shelves today. With a grain mash of rye, wheat, malted barley, and a complex family of botanicals, Ginever is rounder and fuller than modern gins. Juniper berries remain forefront but are joined by a number of other botanicals including earthy cardamom, peppery cubeb and fragrant lavender create a layered flavor experience. As with all Wigle products, this handcrafted spirit is made from scratch in our copper pot still in very small batches, using only organic ingredients and local heirloom grains. It’s perfect for whiskey and gin lovers alike. Lawyers on the Rocks features Jeremy Eldridge, Kurt Nachtman and Adam Crandell. This triumvirate of lawyers will give you their unsolicited opinion on everything legal and illegal, while enjoying a handcrafted cocktail. Lawyers on the Rocks is sponsored by the Law Office of Eldridge, Nachtman & Crandell, LLC and produced by Up Next Creative, LLC.

The Jody Raffoul Band will be performing three CD Release shows at The Bank Theatre in Leamington (November 30 - December 2) with an opening performance from Jody’s son Billy Raffoul, who is now out in L.A. developing his own musical career. Meredith Meyer Grelli dreamed up Wigle Whiskey in 2010 and with her family by her side, the distillery has had national attention, warranting recognition as a James Beard semi finalist and they’re the most awarded craft distillery in the US by the American Craft Spirit Association. Just last year, Wigle even spawned a Cidery -- Threadbare. Meredith is at the center of creating this rebellious line of spirits, and she shared with us her journey to where she is and what is going on with women in the alcohol industry. Hey there, D2Dreeps. Are you ready for a marathon of Chirdon…a…Chirdonathon? Sure you are. I promise. Here we (…Greg, Heather, Chris, Jeff, […Ralph, Johnnie too…]…) sample a variety of Wigle spirits. Here Greg guides a tasting. A tad inebriated, but still a sturdy guide. (Likely if you read that immediately previous phrase too quickly, you processed, “study guide,” but that’s not what it says. Look again. Yep. Sturdy.) Guide. Here we learn about the origins of this quartet. Like the Beatles, but without all the fame and musical talent, though Jeffrey can fart the Star Spangled Banner if you give him enough cheap Canadian bacon. Here we talk about the Atari 2600 game, “E.T. The Extraterrestrial,” (…redundant much, Spielberg…) and Steve, the bird who sounds like perhaps your chair is squeaking. (Don’t worry, your chair isn’t squeaking. That’s Steve. [Actually, what the hell do I know? Your chair may very well be squeaking. Annoying, innit? But so is Steve. Not annoying…squeaking. And that might annoy you. It shouldn’t though…really he’s kinda cute. Oh hell, Steve will be, particularly near the beginning of the podcast, at least one thing squeaking in your ear. That I know. End of paragraph.]) Here we discuss the things that made and make us…and, if we’re being entirely honest, will continue to make us…drink. Here we end the podcast with no closing music given time constraints and the fact that the Greg typing this post is currently too damn drunk to figure shit out. (So why is he trying to post this right now?) Good question, ask that drunk asshole. (Which is me.) So ask me. (But I won’t answer, so don’t ask.) K? K We present to you, “Shaler Rollin’ (Chirdonathon, pt 1).” ShAT. Shaler Area Titans. Yeah. The acronym is ShAT.
Strap in for a five part extravaganza of classic cocktails, a cappella reminiscing, friendship woes, and professional wrestling. Yes, today we meet my friend Mark, whose heart and brain are exceptionally large and often in conflict. Wait, that’s me. Yes, today we meet my friend Mark, whose self-flagellating Catholic guilt runs deep and contrary to his tendency towards myopic judgement. Wait, that’s also me. Ahem…yes, today we meet my friend Mark, whose thoughtfulness is outshone only by his verbosity and tendency toward prepubescent boy humor. Shit…also me. Okay, apparently you’re meeting me today. Have fun with that. We begin with a discussion of “the facilities,” otherwise known as wherever I am with whatever I happen to have with a functioning microphone. This situation needs to be upgraded, and we’re certainly in the process of making that happen…one amazon purchase at a time. (Yeah, hey…take a look up there to the right of my head. See that “a” with a smile? That’s my amazon affiliate link. You can bookmark that, or just use it…and when you do amazon recognizes that we sent you and gives us a little monetary thank you.) We continue with a Manhattan incorporating Wigle straight rye, a fancy French vermouth I found at the store, a Luxardo maraschino cherry (…there’s an amazon affiliate link for you…), and lemon rind. We move through how Mark and I met, which leads us to a Sazerac incorporating Wigle “Absent Minded” (absinthe), Wigle straight rye, sage-infused simple syrup, Wigle aromatic bitters, and lemon rind. Now sufficiently buzzing, we reach the question at the foundation of our endeavor, “What drives you to drink, generally…and what drove you to drink, specifically, today?” Mark, ever the rule follower, noticed a “ROAD CLOSED” sign at the end of my street. (Water main leak/repair.) He parked in the Rite Aid lot and walked down…as cars, bicycles, motorcycles, and all forms of wheeled transportation ignored said sign and passed him on his ambulatory journey. Truth be told, I neglected to tell him about the sign to see what he would do…and I wasn’t disappointed. Listen here, and hear all about it. We present to you, “When is a closed road not closed? (Mark, pt. 1)” Oh…the music? Had to go full on a cappella…so, “If I ever fall in love” by Shai and, “Leave It” by Yes. Oh, and a Pandora 80’s station will be playing in the background, sometimes the foreground. Rest assured, I’m making no money off of “Easy Lover.” She’ll get a hold on you, believe it!
Here we are, well into 2016 and not nearly finished writing 2015 on checks and administrative forms. This lovely podcast occurred in the warm (quite warm), waning days of 2015…on an evening in which Greg decided to make cranberry juice and his unpredictable neurochemistry decided to toggle in the mildly bipolar manner that it often swings. This can be frustrating for Jen. However, when the toggle moves from draggy and depressed to frenetic and happy it’s ultimately amusing for Greg and anyone not living with him. Like you, dear listener. So have fun! Whilst Greg boils a pound of cranberries in a liter of water, in preparation for a New Year’s margarita variation involving cranberry-citrus juice/syrup, Wigle white rye, Solerno blood orange liquer, club soda, and bitters, your dynamic duo of drinking Del Ducas pair Brewery Ommegang Three Philosophers quadruple style ale with two cupcakes from Vanilla Pastry Studio in Regent Square. And wowee, wow-wow is that pairing wonderful! This fun continues for approximately 22 minutes, at which point your narrator, Greg, will return to guide you immediately back in for an 8-minutes-mini that includes the previously mentioned citrus-cranberry juice (…it turned out wonderfully, and quite concentrated…) and a late, late cocktail. The music included in this episode, in order, includes: “I can read your mind” by the wonderful and talented R.J. Heid. “The Cuppy Cake Song” by Amy Castle. (Original video here.) “Ice Cream Man” by Van Halen. We present to you, “Quadrupels, Cupcakes and Cranberry Juice.” (A few of my favorite things.)
Greg thought he’d purchased an 80 proof bottle of Wigle Wapsie Valley Bourbon. (Zagat likes it too!) He needed half of the bottle to figure out that he’d actually purchased the cask strength, which is 112.5 proof. Such things are par for this D2D course. Greg recently found wonderful cocktail vessels at Goodwill. Ninety-nine cents each. Beautifully etched stemware and perfectly rounded coupe glasses. Greg will forever sing the praises of Luxardo maraschino (“mah-duh-SKEE-noh”) cherries. What’s that all mean? It means a top shelf, mind-blowing, “this ain’t your old man’s” Old-Fashioned cocktail. Remember K.I.S.S.? Keep it simple, stupid: One Luxardo cherry and a barspoon of the syrup in the coupe glass. Whatever ends up in the spoon as you scoop the fruit. Then, a couple dashes of Peychaud’s bitters right on top. In a pint glass, stir the bourbon with ice then strain on top of the cherry/syrup/bitters. Cut a generous piece of orange rind, squeeze and twist the essense out of it…and drop it in the glass. Drink that. You get to the now booze-soaked cherry at the bottom. What to do now? Just wait a moment. Remember the movie, “Men in Black,” how the cat had an entire galaxy in a marble on its collar? “The galaxy’s on Orion’s belt.” Well, these Luxardo cherries are like the taste and oral-sensory version of that. Quite literally, they shut Jen up…mid-sentence even. She’ll be talking, then hit the bottom of the glass, and as soon as she pops that cherry (…yeah, I know…) it’s cognitive shut-down. So that’s the booze. How about the beer? Ballast Point “Sculpin.” This beer is consistently rated near 100% across all sites, and it’s expensive. Feeling the need to give this, “Best IPA in the universe” a try, we coughed up the cash. After having tried it, we feel that the rating comes from the brew being so accessible and non-offensive while still being moderately big at 7% abv. It’s like a very good “intermediate” level IPA. You start with Magic Hat #9 or Sierra Nevada, then you move to this. However, when we have IPAs at the D2D studios, we want to be assaulted with bit, complex aromas, flavors, and mouth feel…so this didn’t really do it for us. Ommegang “Lovely, Dark, and Deep.” Sounds dirty, huh? It’s delicious, and at 5.3% abv, you can actually drink this one for a while. (My problem, of course, came with…) Terrapin “Wake and Bake.” Wow. I mean, Wow! 9.4% abv. It’s an oatmeal, coffee stout that uses “Jittery Joe’s” coffee. All from Athens, Georgia. It’s like drinking the smoothest, most complex cold-brew coffee on the planet. And oh, it’ll fuck you up. Well, me. But you, too. It’s my…drum roll…favorite imperial “breakfast” stout as of right now. And the topics? We move through a Kindergarten level malt lesson We move through 14 beers you’re likely pronouncing wrong. (Thank you, Thrillist.) We talk about Wigle deep cut rye, Wigle “absent minded” absinthe, and the possibility of an all-local sazerac. Bing cherries are locally grown, so we could make bingaschino cherries and bingaschino liquer. And at the end of it all? A Sazerac’n’at! We Wrap it Up with the Fabulous Thunderbirds. And the music? At the beginning, “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer” by John Lee Hooker. At the end, “Drink You Away” by Justin Timberlake. Have fun! We present to you, “All That Glistens Is Not Booze.”

Ladies and gentlemen, boy and girls of all ages…on this episode, nay, on these episodes of the D2D Pod, Jen watches The Big Lebowski for the first time. In the first mini-episode, “Pre-Lebowski,” Greg makes modified caucasians for the lactose intolerant fancy-asses and discusses the pre-apocalyptic shopping frenzy at Giant Eagle. Jen makes paleo-friendly raspberry linzers with Wigle sassafras-enhanced whiskey (…and holy shit were they good…) and discusses movies that scare and disturb her. We end with the baby, the lawyer, and The Mist. We present to you, “Pre-Lebowski.”
If you’ve never tasted a Wigle Whiskey spirit you need to get on it! Can’t drive to the Strip District in Pittsburg to pick up a bottle? Well, Wigle has a CSA! Phoebe gets the scoop from Meredith Grelli, Wigle Wiskey co-owner (Phoebe likes to call her "owner" since she enjoys seeing young women in charge).

We walk the hackers walk this week and show you how to accumulate your own database of Wireless access points in your area using nothing more but your smartphone. And if that is not enough we take it a step further and teach you how to find an open wifi hotspot anywhere on the planet. … Continue reading "kw609 : The wonders of wardriving with Wigle."
The widespread adoption of home routers by the general public has added a new target for malware and crimeware authors. A router's ability to manipulate essentially all network traffic coming in to and out of a home, means that malware installed on these devices has the ability to launch powerful Man-In-The-Middle (MITM) attacks, a form of attack that has previously been largely ignored. Making matters worse, many homes have deployed wireless routers which are insecure if the attacker has geographic proximity to the router and can connect to it over its wireless channel. However, some have downplayed this risk by suggesting that attackers will be unwilling to spend the time and resources necessary, nor risk exposure to attack a large number of routers in this fashion. In this talk, we will consider the ability of malware to propagate from wireless router to wireless router over the wireless channel, infecting large urban areas where such routers are deployed relatively densely. We develop an SIR epidemiological model, and use it to simulate the spread of malware over major metropolitan centers in the US. Using hobbyist collected wardriving data from Wigle.net and our model, we show the potential for the infection of tens of thousands of routers in short periods of time is quite feasible. We consider simple prescriptive suggestions to minimize the likelihood that such attacks are ever performed. Next, we show a simple yet worrisome attacks that can easily and silently be performed from infected routers. We call this attack 'Trawler Phishing'. The attack generalizes a well understood failure of many web-sites to properly implement SSL, and allows attackers to harvest credentials from victims over a period of time, without the need to use spamming techniques or mimicked, but illegitimate web-sites, as in traditional phishing attacks, bypassing the most effective phishing prevention technologies. Further, it allows attackers to easily form data-portfolios on many victims, making collected data substantially more valuable. We consider prescriptive suggestions and countermeasure for this attack. The work on epidemiological modeling is joint work with Hao Hu, Vittoria Colizza and Alex Vespignani. The work on trawler phishing is joint work Sid Stamm. About the speaker: Steven Myers is an Assistant Professor in the School of Informatics at Indiana University, where he is also a member of the Center for Applied Cybersecurity. His research interests are in all areas of cryptography, and computer and systems security with a specific interest in phishing. He has written several papers, led panels, and given invited talks in fields ranging from Cryptography and Computer Security to Distributed Systems and Probabilistic Combinatorics. Recently he co-edited the book 'Phishing & Countermeasures: Understanding the Increasing Problem of Electronic Identity Theft' with Markus Jakobsson (Wiley Press, 2007).Steve Myers completed his PhD (2005) in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Toronto, under the supervision of Professor Charles Rackoff. While completing his PhD he interned in the Mathematical Research division of Telcordia Technologies (formerly Belcore) doing work on secure cryptographic voting. Additionally, he worked for Echoworx Corp, an Internet startup focusing on providing usable and secure email solutions. He has consulted for a number companies and law firms on different topics related to cryptography and computer security, and is currently processing several patents related to his research.
