Both Miroki and Andre are lovers of whisk(e)y, but how much do they know, outside of the fact that Scotch spells it “whisky”? Miroki had a chance to attend a UK tasting that featured drams from Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England. Plus, she catches up with Foxes Bow co-founder, Tony Foote, to talk about how they are reinventing the image of Irish whiskey, and Jamie Johnson, Ambassador for Glenfiddich and Balvenie, to discuss why Scotch is such a household name globally and why women are STILL dealing with gatekeeping in the whisk(e)y world? You can follow Miroki on Instagram @9ouncespleaseYou can follow André on Instagram @andrewinereview Hosted on Acast. As the spirits industry navigates shifting consumer trends and evolving market landscapes, staying agile has become essential for growth, even for a company that is 137 years old. I sat down with Paul Basford, President of William Grant & Sons USA, to discuss how this family-owned, independent company famous for brands such as Glenfiddich, The Balvenie, Hendrick's Gin, and Milagro Tequila has adapted to change. In our discussion, Basford talks about their data-driven approach to regional shifts, the company's commitment to core brands, and strategies for cultivating a strong, future-focused team culture.
A recent study by CGA by NIQ reveals that South Africans enjoy dining out, with 87% of those surveyed visiting bars or restaurants at least once a month. The study also highlights a growing preference for cocktails, with 60% of drinkers choosing them, and an increasing demand for premium beverages. Lifa Bakana, the senior brand manager of William Grant & Sons, says South Africans have developed a taste for premium brands like their Glenfiddich single malt whiskey. These customers, referred to as the “greatest showman” or “greatest show woman,” are the target market for Glenfiddich, according to Bakana. It is typically a 35-year-old and older consumer who enjoys premium whiskey. To tap into this market, Glenfiddich has released its 31-year-old Grand Chateau in South Africa, which has been aged in Bordeaux red wine casks. There are only 474 bottles available priced at R40,000 and Bakana says they are selling fast if you want to get your hands on something rare.

Zak Kemble and Gavin Linde, both whiskey enthusiasts, recently discussed their shared passion. Zak recounted his initial negative experience with whiskey and his subsequent journey exploring different varieties. Both agreed on Glenfarclas 15 as a favorite, appreciating its balance of accessibility and flavor, while Gavin also highlighted Glenfiddich for its consistent quality and affordability. Their conversation touched on the unpredictable nature of aging whiskey and the risks involved, drawing parallels with the evolving video game and car industries. Zak, who delved into whiskey around 2015 after retiring from semi-professional athletics, entered the scene just before its surge in popularity. They acknowledged the challenges faced by the whiskey industry, particularly the impact of Covid-19, which led to initial growth followed by a downturn. Zak emphasized the issue of rising prices potentially alienating consumers, stressing the need for a balanced value proposition across different consumer segments. Gavin suggested the shift towards tequilas and rums could be a response to these challenges. The rising prices in the whiskey market, despite no apparent cost increases, were also discussed. They explored the practice of 'whiskey fixing,' where whiskeys are further aged to modify flavor profiles and create limited editions. Gavin shared his experience collecting rare, expensive bottles as potential investments. The investment potential of Scotch whiskey was a key topic, with its rapid growth surpassing other investments like real estate and premium wines. They also touched on limited production and the practice of 'flipping' whiskey for resale rather than consumption. The increasing prices of whiskey, particularly the McAllen edition, were analyzed. Gavin recounted buying the McAllen edition for $89-$95 and witnessing its value soar to $3,000 before dropping to $1,200. Zak highlighted the disparity between the rate of price increases and consumer affordability, particularly when collecting overshadows consumption. The challenges of serving high-end whiskey in bars were also explored, focusing on oxidation and the difficulty of maintaining optimal storage conditions. They emphasized the importance of proper handling to preserve quality and the challenges faced by bartenders in ensuring this. Zak and Gavin shared career highlights, with Zak recounting his visit to the Blair Athol distillery in Scotland, emphasizing its historical significance. They also discussed their whiskey tasting experiences, including a 52-year-old Macallan from 1969 for Zak and a 71-year-old Glenlivet for Gavin, both exceeding expectations despite preconceptions about older whiskeys. The conversation concluded with reflections on the subjective nature of whiskey preferences, the importance of quality control, and the joy of sharing high-quality whiskey with others. They criticized brands prioritizing reputation over quality and emphasized the value of shared experiences over material possessions.

Like an old 80s sitcom, this episode was taped before a live audience of about 90 regular listeners who carried on a vigorous commentary and questions in the Zoom chat, and we had a special guest at the very end—John Hinderaker in the (virtual) flesh! And since we actually recorded during happy hour for a change (and not Saturday morning as has been the case for the last several weeks), we rolled out several whisky choices for the episode.Listeners may know that Lucretia, this week's host, has been partial in the past to Glenmorangie, which the great Kingsley Amis noted "has been called delicate and mild, even faintly sweet." This is not a description anyone would ever use about Lucretia, making this a dubious match. Tonight she had two varieties of Glenfiddich on hand, which Amis called "fruity and well balanced." Maybe she's better matched with Macallan, which Amis says is "powerful yet smooth." That sounds more like it!By popular demand, we took up a news items we didn't get to last week in the crush of shocking news stories, namely Judge Aileen Cannon's ruling that special counsel Jack Smith's appointment as special counsel to torment Trump is unconstitutional. Steve invented a special judicial scale—the Silberman Scale from 1 - 10—for John Yoo to grade the opinion, and he gave it a solid 8, which is pretty darn good. From there—oh my! Lucretia unveiled her handcrafted tin foil cowboy hat, as we kicked around whether the loss of trust in key government institutions (cough, cough—FBI—cough, cough, or cough—Secret Service—cough) is because they are merely incompetent and negligent, or whether their carelessness is deliberate. From there John Hinderaker gave us an update on the FBI investigation of the firebombing of his office building back in January, and finally we all gave our predictions for Kamala Harris's running mate, but not until we rolled out the first of whiat is doubtless to be many weeks of ritual denunciation of Harris. So if you missed the live taping, pour yourself a nice, dry single malt and settle in.
Monkey Shoulder is one of the best values in scotch because it's essentially Glenfiddich, Balvenie, and Kininvie blended together. Three fantastic single malts. No grain whiskey anywhere and at around $30 bucks, the low-key malty goodness and the fresh malt fruit note contribute to a huge value proposition on both the low end and high end of the category.
Join us as we chat with Struan Ralph, aka "The Whisky Beard," from the William Grant family. We dive into Struan's early whiskey memories, the transformative journey of single malt whiskies, and their rise in global markets. Listen in for anecdotes from New York's social scene, industry insights, and discussions on whisky trends, finishes, and pricing. Discover how the whisky industry is evolving and what makes these spirits so special. Tune in for a captivating conversation about the world of whisky and its enduring allure.
Get ready to continue the whiskey journey with a twist on part 2 of the Scotch episode of A Steady Pour Podcast! Join Drew, Calvin, Tony, and Darius as they finally dive into the world of Scotch whiskey with the expert guidance of Will from Whiskey Chronicles. Despite their show's long-standing promise to review Scotch, the hosts are just now venturing into this classic spirit, starting with a Dewar's 18-year-old Scotch. Will, a certified bourbon steward, shares his passion and deep knowledge, making this tasting session both educational and entertaining. With laughter and lively banter, the hosts share their initial impressions of the Dewar's, noting its sweet vanilla, honey, and surprising hints of smoke and sea salt. As the conversation flows, Will provides valuable context on blended versus single malt Scotch, and the unique characteristics of various Scotch-producing regions. In the second part, we delve into the nuances of Glenfiddich's single malt, comparing its flavors and aromas to other well-known brands, and sharing personal preferences like a love for sherry-finished scotches. In the final segment, we explore the world of American single malts, contrasting their youthful vigor with the seasoned complexity of Scotch. Our guest highlights promising brands like Westward and Westland, and we discuss their innovative approaches. With anecdotes about specific whiskies and reflections on our diverse experiences, this episode offers a rich exploration of whisky's evolving world. Whether you're a seasoned whiskey lover or a curious newcomer, tune in for an insightful, entertaining, and palate-pleasing adventure through the world of whiskey!
James Hayhurst is former MD of Leagas Delaney, Global Brand Equity Director for OMO/Persil at Unilever and the Founder of the Magic Sauce Course. In this episode we discuss: What makes great creative Why the agency / client relationship break down The importance of talking to your customers The Parents Promise LondonSEOXL - use code Andi20 to get 20% off a ticket How Brands Grow by Bryon Sharp James started his career agency-side BMP DDB (now Adam&Eve DDB) as a grad trainee. During his time there he worked on award-winning campaigns for Volkswagen, Channel 4 and the Teacher Training Agency amongst many other UK and international clients. In 2012 James joined Leagas Delaney as Managing Director running the London office, and managing brands including Glenfiddich, Patek Philippe and Timberland. James decided to try his hand at client-side marketing by joining Unilever in October 2014 as the Global Brand Equity director for OMO/Persil, Unilever's third biggest brand and sold in 80 countries globally. James was attracted by the brand positioning of Dirt is Good and Unilever's commitment to sustainable living and during his four years James helped position the brand as one of Unilever's fastest growing purposeful brands. Whilst there James was struck by what he 'didn't know he didn't know' when he'd been an agency MD about client culture and decision making. He also began to appreciate how alien agency culture appeared to many clients, and that they hadn't been given the instruction manual of how to 'operate' their agencies. There was an empathy gap on both sides that needed bridging. The Magic Sauce Programme was the result. The Magic Sauce programme helps clients and agencies to work more effectively, efficiently, enjoyably and profitably together. It does this by improving the understanding and importance of relationship dynamics, communication and wider team chemistry. It also offers a behaviour change and measurement framework to improve relationship quality over time. Satya Sharma is the new CEO of Australia's pioneering whisky company, Lark Distilling. Sash – as he prefers to be called – has only been on deck since May 2023. But already, he has put his stamp on the Lark business. The frenzy of special releases has been dialled back in favour of a clearly defined core range. Export deals have been announced for several markets in South East Asia. 700ml bottles are on the cards, and as you just heard, the business has committed to greater transparency about the provenance of whiskies that carry the Lark name. Sash joined Lark following ten years with William Grant & Sons, most recently in Singapore, where he played an integral role establishing export markets for its iconic brands including Glenfiddich and The Balvenie. We'll explore that career background and Sash's vision for Lark coming up in this extended interview that gets the Drinks Adventures podcast underway for 2024. If you haven't already, make sure you listen to the special episode I did for the 30th anniversary of Lark Distillery in 2022. I've linked to it from the show notes. First up this episode, I asked Bill Lark his thoughts on the new leadership, which signals the beginnings of another chapter for the business he founded back in 1992.

Today, we have a special treat for you as we dive into the world of Tartan House, a whiskey lover's paradise located in Louisville, Kentucky. We had the pleasure of speaking with Jeff Knott, the owner and operator of Tartan House, and this man knows his whiskey. From his early days sipping Scotch with his roommate to his time at Willett Distillery, Jeff's journey in the world of whiskey has been nothing short of remarkable. Jeff's love affair with whiskey began in his early years when he started drinking Scotch with his roommate. He fondly remembers their go-to bottle, Glenfiddich, and how it helped shape his taste for whiskey. But it wasn't until later, when he entered the bar scene, that his passion for whiskey truly took off.
Frizz and Bob crack open the classic, 12-Year Glenfiddich single malt scotch and spin the monumental Talking Heads album, Speaking in Tongues, on its 40th anniversary. We highlight the love between a man and a lamp, invent new languages, chat butthole opinions, and revel in the mad genius of David Byrne and Tom Jones.

Bob and Brad are joined by author and critic Ethan Warren for a deep dive into the emotional waters of William Wyler's 1946 post-war drama, The Best Years of Our Lives. As they dissect this Oscar-winning film from the Hollywood Golden Age, the conversation also tips into the world of whiskey, with a tasting session of the smoky Glenfiddich Fire and Cane. Welcome to Episode 1538, What is wine communication in 2022? with Robert Joseph, moderated by Stevie Kim This is the wine2wine Business Forum 2022 Series. The sessions are recorded and uploaded on Italian Wine Podcast. wine2wine Business Forum is an international wine business forum, held annually in Verona Italy since 2014. The event is a key reference point for wine producers and a diverse variety of wine professionals eager to develop and grow their wine business worldwide. About today' session: In 2002, like wine producers, book publishers and authors largely relied heavily on traditional critics and reviewers. Today, they also have TikTok, Instagram and peer reviews on Goodreads and Amazon. The #Booktok tag has been used over 39,000,000,000 times. TikTok influencers are now becoming more important to book publishing than most classic reviewers. Barnes & Nobles shops in the US now have BookTok shelves. Top Instagram book influencers, @everlastingcharm, @myfriendsarefiction and @hayaisreading all have over 100,000 followers, far more potential book buyers than are ever likely to read a traditional newspaper review. Wine in China has adopted this shift more rapidly than in the west. Wang Shenghan, aka Lady Penguin, a 33-year-old leading wine influencer, has built an e-commerce platform with revenues of over $35m. But it is not just influencers. A Vivino marketing campaign can be more cost effective today than promoting a Wine Spectator score. Many in the industry are uncomfortable with these trends, but ignoring them may be a mistake. Former award-winning author and critic and now industry analyst, Robert Joseph, takes a level-headed look at the rapid way wine communication is changing, reveals the findings from new research, and ways many producers may need to adapt. More about today's speaker: Robert Joseph Robert is a wine business consultant and an editorial consultant for Meininger's Wine Business International, which he helped to launch in 2006. In 1983, after living in Burgundy for five years, he launched Wine International magazine; set up the International Wine Challenge; became wine writer for the Sunday Telegraph and wrote The Wine Lists, the first of his 25 books. He has chaired and launched over 50 wine competitions in Asia, Europe and the UK. Robert has been in Who's Who since 2013, and awards he has received include the Jacob's Creek ‘Golden Vine'; ‘the Best Wine Guide in the World'; the Glenfiddich (twice); The Wine Guild of the United Kingdom Premier; the Marques de Caceres. He regularly appears on television and radio, and has lectured at the Wine & Spirits Educational Trust, Burgundy and Sonoma Wine Business Schools. Joseph is one of the trio behind Hugh Kevin & Robert Wines whose le Grand Noir range now sell over 3.8m bottles per year in over 60 countries. College football is back! We take a look at the opening weekend of games and discuss the early polls. The usual suspects are in the top 5 but will those teams be there in the end? And what did the polls get wrong. Matt and Hank take an early look at the season. Then at 24:00 we sit down with David Allardice at Tales of the Cocktail. Really fun chat with him about Glenfiddich and the latest they have going on. We could have talked for a while he is so much fun so we will be trying to catch up with him down the road. As always thanks for taking the time to listen, and if you're looking for a great scotch check out Glenfiddich! We always highly recommend their expressions.
