Crime Time Inc

This episode of Crime time Inc. delves deep into the life and legacy of Ned Kelly, Australia's most notorious outlaw. With Simon in Australia, the hosts explore iconic true crime cases, starting with Kelly, a figure who embodies both rebellion and controversy. Born in 1854 in rural Victoria, Ned Kelly's life was marked by poverty, social strife, and an early brush with the law. His transformation from a troubled youth to a feared bushranger began after a pivotal encounter with the police known as the Fitzpatrick Incident. Following this, Kelly formed the Kelly Gang with his brother Dan and associates Joe Byrne and Steve Hart, launching a series of daring raids that cemented their infamy. The episode discusses significant events in Kelly's life, including the Stringybark Creek ambush and the legendary bank robberies that showcased the gang's reckless audacity. The hosts also examine the complex aspects of Kelly's character, from his altruistic acts like saving a boy from drowning to his fierce resistance against what he saw as systemic injustices. They highlight Kelly's manifesto, the 'Jerilderie Letter,' where he articulates his grievances against the authorities. The story builds to Kelly's final stand at Glenrowan, a dramatic siege that ended with Kelly's capture and the deaths of his gang members. Despite his execution, Kelly's legend continued to grow, symbolizing the struggle against oppression and the fight for justice. The episode concludes by reflecting on the enduring fascination with Ned Kelly, whose remains were only identified through DNA testing in 2011, underscoring the lasting impact of his story on Australian cultural identity.00:00 Introduction to Australian True Crime00:07 Ned Kelly: The Outlaw Icon01:10 Early Life and Family Struggles02:28 First Brush with the Law03:31 The Fitzpatrick Incident04:47 Formation of the Kelly Gang05:07 Stringybark Creek Ambush06:00 The Kelly Gang's Daring Raids08:34 The Glenrowan Siege10:52 Ned Kelly's Capture and Trial11:52 Legacy and Enduring Fascination Hosted on Acast. The complete audiobook is available for purchase here: https://bit.ly/3v9F7GB The Jerilderie Letter By Ned Kelly Narrated by Denis Daly Edward "Ned" Kelly (1854 - 1880) was the last and most celebrated Australian bushranger (outlaw). After being implicated in the shooting of three policemen at Stringybark Creek in October, 1878, Kelly and his gang were declared by the Victorian government to be outlaws, and were the subjects of an extensive man hunt over the next two years. In February, 1879, the Kelly gang staged a daring and highly organized raid on the Bank of New South Wales in the town of Jerilderie. During the occupation of the town Kelly dictated a letter to fellow gang member Joe Byrne, which he wished the editor of the Jerilderie & Urana Gazette to publish. Unable to locate the editor of the paper, Kelly gave the letter to Edwin Living, the accountant of the bank, with a demand that it be printed. However, the letter was not actually published until 1930. In the letter the outlaw gives a detailed explanation of his various grievances and, in particular, attempts to justify his actions at Stringybark Creek. Kelly was captured after an epic shootout at the Glenrowan Hotel in June 1880, and was executed by hanging in Melbourne on 11th November.

Part one of our Ned Kelly series ended up with the gang's shootout at Stringybark Creek which was a depressing, murderous affair. You might think that their story just goes even further into the darkness from there, but what followed that shootout were some really good times. In this episode, Greg and Chris tell you all about the gang robbing banks, throwing parties, and becoming endeared to the hearts and the minds of the common man. Don't worry though because it gets plenty dark towards the end and sets you up perfectly for the exciting conclusion in part 3. Grab a drink, gather the family around the fire, and enjoy this episode of HPH titled Ned Kelly part 2: I Shot the Sherritt. (Note: please do not gather the family around the fire for this episode. I really loved having these guys on and these are definitely two lads who will go on to great things.

The story of Ned Kelly is Australia’s most heralded myth. Black Snake, an explosive new book, tells the victim’s side of the story for the first time. Written by the great-grandson of one of the policemen murdered at Stringybark Creek, Black Snake is the most compelling rebuttal of the Ned Kelly myth ever told. The book has been published to coincide with the 140th anniversary of the Stringybark Creek killings. The story of Ned Kelly is also the untold story of Michael Kennedy, the police sergeant slain and robbed by the outlaw 140 years ago. Both Kennedy and Kelly were Irish immigrants struggling to make their way in the new colonies of Australia – Kennedy was committed to defending the law, while Kelly was hell-bent on breaking it. When their paths crossed one fateful day at Stringybark Creek, it triggered the end for one and the beginning of an incredible myth about the other.Author Leo Kennedy is the great-grandson of Sergeant Michael Kennedy. He was raised in the shadow of his great-grandfather’s murder. He witnessed the deep psychological wounds inflicted on successive generations of his family – and the families of other victims – as the Ned Kelly myth grew around them and the sacrifice of their loved ones was forgotten. Now, for the first time, these historical episodes have been brought to life. Instead of celebrating a heroic man of the people, Black Snake challenges the Ned Kelly legend, giving voice to the victims of a merciless gang of outlaws. It is a captivating true story, gleaned from meticulous research and family history, of two men from similar backgrounds whose legacies were distorted by history. The repercussions of their encounter reverberated through generations.------Landry.audio is a podcast speaking with some of the world's most interesting personalities. Welcome to Ned Kelly Part Two!We left our heroes (?) in Stringybark Creek, just after murdering a small handful of policeman. Ned’s fame would absolutely skyrocket from this act, and then, as now, public opinion was divided – did Ned act in self-defence? Or was he nothing more than a cold-blooded murderer? With the gang now outlawed, they were forced to spend most of their time isolated in the Victorian bush, relying on a network of supporters to get by. Hundreds of police were out scouring the countryside for the Kellys. As time wore on the police grew more and more desperate, and decided to make the very act of being a known associate of the Kelly gang a crime. With their mates locked up, the gang wanted to help them out, but even in the 1800s legal fees were expensive. What are four blokes to do but start robbing banks? How different could it really be from horse stealing, anyway? In this episode, we cover Ned’s life after the murders to the end of his short but infamous life. This is all the good shit – the bank robberies, the boozing, the general larrikinism. If you’re not a fan of Ned by the end of this episode, maybe you’ll at least admire his pizazz.EPISODE NOTES:After the murders at Stringybark Creek, Ned and co set off to rob some banks, cause some mischief, and just generally act the way folk heroes do. Bank robberies in Euroa and Jerilderie became the stuff of legend, not just for the boldness of the crimes, but for the way their hostages were treated – more often than not, they were thanked for their trouble with a few beers and a slice of the profits. Ned and the gang gained a reputation for being courteous, friendly, and honourable even while they were committing crimes – but they’d still shoot anyone who betrayed them. The fun couldn’t last forever, though. Still fuming with rage over the wrongful imprisonment of his mother and wanting to make a statement the police couldn’t ignore, Ned and the gang schemed to blow up a train full of police officers en route from Benalla. Things didn’t go according to plan, and the gang ended up in a days-long siege with police at Glenrowan, from which none of them, in one way or another, would survive. Please read Peter Fitzsimmon’s Ned Kelly. Nolan is one of Australia's most respected and internationally celebrated painters having travelled and exhibited extensively throughout the world during his long career. Largely self-taught by way of repeated visits to the State Library and Gino Nibbi's legendary book store in Melbourne, Nolan discovered the art of Miró, Klee and Picasso and immersed himself in the writings of Blake, Rimbaud, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard and DH Lawrence. Ned Kelly was an Australian folk hero many decades before Nolan took up his cause. Nolan's fascination with Kelly developed from stories told by his grandfather, a trooper who had hunted down the fugitive bushranger in 1880. 'The camp' is one of the original, seminal series of works depicting the life and deeds of this antipodean bandit, which Nolan painted at Sunday and John Reed's house 'Heide', in 1946-47. 'The camp' refers to the moment in the story of Kelly's exploits, just before his gang's ambush at Stringybark Creek in rural Victoria, where three policemen sent to apprehend the outlaws were killed. The bold division of the painting into two halves creates a powerful psychological tension: the calm landscape to the right is juxtaposed against an electric-blue area of paint, from which emerges the square, black, silhouetted figure of Kelly, wearing his beaten-iron armour and helmet.
