Das macht einen riesengroßen Unterschied aus. Weißt du, dass wir Menschen immer wieder das Gleiche machen? Kennst du das? Wir essen immer wieder das Gleiche, wir gehen immer wieder in die gleichen Lokale, wir treffen uns immer wieder mit den gleichen Leuten, wir gehen immer an die gleichen Orte in Urlaub. Alles ist immer gleich. Wir sitzen immer am gleichen Ort beim Essen. Alles ist geregelt, alles ist immer gleich. Weißt du, wie langweilig das ist? Weißt du, wie du da in die Routine reinkommst? Die Challenge ist, immer wieder da rauszugehen. Die Challenge ist, immer wieder in die Veränderung zu gehen, immer wieder zu wechseln. Gehe an neue Orte, besuche neue Lokale, iss andere Sachen. Mach dich auf den Weg, sei experimentierfreudig. Das ist so toll, das ist so schön. Das macht was mit dir, es gibt dir bessere Gefühle, weil du sonst in den Trott reinkommst. Jahrzehntelang der gleichen Arbeit nachzugehen, mein Gott, weißt du, wie das abstumpft? Weißt du, wie das fertig macht? Dann nach Hause kommen, immer das gleiche Essen und dann Filzpantoffeln, Flasche Bier, Fernseher, die drei berühmten Fs, jeden Abend das Gleiche und jedes Wochenende immer wieder dasselbe. Ändere es. Nimm eine Bucketliste oder eine Löffelliste. Schreib mal auf: Was wolltest du schon lange machen? Auch kleine Dinge. Und dann mach es. Geh es an, geh in die Veränderung. Das macht so viel, weil du sonst eingefahren bist. Und wenn du eingefahren bist, dann wirst du irgendwann alt. Du bist nicht mehr flexibel, du bist nicht mehr belastbar. Du bist es einfach nicht mehr. Schau mal, Donnerstag war ich in Frankfurt beim Matchforum. Weißt du was? Ich stehe auf, es schneit. Eigentlich hatte ich keinen Bock, da hinzugehen. Ich habe zu mir gesagt: Weißt du was, mach einen gemütlichen Tag im Büro. Sag einfach ab. Und ich bin froh, dass ich es nicht gemacht habe. Ich bin froh, dass ich mich aufgerafft habe. Da komme ich in das Hotel. Neues Hotel. Neue Leute, bis auf ein paar, die ich kannte. Alles neu. Auf der Bühne. Alles neu. Kennst du das? Ich habe einen Preis dafür bezahlt, dass ich nicht zu Hause gemütlich im Büro war. Aber das, was ich gewonnen habe, war ein Vielfaches höher. Was habe ich gewonnen? Ich habe jede Menge neue Leute kennengelernt. Fantastische Leute. Ich habe alte Bekannte wiedergesehen. Ich durfte sie in meine TV-Erfolgssendung einladen. Ich durfte sie auf meine Seminare einladen. Ich durfte über mein ÄHM-Seminar in St. Moritz sprechen. Ich habe Anmeldungen darüber bekommen. Und durch meinen Freund Ronny Barthel, der dort war, es gibt ja keine Zufälle, habe ich fantastische, großartige Fotos erhalten. Supergeil genetzwerkt. Merkst du was? Wenn du rausgehst, wenn du in die Welt hinausgehst, hast du so eine geile Experience. Du lernst neue Leute, neue Dinge, neue Situationen kennen. Das sind die Dinge, die dich weiterbringen. Denk mal darüber nach: Wie oft machst du etwas Neues? Wie oft liest du mal was anderes? Geh mal auf andere Seminare. Geh auf Schulungen. Lies mal was anderes. Nicht immer das Gleiche. Das ist ein riesengroßer Unterschied. Und so bleibst du flexibel. So bleibst du jung. Wenn ich viele in meinem Alter anschaue, bei denen ist das Leben schon gelaufen. Was kommt heute Abend im Fernsehen? Wie ist das Wetter? Weißt du was? Mir ist das sowas von scheißegal, wie das Wetter ist. Ja, es ist grau in grau. Eigentlich ist das Wetter bescheuert. Und? Ich kann nicht das Wetter ändern, aber ich kann meine Einstellung ändern. Du bist herzlich eingeladen. Komm nach Bad Dürkheim. Komm zu den Seminaren: Selbstständigkeit, Unternehmertum, neue Wege, Geld zu verdienen. Hör auf zu jammern. Es gibt so viele geile Wege, Geld zu verdienen. Geh in die Selbstständigkeit. Eran tres faltas en la materia todos los viernes por la noche. Ya les había explicado la razón a los profesores, menos al de Portugués. Al mismo tiempo procuraba hacer los trabajos con dedicación y estudiaba mucho, aun cuando estaba casada, tenía una hija y enseñaba..Entonces, le expliqué al profesor de Portugués que guardaba el sábado desde la puesta de sol del viernes. Le entregué la declaración y le aseguré que estaba dispuesta a hacer todos los trabajos que me pidiera para compensar las faltas. Mirándome con desdén, dijo: "¡¿Cómo una joven inteligente aún cree en cuentos de hadas?! Pídele a tu pastor que te libere. Conmigo no tienes chance". Respiré e insistí: "Profesor, es un acuerdo entre Dios y yo. Es mi fidelidad a ese acuerdo". "¿Y vas a reprobar por eso?", preguntó él. "Estoy en sus manos, profesor. Yo respeto y me someto a su buen criterio. Si tengo que reprobar, reprobaré", respondí.El tiempo pasó. Oré mucho y, al finalizar el primer bimestre, tenía muchas faltas y tenía un siete como nota: resultado frustrante para mis exigencias. No me había ido tan mal porque había tres pruebas los viernes, que valían un punto cada una, y otra en la mitad de la semana que valía siete.Volví a hablar con el profesor y le dije: "Profesor, al menos no ponga pruebas los viernes". Él se rio irónicamente.Seguí orando. Un viernes por la noche en el que había prueba agendada, hubo una huelga del servicio de colectivos. La prueba fue marcada para otro día y dije en son de broma: "Profesor, no marque prueba el viernes. Habrá imprevistos".Yo estaba orando por esas providencias. Sorprendentemente, otro viernes, hubo un partido importante de fútbol, y muchos alumnos faltaron. En la tercera providencia, un jueves sería feriado y la facultad resolvió que tampoco daría clases ese viernes. Las pruebas nuevamente fueron agendadas para otra fecha.Las notas mejoraron y me puse feliz. Tampoco fui desaprobada por faltas por otra providencia.Dios honra a los que lo honran. En la graduación, fui sorprendida al recibir homenajes y abrazos, inclusive del profesor de Portugués, como una de las mejores alumnas del curso.¿Enfrentas desafíos para guardar el sábado? No negocies tu fidelidad a Dios por ninguna ventaja. Confía en las providencias divinas. Tu obediencial y confianza serán recompensadas. 

Ja, Wahnsinn. Du hast gesagt, es ist nicht nur positiv, sondern auch negativ. Was siehst du da negativ? Weil alle nur sagen: Geil, geil. Und ich finde, mittlerweile ist fast jeder ein KI-Experte oder KI-Coach. Das ist total albern, weil viele auf einer Technologie sitzen, die alle haben. Das Problem ist: Sie verlassen sich blind darauf. Wenn ich heute manche Ideenvorschläge oder diese typische LinkedIn-Kultur sehe, weiß ich sofort: Das stammt nicht mehr aus eigener Feder. Man darf nicht vergessen: Die Datensätze sind teilweise alt, nicht aktuell, und wenn man nicht sauber promptet, kommt schnell Schwachsinn heraus. Weil man so viel Verantwortung abgibt, prüft man oft gar nicht mehr, ob das, was man rauslässt, überhaupt stimmt. Genau da entsteht die Gefahr, dass man ungefiltert Falschinformationen verbreitet. Dazu kommt die politische und mediale Stimmungsmache. Früher dachte man: Wenn es von der DPA oder der Tagesschau kommt, wird es schon einigermaßen stimmen. Heute werden Meldungen in sozialen Medien einfach übernommen. Das Erstarken extremer Parteien hängt klar mit Social Media zusammen. Manipulation der Massen ist heute viel einfacher als noch vor fünf Jahren. Du hast Büros in Polen, Tschechien, der Slowakei, Spanien, Rumänien und Ungarn. Wie läuft deine Arbeit ab? Wir haben Kunden aus Handwerk und Industrie, die Bedarfe anmelden. Dann strecken wir europaweit unsere Fühler aus, akquirieren passende Leute, bringen beide Seiten in einen Call und begleiten alles vollständig. Über Arbeitnehmerüberlassung ist der Mitarbeiter zunächst ein Jahr lang bei mir angestellt. So können beide Seiten testen: Passt die Chemie? Passt der Arbeitsplatz? Danach wird der Mitarbeiter oft übernommen. Für beide Seiten ist das eine gute Testphase. Ich frage bei Vorträgen oft: Was ist der erste Brief, den ein ausländischer Facharbeiter in Deutschland bekommt? Viele tippen auf einen Willkommensbrief. Nein, es ist die Rechnung zur Rundfunkgebühr. Das ist zwar lustig, zeigt aber auch, wie hinten dran wir sind. Aus der Praxis kann ich sagen: Jeder dritte Facharbeiter, der etwas kann, sagt Deutschland ab, wenn er auch ein Angebot aus Skandinavien, den Niederlanden oder der Schweiz hat. Wir sind abgesunken. Wir müssen unsere Hausaufgaben machen. Warum ist Skandinavien so attraktiv? Weniger Belastung, oft Englisch als Arbeitssprache und besseres Onboarding. Man stellt sich dort stärker auf die Menschen ein, die neu ins Land kommen. Ich liebe Deutschland, aber bei Infrastruktur, Hilfe und Begleitung sind andere Länder oft weiter. Dann kommt die Bürokratie dazu. Ein Kunde sucht dringend einen Lkw-Fahrer, der seit 30 Jahren fährt und trotzdem muss er nochmal den ganzen Apparat durchlaufen. Was soll das? Es wird einem die unternehmerische Freiheit geklaut. Besonders schlimm ist es bei Drittstaaten. Wenn du als Unternehmer jemanden einstellen willst, den du im Ausland kennengelernt hast, dann kannst du das eben nicht einfach tun. Obwohl er Sozialabgaben zahlt, Steuern zahlt und gebraucht wird, musst du dich durch das Fachkräfteeinwanderungsgesetz kämpfen. Ein bürokratisches Monster. Muss es wirklich den Staat etwas angehen, ob jemand perfekt Deutsch spricht, wenn der Unternehmer ihn einstellen will und für alles aufkommt? Diese Bürokratie lähmt uns. Der Staat ist für mich der größte Arbeitsverhinderer überhaupt und gleichzeitig der größte Arbeitgeber im Land. Genau daraus entstehen dann Zustände, in denen du für einen Bauantrag zwei Jahre wartest, weil der zuständige Sachbearbeiter ausfällt und niemand übernimmt. Digitalisierung findet nicht statt. Gleichzeitig ist es oft einfacher, in Deutschland ins Sozialsystem zu kommen, als in den Arbeitsmarkt. Das ist doch das Problem. Es kippt gerade, weil notwendige Investitionen ausbleiben und das Sozialsystem immer mehr Mittel frisst. Dabei geht es nicht darum, Menschen etwas wegzunehmen. Asyl ist Recht auf Zeit, und wir sind ein humanes Land. Aber wir brauchen auch Vernunft und Fairness. Die Menschen, die hier arbeiten, Steuern zahlen und etwas aufbauen wollen, müssen wir mit Handkuss halten. Genau solche Menschen brauchen wir. Mir geht es um den gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalt. Der bröckelt, wenn es keine Fairness mehr gibt. Wenn jemand sein Leben lang arbeitet und kaum von der Rente leben kann, während andere Leistungen beziehen, ohne je eingezahlt zu haben, dann sorgt das für Unfrieden. Und trotzdem gilt: Wir brauchen eine Willkommenskultur für gute, motivierte Menschen aus dem Ausland, Menschen, die hier arbeiten, mitgestalten und Verantwortung übernehmen. Darauf steht: 40 Tage Fastenzeit – nicht jammern – nicht meckern – nicht kritisieren – nicht ablehnen – nicht verletzen – nicht lästern - nicht verurteilen – DENK MAL POSITIV. Ich hatte das irgendwo abgeschrieben, weil es mir sehr zugesagt hat. Und jetzt fällt mir ein: ein Viertel der Zeit ist schon vorbei – was ist jetzt mit diesen Sätzen, die mich so angesprochen haben? Das ist ja schon mal die Crux mit den Vorsätzen: man fasst sie ziemlich hochgemut und hat guten Willen, dann kommt das Alltagschaos oder das tägliche Einerlei und plötzlich ist schon eine ziemliche Zeit vorbei und ich habe nicht dran gedacht. Der Vorteil der Fastenzeit ist, dass es ein gut überschaubarer Zeitraum ist: 7 Wochen, geht doch eigentlich. Und manchmal hilft dann eine Zusage und Ermutigung. So wie sie in der heutigen Lesung steht aus dem ersten Buch der Könige. „Wir sind ja Dein Volk Herr, und dein Eigentum. Du hast uns unter allen Völkern als Dein Eigentum ausgewählt“ Geht noch mehr?Wir sind gemeint, wir sind Gottes Eigentum, von ihm ausgewählt. Da fällt mir vieles leichter: ich muss nicht alles leisten, ich muss nicht alles allein schaffen, ich kann jeden Tag neu anfangen. Es immer neu probieren.Und dann hilft mir zum Beispiel, wenn ich nicht denken muss: Das nicht, das nicht und das auch nicht. Sondern auf meinem Zettel lesen kann: Denk mal positiv. Also: Du darfst, Du kannst, Du hast die Möglichkeit, Du willst doch. Das geht leichter. Denk mal positiv.

Die Weltgemeinschaft erlaubt Kriege zur Verteidigung oder präventiv, wenn ein Angriff zu befürchten ist oder man versuchen will, Staaten an der Nutzung der Atombombe zu hindern. Aber hier geht es schon wieder und wieder um Terrorstaaten, die ihren Einfluss und ihre Macht gefährdet sehen und wie wild um sich schlagen. Dass bisherige demokratische Staaten ebenso handeln und weder Kongress noch andere Gremien einbeziehen, macht diffuse Angst. Wenn jeder jeden aus irgendeinem Grund angreifen und Regierungschefs töten kann, was hält dann die Welt im Gleichgewicht?Mir geht es wie Dir und vielen von uns, die ratlos und hilflos die Nachrichten lesen und Brennpunkte schauen und keine Idee haben, was wir tun können. Milstein nimmt den Leser mit auf eine Reise durch Sophies Leben und hinterfragt, inwiefern ihr Werdegang auch heutigen Jugendlichen Orientierung und Sinn stiften kann. Die Erzählung beginnt mit einem Einblick in Sophies aufregende Kindheit, in der sie in einem von kritischen Gedanken und Kunst geprägten Umfeld aufwächst. Ihre Familie hat eine Vorliebe für 'entartete Literatur', was sich als bedeutend für ihre spätere Entwicklung herausstellt. Sophie und ihre Geschwister wuchsen in einem Haus auf, das Werte wie Toleranz, Gerechtigkeit und Empathie verleugnete und beeinflusste sie nachhaltig. Elias alguna vez había observado una en un museo, pero ahora estaba allí junto a una de ellas. Elias no compró la cámara en una tienda de antigüedades, ni la heredó de un abuelo olvidado. La cámara simplemente apareció en su estudio una mañana de martes, montada sobre su trípode de madera negra, oliendo a ozono y polvo antiguo.No tenía marca, ni número de serie. Su lente era un ojo de cristal demasiado profundo, casi líquido, que parecía palpitar si lo mirabas fijamente y que parecía no tener fondo.La curiosidad de Elías, fotógrafo de profesión, pudo más que su prudencia. Decidió probarla en el parque frente a su casa. Quería capturar el viejo roble centenario que dominaba la plaza, ese árbol bajo el cual generaciones enteras se habían besado o resguardado de la lluvia.Era un día radiante. Los niños jugaban y las palomas revoloteaban alrededor del árbol. Elías niveló las patas de madera en la acera. Sintió un frío extraño en las manos al tocar los controles de latón.Entonces, sucedió lo que nunca se habría podido describirBajo la tela negra, el mundo se veía invertido, como en cualquier cámara de gran formato, pero había algo más. No sabía porque pero el comentario de su  abuela no abandonaba su mente. Cerrando los ojos hizo un gran esfuerzo y apretó conscientemente el disparador. No hubo un "clic". Hubo un sonido similar al de una sábana rasgándose violentamente, un grito de la física quebrándose.Fue instantáneo y aterrador. Elías vio a través de la lente cómo el roble, los bancos, los niños, las palomas y la luz misma se estiraban como chicle, succionados por un vórtice invisible que convergía en el diafragma de la cámara. En decimas de segundos que se movían muy lentamente Elias pudo ver como toda la realidad que existía en aquella lente se discipaba y se abalanzaba hacia el .  No fue una explosión, fue una implosión de realidad. La materia se convirtió en líneas, luego en puntos, y finalmente desapareció dentro de la caja oscura.Elías levantó la cabeza, pálido, y se quitó la manga negra. Miró hacia el parque.Donde antes estaba el roble y la vida, ahora no había nada.  Y no me era que hubiera un espacio vacío lleno de aire. No. Había una ausencia absoluta de materia,  la realidad había dejado de ser dando paso a una "no-existencia" con bordes dentados. La luz del sol no atravesaba ese lugar; se detenía en seco en sus bordes y comenzaba a saltar hacia el otro bord

The record for the longest space-flight is held by physician-cosmonaut Valeri Polyakov. Back in 1994-95, he spent 437 days on the Mir space station and grew 4 centimetres in height through elongation of his spine in micro-gravity. Polyakov had an uncomfortable ride back to Earth in the very precisely customised descent module. Microgravity also causes demineralization of weight-bearing bones that is faster than age-related decline. But the cosmonaut had worked out religiously for the entire mission and after his capsule parachuted to the ground he made a point of walking from it relatively unassisted. One of the main objectives of the marathon flight had been to prove that walking proudly onto the Martian surface after a 9-month journey might be possible, given it only has 37 percent the gravitational force that Earth does. Microgravity additionally results in adaptive plasticity of the vestibular and sensorimotor networks and deconditioning of the cardiovascular system. Indeed, several years ago there was a medical emergency aboard the international space station when an ultrasound investigation revealed thrombosis of the internal jugular vein in one astronaut. In this podcast we discuss how management of cases like this has many parallels with remote medicine on earth. This show has been flagged as Clean by the host. This brings us to a look at some of Arthur C. Clarke's other stories, A Time Odyssey (1951), Tales From the White Hart (1957), The Nine Billion Names of God (1954), The Star (1955), Dolphin Island (1964), and A Meeting With Medusa (1971. These stories will wrap up our look at Clarke's Science Fiction and we have seen a lot of good stuff here. And as a final note, we cover CLarke's Three Laws. Arthur C. Clarke: Other Works, A Time Odyssey A collaboration between two of science fiction's best authors: what could possibly go wrong? Well, something went wrong. This series is not bad, but I hesitate to describe it as good. This series was described by Clarke as neither a prequel nor a sequel, but an “orthoquel”, a name coined from “orthogonal”, which means something roughly like “at right angles”, though it is also used in statistics to denote events that are independent and do not influence each other. And in relativity theory Time is orthogonal to Space. And in multi-dimensional geometry we can talk about axes in each dimension as orthogonal to all of the others. It is something I can't picture, being pretty much limited to three dimensions, but it can be described mathematically. It is sort of like the 2001 series, but not really. It has globes instead of monoliths. And the spheres have a circumference and volume that is related to their radius not by the usual pi, but by exactly three. Just what this means I am not sure, other than they are not sphere's in any usual sense of the word. In this story these spheres seem to be gathering people from various eras and bringing them to some other planet which gets christened “Mir”, though not in any way to the Russian Space Station. It is a Russian word that can mean “peace”, “world”, or “village”. I have seen it used a lot to refer to a village in my studies of Russian history. Anyway, the inhabitants include two hominids, a mother and daughter, a group of British Redcoats, Mongols from the Genghis Khan era, a UN Peacekeeper helicopter, a Russian space capsule, an unknown Rudyard Kipling, the army of Alexander The Great… Well at least they have lots of characters to throw around. They end up taking sides and fighting each other. In the end several of the people are returned to Earth in their own time. But the joke is on them. The beings behind the spheres are call themselves The Firstborn because they were the first to achieve sentience. They figure that best way for them to remain safe is to wipe out any other race that achieves sentience, making them to polar opposite of the beings behind the monoliths in 2001, for whom the mind is sacred. Anyway, the Firstborn have arranged for a massive solar flare that will wipe out all life on Earth and completely sterilize the planet, but conveniently it will happen in 5 years, leaving time for plot development. Of course the people of Earth will try to protect themselves. Then in the third book of the series an ominous object enters the solar system. This is of course a callback to the Rama object. It is like they wanted to take everything from the Rama series and twist it. While I love a lot of Clarke's work and some of Baxter's as well, I think this is eminently skippable. The two of them also collaborated on the final White Hart story, which isn't bad Other Works Tales from the White Hart This collection of short stories has a unity of the setting, a pub called White Hart, where a character tells outrageous stories. Other characters are thinly disguised science fiction authors, including Clarke himself. Clarke mentions that he was inspired to do this by the Jorkens stories of Lord Dunsany, which are also outrageous tall tales, but lacking the science fictions aspects of Clarke's stories. Of course this type of story has a long history, in which we would do well to mention the stories of Baron Munchausen, and of course the stories of L. Sprague de Camp and Fletcher Pratt as found in Tales from Gavagan's Bar. And Spider Robinson would take this basic idea and turn it into a series of books about Callahan's Place. Stories of this type are at least as much Fantasy as anything, but quite enjoyable, and I think I can recommend all of these as worth the time to while away a cold winter's evening while sitting by a warm fire with a beverage of choice. The Nine Billion Names of God This short story won a retrospective Hugo in 2004 as being the best short story of 1954. The idea is that a group of Tibetan monks believe that the purpose of the universe is to identify the nine billion names of God, and once that has been done the universe will no longer have a purpose and will cease to exist. They have been identifying candidates and writing them down, but the work is very slow, so they decide that maybe with a little automation they can speed it up. So they get a computer (and in 1954, you should be picturing a room-sized mainframe), and then hire some Western programmers to develop the program to do this. The programmers don't believe the monks are on to anything here, but a paycheck is a paycheck. They finish the program and start it running, but decide they don't want to be there when the monks discover their theory doesn't work, so they take off early without telling anyone, and head down the mountain. But on the way, they see the stars go out, one by one. The Star This classic short story won the Hugo for Best Short Story in 1956. The story opens with the return of an interstellar expedition that has been studying a system where the star went nova millennia ago. But the expedition's astrophysicist, a Jesuit Priest, seems to be in a crisis of faith. And if you think it implausible that a Jesuit Priest could also be an astrophysicist, I would suggest you look into the case of the Belgian priest Georges Lemaître, who first developed the theory of the Big Bang. Anyway, in the story, they learn that this system had a planet much like Earth, and it had intelligent beings much like Earth, who were peaceful, but in a tragic turn of events they knew that their star was going to explode, but they had no capability of interstellar travel. So they created a repository on the outermost planet of the system that would survive the explosion, and left records of their civilization. And when the Jesuit astrophysicist calculated the time of the explosion and the travel time for light, he is shaken: “[O]h God, there were so many stars you could have used. What was the need to give these people to the fire, that the symbol of their passing might shine above Bethlehem?” Dolphin Island This is a good Young Adult novel about the People of the Sea, who are dolphins. They save a young boy who had stowed away on a hovership that subsequently had crashed, and because no one knew about him he was left among the wreckage when the crew takes off in the life boats. And from here it is the typical Bildungsroman you find in most Young Adult novels. The dolphins bring him to an island, where he becomes involved with a research community led by a professor who is trying to communicate with dolphins. He learns various skills there, survives dangers, and in the end has to risk his life to save the people on the island. If you have a 13 year old in your house, this is worth looking for. A Meeting With Medusa This won the 1972 Nebula Award for Best Novella. It concerns one Howard Falcon, who early in the story has an accident involving a helium-filled airship, is badly injured, and requires time and prosthetics to heal. But then he promotes an expedition to Jupiter that uses similar technology, a Hot-Hydrogen balloon-supported aircraft. This is to explore the upper reaches of Jupiter's atmosphere, which is the only feasible way to explore given the intense gravity of this giant planet. Attempting to land on the solid surface would mean being crushed by the gravity and air pressure, so that is not possible. The expedition finds there is life in the upper clouds of Jupiter. Some of it is microscopic, like a kind of “air plankton” which is bio-luminescent. But there are large creatures as well, one of which is like jellyfish, but about a mile across. This is the Medusa of the title. Another is Manta-like creature, about 100 yards across, that preys on the Medusa. But when the Medusa starts to take an interest on Falcon's craft, he decides to get out quick for safety's sake. And we learn that because of the various prosthetics implanted after the airship accident Falcon is really a cyborg with much faster reactions than ordinary humans. As we have discussed previously, Clarke loved the sea, and in this novella he is using what he knows in that realm to imagine a plausible ecology in the atmosphere of Jupiter. Of course when he wrote this novella no one knew about the truly frightening level of radiation around Jupiter, but then a clever science fiction writer could come up with a way to work around that. Clarke's Three Laws Finally, no discussion of Arthur C. Clarke can omit his famous Three Laws. Asimov had his Three Laws of Robotics, and Clarke had his Three Laws of Technology. When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong. The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible. Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. This concludes our look at Arthur C. Clarke, the second of the Big Three of the Golden Age of Science Fiction. And that means we are ready to tackle the Dean of Science Fiction, Robert A. Heinlein. Retired agent William Peterson reviews two cases, his kidnapping investigation where two American businessmen in Kenya where held for ransom and his assistance in the capture and identification of terrorist Sajid Mir, a senior member of the Pakistan-based Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT). Mir is on the FBI Most Wanted list for his leading role in the planning, preparation, and execution of the November 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India. These were just two of the significant investigations Peterson worked during his FBI counterterrorism and international law enforcement career. He served in the FBI for 23 years.
