Gunfights and Myths: The Truth About Billy Brooks

Wild West Podcast

Send us a textThe frontier settlement of Dodge City earned its nickname "Bibulous Babylon" honestly in 1873. With no formal law enforcement and a population explosion of buffalo hunters and railroad workers, violence flourished—15 to 30 people died violently that first year alone. Boot Hill Cemetery filled quickly with those who "died with their boots on."Enter Billy Brooks, a man whose reputation preceded him. Already known as "Bully Brooks," he'd been a buffalo hunter, stagecoach driver renowned for delivering mail through flooded creeks, and briefly served as Newton's city marshal where he'd been shot three times yet still chased his attackers for miles. When concerned Dodge City businessmen needed someone to impose order without official backing, Brooks seemed the perfect solution—a man whose mere presence might deter troublemakers.Legend claims Brooks engaged in a staggering 15 gunfights during his brief tenure, reportedly killing seven or eight men. But when we examine the historical record closely, a different picture emerges. Most of these alleged confrontations lack names, dates, or any primary documentation. What we can verify are just two significant incidents: shooting railroad yardmaster Brownie through the head (who surprisingly survived) and more tellingly, backing down from Kirk Jordan in a public confrontation that shattered his fearsome image. After hiding under a bed until nightfall, Brooks left town, his effectiveness as a lawman permanently compromised. His life spiraled downward from there—returning to stagecoach driving before losing his job, then turning to horse theft, which led to his arrest and eventual lynching by vigilantes in 1874. Brooks' story perfectly encapsulates the contradictions of frontier justice: hired to impose order through intimidation, he ultimately fell victim to the same extra-legal violence he represented. What does our fascination with figures like Brooks reveal about our relationship with the American frontier? Why do we cling to the 15 gunfights legend despite limited evidence? Join us as we separate Wild West myth from documented reality, and consider what stories like his tell us about ourselves.Ready to explore more frontier tales? "Edward Masterson and the Texas Cowboys," penned by Michael King, takes readers on an exhilarating ride through the American West, focusing on the lively and gritty cattle town of Dodge City, Kansas. This thrilling dime novel plunges into the action-packed year of Ed Masterson's life as a lawman, set against the backdrop of the chaotic cattle trade, filled with fierce conflicts, shifting loyalties, and rampant lawlessness. Read transcriptGather ‘round, Dragon Ball devotees and gluttons for punishment! This week on Play Comics, we're subjecting ourselves to the digital equivalent of getting hit by Frieza's Death Beam repeatedly-Dragon Ball Z Taiketsu for the Game Boy Advance. Imagine taking the most explosive anime franchise in history and cramming it into a game with all the fiery intensity of a damp firecracker. Spoiler alert: This isn't a battle for glory-it's a battle for survival against one of the most bafflingly awful licensed games ever conceived. Joining me in this masochistic quest is Andrew Young from Behold!, who's agreed to lend his expertise (and his remaining sanity) to dissect this pixelated travesty. Together, we'll answer the burning question: How did a game about planet-destroying superhumans end up feeling as thrilling as watching paint dry on Master Roshi's houseboat? Hint: It involves more clipping issues than Yamcha's career and combat mechanics flatter than Krillin's scalp. From animations that resemble a PowerPoint presentation gone rogue to a soundtrack that sounds like a kazoo orchestra trapped in a washing machine, Taiketsu doesn't just drop the ball-it spikes it into the core of the Earth, unleashes a Spirit Bomb of disappointment, and then forgets to animate the explosion. Whether you're here for the schadenfreude or just morbid curiosity, grab your Dragon Radar and a stiff drink. This episode's gonna hurt. A lot. Learn such things as: What happens when the developers are put not only behind the 8 ball, but also in front of a really high cliff on a windy day and that cliff is made of ice? So I guess games really do need a story don't they? Even if it's just a hand wave at one. Is this the new worst representation of the comic source material? And so much more! You can find Andrew by looking at the Behold! account on Twitter or of course the Behold! website. You should especially check out the episode looking at X-Men 97 because I love that series and need something good in my life, and the episode looking at Fan4stick because it has me in it. AFGHANISTAN PROVIDES KABUL A DEFENSE IN DEPTH FOR THE GUNFIGHT:  4/8:  Kabul: The Untold Story of Biden's Fiasco and the American Warriors Who Fought to the End Hardcover – by  Jerry Dunleavy  (Author), James Hasson  (Author) 1878 SHERGAI HEIGHT https://www.amazon.com/Kabul-Untold-Bidens-American-Warriors/dp/1546005307/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1701296521&sr=1-1 America's chaotic retreat from Afghanistan in 2021 was nothing short of a horror show. Women and children were trampled to death outside the gates of the Kabul airfield. Desperate Afghans fell from the landing gear of departing planes. Taliban fighters mercilessly whipped and humiliated U.S. civilians trying to access the few square miles still controlled by American forces. Countless Afghan interpreters were abandoned to the mercy of the Taliban after risking their lives alongside American troops for years. And thirteen U.S. service members—eleven of whom were still in preschool on 9/11—were murdered in an ISIS suicide bombing that could easily have been prevented. Still, the full story is worse than anyone imagined. Drawing from hundreds of hours of first-person interviews, investigative reporter Jerry Dunleavy and former Army Captain and Afghanistan veteran James Hasson provide an exclusive, no-holds-barred account of the disastrous events of August 2021. Kabul is packed with shocking and infuriating exclusive details about fatal politics and bureaucracy that contributed to the catastrophe. The authors also tell, for the first time, inspiring stories of the bravery and sacrifices exhibited by countless Americans on the ground. Kabul's original reporting includes eyewitness accounts from servicemembers of all ranks who participated the rescue effort, inside information from senior intelligence officials, interviews with high-ranking members of allied governments, harrowing stories from Americans and Afghan allies willfully abandoned by craven officials in Washington, and exclusive details about veteran-led rescue missions that continue to this day. Chapter after chapter, Kabul depicts American government at its worst and “ordinary” Americans at their best.

Prepare your beam sabers and polish your Zaku helmets-this episode of Play Comics is about to launch straight into the Universal Century! We're diving headfirst into the PS2 classic Mobile Suit Gundam: Federation vs Zeon, where the only thing more intense than the space battles is trying to pronounce “RX-78-2” three times fast. Joining the fray is none other than Derek Van Dyke from Super Deluxe GamesCast and Castle Bravo, who's here to help us decide once and for all: Is it better to fight for the Federation, or is life just more fun in a mono-eyed mobile suit? Expect hot takes, cooler mobile suits, and at least one attempt to dodge a colony drop with nothing but sheer podcasting bravado. So grab your joystick, pick a side, and get ready for a barrage of wit, wisdom, and way too many references to Newtypes. The One Year War has never sounded this entertaining. Learn such things as: How real is the science of Gundam? Do you really have to play as one of the characters to have a game that feels right? If I thought of a story arc that already existed, does that make me a genius or just guilty of pre-plagarism? And so much more! Read transcriptGet ready to tattoo the number XIII on your memory banks (preferably not on your collarbone) as Play Comics dives into the cel-shaded, amnesia-riddled world of XIII – the video game adaptation that brought Jean Van Hamme's acclaimed French graphic novel series to life on PS2, Xbox, and GameCube. This first-person shooter might be the only game where waking up on a beach with complete memory loss is just the beginning of your problems, not the end result of a gaming convention afterparty. This week, we're joined by the phenomenally talented Rob Duenas from the Sketchcraft YouTube channel, whose artistic prowess has graced everything from the hellish battlegrounds of “Spawn Kills Every Spawn” to beloved video game franchises like Crash Bandicoot and Overwatch. When Rob isn't busy making comic pages look absolutely stunning or designing characters for your favorite games, he's dropping knowledge bombs about art and creativity on his channel that would make even the most amnesia-addled protagonist remember how to hold a pencil. Together, we'll untangle the conspiracy-laden plot that had gamers frantically searching for their own identity while taking down government agents with stylized comic book “BANG!” and “BOOM!” sound effects popping up on screen. Was this 2003 cel-shaded shooter as revolutionary as its artistic style suggested, or did it wash up on gaming shores only to be quickly forgotten? Does the console version you played actually matter, or were the loading time differences just another conspiracy to keep Xbox owners feeling superior? And most importantly, how does a game based on a graphic novel series about a character who can't remember who he is manage to create such memorable gameplay? Grab your favorite tattered map with cryptic clues, practice your best “I have no idea who I am but I can somehow expertly use military weapons” face, and join us for an episode more twisty-turny than XIII's plot itself! Learn such things as: Does it matter if nobody knows that the comic source material exists? Does it matter if the art style is totally changed up from how the comic looks? Can a game be released on too many consoles? Will Chris Baker come in and answer my question? And so much more! You can find Rob on on YouTube @Sketchcraft or his website Sketchcraft which has links to whatever social media places are still alive this week. Send us a textThe crack of gunfire shatters the morning air over Dodge City's dusty plaza. A black derby hat bobs above a railroad embankment as bullets fly from every direction. It's April 16, 1881, and Bat Masterson has just stepped off the train and into one of the American frontier's most chaotic yet consequential gunfights.Masterson had returned to help his brother, Jim, recently fired as city marshal and locked in a business dispute over the Lady Gay Dance Hall. What begins as a personal matter quickly escalates into a symbolic last stand of Dodge City's wild era. When Masterson encounters his brother's rivals AJ Peacock and Al Updegraff near the train depot, tensions explode into gunplay that engulfs the entire town.Through vivid storytelling, we transport you to Front Street as frightened onlookers peer through broken windows, watching the legendary gunfighter exchange shots with his adversaries while bullets kick up dust around his famous derby hat. The shootout's aftermath proves even more fascinating—Mayor Webster arrives with a shotgun to arrest Masterson, marking a decisive shift in Dodge City's history. Though Updegraff survives his wounds and Bat pays only an $8 fine, the Masterson brothers are effectively banished from town as new civic leaders implement moral ordinances to tame the notorious frontier outpost. This forgotten gunfight represents something far greater than a personal dispute—it captures the precise moment when Dodge City chose civilization over chaos, commerce over gunplay, and law over legend. Join us as we resurrect this pivotal moment that forever changed the trajectory of one of America's most infamous frontier towns.Purchase the Dime Novel "Gunfight at the Plaza" Want more Wild West stories? Jay is still enjoying westerns with a variety of tellings of the same, classic story. Tombstone (1993) and Gunfight at the OK Corral (1957). Send us a textWelcome back to the conclusion of my interview with retired Las Vegas Metro Lieutenant Randy Sutton. Most cops, including myself, have a recurring nightmare of being in a gunfight and their firearm malfunctioning or their rounds hitting the bad guy with no effect. My guest on today's show lived that nightmare, going toe to toe with a gunman less than a few feet away from him, with his pistol malfunctioning, and once he cleared his weapon, the rounds hitting, but having no effect. All the while the bad guy was firing his gun at him so closely he could see the fire coming out the barrel. Lt. Sutton joined the Princeton Police Department at 19 years of age, becoming one of the youngest Police Officers in the state. He served the town for ten years before joining the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, where he served for almost 24 years, retiring at the rank of lieutenant. During his service, he distinguished himself as one of the highest decorated officers in department history, having earned multiple Lifesaving awards, Exemplary Service awards, Community service,e and a Medal for Valor. The good lieutenant is also a public speaker, prolific author, podcaster, and the founder of Wounded Blue whose mission is to improve the lives of injured and disabled law enforcement officers by providing support, education, assistance and legislative advocacy to our true American heroes. Please enjoy this often raw and very real conversation with Lieutenant Randy Sutton. In today's episode we discuss:.·      Saving a baby who was shot in a drive-by shooting during a gang initiation.·      Randy's career progression in the Vegas Metro PD. ·      Randy's opinion of the Vegas Metro PD now compared to back when he was on the job.·      The biggest changes in the department in the last twenty years.·      How many times was he told by tourists that prostitution is legal in Vegas?·      What if anything is being done about prostitution in Las Vegas?·      How is order kept in a town that is flooded with drunk/high tourists who are vulnerable to criminality?·      How Randy dealt with an unexpected end to his law enforcement career.·      What is The Wounded Blue? Subscriber-only episodeSend us a textThe dusty streets of Tombstone, Arizona became the stage for one of the Wild West's most dramatic confrontations when two seasoned gamblers faced off outside the Oriental Saloon on February 25, 1881. What began as heated words escalated into a deadly showdown that would forever link the names of Luke Short and Charlie Storms in frontier history.Against the opulent backdrop of the Oriental Saloon—Tombstone's premier gambling establishment with its 28 chandeliers and Brussels carpets—tensions had been brewing for days. Legendary lawman Bat Masterson had recently arrived in town at the request of his friend Wyatt Earp to help protect their gambling interests from rival factions. Little did he know he would soon witness a deadly encounter between two men he knew well.Charlie Storms was already infamous throughout the West—a skilled gambler with a volatile temperament who boasted loudly about his fighting prowess. Luke Short, though younger at just 27, had quickly established himself in Tombstone's gambling scene as someone not to be trifled with. When Storms took offense at being called an "old, gray-bearded son of a bitch," what might have remained a verbal spat spiraled toward its inevitable violent conclusion. The confrontation culminated in a lightning-fast exchange of gunfire on Tombstone's main street. Short proved the quicker draw, placing a fatal bullet through Storms' heart. In the frontier justice system of the day, the local judge quickly ruled the killing self-defense, finding no grounds for murder charges against Short. Meanwhile, Storms was laid to rest in Boot Hill Cemetery, leaving behind two widows in different states—a testament to the complex lives these frontier gamblers led. This fascinating episode transports you back to the authentic Wild West, where personal honor, quick reflexes, and skill with firearms often determined who lived to see another sunset. Through meticulous historical research, you'll experience the sights, sounds, and tensions of a frontier town where fortune-hunters, lawmen, and outlaws crossed paths daily, and where a heated word could transform a friendly card game into a date with Boot Hill.

Our guest, Francine Powers, is an award-winning journalist, Cochise County Historical Society member, and editor-in-chief of the former magazine “Spirits of Cochise County.” She's authored “Mi Reina: Don't Be Afraid,” “Haunted Bisbee,” and most recently, “Haunted Cochise County.” Discover the layers of history, mystery, and spectral intrigue that make Southeastern Arizona one of the most paranormally active regions in the country.
