Kathleen O’Toole, associate vice president for K-12 Education at Hillsdale College, is joined by Christopher Nadon to discuss a recent essay he wrote on how educators are failing their students by embracing the importance of “lived experience.” Christopher Nadon (B.A., M.A., Ph.D., University of Chicago) has taught political philosophy and humanities at Emet Classical Academy, Claremont McKenna College, Trinity College, and Kyev-Mohyla Academy. He writes on the character and history of republican government understood as self-rule in authors such as Herodotus, Xenophon, Aristotle, Machiavelli, Sarpi, Hobbes, Locke, Tocqueville, and Lincoln. Send me a messageLawrence of Arabia: The Truth Behind The LegendChris Green is The History Chap; telling stories that brings the past to life.Ways You Can Support My Channel:Become A PatronMake A DonationWho was Lawrence of Arabia? The 1962 David Lean film, starring Peter O'Toole and Omar Sharif, introduced millions to the legend of T.E. Lawrence - the British officer who led the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire in World War One. But how much of that legend is true? This episode tells the real story of Thomas Edward Lawrence (T.E. Lawrence)1888: Born in Wales, the illegitimate son of an Irish nobleman and his governess.1907-1910: Studied History at Oxford, graduating with a first-class honours degree. His thesis on Crusader castles took him on a 1,000-mile walking tour of Syria.1911-1914: Worked as an archaeologist in Syria, becoming fluent in Arabic. Conducted secret military surveys of the Sinai Peninsula.1914-1916: Joined British Military Intelligence in Cairo, producing maps and reports on Ottoman forces.1916-1918: Liaison officer with Prince Faisal's Arab Northern Army during the Arab Revolt. Participated in guerrilla raids on the Hejaz Railway and the capture of Aqaba.1918: Entered Damascus with Faisal's army as the Ottoman Empire collapsed.1919: Accompanied Faisal to the Paris Peace Conference, where the Sykes-Picot Agreement shattered Arab dreams of independence.1921:Served as special advisor to Winston Churchill at the Cairo Conference, helping install Faisal as King of Iraq.1922-1935: Disillusioned, Lawrence enlisted in the RAF and Royal Tank Corps under aliases (John Ross, T.E. Shaw), seeking anonymity.1935: Died aged 46 in a motorcycle accident near his cottage in Dorset. The truth behind Lawrence of Arabia is more complex - and more fascinating - than the Hollywood legend. He was one of many British officers supporting the revolt, part of a much bigger story about WW1 in the Middle East, broken promises, and decisions that shaped the region for the next century.Support the show

A recent executive order entitled “Fighting Overcriminalization in Federal Regulations” and two congressional proposals: the Count the Crimes to Cut Act and the Mens Rea Reform Act (also known as the default-mens-rea proposal), all have highlighted long-standing discussions on federal overcriminalization. These initiatives were spotlighted during the May 7, 2025 hearing of the House Judiciary Committee. Join us for a panel discussion that will consider whether these reforms can meaningfully address the problem of a sprawling federal criminal code—one that may, in some areas, lack clarity and undermine individual liberty by exposing the public to ill-defined or overly broad criminal liability.Featuring: John G. From the mist of Lake Titicaca, eight children of Inti and Mama Quilla stepped onto the high plains, their feet brushing the grass and waking the land itself. As their journey continued, the mountains claimed some of them, caves swallowed others, until only one final pair held the golden rods. By then, they had taught the first clans who had accompanied them to weave, shape clay, carve terraces into the mountainside and coax life from reed and soil. These clans were the Ayar: Children of the Sun by Fabio Lopiano and Mandela Fernandez-Grandon from Osprey Games with art by Ian O'Toole.Read the full review here: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2025/11/22/ayar-children-of-the-sun-saturday-review/Useful LinksAyar: Children of the Sun: https://www.ospreypublishing.com/uk/ayar-children-of-the-sun-9781472860071/Rulebook: https://www.ospreypublishing.com/media/fcyh2h5j/ayar-rulebook.pdfOsprey Games: https://www.ospreypublishing.com/uk/BGG listing: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/429438/ayar-children-of-the-sunUK Games Expo 2025 review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2025/06/07/uk-games-expo-2025-saturday-review/The Druids of Edora review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2025/11/15/the-druids-of-edora-saturday-review/MusicIntro Music: Bomber (Sting) by Riot (https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/)Music: Beauty Of The Earth 3 - Grasslands, produced by Sascha EndeLink: https://ende.app/en/song/12842-beauty-of-the-earth-3-grasslandsMusic: Binaural Sleep Vol. 5, produced by Sascha EndeLink: https://ende.app/en/song/13200-binaural-sleep-vol-5SupportIf you want to support this podcast financially, please check out the links below:Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/TabletopGamesBlogPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/tabletopgamesblogWebsite: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/support/

Episode 402 is Smallville (2001) "Pilot" Baby Kal-El lands on earth and is found by the Kents. Kal-El is named Clark by Jonathan and Martha and tries to live a normal teenage life. This is somewhat of a challenge given his developing abilities. He becomes fast friends with Lex Luthor after saving Lex's life. Same plot used as the aired pilot except for some extension to certain scenes and Cynthia Ettinger portraying the role of Martha Kent before Annette O' Toole takes her place for the rest of the series.
What if Prince Arthur, Henry VIII's elder brother, had survived? In this special interview, I sit down with novelist Leah Toole to talk about her fascinating book "The Rose and The Pomegranate" — an alternative history novel that asks one of Tudor history's biggest “what ifs.” In Leah's world, Arthur Tudor doesn't die in 1502 — and the ripple effects are enormous. Katherine of Aragon's destiny changes, Henry VIII's life takes a very different course, and familiar figures like the Boleyns, Wolsey, and Cromwell walk entirely new paths. In this conversation we explore: - Why Arthur Tudor and this “what if”? - How Leah balanced historical accuracy with imagination. - Arthur and Katherine's marriage — and how it might have unfolded. - A reimagined Henry VIII without the six wives we know so well. - Which events Leah chose to keep… and which to reshape. - How a single turning point could have reshaped England, Europe, and the Church. It's a thoughtful, imaginative, and meticulously researched take on Tudor history that fans won't want to miss! "The Rose and The Pomegranate" is available now: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rose-Pomegranate-Leah-Toole/dp/173857783X/ https://www.amazon.com/Rose-Pomegranate-Leah-Toole/dp/173857783X/ What Tudor “what if” would YOU most like to see explored? Send us a textLong before superhero shows dominated television on the CW, Smallville pioneered the genre with its fresh take on Superman's origin story. The show's ambitious approach - following Clark Kent through his formative years before donning the iconic cape and costume - created a blueprint that countless superhero series would later follow.Diving into Season One feels like opening a time capsule from 2001. The soundtrack filled with Lifehouse, Papa Roach, and Sum 41 instantly transports you back to a simpler era of television storytelling. What makes this first season fascinating is watching the creators experiment with format and tone - establishing the "freak of the week" structure while gradually building deeper character arcs that would eventually span the show's impressive ten-season run.Michael Rosenbaum's portrayal of Lex Luthor stands as one of the show's greatest achievements. His nuanced performance creates a character both sympathetic and dangerous, establishing a complex friendship with Clark that viewers know is destined for tragedy. Equally impressive is the Kent family dynamic, with John Schneider and Annette O'Toole delivering what many consider the definitive portrayal of Superman's adoptive parents. Their unwavering moral guidance provides the emotional foundation that shapes Clark's journey toward becoming a hero. The early meteor rock mythology (they don't even call it kryptonite yet!) creates both a narrative engine for weekly adventures and a compelling metaphor for teenage transformation. Each "meteor freak" represents different aspects of adolescent anxiety - fears about appearance, acceptance, and identity that resonate beyond the superhero trappings. These episodes may seem formulaic now, but they established crucial building blocks for the epic story that would unfold over the next decade.Have you revisited Smallville recently? We'd love to hear how it holds up for you after all these years.
