Episode 402 is Smallville (2001) "Pilot" Baby Kal-El lands on earth and is found by the Kents. Kal-El is named Clark by Jonathan and Martha and tries to live a normal teenage life. This is somewhat of a challenge given his developing abilities. He becomes fast friends with Lex Luthor after saving Lex's life. What if Prince Arthur, Henry VIII's elder brother, had survived? In this special interview, I sit down with novelist Leah Toole to talk about her fascinating book "The Rose and The Pomegranate" — an alternative history novel that asks one of Tudor history's biggest “what ifs.” In Leah's world, Arthur Tudor doesn't die in 1502 — and the ripple effects are enormous. Katherine of Aragon's destiny changes, Henry VIII's life takes a very different course, and familiar figures like the Boleyns, Wolsey, and Cromwell walk entirely new paths. In this conversation we explore: - Why Arthur Tudor and this “what if”? - How Leah balanced historical accuracy with imagination. - Arthur and Katherine's marriage — and how it might have unfolded. - A reimagined Henry VIII without the six wives we know so well. - Which events Leah chose to keep… and which to reshape. - How a single turning point could have reshaped England, Europe, and the Church. It's a thoughtful, imaginative, and meticulously researched take on Tudor history that fans won't want to miss! Send us a textLong before superhero shows dominated television on the CW, Smallville pioneered the genre with its fresh take on Superman's origin story. The show's ambitious approach - following Clark Kent through his formative years before donning the iconic cape and costume - created a blueprint that countless superhero series would later follow.Diving into Season One feels like opening a time capsule from 2001. The soundtrack filled with Lifehouse, Papa Roach, and Sum 41 instantly transports you back to a simpler era of television storytelling. What makes this first season fascinating is watching the creators experiment with format and tone - establishing the "freak of the week" structure while gradually building deeper character arcs that would eventually span the show's impressive ten-season run.Michael Rosenbaum's portrayal of Lex Luthor stands as one of the show's greatest achievements. His nuanced performance creates a character both sympathetic and dangerous, establishing a complex friendship with Clark that viewers know is destined for tragedy. Equally impressive is the Kent family dynamic, with John Schneider and Annette O'Toole delivering what many consider the definitive portrayal of Superman's adoptive parents. Their unwavering moral guidance provides the emotional foundation that shapes Clark's journey toward becoming a hero. The early meteor rock mythology (they don't even call it kryptonite yet!) creates both a narrative engine for weekly adventures and a compelling metaphor for teenage transformation. Each "meteor freak" represents different aspects of adolescent anxiety - fears about appearance, acceptance, and identity that resonate beyond the superhero trappings. These episodes may seem formulaic now, but they established crucial building blocks for the epic story that would unfold over the next decade.Have you revisited Smallville recently? We'd love to hear how it holds up for you after all these years. Even in a highly uncertain business environment, companies that build new businesses and develop new offerings, processes, and business models are better able to capture growth opportunities and hedge against disruption. Our recent survey of more than 1,000 companies around the world reflected this, with the largest share of respondents identifying the ability to innovate as their most important strategic factor for generating growth over the coming 12 months. Maggie O'Toole's remarkable journey from arriving in Chicago from Poland with just $300 to becoming Chief Client Officer at Dash Solutions exemplifies the power of mindset and determination in creating extraordinary outcomes. Her story serves as both inspiration and blueprint for anyone looking to make their mark in the payments industry. With disarming candor, Maggie shares the formative experiences that shaped her leadership philosophy – from bartending jobs in her early days to orchestrating client success strategies at a Fortune-recognized innovative company. She reveals how focusing on possibilities rather than limitations became her superpower, allowing her to navigate unfamiliar terrain without a support system and ultimately thrive professionally. At the heart of Maggie's leadership approach is a profound understanding that business success stems from human connection. "Businesses are people, and people want to do business with who they like and trust," she emphasizes, highlighting how Dash Solutions differentiates itself through exceptional service built on relationships. This philosophy drives her work transforming how companies handle payment operations across healthcare and other sectors traditionally slow to embrace digital innovation.Maggie offers a refreshingly nuanced perspective on modern leadership, advocating for situational approaches tailored to team members' growth journeys rather than one-size-fits-all management. She stresses the importance of psychological safety in fostering innovation, encouraging teams to "question everything" and imagine what might be possible if failure wasn't an option. For women navigating career advancement, her advice to "find your tribe" rather than just pursuing job titles resonates as both practical and profound.

Nestled deep in the Wicklow Mountains, Glenmalure was once a stronghold for rebels and a sanctuary from the outside world. But long after the echoes of rebellion faded, the valley remained a place apart, where the comforts of modern life arrived late. Glenmalure was only connected to the electricity grid and running water in the late 20th century, and the rhythms of daily existence were shaped by isolation, resilience, and community spirit. In this evocative episode, which concludes a series on the Wicklow Military Road, historian Fin Dwyer shares the stories of people who lived in this isolated and remote valley.Recorded in a 200-year-old inn, this episode weaves together personal recollections, local history, and the enduring landscape of Glenmalure. It is a tribute to a way of life that has only recently disappeared! The episode features the voices of Carmel O'Toole, Michael Fewer, Marion McEvoy, Hugh McLindon, and Pat Dunne. This episode would not have been possible by the hours of recordings with the Glenamalure Pure Mile Group. Thanks to the Glenmalure Lodge for faciliating this episode.A special thanks to Deirdre Burns, the Heritage Officer of Wicklow County Council. This episode was funded by Wicklow County Council and the Heritage Council.Sound by Kate Dunlea.200 Anniversary Events to mark the death of Michael Dwyer This year marks the 200th anniversary of the death of Michael Dwyer, the rebel who played a pivotal role in the history of the Wicklow Military Road.
